X only startable as root afer pacman -Suy

Hello everybody,
since i've done a system upgrade with pacman -Suy some hours ago i am no more able to start x neither with startx nor gdm as a non root user.
root can do startx and will see the GUI as expected. I think it's a permissions problem, but i really don't know with what. On a topic a few lines under mine there was the problem of the X binary with wrong permissions. That's not my problem, the X binaries (or the Xorg binaries and the X links) permissions are correct.
What makes the whole thing really tricky is that the Xorg logfiles do not say anything about what is not going right. In my desperation i also tried strace to see what goes wrong with no luck.
I am using the 64 bit version.
I would be glad if anybody is able to help me out of the situation i am now forced to: using windows.

Maybe uninstalling and reinstalling helps:
Uninstall:
pacman -Rs xorg
and
pacman -Sy xorg
to reinstall

  • Pacman -Syu and now keyboard only works as root kde

    I did a pacman -Syu and now keyboard only works as root kde
    Users can use keyboard in the basic console and this is a failure within KDE or the X-server.
    On this upgrade I needed to add the portmap daemon to rc.conf.
    I am running kerrnel 2.6.5-2. The upgrade lifted KDE to KDE 3.2.2. Xfree86 was upgraded previously and did not present this problem so the KDE upgrade is under suspicion.
    My rc.conf daemons list is DAEMONS=(portmap syslogd klogd !pcmcia network netfs crond fam cups kdm)
    Is there something extra I need to add?

    Hi colnago,
    I tidied up my daemons, after considering how you've set yours. I agree portmap and fam are not useful. I now understand that the upgrade was leaning on fam so that it noticed portmap was missing... a red herring issue, perhaps?
    I had no means of getting a dmesg log readout, because of the keyboard crashing. So I have patiently reinstalled kde 3.2.1, by way of adding the components one by one from /var/cache/pacman/pkg/. That works, so I can now pause and investigate if there are any any known issues with the 3.2.2 upgrade that shed light.
    I did get an indicator that the DCOP server did not function properly. This happened as warnings and errors, when I installed an additional user.
    Thanks

  • Flashplayer only works as root

    Hello there. Since this is rather long time since this thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=51055 ([solved]Flash only works as root?) I made a new thread. I've installed firefox with pacman -S firefox. So did I installed flashplugin. The problem is that when I go to youtube.com or any other site that has flash clipcs and when I click play, firefox will just crash without warning. Here is the firefox output:

  • Flashplayer and Spellcheck only work as root.....

    I am VERY new to Arch....
    Recently just installed and things are going well....except for a few glitches....
    I installed Flashplayer and spellcheck (among other things) with pacman....
    Upon doing so I realized that flash etc. are ONLY available in "root"
    I try installing them in my user "donald" and no dice...It says its already installed...but I cant use it? (youtube...etc..)
    any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Donald

    sounds like the file permissions are wrong in the /feirfox/plugins folder
    if you made a firefox user/group change them to that
    or change them toy your normal user.
    most of these plugins need to be able to wright to the firefox folder .

  • [solved] Pacman -Suy killed libdbus?

    Hmm, did a pacman -Suy a few hours ago, oddly enough my dbus died, can't even find libdbus on my filesystem anymore. When I was upgrading I had a similar problem to this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57902 not sure on if the errors were the same, but it was similar. So I did a pacman -Suyf(as I have done many times before) to find out that it killed my libdbus. My theory is maybe the mirrors I am choosing arn't in sync with eachother. Guess I'll wait for a day or so and hope another pacman -Suy fixes it.

    Try installing dbus-core and dbus again.
    By the way, if you ever need to us -f, then you should just did it for the package that needs it.  Even then, you should avoid using -f at all...

  • [Solved] Volume Control only works on root (Xfce)

    I just installed Xfce and everything has been going great. The only problem I have run into so far is a permissions error with the volume control as well as a problem streaming music from Pandora using Pithos. When ever I try to use the Mixer applet on a normal user account I get this error:
    GStreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions problem.
    I also get this error (only on non-root accounts when trying to use Pithos to stream music from Pandora):
    GStreamer error: state change failed and some element failed to post a proper error message with the reason for the failure.
    I believe that both are permission errors, but how would I fix it?

  • Applications installed with pacman only start with root

    Hi,
    I used linuxdcpp a few times some weeks ago, but now when I try to run it in terminal nothing happens and...
    $ linuxdcpp

    as if it closed directly after it starts.
    $ linuxdcpp
    $ echo $?
    returns 0. Also, I can run it in root without any problem.
    Since the time when it worked fine, I moved my home folder into another partition but I don't think it can cause the problem.

  • How to install iPlanet 5.0 to only hold netscape root?

    hi:
    This is a simple question. According to page 17 of the Install Guide, it is
    recommended to run a separate instance of the Dir Server to host the
    suffix o=NetscapeRoot. And this should be the first instance to be
    installed, because the other instances would refer to it.
    I understand this conceptually, but when I run the install, there seems to
    be only 2 choices:
    a) store your data and netscape root
    b) store your data and use netscape root from somewhere else.
    i.e. there is no choice to just install netscape root.
    So is the intended process here to choose option a) with some dummy suffix,
    e.g. dc=dummy at a non-standard port, and then never use the dummy suffix?
    Appreciate if someone can clarify my confusion on this process.
    Thanks,
    steve

    in addition to o=netscaperoot. I would not worry to much about that:
    what if you need to create users with special rights which would allow
    them to access the configuration tree. I would rather not put those
    entries under the o=netscaperoot tree.
    On the other hand, you can delete the extra suffix after installation.

  • [SOLVED] Network manager only works as root

    Hello everyone,
    I am brand new to arch and have been quite impressed over the past few days over all it has to offer.  Everything has been running quite smoothly and I am now in the process of setting up wireless.  I installed network manager and was able to connect to a wireless network as root.  For my regular user, however, I am running into some issues.  First one was that the nm-applet could not be opened in fluxbox.  I received the following error:
    ** (nm-applet:1576): WARNING **: <WARN> request_name(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service.
    Error: (9) Connection ":1.27" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings" due to security policies in the configuration file
    I "fixed" this by adding the following to /etc/dbus-1/system.d/nm-applet.conf.  Original credit goes to the user in this thread (I only slightly modified his code): https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=63576
    <!-- hack -->
    <policy user="myusername">
    <allow own="org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings"/>
    <allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings"/>
    <allow send_interface="org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings"/>
    <deny send_interface="org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerSetting.Secrets"/>
    </policy>
    <!-- end of hack -->
    Now the applet shows up for my regular user, the problem being that it doesn't connect to the wireless networks (only wired).  Whenever I try to connect to wireless, nothing happens (the symbol doesn't change in any way, i.e. the green spheres should start circling); I am still able to succesfully connect to wireless using root.  Does anyone know what the source of this issue may be?  Thank you very much in advance.

    Solved: Had to install consolekit and add "ck-launch-session" to my .xinitrc file when starting fluxbox.
    Edit: Please note that this also allowed me to remove the previous change to nm-applet.conf (no longer necessary)!

  • [SOLVED] Trackpad only working as root

    I just installed arch on my late 2011 macbook pro. Almost everything worked fine out of the box but I have an issue with the trackpad, it does not work at all if I startx as a regular user. If I start X as root it seems to work fine.
    The only unusual message I see in X's error log is the following:
    xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)
    Please be patient with me as I don't have a mouse to edit the post properly or paste the full error log.
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    It looks like spoke too soon. The problem was related to the permissions for /dev/input/event11 it only has group permissions for group input. What was needed was to add my user to the "input" group.

    How are you launching the application as root? If you're using "sudo midori" or "su -c midori", then you've probably messed up the ownership of your config/cache files.
    ls -lR .midori
    (not sure if that's the correct directory for midori, may be ~/.local/share/midori, or ~/.config/midori).
    In short, check the ownership of midori-related files. Change back to $UID:$GID if they're owned by root.
