X-Serve refuses to boot from HDD

Hi!
Short version: We have an X-serve, a later Xeon but not the latest that for some reason refuses to boot from any internal HDD both original Apple branded 80GBs and newer ones that works fine in other X-Serves we have.
Full:
The X-Serve was delivered with 10.5 but in order to use the OD with some other servers  that runs on 10.6  I took out the org drive and put in a newer 750GB drive that we use in the other X-Serves and some MacPros with no problems.
This problematic X-Serve boots happily on the OS-X Server installer DVD. I format/partition the 750GB drive and installs 10.6 server on it. After installation and reboot it refuses to boot from the newly installed HDD.
I initially thought that the PRAM battery was out but If try  bless -- info  running on the installer DVD it correctly indentify the 750 drive and blessed system folder.  I can also set it and the machine sets and reads the bless info.  I can put in a cloned system drive (80GB original Apple HDD) from another identical X-Serve and it refuses to boot from it even if bless again reports a correct path and folder to the cloned 80GB drive.
I have also tried to install a 10.5 server system from the very DVD that the server was delivered with without luck.
Left to do is to install a new system on USB drive/stick or FW drive. But to be able to use the machine in production we cannot rely on external HDD of course.
So I'm open to suggestions and ideas – what can I do to get it up and running booting on HDD?
Could it still be a battery issue?

I would be trying to boot off an external FW or USB drive as you mentioned, as a troubleshooting measure. If you can, use an external drive enclosure and install one of the drives from an internal drive carrier into that enclosure. I have seen drive carriers go bad, or it could be something more serious like logic board issue.

  • Adobe on Leopard, refuses to boot from disc, disaster?

After buying Adobe CS3 Web Premium, I found out I couldn't install it because my drive was formatted as case-sensitive. So, I was forced to backup all my important data and re-initialize. I zeroed the drive, but told it to skip zeroing just before it was done with the last little sliver in the progress bar.
So, I get all the whole system updated. Install Aperture, Thunderbird, Firefox... everything is going great. Then get the updates for Aperture, everything works flawlessly. I had never seen it run so well. Then I finally install CS3 and the install process seems to go without a hitch.
So, I've got CS3 on there, but I want to do some stuff with Aperture before I get into it. I'm working with Aperture and everything is going great. Good performance, really speedy. Then, I decide to open Illustrator CS3. To my horror, Aperture starts to go completely wrong. It gets to the point where I can't use it for longer than 30 seconds without having it crash. So, I quit Illustrator and the problem persists. Finally, I decide to restart the machine, Aperture seems to have fixed itself with restart, everything seems to be alright, for now.
Hmm, I think, maybe the CS3 needs to be updated. Yes, it did, 524 MB of updates. The installer downloads it all, starts the updating process and hangs silently (liquid in the progress bar still flowing). I get no notification except in Activity Monitor, where launchd and another process (I forget which) are going crazy with the CPU. I force-quit the updater from Activity Monitor, reopen it, press the install button again. It doesn't do anything, so I found out I actually have to say "Delete All" as in, delete all the downloaded updates. Then the updater quits itself and I have to reopen it and redownload and install whatever the installer thinks didn't get updated. I had to force quit, delete all, redownload, and install about 5 times before it said it was through.
Oh man, that was bad. Now the whole machine is pretty much a sluggish mess. Naturally, I thought, "I'll run Disk Warrior." I had run it with an earlier version of Leopard before, so I expected it to work. Insert Disk Warrior, Restart, hold C key, disc spins for a second and ejects itself. System ignores my command and boots from hard drive.
But everything loads and things seem alright, so I think, "oh well, I guess everything is alright." I do some work in Illustrator, everything seems good. Listening to music, but not working in Aperture. The machine works great for about 2 days. Then, I decided I want to install Final Cut - I put in the Install DVD, it spins for a second and spins back down, nothing happens. No desktop icon, no optical drive showing up in Disk Utility, Eject button on keyboard doesn't work, iTunes - control > Eject Disc, now my iTunes is hung. I try to force quit, nothing happens. Force quit dialog, iTunes is listed as if it hasn't crashed, click force quit, it remains in the list. iTunes icon remains in the dock, arrow still below, but does nothing when I click it and won't poof. iTunes doesn't show up in Activity Monitor.
Okay, "definitely gonna try Disk Warrior again," I think to myself. Restart, reset PRAM twice, hold option to boot select screen, press eject to remove FCE disc, insert Disk Warrior, Disk Warrior icon shows up on screen, click it, click the arrow to boot to it. Wait a second - BSOD, no cursor! Disc spins for a while and stops. Press any key, it spins back up again and eventually dies down again, doing nothing. Forced shutdown holding power button, press power again, hold the C key to boot to disc. Disk Warrior spins up again and spits itself out, just as before. System boots to hard drive instead.
What am I doing wrong? The Mac Pros at school run Leopard and CS3 and they seem to be flawless. Am I the only one having these problems? I can't figure out if this is hardware or software. I'm currently creating an image of the Disk Warrior disc. I plan to restore it to my hard drive's second partition and see what happens. I'll let you know what happens. Until then, can anybody give me any hints on what might be wrong with my system or at least give me some sympathy? LOL. This is beyond frustrating.
I'd had my system ignore what seemed like successful insertion of optical discs and refuse to eject them before the fresh install, but I've never had it refuse to boot from a bootable disc like this. Any ideas?

Excuse me, it seems there is some data in the CrashReporter log for VersionCueCS3. I had forgotten to remove my search filter keyword.

  • IMac won't boot from HDD or CD.  Help!?

    Hi,
I recently came back from holiday for a couple of weeks and sat down to start my iMac (24" C2D). The machine just sat at a white screen and wouldn't go anywhere. Thought, ah, I'll just reset the PRAM (unplugged power cable for a min or so), and still same problem. Eventually I got the mac to boot by holding down the power button, the long beep sounded and the mac booted. All was well, until the next time I powered it down. Same thing, however same resolution didnt work...
After numerous attempts holding c, I've managed to boot into the mac installer, which said it couldnt repair the drive through disk utility. As I have time machine backup, thought I'll just start from scratch. Created a new partition (just to make sure everything was fresh), verified disk (no problems), started installer and it crashed towards the very end of the install (just over 1 hour in) with errors of being unable to copy files. After another few hours, managed to boot from CD again, this time install started, left it running overnight, only to find the mac in the morning on, but with a black screen. I've had to power it off and now I'm left with the same issue of a white screen and being unable to boot from CD.
Does any of this make sense to anyone? Could be a failed HDD, but why would I have the issue with the iMac generally refusing to boot from CD? Ran hardware diagnostic (extended) and no problems found.
I now have no hair left...

I assume that model has a back up battery in it? If so, have you changed it recently? If not you may want to replace it. In the meantime, try removing it completely and see if it starts up any better. If the battery is right on the hairy edge of good/too low, it might be corrupting the PRAM (or whatever they call it now on new models) causing start up issues. If you remove it, you won't retain a lot of settings such as Date and Time, but you should also be able to boot up eat time with all default values.
I had the same sort of issue with my eMac and pulling the battery cleared it up. That was many months ago and one of these days I might get around to buying a replacement battery... or not.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • Satellite NB10t-A-101 refuses to boot from any external medium

I have just purchased an NB10t in the UK, and am trying to boot to a bootable USB
I have noticed the BIOS on this particular model is UEFI mode only, That in itself is not an issue as users can sign their own OS's with a CA and use them, however this laptop refuses to boot from any external medium...or even provide an error message.
I have changed the boot priorities in the BIOS and moved the USB to the top
I have disabled Secure Boot option in the BIOS
I have tried all 3 USB ports as well as 3 different drives (NOTE: THESE WORK FINE ON 3 OTHER SYSTEMS a dell laptop/desktop and an acer laptop)
I have also tried various distributions (Debian & Arch)
I have used multiple installation methods (Unetbootin/Full hard install/Rufus etc..)
I have tried all versions of your currently released BIOSs (Shipping with V1.0, Jan-V1.1 Feb-V1.2)
After trying all of these when pressing F12 at boot, the boot menu shows up but upon selecting a device the system continues to boot into the HDD (Win8)
After googling around I noticed you have released 2 BIOS updates I have tried all versions of these and still the system refuses to boot into my selected device
Can we expect any more firmware updates in the near future? Is there a way to workaround this issue to boot my chosen OS? Is there a CSM option?
    Edit: Punctuation
    null

Hi sorry about the multiple threads guys, the forums have been behaving a bit buggy over the past few days (anyone seen all the duplicates in the main satellite section?)
    Onto my problem,
Just to make it clear to joselu90 I'm not trying to install or "reinstall" windows 8 or anything, I would like to install a Linux distro if possible
I have been doing as much reading as possible about the bay-trail architecture etc
    In response to Tonny
+"This new Intel Bay Trail technology support only the UEFI capable devices and systems (Win 8, Win 8.1)"+
There are many Linux distro's capable of UEFI booting but some guidance on navigating toshiba's system would be very helpful
All I'm left with is this question that, "it should be possible to put another OS on this laptop" Or have Microsoft and Intel truly "jumped into bed with each other", so-to-speak and made it impossible to use any other software than their own? (I can't believe that to be the case) and we know for a fact that many Linux distributions support UEFI
    Thanks for your time,
P.S I have not marked this question as answered yet..

  • Toshiba Satellite L305 - can't boot from HDD

    Hi.
My laptop became useless a week ago after refusing to boot from the 640GB Samsung HDD.
For nearly 4 years I have been using it without any problem, with Toshiba, WD, Samsung disks, the later for nearly 2 years.
I was able to see the unbootable partitions after booting Linux (via external DVD), so the disk is okay.
System BIOS version is 2.20, I reinstalled Windows XP and the result was:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
After disabling the LAN from setup only tHE Windows message appered.
    Can't figure it out.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Satellite L305-S5933
    I reinstalled Windows XP
I don't understand. How can you do that if the hard disk is unavailable?
I was able to see the unbootable partitions after booting Linux
I would boot to the recovery console.
       Download Windows XP Recovery Console
Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console for advanced users
Run fixmbr to repair the master boot record and run fixboot to repair the boot record on the active partition.

    > When i log in bios hdd was detected but not available in boot priority menu. Just network adapter was there & now i cannot boot from hdd nither cd/dvd.
Does this means that neither HDD nor CD/DVD drive appears in the BIOS boot option?
Strange what notebook model do you have?
Did you try to set BIOS to default?
If not do this (press F9 and save the changes in BIOS)

  • G5 refuses to boot from external hard drive......

I have tried 3 different external firewire hard drive setups & it refuses to boot from any of them. This is extremely disturbing, because my trusty old G4 never had any issues like this. The latest one I tried is a Seagate enclosure (model # ST3500630AS), which is a Firewire external/SATA internal setup. The other one I have tried is my trusty old Kanguru S-80.0 (KU-35/81) - it has since been upgraded to a 120 GB drive internally. The third one I tried is a brand new Ultra enclosure (USB 2.0/Firewire 400) - the model# is ULT31310. This makes absolutely no sense. It will start to boot, but then it either gives me circle with a diagonal line through it or the Apple comes up & it just sits there (the fans will rev up after about a minute of sitting there). I cannot believe that 3 different firewire chipsets are not supported by the G5 for boot. If anyone has any ideas as to what is causing this problem, please let me know (It isn't a huge deal, as I can always yank the SATA backup drive & reinstall it into the G5 in an emergency, but I should be able to do it from an external drive). Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    G5 2.0 DC/Pismo 400   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.5 GB, 16x DL DVD Burner, Nvidia 6600 LE/512 MB, Still going strong

Did you reformat them to Mac Extended?
Did you install or clone the software onto the drive? what did you use?
Have you looked at OWC's FW cases? never had problem on my G4 or Mac Pro with their FW800 and 400 cases (all Oxford 911-912-924 which are mac friendly).
The Oxford 924 is FW800/400/USB2/SATA and accepts SATA drives.
    http://www.macsales.com
    You are getting kernel panics.
I avoid vendor cases. Most support PCs fine, but weak on Macs (even WD MyBook Pro).
One article today on Maxtor One Touch, older series, was that it would force a drive to 28-bit LBA mode, didn't support large 48-bit, and write to the drive's firmware. Again, avoid these vendor "solutions."
If you set it up and format it in Disk Utility, making sure to select Partition -> Options... APL format table, it should work. Other format types won't work.
Then use SuperDuper or Disk Utility to clone the drive (making sure that "ignore ownership" is OFF (not selected) in the Get Info for the drive volume.
I've got 8 FW cases from OWC and never had a problem with any.

  • Too bad mini server won't boot from an external drive

It won't. Enterprise TEch support confirmed this. I bought thew new mini server to get a good value fast machine with a quad i-7.
What's the purpose of Thuderbolt if my apps and doc folders have to reside on a SATA disk?
They really should have non server version with the i7 quad.
Even better Apple should make it clear that this is the case. Even the guy in the apple store said I coud boot it form an external drive!

Yes this will all take some time for sure.
If you want to keep lion server on your current machine, then yes, that is correct. It doesnt hurt to have a few spare 500gb+ hard drives to help the long process.
See there was previous controversy with the mac mini servers with the dual cores (the one I have) because we all wanted the better processors but to not run the server version and some also wanted to be able boot from other drives. Same as you..
In non lion versions of OSX you would normally put the SL Server DVD or SL DVD into your mac and instead of installing a fresh OS, you would select utilities , then restore from time machine backup. You could also obviously use an external drive or SD card with SL or SL server installer loaded on it to install the OS or perform the restore.
    That being said
I personally only know how to use a Snow leopard Server or Regular snow leopard installer DVD (or disc imaged external hard drive partition as just mentioned) to use time machine to restore an OS. I personally dont have experience with the lion disc repair for using its utilities to restore from a backup. Im sure it works the same way though when you hold option and boot from it..
If you are looking to go NON server on your OS you must have a Snow leopard retail version DVD (not leopard upgrade version)  to be installed on to an external drive.
So what you would do is Set up a partitioned external hard drive and load it up with Snow leopard, upgrade it in app store to lion ($29 ) , then update it with software update, back it up to another partition using time machine, then boot from the install dvd (or disc imaged partitioned installer of SL) , go to utilities, and select restore from backup, when its asks wher eto install choose the external you want to boot from (must be partitioned using GUID partition table) and install. When you want to boot from that drive, hold option right after you power up your machine until it gives you the option of the drive you want to boot from, select it and boot.
Unfortunately like I said you will have to have a snow leopard retail installer (no longer at the apple store only online or ebay for $30) and then would have to 'upgrade' to lion in order to NOT have lion server version on a mac mini set up for server.
If lion server version is good for you then yes do what you wrote in the reply would work. My experience with server snow leopard was that it was slower than snow leopard regular and it extremely interfered with my music production even though I was not running any of its server options..
    I hope this helps..

  • MacBook can't boot from HDD

    Hello friends!
Please help me with my macbook late 2009.
I was a problem with SMC conntroller and take mac to service. After one week i took it and all looks good, working for few days without any issues. Today, after 2 hours of use my mac is hung and i use hard reset to reboot it. After reboot, gray screen appears without any action. I tried to reboot it again and again and after 5-10 attempts I see all my disk partitions with recovery mode and tried to start DISK UTILITY to test hdd. Disk utility also hung on scanning disks. I have no luck to tried start it again - always gray screen, question folder or O with /. I tested old hdd with other mac and it's worked fine, I tried to use another, new 1Tb WD HDD 2.5 - connected it and try to power on with recovery flash drive. Mac started without issues and I can boot from flash drive, started disk utility but mac can't find new HDD at all. Please note - I use a lot of methods, tried to reset SMC / PRAM/VRAM without luck. Safe mode also not helped, verbose mode show me "Still waiting root device" error for old HDD, but sometimes mac show all my old disk partitions - after I chose Macintosh HD - I see O with / and that's all.
Please help me to figure out issue. I think this not a HW issue... but why mac not show new HDD? Really very strange problem, all day with tests w/o luck..SMC controller looks to be working fine - mac starts, charge battery, cooler speed is managed by motherboard fine.
May be new HDD is incompatible?
    Old HDD -
    Looking forward for your suggestions.

Looks like this is hdd flex cable issue... I just move it when mac starts and partition select menu appears instead of grey screen or question mark. When I select partition (recovery or macintosh hd) after 20-30 seconds I see O w /.
Can anyone confirm that this might be? I will order new flex so this should be solution or not? I read a lot of google links and see that this is often problem for 2009-2010 macs.
    Still waiting your advices
Apple should improve these type of cables as this not reliable as I think.

  • Won't boot from HDD

I made the mistake of running a Linux Live DVD on my MacPro 1.1 to see if it was as great as they say. When I took dvd out and reboot my machine I get an error message saying no boot disk found ( I think this is a resdual message from the Linux dvd). Make a long story short. My Mac will reboot into the Linux dvd, it will boot from a Windows 7 disk but it won't boot from either of my Snow Leopard install disks. Why is that? OH, and while it's in the press any key error mode, the usb keyboard won't work, no matter which usb port it's plugged into. How do I get the boot order to find the HDD without an OSX disk running?

Some additional information. I eventually pulled the HDD and plugged it into my iMac 27". Diskwarrior said the directories were damaged. I then supposedly repaired them. To test the drive I had the iMac reboot to that drive & it reboot fine. However when I plugged it back into the MacPro I got the grey screen with the Apple then it flickered back & forth between the Apple, a folder icon with a question mark and the universal NO icon (the circle with the diagonal slash). I'm wondering if the LINUX  dvd rewrote the GUID partition somehow?

  • Problem booting from Hdd

I have a problem booting from a external Hdd comes up with a command screen then a box with shutdown then restart any ideas

There must be something wrong with the data on the drive or it's hardware as you are experiencing a Kernel Panic. Run a repair on it maybe?

  • Re: Satellite L310 - Can't boot from HDD

    Hi
My L310 just died on me yesterday. My system just can't boot, not even in Safe Mode. And it keeps trying to boot via my network card, not through hard disk.
I have set it to the default BIOS settings but it doesn't help.
And it has this continuous loud beeping tone when it tries to boot via the network card. Beeping continues, even at the BIOS screen and during safe mode.
I have manually selected the hard drive but it keeps trying to boot through the network card.
And the laptop does not respond to the keyboard. Even with an external usb keyboard. When I sometimes manage to boot my system on the rare occasion, I arrive at the log in screen and can't key in my password.
    Does anybody have similar problems?
    Let me know. Thanks!

It looks like that your HDD is faulty. Does the BIOS recognize it?
You should test the HDD with Drive Fitness Test. Download the CD image, burn it on a CD and boot from it:
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
Check this and give us a feedback. Maybe the HDD must be replaced.
About the keyboard issue its not easy to say what causes the problem but in worst case it must replaced too. :(

  • Booting from HDD/SSD in optical drive bay.

Macbook Pro 15" non retina mid 2012    2.7 GHz  8GB RAM
    Hi,
A while ago I partitioned my hard drive and installed Windows 7.  I use it for gaming and eventually decided I would swap my superdrive out for a SSD so Windows could run on it’s own drive.
So I now have two drives, the original Seagate Momentus XT 750GB hybrid, and a new Samsung 840 EVO SSD 1TB.  Ideally I would like Windows 7 on the SSD, in the optical drive bay and OSX on the hybrid in the primary bay.  My only reason for that position is that I believe the hybrid would be less prone to overheating in the primary bay.  However, after a bit of research I believe Windows will only boot from the primary bay so I can live with either.
So far I have managed to boot Windows (on the SSD) from the primary bay.  Works well.  It would not complete booting from the optical bay.
OSX on the hybrid (this is my original drive before this upgrade) boots fine as usual from the primary but will NOT boot from the optical bay.  I get the apple and loading wheel only.
A clone of that OSX on an old HDD will boot fine from the optical bay.  When I booted from this drive in the primary bay I can see both the SSD and the hybrid if I have them in the optical bay and system profiler reads them well.
So my first question is; does anyone have any experience or knowledge of Momentus XT’s not working in the optical bay?  I believe they had some firmware updates years ago but my drive has always ran very well until I tried it from the optical bay.
My second question is; does anyone know if it is possible to persuade my macbook pro to boot Windows from the optical drive?
    Many thanks.

Well I suppose it looks like 6gb/s connection from the optical drive connection cannot be achieved on my mid 2012 model.  Would be nice to know if anyone else has achieved it...
