X11 forwarding very slow
I'm trying to display images remotely (if there are any IRAF users out there, I'm using IRAF to display images in DS9) by X11 forwarding. If I use any other Linux system, the display is fine, but when I use X11 forwarding in OS X, the images load so slowly. My connection isn't the problem, so I'm wondering if there's something in OS X?
What kind of network(s) are you dealing with astronoman?
Give us a detailed description.
Also, do you use Macs only or are there other *nix machines on your network as well?
Where does the XSrever run from (networked or from each machine)?
X11 forwarding requires decent bandwidth + decent cpu/xserver resources

I'm noticing forwarding with the Jam takes forever. It does not matter how long or hard you hold the button, it will only speed up for a few seconds, stop and speed up again. This is a real pain if you listen to long audio files or books spanning hours. I see no option to change the speed so I guess it is this way for everyone. Please fix this is firmware revision.
That's normal.
FF works in slow: first a x2 acceleration, then it go as fast as the RW button goes (but forwards). It's because most people only FF a little, but never backtrack a little. -
I am frustrated with the new update and the ICloud. Any program i open, or website I am in, closes suddenly, an returns to the Home page. Also the keyboard is very slow. None of this existed until I did the two updates. Can anyone help?

Does anyone know anything about onsite specifics?
I'm wondering where the onsite warranty can be in effect. Like, can it be used in ANY city in the US? Can it be used only in metrololitan areas? What is a metro area in Lenovo's eyes?
Does anyone know where I can get better and accurate info on the onsite warranty? Like a coverage map would be very helpful. Because why should I spend the money on it, if I can't access it?
Looking forward to more info...thanks.
There is no coverage map as such.
I live in what is considered a rural area and had techs driving 60-70 miles one way to get to me, never an issue.
Obviously, YMMV.
In my not-so-modest experience, both onsite and accidental damage upgrades are worth every penny if one intends to keep their ThinkPads for an extended period of time.
Good luck.

Mail, Server Admin, MySQL running very, very slow
Hi all,
I have this Leopard Server on a Mac Mini and I experience some big bottlenecks on mail services (especially webmail), Server Admin connections (both local and remote), and also connections with mySQL clients (remote). Local MySQL is working fine. It is not the same for mail and Server Admin. They are very slow also for local connections. Any idea? Hint: I'm using a USB-ethernet adapter (from Apple) for my public IP's (I have 2 of them) and I use built-in ethernet for local network. I've switched them, I tried only with the built-in ethernet... no change. Please help... my enthusiasm about this server solution is getting lower and lower... Thank you very muchpterobyte wrote:
Have a look at system.log and mailaccess.log for clues to begin with.
Server Admin is usually slow (locally and remotely) when the DNS (forward and reverse) setup is not correct.
Since mySQL seems to have only problems when used remotely, I'd look at bandwidth, routers and switches involved.
Is mail only slow when used via webmail or via any IMAP client?
You're a genius as usually
It seems that I removed my reverse zone accidentally... I didn't even think to look at DNS setting before you told me... Thank you very much -
Hello everyone! Thank you all in advance for any type of help or advice, I appreciate it a lot.
I am using:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)
Running OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.2
Processor 2,3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB
Macintosh HD has 294,08 GB free (out of 499,25 GB)
I am a student, using my MacBook constantly during the day. Applications that I use daily - Safari, Word, Outlook and Finder are always on; a lot of the time I am also using Photoshop CS6, Skype.
Ever since the update to OS X Yosemite my MacBook did slow down noticeably. I left this issue unattended as I was using uni computer at the time. Recently I returned to the actual studies and design work on my MacBook. I couldn't cope with how slow it was, ended up in forums looking for the solution. I tried a couple of things already (was restarting/shutting down computer in-between these tasks):
1. Disabled FileVault (it was on for moths, I had no idea of what it is), completed the decryption process (it took around 10 hours).
2. After that I ran EtreCheck, that found a couple of actual and potential issues, I more or less sort it out, will attach the new report in the end of the post.
3. Tried to disable Spotlight to affect mds, not sure it worked.
4. Moved to Trash apps I wasn't using, properly uninstalled only a couple of them. Emptied trash.
5. Erased Safari history that emptied about 500MB of RAM, but then it went back to almost 3.98GB full out of 4GB.
At the moment I only have Safari on and kernel_task takes 570MB of memory, used RAM is 3,88GB out of 4GB.
Fan is constantly on, MacBook is very slow. If I understand correctly RAM is the main issue, unfortunately being a student I am not able to buy and install more memory. I also understand that Photoshop takes a lot of RAM memory, what can I do about it? Photoshop is a crucial app for me.
Is there a way to free some of the RAM memory and make my Macbook faster? Would a clean Yosemite install help? (Can Yosemite at all perform properly on a MacBook with only 4GB memory? What will help it run faster?)
Here's my EtreCheck report:

AnnaLet Spotlight finish indexing your HDD. Stopping it is pointless.
Regarding the fans, it is always running when you turn on the MBP. It is a question of how fast. If there are light loads on the CPU, the fans should be near silent. If otherwise, try a SMC reset.
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
If that does not slow the speed at very light loads then there are other reasons that need to be explored.
If you cannot instal;l additional RAM (your MBP will accept up to 16GB) then you will have to accept slower performance. Yosemite is a RAM glutton. The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are Owc and Crucial.
Time Machine or any other backup is only necessary if the data you have on your MBP is important. Ask yourself this question: What will be the degree of inconvenience should the internal HDD fail? All hard drives eventually fail.

MacBook suddenly became very slow. Have tried other posters' suggestions.
Hi there,
My MacBook recently, rather unexpectedly, started running very slow. There is no particular application that is running slowly, but rather, the system as a whole. I think the problem began while I was browsing the internet and doing nothing suspicious in particular. I have been doing a bit of reading on these threads, but have been unable to solve my problem so far. I have presented below what I have tried so far.
Very many thanks for your help,
Aaron
1) Reset my System Management Controller.
2) Repaired my Disk using Disk Utility in Recovery mode.
3) Backed up my computer.
4) Using instructions outlined by user ‘Linc Davis’ in thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5437363?tstart=0. I will post the results as a comment below this question.(apologies for the long log list… I included about 50 lines as suggested)

CS4 apps are VERY slow to open Windows file browser with File Open or File Save As commands
We are running CS4 on Windows 7 with all available updates installed. Photoshop and the other CS4 applications are VERY slow to open a Windows file browsing window to select files when File Open or File Save As menu options are run -- it can take as long as a minute or two for the window to open. Once the window opens and a file is selected, then opening or saving the file is very quick. The location of the default directory, whether it is on a local drive or a network drive, makes no difference. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

The link that I posted earlier is off. Read this one
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2501584. I discovered in my network that the MS Office File Validation Patch made excel crawl when opening over the network though nothing else changed. At the time I was opening Excel on Office 2003.
You can manually turn this off by editing the registry and tunring it off. Going forward I skipped the patch to keep my sanity. Not sure if this is the same as your issue, but the support article will go into detail how to either have Fix it
clear the issue or change the proper registry keys.
Hope this helps -
Very slow (almost none) 3D Acceleration with current Nvidia driver
Hi,
I'm having a problem on my Vostro 1400 with Nvidia M8400GS graphics card. The thing is that I don't have 3D acceleration to run compiz or 3D games (Urban Terror). Well, I can run GLXgears and start up Urban Terror, but the performance in UT is very slow (unplayable) even in the main menu - the sound is laggin etc). Even if I run Xcompmgr, the performance is very bad. I have had this issue almost a year now under Arch and I haven't found any solution to this problem.
Currently I'm running Nvidia driver from the extra repo version 169.12-4.
I also have enabled nvidia-xconfig --composite option to my xorg.conf file.
Here is my xorg.conf file:

You might wanna try tuning your xorg setup a bit as is described on the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … Fxorg.conf , and just under the section on xorg there is a bit of more info on the nvidia or ati specific stuff.
Is there a reason you are not specifying the default depth portion?
eg:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
Or the modes portion?
eg:
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
There's also more detailed info on the wiki about xorg http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg and nividia http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA
Although, some of those nvidia specific options can lower your fps, I tried some of them and then removed them as they killed my opengl performance in 3d games, only "Option" I added and kept was the NoLogo one.
Hope something there helps, always has for me

Mini HP laptop running on Windows 7 - runs very slow
I have a mini HP Laptop. It runs VERY slow and when I am typing, the buffer is WAY behind me. Also, when trying to view videos online - eg. You Tube, everything is in slow motion or freezes. Same with Skype and Facebook. Slower than the old dial up internet!!!!
The operating system is Windows 7 which came loaded with the laptop.Hello Seachange51,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I understand that your notebook is functioning very slowly, and I would be happy to guide you towards a resolution! To begin, I will need to ask you a few questions:
What is the Product and Model Number of your desktop computer?
Has your computer completed all of its important Windows Updates?
Have you updated your HP drivers using the HP Support Assistant?
Is this an on-going, or recent issue?
In the meantime, I recommend following this document on Improving System Performance without Adding Memory (Windows 7). This should help improve the speed and efficiency of your notebook.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!

JSPM window does not appear with X11 forwarding
Hello guys,
I am using the putty with ssh-2 and X11 forwarding enabled, but the window from the JSPM does't appear or is damaged.
Is it not possible to use the JSPM with X11 forwarding? Do you have any other suggestions, like real X?
Thanks
Stefan GutscheI tried to access the Mixer from both the drop down menu below the right side panel and top of the interface on 8.0. Then I loaded 9.0. Same test same result first time around.
Then I read your note and tried both places again and the top of the interface worked in 9.0! Now both locations work in both versions. Weird.
Thanks very much for the response. -
WOW is very slow when using the linksys router
If I connect directly into my cable modem I and run and play WOW with no problem, if I connect back the wireless router the proformance is very slow and can't see the characters sometimes. Is there a setting to turn off or lower the filters?
I have the 54GSYou may need to forward ports in order to make it work properly. This http://portforward.com/cportsnotes/battlenet/wow.htm would be a help.

Hi All,
Our client is running SBO 2007A and has Fixed Assets installed.
I can connect remotely to the server and the speed is absolutely fine for Fixed Assets. This is using the administrator network logon and the SBO manager logon.
When the customer logs on locally on the server (using the administrator and manager logons for the test) the speed for Fixed Assets is very slow.
When the customer logs on to their local pc and their own network and SBO logons the speed is also very slow for Fixed Assets.
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled Fixed Assets, deleting AddOnsLocalRegistration.sbo at the same time.
Can anybody offer any suggestions why a remote connection would be fine while a local connection is so slow?
Thanks and regards,
JulieHi.
Thanks for the links, but I don't feel like I'm any further forward on this one.
I've already reinstalled Fixed Assets but still have the problem. The Event Viewer doesn't seem to be reporting anything relating to FA.
Why would the speed be okay when I am remotely connected, but terrible when the users connect directly to the server (or from their own pc)?
Thanks,
Julie -
Upgrading to iTunes 9 -- /VERY/ slow now..
So when I "updated" to iTunes 9.0, all of a sudden, it's running excruciatingly slowly for me. When I first installed 9.0, it took about 8 hours to "update my library". Any time that I click on a song to play it, there's a good 10-second beachballing before it plays. Switching to a different song causes the same issue. I didn't have that problem at all in iTunes 8. Always ran smooth as silk.
I rolled back to the latest version of iTunes 8. When iTunes 9.01 was released, I once again "updated" iTunes. Same exact issue.
Currently, I have my iTunes library file stored on my local HDD and my music/videos/etc stored in a shared folder on a NAS. Apparently, other people have had issues with music stored on external drives. I'd done a search and the only real "solution" that I could find was to delete the iTunes preference file. I tried that and it worked.. until I added more music to the library. After more music was added, it was back to the same VERY slow behavior as before.
Is there a more permanent solution to this and I am just not finding it? Is this a known issue that Apple is working on? Going to roll back to iTunes 8 once again.
Thanks in advance for anyone's help.Hi there,
I downgraded to iTunes 8.2 as well and haven't looked back (forward). I saw iTunes 9.0.1 come out but thought I'd wait to hear if it had sorted out any of the problems. But sounds like it hasn't.
iTunes 8.2 was the sweet spot I think. Not only does 9 not work well, but it looks and feels awful too. It's such a shame they've messed up what was a great piece of software. I really hope they address all these issues, but I doubt it. RIP iTunes! -
My MacBook Pro has become very slow to run in the last few months, mostly since Yosemite installed. My system boots up, then needs a log-in. After log-in it takes about 20 minutes for the desktop to completely display. The dock shows up, as does the desktop background, but the icons and the menu across the top of the screen take the longest to show up.
Apple Mail is also extremely slow to load up, as is iPhoto. Mail is worst, taking about 20 minutes to show up with messages.
I have run disk utility several times both in the normal mode and also using Command + R and ran it from there. No problems found. A few items needed repair in Command + R, otherwise, no issues. I ran both the Permissions sets and also the Repair disk.
I have several gigabytes of mail as well as iCloud files stored on my account. Could this be part of the problem? Also, around 150 GB of photos in the iPhoto library.
Advice on what to check and how to accomplish this would be very much appreciated. Waiting for a good 20 minutes to initially use my MBP (2011) is becoming a real nuisance. (Then several more minutes to use Apple Mail which does not start automatically, neither does iPhoto).
Thank you! Thanks for your reply. It is very difficult to pick a portion of the log, but here is a section from late in the boot process which was begun at 4:33. It takes 20 minutes to come up to full screen with dock, icons, etc. following a log-in. I saved the file in a Word document in case you need more information.
Looking at the log I see references to apps which have been removed from the system. How do I completely all references to these?
