X11 environment variables on MacBook Pro
Hi
I have just got my new MacBook Pro and have installed Gimp to run using x11 that came on the apple installation disks however I can't seem to get the xterm to configure correctly.
GIMP is installed under /sw/bin but the default PATH for x11 does not include this location so I added PATH=$PATH:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin to a newly created .bash_profile. But x11 did not seem to use this file although terminal worked OK.
After doing a bit of research, I then created a .bashrc file with the PATH defined and changed the .bash_profile to source .bashrc with no other entries.
Again this worked OK for Terminal but now when I type 'echo $Path' in an x11 xterm the PATH displays two entries for /sw/bin & /sw/sbin. i.e.
$ echo $PATH
/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin
Any ideas why? and how can I correct it?
Macbook Pro 17 Mac OS X (10.4.9)
Sorry this was a bit brief; I think I was still asleep when I typed it.
The reasons are these:
1. Many fink programs require environment variables and other settings. When you source that init.sh file, it ensures everything is set up to work out of the box. (Among the things it does is to in turn source every relevant file in /sw/etc/profile.d -- take a look in it to see what, if anything, is in there). There is also some code to keep your path trimmed properly, so you don't get repeats pasted on.
2. Bash is unique in that either .bashrc or .bash_profile, but not both, get sourced. In a rooted X11 environment, everything works properly, but on OS X, where X11 is "rootless," it leads to unexpected behavior like what you saw. As long as you put everything into one file and then tell the other one to source its contents, you should be ok.
You can also run X11 stuff from Apple's terminal, provided you somewhere in a startup file have something to set the DISPLAY variable, usually to .0.
I've put more discussion of these things here

Running Classic Environment on new MacBook Pro
I need to use an old software program. It requires that I use the classic environment. Is there any way that I can run the classic environment on my new MacBook Pro running Snow Leapoard?
Hi, turtlepower -
Does this also apply to the new imac version 10.6.2.
Yes.
Classic is not supported by OSX 10.5 (Leopard) and later versions; and is not supported on any Intel-processor Mac.
Is there anything out there that will work?
The only way to use OS 9 on Intel machines or machines running OSX 10.5 and later is to use an emulator such as mohaas05 has suggested.
Whether running OS 9 in emulation will meet your needs is a different thing - some functions or programs will not work well, or at all. For example, programs that require direct access to the machine's hardware (such as many games do) will not do well in OS 9 in emulation.
Given that used machines capable of booting to OS 9 are quite inexpensive these days, getting one of them is often the best solution. -
Can I log in a windows server 2008 environment with a macbook pro
I have a macbook pro. Can I log into a domain of a win server 2008?
HansGenerally it is the browser service that populates network neighborhood. This technology is no longer used with newer OS like server 2008, windows 7/8.

External Monitor on Macbook Pro freezes after deleting old profiles
Environment:
15 inch MacBook Pro, Mid 2010, 2.4 GHz, 8GB, NVIDIA GeForce graphics
Yosemite 10.10.1
External Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 245T running in Extended Mode with the laptop
I have been using the above setup for several years with no issues. Yesterday I did a calibration of the external SyncMaster monitor with Datacolor Spyder3 as I have done many times in the past. The calibration was saved, but an error message flashed by before the file was saved. Checking with the ColorSync utility, the new saved colorspace appeared somewhat smaller than the last one.
I noticed that I had too many old profiles from previous calibrations still there, so I tried cleaning the directory up. I opened System Pref/Display/Color, clicked on an unwanted profile and delete the profile, and reset it to the profile that I wanted. Repeated this a few times and the SyncMaster appeared to be good.
Now I tried the same with the Macbook. Fine, deleted a few profiles but something now messed up the SyncMaster. It colors, including the dock, contorted to an ugly mess. Cursor changed to a spinning wheel, and I could not click or select anything either on the SyncMaster or the Mac. Rebooted, pulling the Syncmaster adapter out of the mac. Everything good, until I plug the Syncmaster back in, and I am back to the spinning wheel.
There must be some way to uninstall, re-install the Syncmaster?
How can I resolve this?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.Aha, all is good.
I went to Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays
and to home/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays
and deleted all SyncMaster.icc files. I did leave behind one SyncMaster file in the home/../Displays which had an old date and I new was ok.
Rebooted, plugged in SyncMaster, and a new icc file was automatically created in the /Library/../Displays folder.
My display works normally, now. -
Windows 7 install and/or environment freezing on new 13" MacBook Pro
Hello! Long post, trying to give as much detail as I can... thank you in advance for your help on this!!
I think I posted in the incorrect forum earlier -- reposting here where it's more relevant.
I have a frustrating issue I've been battling all weekend. I can't seem to figure it out.
I'm trying to set up dual boot (Boot Camp) on my new 13" MacBook Pro, installing Windows 7. I've tried x64 (preferable) and x86. This is the mid-April 2010 13" MacBook Pro. C2D 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB HD, nVidia 320M.
The problem I'm having is the machine is hard-locking. Sometimes it locks up during install (the 2nd phase, after it restarts and is "Completing Installation" (this step: http://spsexton.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/install-13.jpg). This makes me have to restart the installation completely, which is frustrating. Sometimes it locks up at the login screen. Sometimes it locks up once I'm logged in to Windows.
I have noticed that if the installation completes and I can get to the desktop, I can generally use it OK until I install the Boot Camp Drivers (3.1, from the 10.6.3 install DVD). I had a hunch and had also read that it may have to do with the nVidia drivers it installs, so I have tried uninstalling those prior to restart. It locks up anyway at restart (during login). Note that this generally is the case -- sometimes it locks up before I even get to the Boot Camp Drivers step. I sometimes can then get in to Safe Mode without it locking (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't), and I think I had some repeated errors in the Event Viewer that appeared erroneous (certainly not errors that should cause a hard lock) -- I can post these if needed when I get home from work this evening.
I was having consistent lockups during installation (at the "Completing Installation" step I mentioned above) when I'd let the Boot Camp Assistant set up the partition for me. I thought BCA might be doing something funny, so I set up the partition myself using Disk Utility then installed, and the install went in OK, however I still had it lock up after installing the Boot Camp Drivers.
Here's the steps I've been following:
1. Partition drive, either using Boot Camp Assistant or Disk Utility. Format to FAT if using Disk Utility.
2. Boot into Windows installer
3. Format drive to NTFS in installer
4. Install
5. Reboot
6. Complete install (often locks here as mentioned above)
7. If install completes, boot in to Windows
8. Change some system settings -- temp folders, workgroup name, pagefile size, turn off UAC
9. Reboot
10. Install Boot Camp Drivers from DVD (sometimes locks before I get here)
11. (have tried sometimes) Uninstall nVidia drivers installed by Boot Camp
12. Reboot
13. Consistent locks
14. Start over, both trying a new Partition creation (delete old, expand Mac partition, recreate new partition via BCA or DU), or using existing partition
Some other details:
1. This environment seems to work fine via Parallels. I only appear to have locking issues if I try to boot natively.
2. The Boot Camp Drivers installs a bunch of driver crud for devices the machine does not have. Could this be causing an issue? Drivers that Windows is attempting to load and failing, thus causing issues?
3. I'm mainly trying to install x64 due to the 4GB of RAM -- could this be an issue with the Boot Camp Drivers and Windows x64?
4. I don't think this is a motherboard issue as the machine is completely stable otherwise -- I'd think that if it was a hardware failure, especially with the motherboard, I'd see other issues elsewhere..
Any ideas??? I'm pulling my hair out on this one. The machine is brand new (just got it Tuesday last week, just started using it this last weekend). My last MacBook Pro (previous model 13" MBP) took Windows 7 without a single hitch and ran smooth as butter.
Help?i just got some solution for this... dunno whether it will work for u all... anyone who got the same problem... try to press power button right on welcome screen after u type ur username and password.... or if u didnt put a password, u can press the power button right on the welcome screen... and then it will automatically to the lock state... and then u login again... the windows will appear... i work it on windows 7 64 bit... if u can login for that 1st time, for next time, u dont need to press the power button anymore... for me it works... XD
cheers...
gud luck for u all... =)

On new Macbook Pro I7, 4GB, X11 takes 1 minute and 45 seconds to load.
Any ideas as to why X11 takes so long to load on a new Macbook Pro? On my last Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, X11 launched in 15 seconds or less. Is there another Lion-specific version of X11 which did not come with the Xcode toolkit?
I have X11 version 2.6.3 that installed in the Utilities folder. I just checked the checkbox for X11 when I installed Mac OS X (now 10.7.2). Boot up in 10 seconds on a Mac Pro (tower).

X11 on macbook pro does not open an xterm
I recently installed X11 on my new core 2 duo macbook pro from the DVD that came with it. When I start it and select Applications -> Terminal, nothing happens. I downloaded the X11 1.1.2 update from support.apple.com and this does not seem to fix it either.
Anyone else see this or have any ideas?Hi Tim. I'm aware of the distinction between Terminal and X11. I compiled gobby using MacPorts and realized I hadn't installed X11 yet. It turns out MacPorts installed XFree86 due to some dependency, my guess is there's a conflict between that and X11.
I haven't had time to dig further into the old DarwinPorts mailing list archives, I imagine the answer is in there. Thanks for your help. -
How can I have the same environment on two macs on is a macbook pro and the other a Mac mini
How can I have the same environment on two macs on is a macbook pro and the other a Mac mini ?
Forget trying to use iCloud for this - it won't do what you want. iCloud syncs certain data like contacts and events, but it doesn't sync "environments" on computers.

I have a early 2008 Macbook Pro, need to up grade the hard drive so that I can add a windows environment what is the largest drive that I can put in this computer? Is the storage size the constraint or the physical size of the drive? Or a combination?
The largest capacity HDD that you can install is the HGST 1.5 TB HDD:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/HGST/0J28001/
Any 2.5" 9.5mm thick SATA HDD will fit and operate in your MBP, regardless of capacity.
Ciao.

I bought my MacBook Pro in 2010. This is the first Mac I have owned and recently it is having some difficulty loading we pages, often timing out. This Mac environment is entirely different for me and I am not sure where to begin troubleshooting and/ or clean-up. I have moderate computer skills and try not to download or access questionable material, however recently I visited the Ap Store and purchased a couple of different aps to use in record keeping and for making a flyer. I am not even sure how to remove these programs to see if it helps.
Any tips or tricks are appreciated.
Thank you!Time to see about the PRAM battery.
By the way iOS and OS X are different systems.
iOS is the operating system for iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch.
Mac OS X is the operating system for Mac labelled computers. -
Hi, has anyone have the problem that you haven't done anything with you macbook pro but its operating system is running in dos environment?
Do you have Windows installed?
No? Then it can't be running in DOS. (Disk Operating System)
Mac's run BSD Unix, not DOS. however single user mode looks like DOS.
If you booted the Mac holding the command and s keys, that's single user mode, which is the root level command line.
type exit or reboot or restart (one of those should work) and press enter, then reboot normally or load OS X.
If it's always entering this enviroment, then something is set on it to do that.
It's possible to set the machine to display this mode upon boot, but once OS X is loaded it should disappear. -
CLASSPATH environment variable - Pro/cons?
I was told that its not a good idea to define CLASSPATH as a system environment variable, but was never told why. Is it correct that it should be avoided to define CLASSPATH as a system variable?
Another thing when should a variable be defined as a system variable or an user variable?fedevaps wrote:
I was told that its not a good idea to define CLASSPATH as a system environment variable, but was never told why. Is it correct that it should be avoided to define CLASSPATH as a system variable?For one thing, it means you have no control over classpaths. Say you write two apps, and they each use a different version of the same library. If you're using the one global classpath for both of them, you're stuffed. How do you allow them both to use the correct version? Then you come to deploy one of them on someone else's machine, and, say, send them a CD with it on."Right, what jars does it use again? I dunno. It always just worked, cos I've got all my dependencies in one place, and the VM picks up the lot. Goddammit. I'll have to put all of them on his machine, too .AND set up his classpath. What? There are 500 machines to roll out to? And some of them don't even +have+ that folder? Goddammit! ". See the problem? If you explicitly dictate a classpath when starting up the JVM, it can be wherever you want - typically a lib folder within that specific app - and have exactly what you need on it. Much more flexible and easier to control
Another thing when should a variable be defined as a system variable or an user variable?I hope you're just asking cos you're already here, and not because you think this is related to Java. Cos it isn't. System variables are available to, well, all the users of the machine, including any local accounts that services might be running under. A user variable is specific to the user it's defined for, and not visible to any others. When you use which depends very much on what the variable is for -
Environment variables from ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist not read?
Hello,
I repost this from "Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard > Account and Login" since it was advised to me overthere. Sorry if your already read this one before.
I have a problem defining environment variables that should be visible to all my user processes, not only Terminal. According to the Apple documentation, I need to create a file ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist and define my variables in there.
Below you can see the exact paths and file name, together with the contents of the plist file:
<pre>
/Users/ringods/.MacOSX
AtrisoBook:.MacOSX ringods$ ls -l
total 8
-rw-r--r--@ 1 ringods staff 313 Sep 29 15:35 environment.plist
AtrisoBook:.MacOSX ringods$ cat environment.plist
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>ANT_HOME</key>
<string>/opt/local/share/java/apache-ant</string>
</dict>
</plist>
</pre>
I then tried a logout/login sequence, but no ANT_HOME environment variable was defined. Even after completely rebooting, the environment variable was still not defined. I checked in a Terminal window using any of the following 3 commands:
<pre>
env
export
set
</pre>
This is on a MacBook Pro running 10.5.5. Am I missing something here? Does anyone know how to resolve this?
RingoI'm currently experiencing the same issue.
I find however, if I take out the underscore from the name it works. At least the times I've tried.
There is a post about using launchd.conf for configuring environment variables, but I couldn't get that to work either. -
Flash CS5 unable to play .FLV files on Macbook Pro
I have a colleague who is trying to put together a Flash package for me on her macbook pro. It needs to play an flv file. She is unable to play flv files on her computer either in Flash or using the Adobe Media Player. I have no problem playing the same files on my macbook pro, we're both running the latest OS and have version 1.8 of Adobe Media Player.
She went to the Adobe site to download the latest version of Adobe Media Player, hoping that might include whatever component is missing on her system. Because of Adobe's decision not to distribute AMP that didn't help. She has Flash Professional CS5 11.0.2 on her system. When she imports an flv video into a Flash project and tries to play it she gets an error message saying it can't stream the video. Note that the video is on her hard drive, it is NOT on the internet so no streaming should be required.
The actual error message is: "the video player is in the connection error state. It enters this state when a video stream attempted to load but was unsuccessful. There are two possible reasons for the error: no connection to the server or the stream was not found."
Since it's a file on her hard drive, and she has loaded the file into the Adobe development environment successfully, the one thing we know for certain is that neither of these reasons is correct. Something is obviously missing on her system, what is it and what can we do to fix it?I'm getting error too (Error #2044: Unhandled NetStatusEvent:. level=error, code=NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound). I'm getting this with CS5. This file was previously made in CS4 and never got this error.
Everything (fla and flv too) is on external hard disk.
As this work requires to be exported to mov, I've found out that everything needs to be on the mac (don't know for pc), like on desktop.
So, let me wrap up disadvantages I got with Flash CS5:
- TextField.embedFont makes the font disappear in CS5, so I can't use it, so I can't "play" with text in a comfortable way (in CS4, with embedFont = true, I was able to rotate and stuff). Now I have to make a bitmap out of it. It means 3 lines of code and a new variable, instead of just an easy one.
- I have to rebuild my entire source path structure for AS classes, as my old one (that took me years of effort to be reasonable and used to work just fine in CS4).
- I have to move stuff from my hard drive to the desktop, to make flv be played and to make a mov out of my animation.
CS5 is making my job harder and making me lose a lot of time to find out errors that have no good reason to exist (it was not error. just "place CS5 doesn't like").

Start and End Time in Record Working Time- Weekly View
HI, In record working time we have 2 views, daily and weekly. In daily view, we have start time and end time, which we do not have in weekly view. Can these 2 fields be incorporated in Weekly View?
