X1 noisy keys

Hi,
I bought me a X1 and so far I am quite happy with it on day 1. However, two of the keys are somewhat noisy and I am wondering if and how I could fix it.
The 'w' key makes quite a loud click noise once it is depressed. The sound is not there if pressed on the far right side. Pressing the key multiple times in succession does not change the sound.
All other keys are rather silent which makes the 'w' stand out - one could hear if just I typed in something with 'w' in it.
The other key is the 'left arrow' key, which makes a high-pitched click once pressed. The sound tends to be less audible after the key is pressed several times in a row. The 'right arrow' key is always silent in comparison.
Anything I could try to fix this? Does the noise go away with continued use?
Lastly, I feel like I really have to press the trackpoint buttons down hard to register a left or right click. I'm used to the older all-black trackpoint buttons which are smaller, more silent and register a click no matter from which angle they are pressed.
The trackpoint buttons on the X1 don't reliable register a click for me if not pressed in the center. For example, I have trouble left clicking with my right thumb when using the trackpoint one-handedly with the right hand. Is this normal for the new trackpoint buttons?
Thank you for your help!
David

Hi -
My keys don't rattle at all ...I'd suggest doing a 'side by side' with the Macbooks at the Apple store and seeing if there is a difference. If there is a problem it may be a simple fix such as replacing the topcase.
There shouldn't be any noise difference between different parts of the keyboard.

  • Noisy key, worthless apple store?

    I have a six month old macbook retina.  The left command key is 10 times noisier than any other key.  CLACK CLACK CLAK.  As a developer I use the key  all day long and it is insanely terrible.  I took off the button, inspected everything, cleaned everything (nothing was dirty) just to be safe and reassembled.  The noise was better and each day it got worse over a few days until it was the same.
    Next I took it down to my local apple store.  The guy takes it in the back, comes back out 25 minutes later, says he cleaned a lot of sticky food out from the key and its good to go.  Now remember I just had the key off and it was spotless.  I also don't eat by my laptop.  So while he took the key off and put it back on he also lied.  The noise was gone for a moment (just like before) and came back over a few days.
    This time I took the key off again and did some experiments.  What I found out was the problem is the metal U that adds some additional support to the key, at the top.  It seems like the legs of the U aren't long enough and over a lot of key presses come out from where they are supposed to be.  Possibly the metal bracket has something missing, I'm not sure what it should look like.  The sound I am hearing is metal on metal clacking back into place!
    I left the metal support bracket out and put the key back together.  It is now as silent as all the other keys.
    My question is what is the long term ramifications of leaving this metal bracket out?  If my key fails then I will put the bracket back in before returning to the apple store, where hopefully they will be better next time.
    Thanks!

    Sorry to break this to you but you had a Year to have it fixed. Also you had a Year to buy the Applecare extended warranty. You knew of the problem and made the conscious decission to do nothing about it until your warranty had expired.
    Poor choice to say the least.

  • How can I stop a sound from looping so it plays only once each time the up key is pressed?

    Hi there here is my code, the basis is it is playing a mp3 from my library.
    Basically as the topic suggests I only want the sound to play once each time the UP arrow key is pressed. At the moment when you hold the up arrow down the sound keeps triggering and looping and gets really loud and noisy.
    Here is my code for my game:
    package com.chasegame.components
              import flash.display.MovieClip;
              import flash.display.Stage;
              import flash.events.Event;
              import com.tech.utils.KeyObject;
              import flash.ui.Keyboard;
              import flash.media.Sound;
              import flash.media.SoundChannel;
              public class SpaceShip extends MovieClip
                        private var key:KeyObject;
                        private var speed:Number = 0.3;
                        private var rotateSpeed:Number = 5;
                        private var vx:Number = 0;
                        private var vy:Number = 0;
                        private var friction:Number = 0.95;
                        private var shipSound:roar = new roar();
                        private var shipSoundChannel:SoundChannel = new SoundChannel();
                        public function SpaceShip () : void
                                            key = new KeyObject(stage);
                                            addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, loop, false, 0, true);
                        public function loop(e:Event) : void
                                            if (key.isDown(Keyboard.UP))
                                                           vy += Math.sin(degreesToRadians(rotation)) * speed;
                                                           vx += Math.cos(degreesToRadians(rotation)) * speed;
                                                           shipSoundChannel = shipSound.play();
                             else
                                                           vy *= friction;
                                                           vx *= friction;
                                  if (key.isDown(Keyboard.RIGHT))
                                            rotation += rotateSpeed;
                                  else if (key.isDown(Keyboard.LEFT))
                                            rotation -= rotateSpeed;
                                  y += vy;
                                  x += vx;
                                  if (x > stage.stageWidth)
                                            x = 0;
                                  else if (x < 0)
                                            x = stage.stageWidth;
                                  if (y > stage.stageHeight)
                                            y = 0;
                                  else if (y < 0)
                                            y = stage.stageHeight;
                        public function degreesToRadians(degrees:Number) : Number
                                  return degrees * Math.PI / 180;

    If you want the sound to only play once when the key is pressed then you don't want to have it in the ENTER_FRAME event handler like you have it.  It is starting new sounds at the frame rate of your file the way you have it now.
    Try having an event listener dedicated to a KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN event where you detect when the UP key gets pressed and use that to trigger playing the sound.

  • Tips for avoiding "noisy" images in low-light

    Hi all,
    I noticed that there are a lot of users here who are complaining of noisy images especially in low-light. I'm not a professional photographer or anything but I have been playing a lot with the camera of my Xperia Z1 and I did have noisy images also at first.
    Here is my tip: Use these settings:
    Go to Manual Mode.
    Shoot in either 8MP 4:3 or 16:9 (don't worry about not making use of the 20MP, because its still doing oversampling to improve the quality of the 8MP image by making use of the whole 20MP sensor).
    Set Stabilizer to off
    ISO to Auto (if you prefer more detailed images, set ISO to a lower value but take note of the exposure of the image and that there is a chance of motion blur due to the longer shutter speed necessary to capture low light at low ISO)
    WB Auto (or your preference).
    With the setting I use above, I've seen improvements on low-light capability (indoors, artificial lighting, or night outdoor scene for example) and quality of my camera pictures. Note though that this will not be applicable for extreme low-light. Its very normal to capture really noisy images when shooting in extreme low-light (even my dedicated compact camera has troubles too).
    Here is my theory why its taking noisy images by default. In Superior Auto, I analyzed the EXIF data of the pictures I've shot. It seems that Superior Auto is really excessive in bumping up the ISO (thus resulting in more noisy images) to compensate for having a faster shutter speed (reduced motion blur). Thus what you get is a noisy image that is bright and freezes the motion. For example, test it out that in Superior Auto, even minute movements of the phone will trigger the Sports Mode (running man icon near the button) prioritizing a faster shutter speed at the cost of a higher ISO.
    Another reason I have for turning off the Stabilizer in Manual Mode is the same. In contrast to Steady Shot used in recording movies (sensor based shift to compensate for handshake movements), I think the Stabilizer option basically just bumps up the ISO also to compensate for handshake movements. I"m not entirely 100% sure but so far, I've been satisfied with taking images with the Stabilizer Off.
    Please feel free to test it out and report the results if there have been improvements. I'm still testing it out too! One of the things I wish for Sony to put in the Camera App are just these 3 things:
    1.) Holding Shutter Key will open the Camera app with the LAST CONFIGURED SETTINGS
    2.) Maximum ISO can be set in Manual Mode
    3.) Scene AUTO mode for Manual Mode (I know it might be redundant but it would be nice to have Auto mode for 4:3 orientation images).
    Again, hope to hear from others what are their settings or if they notice any improvements in images captured.
    Thanks!

  • Apple's latest noisy powerbook drives me crazy

    I posted this on silentpcreview.com, and re-post here to share you with my experience with the latest apple product.
    I just returned the latest verison of powerbook 12" to apple. Because it's so noisy.
    I choose apple's laptop because many people in this forum said apple's laptop is very quiet. But that is not ture, at least for the latest laptop from apple (made since Nov. 2005)
    The laptop has a G4 cpu running at 1.5Ghz, 80G Toshiba HD at 5400rpm, and a 64MB 3D card from Nvidia.
    When I first turn on the powerbook G4 I notice the noise comes from the left part of the laptop. It seems the cooling fan is running all the time at low rpm. Together with the working noise from HD, it's impossible not to be disturbed in a quiet room working in front of the laptop.
    I phoned apple saying the fan is always on, which is obviously uncommon. This book also has some problem reading os x dvd disc. They then arrange a replacement for me.
    When I got the replacement (which is also brand new), I think this one should be quiet, but again I'm wrong. The background noise is the same as the first one I got. After consulting apple's user discussion forum, I found such noise is considered normal for a powerbook G4.
    The book also runs hot very quickly. I already runs it at reduced speed (1Ghz), and lift the case with a notebook stand. The temp. of the cpu quickly jumps to 45C in 30 minutes even I'm just composing an email. Then the *real fan* turns on, with very loud noise for 1 minutes, only to drive down temp. by 3C. Then after 5 or 10 minutes, the temp. goes up to 45C again and the fan kicks in again. This happens even I'm just listening music through itunes which typically has a cpu usage of 15-20%.
    The really bad thing happens when I watch a movie encoded in h.264 using quicktime7, a format apple said providing "stunning quality". Unfortunately, enjoying the "stunning quality" means the cpu will work at 70-80% (at reduced clock rate of 1G), and the cooling fan will run crazily all the time! A good movie can be easily ruined by the noise from the cooling fan. In fact I only watch a movie for 40 minutes and then quit quicktime because of the noise.
    I then made a test: just turn on the powerbook and does not run any application, then the fan will fire up in one and a half hour! After that, the fan will kick in every 10 minutes, and I'm sure the cpu usage is as low as 5%!
    I phoned apple again, and again they said it's normal, since the fan will kick in whenever the cpu is too hot.
    I'm fed up with the hot issue. Beside this, the 'A' key drops out of the keyboard after one day of use! I finally ask a refund to end my very unpleasant experience with the latest powerbook.
    Now I understand why Apple will switch to intel's chip next year, power G4 is simply too hot for a laptop.
    If the ibook 1.25Ghz is quiet, I probabily will get an ibook instead. Or wait till Jan. next year when apple release its Pentium based intel laptop.
    Or should I get a laptop from ibm or dell?
    What's your opinions?
    Thanks,
    ejoy

    Hi
    can you please tell me how u set up the cpu freq from
    1.5 GHZ to 1 GHZ?
    Just set cpu to run in reduced performance in the Energy Saver, which should run around 1Ghz.
    While typing this, the cpu is around 55C, and the fan has been working for the past 30 minutes without stop (the laptop has been turned on for 3hr). the keypad is really hot now. I do not think many people can stand such a hot and noisy notebook.
    Anyway I think the after-sale service of apple in uk is very good. They are very polite to speak to and will arrange a collection of my powerbook then issue a refund. No hassel at all. I just hope apple's hardware could be as good.

  • Why is the fan of my Macbook Air suddenly so noisy?

    It has become very noisy. The fan is running constantly. I never heard the fan before. Has something broken. The performance has not changed but it takes much more to start up and shut down.

    Hi aschicchi,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
    Here are a few troubleshooting steps to address your fan issue:
    Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    "...these symptoms may indicate that an SMC reset may be necessary:
    Fans
    The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated."
    Before Resetting the SMC
    Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
    Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
    Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosingSleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
    Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
    Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
    Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    Shut down the computer.
    Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
    I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!

  • Lightroom 4.4 jpeg export VERY noisy...HELP!

    Hi all,
    I have Googled and quite aware of the noisy jpeg output for v5 onwards.
    But I'm still using 4.4 and all I found on Google is threads for v5.
    Has anyone experienced this noisy jpeg export issue?
    Here's a screengrab comparing the two.

    If you're seeing a reduction of noise in the Export when you increase the Lum NR slider, then it's not a bug preventing the Lum NR from being applied.
    Besides increasing the noise-reduction and not sharpening the remaining noise during Export, the other thing to do is use sharpen masking to prevent non-edges from being sharpened.  You use the Mask slider in the sharpen section to accomplish this.
    If you hold down the Alt key while moving the Mask slider you can see what areas will have sharpening applied.  Make sure that it is only the edges, not the areas between where noise is the only detail or texture.  The mask slider will probably be close to 100 for optimal results with a noisy image.
    You should expect there to be a little grain left in the image.

  • [X220] space bar key noise reduction

    Since a while the space bar key is much noisier than other keys, especially if not pressed in the center. Before to get a replacement keyboard I'dl like to clean and eventually put a little of oil on hinger under the key. Can You tell me how can I remove the space bar key with no risk to break or wiken the key itself ?  Thanks, Stefano. P.S.: I've already changed the keyboard some time ago. I'm using this one from about 5 months

    Hi TheLiar,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
    I regret to inform you that we cannot remove individual keys on the keyboard; the connecter is so delicate that it might break. Only think is that you have to check if there is any foreign particle stuck in between the keys, or you can check cleaning the keyboard with a vacuum cleaner.
    If you find that issue still persists then you have to replace the complete keyboard unit.
    Hope this helps.

  • Trouble running hardware test on 07 iMac with noisy fan

    Hello
    I have an 07 iMac with a noisy fan- I've tried vacuuming out dust from the back but want to avoid taking it apart if possible...
    I read online I should run the hardware test, but since I am running Mavericks the Apple support advice is to run the original OS X install disc and restart (holding down D or Option+D)...
    Long story short I got a replacement disc from Apple (I'd lost the original) but the iMac ejects it when I restart following the process above... could it be my bluetooth keyboard? Hopefully not since I no longer have the original hardwired one... or does anyone have any other ideas for either how to get to the hardware test... or fix the fan (without a third party app just stopping it)
    Thanks!

    Try holding down the Option key to get the one time boot manager screen then select the AHT. Not sure as Apple moved it around on different install discs but it might be on the Applications discs and not the OS X discs.

    No problem, except with safari refresh, bu since 10.8.3 my fan are a bit noisy with the same usage ase before, usually : Mail, Calendar, Total Finder & a browser.
    Any idea how to correct it ?

    Try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

    Hi,
    Personally, I would say your best option is to return the notebook to the retailer you purchased it from and get it replaced - you shouldn't have to troubleshoot a brand new machine and this would seem to be a Hardware issue.

  • Wonderful .... but noisy iMac .... and decommissioning the HDD

    I've just bought my first Mac (27" iMac i7 3.4GHz 1 Tb Western Digital HDD, 256 Gb SSD, 8 Gb RAM, 2 Gb Video) after a PC lifetime and it's wonderful ..... but noisy .... surprisingly noisy for such an expensive supposedly high-end computer.
    The noise is coming from the HDD which I viewed as almost a freebie when speccing the BTO menu as the extra over cost versus a SSD only machine was relatively marginal. Temps and fan speed are all normal as reported by iStat so nothing is malfunctioning per se that would warrant a return under Applecare.
    So whilst the noise is irksome and dents confidence and brand image somewhat, I'm pragmatic rather than nuerotic about it and I'm thinking that I can add a Thunderbolt external HDD when the prices drop a little and switch off the internal HDD.
    Is anyone please able to confirm that it is possible to electronically rather than physically decommission the HDD so that it will sit silently within the iMac shell, never being used once I have an external TB HDD up and running.

    The correct process for resetting the SMC and PRAM is:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
    Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
