X1 annoying fan noise even in standby.

Yesterday I switched out my Cisco RNG200 black HD DVR for the new X1 DVR.   Receiver Native Ver 2.0.2
XRE Protocol Ver 2.8.0
Environment p6-k6 This X1 unit is the one with the blue LED power, which from my google searching tells me its the latest ?  Unfortuntely, there's a very annoying fan noise that has no way of turning itself off, unless i pull the power from the unit. Even in standby mode...  I only watch TV for a small percentage of my time spent in my living room, so to have to put up with a constant fan noise even when no TV is being watched is simply unacceptable.  It's coming in at 50db using SPL Meter on my iPhone next to it. and about 45db from my seating position.  Is this an inherrent design flaw of the unit, and will i be wasting my time and effort, switching the box out for something that will be equally as loud ?  I understand that this has an atom cpu and some form of cooling is req'd, but even while on standby?  At this point, i will have to go back to my local store and ask if i can either have my old RNG 200 back or move to a different provider, that has better designed hardware.  Unless I am just unlucky and that yes the fans do normally only spin up when req'd, and that i have a faulty box. Please advise.

Not as easy as just swapping unfortunately.  I've now been to two stores... Spent Fri, and Sat morning on this now. Even though they even had an Arris XG1-A as their display model, they tried to deny Arris made X1 boxes. That was at least until i showed them the underside of their own box, with the Arris sticker, and used my SPL meter app on my phone at the difference of noise coming from this box and the other Pace they had on show..  Regardless of which, they said, they didn't have any. But the lady was pretty good, she said, they could request a shipment of an X1 box, and only put it in the notes to make it an Arris box...  I guess i have a one in four chance...  I also took an Xi3 box, and that's proven to be a pain also... not in noise, but in activation. After an exchange at one of the local stores and it doing the same thing, and a lenghty call to customer service, i'm having a tech come out to look into the issue. Kudos to Comcast for having escalated this to one of their X1 tier 3 support teams, who was savvy enough to realize that there's nothing wrong with my signal, and that i probably need a Point of Entry Filter installed at my box outside...  Anyway, this whole X1 transition hasn't been much fun all in all.  I still have a noisy box, that i'm not going to be able to put up with.. Came downstairs this morning, and it was the first thing i heard... Hopefully the one that's being shipped will resolve...  I now know that the box can be hidden away somewhere completely different and have the remote control still work, but that isn't as simple as it may seem.. I'd still need to get an HDMI signal from the box to the TV, and it would involve cutting into my walls to run cat6 to accomplish that.  I may just opt for the old 80's style clunky i-guide, instead of the x1... if my third attempt of getting an Arris box fails... That or go to Dish, as the XOD has so many drawbacks on the older iGuide system.

  • Brand new macbook pro has annoying fan noises all the time

I just picked up my macbook pro 13'' with retina display from apple store today, and the first time when I start it, it generates constant annoying noise!  no applications run, nothing, from the moment I push the power button, it just give the noises... very disappointed at macbook pro.... Restart it, same, still gives out constant fan noises.... Even the $300, $400 cheap laptops don't have such problem....

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your Mac may be indexing files from the flash storage, and this may cause that your CPU usage is high. In this case, I recommend you to carry on using your Mac and fans will stop working at maximum speed soon.
Another thing you can try is to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 The SMC is the part that manages fans speed, and if it is not working correctly, fans may not be working properly.
If the SMC reset does not work and fans carry on working at maximum speed for a long time, return your Mac and get another one.

  • Annoying fan noise

I like everything about the new macbook air but except the fan noise. It is annoying that i am considering return it.
Watching Hulu(Flash based) is actually okay, acceptable fan noise.
Using Netflix is still okay, acceptable.
But when i use the Dishnetwork Sling player plugin to watch streaming video, and fan noise is so audiable that become annoying.
Looking at Acitivity Monitory, the system is about "60-65%" idle, while the plugin process CPU is 120-140%.
A 60-65% idle system can case the fan to be that loud, i couldn't imagine what will come next.
is Dish Sling plugin to blame? how many other software in future use in macbook air(not optipized for Lion i guess?? ) will have such fan issue?
return it  and get a macbook pro instead?

    Probably at least partially.
My fan, and I think everyone's fan, is running at a high rate of speed for certain high-intensity processes, especially concerning video rendering. The Air is an excellent machine with enough "horsepower" to do a great many things that heretofore were only reasonably possible on a MBP. There are tradeoffs though. one of them being a smaller fan,in a smaller package, is going to run with a little more intensity for the same task.
For me, the fan is a minor annoyance, offset by the advantages of the Air. But that's just me.
However, as Lion matures, and so do the developers abilities to turn out drivers and plug-ins that use resources more efficiently, we'll surely see some of these issues move in a positive direction.

  • Late 2013 15" rMBP fan noise even on 2D games

    Hello,
I have the latest model Apple Macbook Pro 15" with retina display. I'm using the basic model with 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, Haswell i7 cpu with integraded Intel Iris Pro 1gb gpu.
The problem is about the fans. I have never played a game on my mac before two months ago. Since then, when I play the fans get noisy and in a few minutes they start to spin at max rpm about 6000.
I have talked to Apple Customer service and they made me do it sth. like SMC, PRAM etc. However, it didn't fix anything, then I handle my mac to the nearest Apple Store.
They cleaned it and checked the system, according to their said the system works fine. I got it back today and whenever I came, I tried and it happened again.
Just for an instance, I launched "Bridge Constructer Free" game and wait for about 3 minutes. After all, the fans were spinning at over 6000 rpm but meanwhile the system was not hot, it was a bit cool, just about 45 celcius degree.
On the other tasks, like web surfing, playing a full HD video or daily things, it works perfect. I've never heard the fan noise and feel the heat. Otherwise, on nearly every game I played, it happened. Although the system is under 50 celcius degree, the fans used to spin at max rpm.
Also we tried the same thing but it didn't happen on my friend's late 2013 13" rMBP.
This thing really irritates me because it leds to a such noise. Without taking earphones on, I am not able to use the mac comfortably.
Can you help me to solve this issue please?
    I'm adding a screenshot below to see the values;

I am not sure of the thermal limit for the haswell processors, but for Intel's previous generation processors installed in the rMBP lineup, the thermal limit was 100C (212F). Extended exposure to temperatures exceeding this could damage the CPU. What software are you using to manually control the fans? I wouldn't recommend manually controlling the fans. Let the internal heat sensors do their thing. Your rMBP will shutdown if the processor reaches dangerous temperatures for extended periods of time. I wouldn't say that this behavior is abnormal given the amount of heat your GPU generates when rendering graphics intensive games. Just make sure to keep the fan vent unobstructed at all times and a cooling pad never hurts.
Uninstall the software you are using to manually control the fans, reset the SMC, test and see if temperatures fall:

  • Annoying Fan Noise - HP can u Help ???

I have HP Dv2700 laptop with Windows 7, and it's making continuous fan noise.
Is there any one in HP that can solve this issue ?
Also searched for new BIOS  that can update, but didn't find one for windows 7 (currently running : Phoenix F.2D)
Do I need to Clean the FAN ?? Post video or instructions if need to bisect my laptop ?

    Hey Yes1984,
    Here is your Fan Doc,
Reducing Fan Noise Notebooks (Windows 7)
It will help you with cleaning "how to".  Whether you open iup the case depends on if you have a warranty - crack the case and lose the warranty...  The fans do run on these things.  Once the unit is clean, you can run some heat checks, make sure you keep it elevated, never treat it like a "laptop" (it is NOT a laptop), maybe stick a cooler under it...

  • Audible fan noise even when idle.

    I have a 2.2Ghz Macbook 10.5.1 4GB Ram.
WHENEVER I use the laptop I can hear the fan. It is not loud just a constant low drone in the background. Enough to be distracting.
It is running at 1800rpm. CPU temp ~38oC, processor usage pretty much zero for ten minutes.
I only ever heard the fan on my old iBook when running intensive activities.
    Is this normal?

1800 rpm is the lowest fan speed, it is normal, however, there shouldn't be much of a sound except for a lil' wind blowing sound in the exhaust.

  • IMac 20" Fan Noise

I am very fussy about computer noise.
I have returned a 17" iMac G5 once due to the annoying buzzing of the fans (specifically the hard drive fan) that sounded nothing short of an RC model airplane buzzing around.
So I thought I would hear the same with the Intel Duo Core, but would just deal with it this time.
    WOW! What a surprise!
This computer is so quiet I could not believe it. When the fans do ramp up, they are a dull ambient sound which is fine with me. I just did not want the high pitched RC-sounding annoying fan noise from the previous G5 models.
I drove the CPU to 100% on both processors for over an hour (multiple times) and the fans are significantly easier on the ears than the G5.
So if you are hesitating on your purchase because of possible noise issues, I would say buy the new iMac.
    You will be impressed.

I can be very critical and nit-picky about the computers I buy.
But I must say that Apple has left me speechless on this one!
No problems at all. I added another 512 meg ($100) from the local Apple Store to give me 1 gig RAM total. Naturally, everything is that much faster as well.
Mind you, though, that I have the 20" iMac Intel Duo Core with 128 megs Video RAM (not the seemingly problematic 256 meg).
Front Row works great with no problems.

  • Do MacPRo mid 2010 models run with level fan noises or uneven whine?

Apple is replacing my mid-2010 mainly because of a disturbing modulating, up and down, fan noise problem. Not sure of the source. At first thought it was 5870 graphic card, but haven't been able to nail down exactly why.
They claim that these machines run with a very even level noise, and that this breathing or modulating noise is not the norm.
I have read that these machines, relative to earlier models, are quiet hummers, at least relatively.. Do most people with this year's model have machines running at a constant noise level or do the fan noises, even at idle, modulate and whine up and down, even with light usage...or on idle. I don't want a replaced machine with the same issue. I do work in a quiet environment, and don't mind the fan noise, but the modulations of up and down sound like a tunnel and I need to turn off the computer at times. Model is 3.2 ghz quad core, with ati 5870 graphic card.
    thanks

I am very much interested in comparison here too. Unfortunately our local reseller doesn't have any Mac pros to compare (they deliver only when you make an order:(). So I have no other machines to compare...
So I've read a lot of forums and generally there's no simple answer anywhere. People say that their hdd/optical is making more noise than fans. That's true to my case. Hdd/optical indeed sound louder than fans. From the other hand, I work in very quiet environment (no street noise, no ventilation noises in the room or whatever) and my new Mac Pro sounds... well loud! Once again - relatively it is QUIET, I can hear older PC from the other room (and the 'other room' connects through a corridor so...). Still, a lot of people mention that they literally don't hear ANYTHING from their mac pros except for hdd/optical operation sounds. I do hear fan noise...
So i was wondering is my room too quiet/ear too sharp;) or is there some kind of a problem with the mac pro and I should bother contacting retailers?
Anybody here who can compare their mac pro's with say mac book pros? I clearly hear fans of my mac book pro (even being idle) in the main working room and mac pro is like 2-3 (may be 4) times louder than mac book pro. This might be OK for tower, but definitely it is not 'dead silent'...
So far I've even tried some iPhone decibel measurement apps (yeah it's not even close to 'pro' measurements but no other means are available to me at the moment). They doesn't notice mac book (most noise measurement devices as far as I've read don't count noises beneath 40 dB for good), but mac pro is about 42-43 dB while idle at some 10 inch from the machine and some 45-46 if I bring the mic like 3-4 inches to the case. Is it like OK or what? Unfortunately all Mac pros I've heard before where in environments where even my 42-46 dB would be completely lost, so i cannot judge if it is OK. It is still one of the quietest towers I've heard/owned but those posts about 'dead silent' and 'only hdd/optical' make me a bit uncomfortable...
Oh, and the modulation. Indeed idle operation has some modulation. As far as I can tell it comes not from varying speed of the fans but rather from how frequencies of the fans inside of the case are different and modulate when added to each other (like those FM/AM in the synthesizers). More to say, there are angles in a room where other frequencies are heard (probably reflections produce some additional modulations)...

    So...
Which CPU did you get?  The i7-29xx CPU has a larger (and noisier - even at lower rpms - cooling unit) than the 27xx and 28xx.
Thats why I picked the i7-2820.

I have a new Lenovo M30-70 4210U. I upgraded RAM and HDD->SSD, installed clean Windows. It's making a lot of fan noise, even when standing still / idle. What to do?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
Was the fan making the same noise prior to the clean install of Windows?  If not, try installing the Lenovo Power Management driver if you haven't done so already

  • DM3 (New 2010 model) - FAN NOISE - Constantly Running LOUD

This is the first HP to use "Cool Sense" technology. Yes, it is cool but at the expense of FAN NOISE.  The fan runs constantly even when Thermal Assistant is set to "Quietest." Just an open browser window at 0-10% cpu makes the fan run all the time! PLEASE READ my Notes below.
After monitoring the temps, the fan still needlessly runs on medium speed even after the temperatures drop (CoreTemp gives [core#0 28C & core#1 37C] at idle powersaver).  Anyone can comment on the 9C difference?
I believe hp still need to tweak the "Thermal Assistant" fan controller or raise the temperature thresholds. PLEASE HELP - VERY ANNOYING PROBLEM
Note: Latest F.08 bios & Turned OFF "Fan Always On." Computer is NEW (no dust). Used on Tabletop. Used both powersaver mode & balanced.

Try doing a SMC AND PRAM reset by:
    1. Turn off your iMac and unplug everything from it for 30 seconds.
    2. Plug in the power cord, keyboard and mouse only.
    3. Press the power button and immediately hold down the Option, Command, P & R keys until you hear the second gong then release the keys. Your machine will start up normally, then check for the issues you are having.

  • Updated to Mavericks and loud fan noise

Just done a clean install of Mac OS X Mavericks, updated fine, everything went well.
however most of the time, my macbook pro fan noise would go really loud for 5-10mins even in idle or if im on the internet just browsing.
this has not happened ever on mountain lion.
    its really weird.
Does anybody know how to fix this? or is this a bug and would i have to wait for a software update?

    Hello all,
I am having the same issue, constant loud fan noise in my Mac book pro. Below are the specs:
    "MacBook Pro
    13-inch, Mid 2010
Processor  2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9 (13A603)"
    And CPU is 90% idle.
I tried to reset the SMC using the steps:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Plug your Mac in, if not already plugged in.
    3. Press (left side) Shift-Control-Option & the power button at the same time.
    4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Inaddition, i have reinstalled OS and reset PRAM memory but the problem still exists.
It really feels annoying with the fan sound. Could someone give a fix.

  • WRT1900AC Fan Noise

My WRT1900AC router runs hot all the time even when there is no internet usage. I wake up and it's running extremely hot. I'm come home from work and it's already running hot. The fan used to be quiet. All I heard were ticks. Soon after it became an audible small fan noise. Now it's an annoying small fan on full blast with annoying coil whine to boot. The fan turns on 1-3 times an hour. I have kept it in an open space.

What all is connected to it. Where is the router place? In a open, well ventalated area on  wooden shelf or desk is recommended and not in direct sun light. What ISP service and Mfr and model # of the modem you use? Disconnect all but one or two devices to see if the router runs cooler. What is your uptime and load rate when you log into 192.168.1.1\sysinfo.cgi. Post this here in the thread. Also as a extra measure you can place a laptop cooler under the router and us it for additonal cooling if you need. They run quiet.

  • Intermittent fan noise

I've got a G5 quad, been running fine. Over the past 3 days the fan has intermittently come on. It "revs" up very briefly sometimes, other times it comes on strong for several seconds. Any ideas about what's happening. Environmental temperature hasn't change for several weeks.
    Thanks

I have 2 Power Mac G5 and both have increased the fan speed since I last turned the "on" with the side covers opened. I tried resetting the SMU and PMU button on the logic board a few times, as instructed by Apple support with no success.
Annoying noise but I learned to live with it. Computers work fine, sleep mode and all. The only problem is the loud fan noise. Is there a software or something that can be done? I even thought about disconnecting the fans leaving without, but I suppose they will burn.
