X11 broken by Snow Leopard

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard which broke X11. Previously I had installed something to get X11 working properly (possibly XQuartz but I'm not sure, all I remember is that it took days of fiddling to get X11 working under Leopard).
The error I am getting from X11.app is:
dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/X11/lib/libpixman-1.0.dylib
Referenced from: /Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11.bin
Reason: Incompatible library version: X11.bin requires version 15.0.0 or later, but libpixman-1.0.dylib provides version 13.0.0
I reinstalled X11 from the Snow Leopard CD, which recommended installing the latest combo update. I downloaded the latest combo update, rebooted, and repaired permissions, but I still get this error.
After reading yet other messages here I downloaded the latest XQuartz.app and this gives me this message:
dyld: Library not loaded: /opt/X11/lib/libpixman-1.0.dylib
Referenced from: /Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app/Contents/MacOS/X11.bin
Reason: Incompatible library version: X11.bin requires version 18.0.0 or later, but libpixman-1.0.dylib provides version 13.0.0
Can anyone help?

I also tried export DISPLAY=/Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app/ but that didn't seem to help.

OK I found a file /libpixman-1.0.dylib which, once I removed it, fixed the problem. Is it a bug that the two X11 applications are both confused about which libpixman-1.0.dylib they are actually loading? They both were reporting that they were loading their own version of the library, but it seems that both were loading /libpixman-1.0.dylib

Run through this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
It might have to do with the way Safari works on the Internet and the rash of attacks occuring
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/mar/27/cyber-attack-spamhaus-slows-dow n-internet
I also booted up Safai today which I hardly use and it was incredibly slow as well.
I don't know if it's Safari or me not using it for such a long time.
If the above fixes don't work, all I can suggest is to use Firefox or whatever until this attack thing blows over and see after that.

  • Scripts broken under Snow Leopard?

I wrote a script using AppleScript Editor. After several tests, running it manually from within AppleScript Editor, it seems to work just fine and does what I want it to. So, I saved a copy of the script as "run only". Supposedly, I should now be able to double-click the run-only script in order to run it without opening the editor. But, when I double-click the file, I get two pop-up windows. The first says: "Unable to read the file because the script is not editable (it was saved as run-only)", the second says "The document 'myscript' could not be opened."
Are scripts broken under Snow Leopard?

    sauljaffe wrote:
That's absurd. What purpose does the "run-only" option have then?
that's needed when people publish applications they created and don't want others to see source code. this is done to all commercial software to protect against software piracy. you can do it to your own home made programs too if you want using that button.
If you can't run it, and can't open it with the editor, then you have a file on your system you can only do one thing with: move it to the trash.
There must be a way to save scripts so they can be run without opening the editor first.
of course there is. you save the script as an application. then to run it you double-click on it.
If "run-only" isn't it, then what is it?

I'm running an intel iMac, so perhaps it's something to do with that.
I'm now using this very cumbersome approach...

    end try
    end repeat

    set C to newerPath
if "desktop" is not in newerPath then

    tell application "Finder"
    try

    end try
    end tell
    end if
    return C as text
    end FetchFileContainer
    on convertString(tString, ToFind, Tochange)
    set {oAStid, AppleScript's text item delimiters} to {AppleScript's text item delimiters, ToFind}
set tString to text items of tString
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to Tochange

  • Cursor focus in text fields in Safari broken after Snow Leopard upgrade

Hi, I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my Macbook. Since then, whenever I am typing in a text field in Safari (e.g. Gmail's compose message contents field), the cursor freezes. I cannot move the cursor with either arrow keys or the mouse. I cannot select text. The only way to move the cursor is to click on a different text field (e.g. the email subject field in Gmail) and then click back on the location I want in the first text field. But even after that, I cannot move the cursor within that field aside from typing characters -- I still have to click back and forth between different text fields.
I have not had this problem in Firefox.
This seems like a minor thing but it makes Gmail unusable in Safari, which basically means Safari is useless to me now. Still, I prefer to use Safari for general web browsing since it is much quicker, so I am hoping someone can recommend a fix (preferably not going back to Leopard, although that is an option via a SuperDuper restore).

    HI,
Other Safari users have experienced this issue but the issue resolved itself after uninstalling the Flash player plugin, then reinstalling, then repairing permissions.
Go here and follow the instructions. Uninstall Flash
Install the most recent version of Flash here.
    Now repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Rsync broken in Snow Leopard 10.6.4 when copying to network volumes

discussion elsewhere on the forums documents problems people have been having with rsync on recent versions of Snow Leopard. see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11437264&#11437264
    in a nutshell, any source which has hidden files (eg .DS_Store etc) causes rsync to fail spectacularly when trying to use this over a network drive. it creates thousands of files in the format;
    ..DS_Store.zzSlmv
    ..DS_Store.zzTlmv
    in the target directory.
It appears to be a problem specific to using rsync to copy files from a local volume to a mounted network share. eg:
    rsync -r /source/ /Volumes/networkdrive/destination
using rsync over ssh works perfectly:
    rsync -r /source/ user@remotecomputer:networkdrive/destination
any help? I see this using the Apple provided version (2.6.9) and other posters report it with the latest 3.0.7 version of rsync...

  • ARD Viewing broken after Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hi all!
Most of our Snow Leopard installs went fine, however, one Mac mini is still being troublesome. It's a Core Duo Mac mini connected via Ethernet. Viewing or Controlling the computer from ARD console gives a black screen. Console.app on the client computer reports that AppleVNCServer crashes (see attached log).
I've repaired permissions multiple times and reinstalled ARD client several times. Remote controlling via a simpler VNC client works when ARD is set to accept VNC connections on the client.
    +sudo lsof -i :5900+ produces the following:

Update: After having to re-explain the entire case because the last guy didn't write anything down, and after having to re-convince the 2nd level support guy that this is in fact a bug, I've got the case escalated to engineering, and they'll come back to me on wednesday next week (I can't, of course, speak directly to the engineer).
The problem presents itself with a fresh install of 10.6 and ARD Client 3.3.1 with a resolution of 1366x768. Symptoms are a black screen in the ARD console, with the text "Connecting…" flashing on the screen. The process AppleVNCServer crashes on the client at this time, see report over.
    I'll keep you all updated!

  • MathType integration broken after Snow Leopard Upgrade

MathType 6.0 no longer seems to work with Keynote after I upgraded to Snow Leopard. When I try to insert an equation from MathType it inserts the equation, but only as a HUGE image file that has to be resized. Worse, I can no longer edit equations in MathType once they have been inserted into Keynote. Even if I select and copy in Keynote and paste into MathType. Everything still works correctly on my machine that I haven't installed Snow Leopard on.
It's a big problem for me because my presentations use a lot of equations. Any ideas for a cure?

    Quit Keynote
    move the preferences file:
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Keynote. plist
    on the desktop
    restart Keynote.
Maybe you will be forced to re-link MathType.
Tell us if it restores a normal behavior.

  • Screen sharing on local network - broken on snow leopard

I will try to be clear:
problem is: cannot get a screen sharing window on mac mini when accessing from macbook pro on local network. Problem began after clean install on snow leopard all computers.
setup: 1 mac mini, two macbook pros (1 is 1st gen, 1 2nd gen), all connected through Airport Wireless N basestations.
filesharing works fine. all computers recognised.
when i connect to screen sharing, blue bar comes for a minute, then goes off, then on again, then after a couple more minutes just disappears. screen sharing does not give me an error message, just stops trying. please help, getting fairly desparate.
    best,
    Charles

This is not normal. Although I have no experience with screen sharing SL-to-SL, I have no problems connecting from my MBP running SL to several other machines running older systems.
What might be different between my setup and yours I'm not sure. But here are a few things:
    1) At home, I'm also using an 'n' AirPort Extreme base station, but I'm using 'g' mode, because my MBP is the only machine in the house capable of 'n' speeds. No problems with the PB G4 or iMac G5 running Leopard.
    2) At my wife's office, we're using a LinkSys router (not an 'n' router), and no problems accessing the screen of a headless Intel Mac Mini running Tiger.
    3) You mention base stations, emphasis on the "s". If you have multiple base stations, that could be the problem. Have you tried simplifying the network so there's only one base station in use?
    4) What settings are you using for Screen Sharing in System Preferences -> Sharing? Look both in the main window and in the window that pops up if you push the Computer Settings button.

  • Printer Sharing broken in Snow Leopard Server

I have a Mac Pro running Leopard Server 10.5.8 doing various things, as well as Printer Sharing. After recently attempting to upgrade it to Snow Leopard Server, printer sharing no longer works. Existing clients with the shared printers added can no longer print. I attempted resetting the printing system on the server then readded the printers, then did the same on a client. When adding the printers advertised through Bonjour, the printer model is not detected and it wants to use the generic postscript driver. When printing with this driver, the printer hangs and wants to ask what paper tray to feed from.
How can I get this working as it was in 10.5.8? I don't want to have to go around and reconfigure all 50 clients on my network, and if I do have to, adding it with Bonjour should do most of the work.

There are server user accounts and computer user accounts. System Preferences is for creating and managing computer user accounts. Server Preferences and Workgroup Manager are for creating and managing server user accounts. If you created the account in System Preferences, you won't be able to manage it with Server Preferences or Workgroup Manager.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.2 can't run 'X11.app' (with system log)

Hello everyone, English is not my mother tongue so may not be exactly correct, sorry about that.
    Background:
I have a MacBook White (13-inch, Mid 2009) that isn't unibody, and was running Leopard 10.5.
I am the only one that will use the Mac and my user account is as the 'admin'.
When I was using 10.5, I could open the 'X11.app'.
But few days ago, I did a clean installation of 10.6.2 Snow Leopard from the USD$29 disc.
After that I installed the iLife '09 (the gray disc bundled with the MacBook),
and I cloned the drive to my ext. FireWire HD immediately after the installation of SL and iLife'09 by using the CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner).
After that, of course, I was going to install the apps I need, and update the software.
    _But the problem appears:_
When I try to open the 'X11.app', the X11 icon begins jumping on the Dock, but nothing happens.
Jumping and jumping... finally, it doesn't jump any more, with just the X11 icon on the dock.
What's more, there is no white dot under the icon, which means the app isn't running at the moment.
I right-clicked the icon, it shows me 'application not responding'.
So, I open the *Activity Monitor*, and I can see there are two apps related to X11 are running:
    (1) X11
    (2) X11.bin
Please see below for the system log (around 1min. log, starting with the time when I open the X11)

    ==========
As I've said, I have a clone of 10.6.2 on my ext. FireWire HD.
So I've tried to boot the MacBook with the key 'option' pressed in order to boot from the clone.
What surprises me is that I can open the X11 without any problem.
And I've tried to open a new user account to test.
Even if the account isn't 'admin', the X11 can be opened too.
What this phenomenon tells me is that maybe there is an app(s) that I installed will make the X11 not open.
I've Googled the problem and tried the following methods:
    (1) Reinstall the X11 from the Snow Leopard disc.
    (2) Log in as the 'root' user, go to *System Preferences* to create a temporary account (e.g. named 'test') so that I can delete my current account (e.g. named 'User') (I copied the UUID and pasted it into TextEdit, saving it on my different partition of ext. FireWire HD.). Then I open a new account with the same username (named 'User') and paste the UUID I previously saved to the newly created account (named 'User'), and then redirect the home folder path to the original home folder (the account named 'User' that I deleted).
    (3) Create an account for testing (e.g. named 'test'), set it as admin. Then log in as the 'root' user, to use 'ditto' command in Terminal to copy my home folder to the account named 'test'. After that, I make the account for testing (account name 'test') have the permission to read and write the files by pressing 'command + I' the home folder, and then set the user 'test' having the permission to read and write and apply this to all the enclosed folder.
NONE of the above has worked.
So what can I do in order to make my X11.app work again?
    Thanks in advance!!

But you have it running in the other account. With X11 problems, this is as easy as it gets.
I hope this problem can be solved soon...
Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure you are going to have to use the Terminal.
I see, thanks for the info.! (I am new to the Mac since 2009 )
The only one that would cause any problem by being removed is ".Trash". You don't have any of the other files that Bob is talking about. It would be annoying for any heavy Terminal user to lose those dot files, but perfectly safe.
There is no need to even attempt to backup anything in /tmp.
    Thanks for the info.!
Try this. In System Preferences, select Sharing and enable "Remote Login". Login to that Standard user who can run X11 with no problem. Then, just as a test, run "ssh <mainuser>@localhost". Verify that you are in the home directory of the user with the X11 problems. Don't do anything yet. Just type 'exit' to logout.
Reboot your machine. Login as the Standard User. Run "ssh <mainuser>@localhost" again. This time, run the "rm .<somefile>" on all those dot files (except for .Trash and maybe .CFUserEncoding). This time they should all stay deleted. Follow Bob's advice too and do "rm Library/Preferences/org.x.X11.plist". Type "cd /tmp" and delete everything you can find in there. You can't do any damage there. Type "exit" to quit the ssh session.
Now logout of the standard user and log back in to your primary user and try it again.
I am now at the standard account called 'test' and browse this web page using Safari through Wi-Fi.
    4 things:
    .bash_history
    .DS_Store
    .fontconfig
    .Xauthority
    ==========
With the '.fontconfig', I can't delete it from the Terminal:
    +Michael-Leungs-MacBook:~ Michael$ rm .fontconfig+
    _+rm: .fontconfig: is a directory+_
(At this moment, I Googled the 'rm' command and found these web pages:
    http://ss64.com/osx/
    http://newsourcemedia.com/blog/basic-terminal-commands/
That's why I try the 'rmdir' and 'sudo rm'.
But NONE of these command helps)
    +Michael-Leungs-MacBook:~ Michael$ rmdir .fontconfig+
    _+rmdir: .fontconfig: Directory not empty+_
    +Michael-Leungs-MacBook:~ Michael$ sudo rm .fontconfig+
+WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss+

    +Michael-Leungs-MacBook:/ Michael$ sudo rm -rf /tmp+

  • Reinstall X11 on Snow Leopard

What is the best way to uninstall X11 from a system that has been upgraded to Snow Leopard?
Then I'm going to reinstall X11 from the Snow Leopard disc.
I'm motivated to do this because I'm seeing some flaky stuff from a unix application and I suspect that X11 may be the cause.

    Bill Scott wrote:
One problem I ran into is that a newer version of X11.app was released that never made it into SL. If you have software compiled against that, reinstalling SL X11 isn't going to fix it for you.
Good point about recompiling. The problem application is one that I compile, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my previous Leopard X11 was the culprit and compiling against the Snow Leopard X11 will fix things.
I too noticed that SL X11 is an older version of what what ultimately available on Leopard. Strange.
I'm keeping my eye on the xquartz wiki for an update for SL.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.2 takes a long time to run 'X11.app' (with system log)

Hello everyone, English is not my mother tongue so may not be exactly correct, sorry about that.
    Background:
I have a MacBook White (13-inch, Mid 2009) that isn't unibody, and was running Leopard 10.5.
I did a clean installation and now Snow Leopard 10.6.2, with iLife, iWork, and many many apps.
I am the only one who will use the Mac and my user account is as the 'admin'.
I previously had a problem concerning X11 too:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2343732
    *What I've done:*
    (1) rename my HD to 'Michaels_Home' under 'Get Info' from Finder (I can't rename in Disk Utility though)
    (2) press return (enter)
    (3) change my home folder path to the '/Volumes/Michaels_Home/Users/Michael' (http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/Framework.cfm?page=Tips/relocate3/relocate3.ht ml)
    (4) restart
    (5) log in and open X11
    (6) problem solved!!
    ==========
*BUT NOW* I have a problem after:
    (1) log in as the root user, and use command +ditto -V xyz xyz+ to copy my home folder from '/Volumes/Michaels_Home/Users/Michael' to '/Users>Michael'
    (2) change my home folder path to the '/Users/Michael' (http://eshop.macsales.com/Reviews/Framework.cfm?page=Tips/relocate3/relocate3.ht ml)
    (3) use the Mac OS X Snow Leopard USD$29 disc to boot my Mac up
    (4) delete the 'Michaels_Home' partition (I had 3 partitions: (1) Macintosh HD (2) Michaels_Home (3) Windows XP Professional)
    (5) resize the 'Macintosh HD' partition
    (6) boot from Macintosh HD
    (7) find that there's a problem about X11
    _The problem:_
it takes a *long time* for X11 to start.
So, I open the *Activity Monitor*, and I can see there are 3 apps related to X11 are running:
    (1) X11
    (2) X11.bin
    (3) xauth
*At the moment now, if you would wait for about 1.5 min., X11 will open.*
Please see below for the system log (from 'FREEZING' to 'WORKING')

So what actually causes this problem?
    Thanks in advance!

It turns out that there's something wrong about permissions.
    Here's the fix:
    (1) log in as the +root user+
    (2) type +chown -R Michael:staff ~Michael+
    (3) log out the +root user+
    (4) log in your account
    (5) done!
Hope this thread will help those who encounter the same problem as me!

  • X11 not starting after upgrade to Snow Leopard

Hello, sorry if this is trivial stuff for all of you, but I am really having trouble sorting this out; I'd be grateful if anyone can help. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.2), did the Combo update as suggested in www.apple.com, but I cannot get X11 to run since the upgrade (I did re-install X11 from the optional installations, btw). The symptoms are that when I try to run any X11 application (such as xmgrace, gnuplot or xfig), or even if I click directly on the X11 icon in the Utilities folder, the X11 icon keeps jumping in and out of the dock; I reproduce below what shows up in the console. Needless to say that I have read through it, but cannot make any sense of what is reported there. I can't believe I'm the only one having this problem, since all I have done is to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard following the standard procedure. Should I perhaps do a clean install?
    Thanks in advance.

Here is some info on how to replace it:

I believe the easiest way to accomplish this is to first repair your user account permissions
using the SL install DVD. This won't fix the account, but it will make sure the user data in the
account has the correct permissions before backing it up for transfer later.
Mac OS X v10.5 or later: While started from the Leopard Install DVD, a user's home directory permissions can be reset using the "Reset Password" utility.
I suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner or equivalent to backup and restore your account data.

  • Save for Web in Snow Leopard seems broken

Whenever I try to Save For Web in Illustrator CS4 under Snow Leopard, all I get is a black square.
Curious to see if anyone else has this problem. (I'm also curious--if this is indeed a problem witih Illustrator--to see if Adobe plans on fixing this problem before 2012.)

I notice that the same feature is also broken in Photoshop.
I'd be happy to find out that I've done something wrong...but I'm not sure at the moment what that would be.
