X1 Carbon Gen 3 - maximum external display configuration?

Hello,
I am considering the X1 Carbon Gen 3 for purchase.  However, I would like to know if it is possible to drive three external displays.
I currently have two running at 1920x1200 and one running at 2560x1440.
Looking at the notes on the OneLink Pro doc seems to indicate this is not possible with the X1 Carbon.
And while we are at it, same question for the T450S with the 90W Ultra Dock.  Looks like it is no problem for that configuration but I just want to check and confirm before I buy another machine.
Thanks!

Received my X1 Gen3 and a OneLink Pro dock; here's what  I found:
- The mini-DP connector on the X1 Gen3 can support two external monitors at full 2560x1600 resolution (Dell U3014), along with the built-in display, all active.  And, my U3014 monitors are in portrait orientation and the trackpad orientation is fully correct.  I didn't try using the HDMI at the same time.
- The OneLink Pro dock will connect to a single U3014 monitor, but the system will not support connecting to a second U3014 over the DP output on the OneLink Pro dock (neither via an external DP hub, nor via the DP hub built into the U3014).  Seems the OneLink Pro dock has an internal DP hub and is using a DP terminal device to provide the DVI output, and this device seems like it can't be disabled even when not using the DVI output.  One significant problem: with a U3014 in portrait orientation connected to the dock, the laptop trackpad orientation was incorrect for the two monitors!
- With the OneLink Pro dock connected (but no monitors connected to the dock), I can connect a separate mini-DP cable to the X1Gen3 and use the system on two U3014 monitors with the laptop closed.  This gets me close to what I need, though I wish Lenovo had a dual-DP dock (or a dock with a single DP output, no additional outputs) - the current situation requires two cables to the X1Gen3, but at least the DP connection is much better than a USB3 connection.

  • Maximum external display size?

i've got a 12 inch ibook with an ati 9550 w/ 32mb of vram and i want to upgrade my external monitor from 1024x768 to a much larger 19-20" widescreen. does anyone know what that specific video card can handle? thanks a mill.
    gabe

If you are using VGA, the iBook only supports these resolutions:
    640 by 480 pixels at 60 Hz
    800 by 600 pixels at 75 Hz
    1024 by 768 pixels at 75 Hz
It really doesn't matter if the display is 2" across or 20 feet across. For a given resolutions, the pixels will be bigger on a bigger display... there won't be more pixels.
Same principal if you are using the S-video or composite video output.

  • Carbon w Closed Lid & External display?

I have a 32" LCD and i want to keep the Carbon below it inside a stand shelf nicely tucked below connected to the port replicator.
    is it possible?
i am aware Windows 8 allows to keep the laptop on while the lid is closed, but would the lcd stay on and get damaged?
is there a custom option for such a scenario as i describe? i dont want to use the Carons display or keyboard, just the cpu/hd/video

Sorry, I don't know the answer. I just wanted to report that my setup with MBA and 23" Cinema Display works the way you would expect. If nobody else has a solution, taking it in to the Apple Store seems like a good idea. It should be easy for them to reproduce the problem.

  • Maximum External Display Size for GT70 Dominator Pro 889?

Hey all, new to the forums. I tried googling the subject question but cant seem to find anything. Just got my GT70 Dominator Pro 889, it has the 17.3 inch display, GTX 880 8 GB, 16 GB RAM, i7-4810, and a TB HD with a 128 GB SSD. I figured I'd test it out on my Samsung 60 inch LED TV. It has a refresh rate of 120 HZ and is full HD 1920x1080. I assumed the laptop could handle it but this would be the first time I tried something like this, I always used to use desktops that I build for gaming till now. I ran Max Payne 3 all graphics to the max. Now on just the laptop screen I get insanely solid frame rates, no question about that. I tried using my big screen and the game chugs and struggles with FPS under 20. My question is is my TV wayyyy too big to handle gaming from the laptop or is there something I'm missing? I know this is meant to have an additional 3 screens running at once but I figured why not with the TV but I'm aware 60 inches is a lot of ground to cover.

    Hi,
What I think is that it's mainly because it's @120Hz, rather than standard 60. 1920x1080 should be easily handled, as even with my low end notebook (nvidia gt315, i3) I was using my TV @1920x1080 with 60Hz and the only fps drop was around 5 in game like Modern Warfare 2.
Also: it is capable of 3 screens, but not really for such heavy gaming. Even highest end GPU won't handle game at highest settings and with 3 screens; lower video settings a bit from highest and see how it goes. Also make sure that NB's screen is not going to be used while you use TV.

  • Macbook Pro, how to reset invalid external display resolution?

Hi there. I have a question about the external display configuration.
I recently connected my 2011 Macbook Pro 13" (10.8.2 Mountain Lion) to an external HD-TV using Thunderbolt to VGA adapter. After connecting the TV had 1920x1200 resolution which made the text and everything look very tiny. So I thought I'd lower the resolution a bit. But then I messed up and accidentally changed the resolution and refresh rate for the external display to one that wasn't supported. So the TV went black and gave an error about an invalid resolution. At the same time, on my Macbook screen I had only the background image and display settings dialog. No mouse cursor, no menu bar, no dock etc. So I couldn't do anything.
I disconnected the Thunderbolt adapter and got my Macbook screen back to normal, but when I plugged it in again, the same thing happened. Invalid resolution on TV, just background image and display settings on Macbook screen.
Now, this was just before I was going to give a presentation and it resulted in a very awkward situation with me franticly re-plugging the Thunderbolt adapter and looking just completely clueless In the end I had to borrow my colleague's laptop.
So my question is: when this happens, is there a way I can reset / clear the external display settings back to defaults? They are obviously saved somewhere since replugging the Thunderbolt adapter didn't give me back my original resolution.

A PRAM reset should solve that:
    From the article linked above:
Your Mac stores certain settings in a special memory area even if it is turned off.  On Intel-based Macs, this is stored in memory known as NVRAM; on PowerPC-based Macs, this is stored in memory known as PRAM.
Information stored in NVRAM / PRAM includes:
    Speaker volume
    Screen resolution
    Startup disk selection
Recent kernel panic information, if any
    To reset your PRAM:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • External display - maximum resolution only works in safe mode on MBP

I'm having an issue with an external display connected to a 2012 non-retina MacbookPro 15" i7 running 10.9.  Monitor is Dell U2713HM, which has a maximum resolution of 2560x1440, and is connected via a Mini-Dipslayport to Displayport cord.
My setup has been working great for over a year, where while at my office I use the macbook closed in "clamshell mode" with the Dell monitor being the only display in use, running at 2560x1440.  However today when I came into my office and connected to the dispay as usual, the resolution on the Dell was noticably scaled.  System preferences is showing it running Scaled at 1080p, and when I select Best for Display it stretches to a very wide and distorted resolution.  I can hold alt and click the Scaled button to display additional resolutions, however the maximum resolution listed is 1600x1200.  Same problem regardless of clamshell, mirror, or extended desktop modes.
I've been trying to track down the problem, and have run though the usual procedures: restart, shutdown, reset PRAM, reset SMC, check cord connections, verify disk, repair disk permissions - all to no avail.  However when I boot in safe mode the display runs as it should at 2560x1440 without issue, which lets me know its not a problem with the cord or connectioin, but rather something on the OS / GPU side.
I can't for the life of me figure out what is causing the issue.  Considering its been working fine for quite some time, and I've made no unusual changes to the MBP in the past 48 hours when the display was working properly, I'm not really sure where to go from here.   Hoping to not have to migrate to a new user or repartion my HDD.
    Any suggestions on possible solutions?
    Thanks.

I stumbled upon a fix.  Still not sure what caused the issue in the first place, but for anyone having the same issue, the display override script contained on the site below seems to have fixed the issue.

  • Whats the maximum resolution resolution supported @ 60 Hz on an external display for mid 2014 macbook pro retina 13 inch ?

whats the maximum resolution supported @ 60 Hz on an external display for mid 2014 macbook pro retina 13 inch ?

I don't know where you found 1920x1080, but that isn't the max. The INTERNAL display can even support more than that.
The maximum resolution is really hardware based, and since Thunderbolt 2 has a Mini displayport connector (Mini Displayport 1.2), the max resolution for Mini Displayport is 4k (3840x2160).
PLEASE NOTE: Not all adapters can support that resolution, most monitors that can run 4k @60Hz have Displayport 1.2 (The most recent revision), Mini Displayport 1.2, and HDMI 2.0. DVI dual link can run 4k, but only 24-30Hz, depending on the monitor.
    Hope this helps!!

  • Maximum Thunderbolt/VGA resolution for external displays?

    Hi there
Until recently, I've been using a Macbook Air Core 2 Duo with a MiniDisplayPort output. This is connected via the Apple MiniDisplayPort > VGA adaptor to an LG Flatron W2246 22" display, and running 1920x1080 quite happily.
I recently bought the Macbook Pro 15" quad core i7 with the Intel HD 3000 and AMD Radeon 6490M - a much more powerful machine with a much more powerful graphics card.
However, it only seems to allow me a maximum resolution of 1600x1200 on the Thunderbolt external display port - it won't give me an option for 1080p.
Any ideas? It seems strange that the Macbook Air will give me higher resultions!
    Thanks

I had similar issues to Jason with the technical documentation. It was clear on the maximum resolutions for the laptop's screen and the max resolution on an external monitor, and the max for single and dual link DVI on the adapter pages, but vague on VGA.
I suspected it should work since I have a PC laptop with a graphics card that is a generation behind that can do the full res of my monitor over VGA, but thank you BSteely for confirming this.

  • I am getting "The contents cannot be displayed in a frame" error when tried to acces an external URL configured through launchpad(ESS). How to rectify it?

    Hi Guys,
We have configured ESS role through launchpad. For viewing payslips we are using an external URL configured through launchpad.
But when we try to access the configured link in ESS role, it displays "The contents cannot be displayed in a frame" .
Should I need to change some parameters/settings in Launchpad so that I could overcome this issue.

    Hi Shankar Reddy Chamala,
    Thanks for the alternate solution.
But the solution you have provided also ended up with the same error

Some additional information so that you could help me out,
The following is the test report .

The tester has mentioned the yellow highlighted property may be a cause for this issue.
I googled that the highlighted property is set by the website owners for security reasons.
    Shankar I have another doubt..
Is it feasible to create an HTML document to open the external link and link the HTML document to the iview and then configure the custom iview with launchpad.?
-->If yes can you please elaborate the steps for it.

  • Configuring Multiple External Displays EliteBook 8470P

I have an EliteBook 8470P with the AMD Radeon 7570M display adapter.  I am looking to use to external displays as well as the laptop display.  Can I use both the VGA and Display port outputs to accomplish this without purchasing a docking station?  And are there any settings that I need to change to do this?

    Max,
Simply plug in two monitors out of the dock's DP and DVI port.
The third display connects to the laptop's DP port.
    Best of luck, and enjoy!

  • 10.4 and long waits configuring external displays

I have recently upgraded to 10.4.2. When I connect an external projector to my PB it takes at least 4 times longer than 10.3 for the PB to:
    1. detect the external display
    2. set the external display resolution
I am spending forever with "blue screens of wait" while the PB sorts itself out.
Anyone else had this experience? This delay is so bad I am considering going back to 10.3.

  • External Display Flickers (Intel on board)

    Hi,
I have recently made a fresh installation of Arch Linux and trying to setup it for my work environment. I made a basic installation of xfce4 with slim login manager. I wanted to hook my laptop with an external display. I used xrandr to extend my laptop display with the external display. Everything worked fine but my external display flickers insanely bad. I cannot stare at it for > 30s. I dual boot on windows, so I tested the same setup with windows and it worked just fine, out of the box. I even used one of my friend's laptop who's running ubuntu and has the same h/w. It worked out of the box. I have spent more than 8 hours trying to find out where the issue would be and miserably failed. Below are certain logs and output that might help traingulate my issue.
Its a Dell Inspiron N4030, with Intel onboard graphics. I have the xf86-video-intel driver installed and the display works perfectly fine with laptops default display.
