X11 not starting on 10.6.8

X11 does not start (icon just bounces in the dock when directly clicked and then disappears). It sems that I have an old X11 version (1.0 according to the info panel).

On another MBP with OS 10.6.8, X11 with version 2.3.6 according to the info panel runs without problems.
Is it possible that installing XCode from the install disk after the 10.6.8 update did overwrite the updated X11?
How can I update now X11? Could one run again the 10.6.8 combo update? Any help is appreciated!
Thomas

Thank you for your response! Here is the output of the commands you suggested:
[nes017-mbp] ~ > which startx
/usr/X11/bin/startx
[nes017-mbp] ~ > ls /Applications/Utilities/X*.app
Contents
[nes017-mbp] ~ > ls /Library/LaunchDaemons/*startx*.plist
ls: /Library/LaunchDaemons/*startx*.plist: No such file or directory
I am not really familiar with X11 stuff, so I don't know whether this output is as it should be.
Meanwhile, I checked the X11 version not just with the info panel, but also with the system profiler (>Software>Applications). Here are the listings of the X11 version on my MBP:
- Info panel: Version 1.0 from 25.04.2011 15:38
- System Profiler:
X11:
  Version: 2.3.6
  Zuletzt geändert: 25.04.11 15:38
  Art: PowerPC
  64-Bit (Intel): Nein
  Informationen: org.x.X11
  Ort: /Applications/Utilities/X11.app
Astonishingly, in System Profiler another version number is indicated than in the Info panel.
For the other MBP with 10.6.8, where X11 is running (and XCode has not been installed), the following is listed (incl About X11 when running X11):
- Info panel: Version 2.3.6 from 21.06.2011 11:13
- System Profiler:
X11:
  Version: 2.3.6
  Zuletzt geändert: 21.06.11 11:13
  64-Bit (Intel): Nein
  Informationen: org.x.X11
  Ort: /Applications/Utilities/X11.app
- About X11: XQuartz 2.3.6 (xorg-server 1.4.2-apple56)
The output on this MBP for the commands you suggested in your reply is identical to the output given above for the MBP where X11 is not running.
I came also across this apple support page,
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1963
where it's stated that migration of programs, e.g., X11, from a PowerPC-based Mac could cause problems on Intel machines. So I deleted my X11 app (which obviously is a PowerPC version) as suggested there and re-installed X11 from the Install Disc. However, the re-installed version was exactly the same as I had before, i.e. the one dated from 25.04.2011, and did again not start.
Based on the info on this support page, I finally just copied the X11 app from the other MBP (dated from 21.06.11) to my MBP - and now this X11 opens without problem, when double-clicked directly or also when a window is required from IDL, for instance.
I am not sure, though, whether this direct copying of the X11 app is a good solution, or whether later some problems may pop up, because no 'full' installation of this version has been made.
Do you have any comments on this?
Thank you for your help

  • X11 not starting after upgrade to Snow Leopard

Hello, sorry if this is trivial stuff for all of you, but I am really having trouble sorting this out; I'd be grateful if anyone can help. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.2), did the Combo update as suggested in www.apple.com, but I cannot get X11 to run since the upgrade (I did re-install X11 from the optional installations, btw). The symptoms are that when I try to run any X11 application (such as xmgrace, gnuplot or xfig), or even if I click directly on the X11 icon in the Utilities folder, the X11 icon keeps jumping in and out of the dock; I reproduce below what shows up in the console. Needless to say that I have read through it, but cannot make any sense of what is reported there. I can't believe I'm the only one having this problem, since all I have done is to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard following the standard procedure. Should I perhaps do a clean install?
    Thanks in advance.

A zero size is not unusual, especially if you cannot set any preferences because you cannot get
    x11 to start.
Your user account may very well be hosed.
Here is some info on how to replace it:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10730965
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507
I believe the easiest way to accomplish this is to first repair your user account permissions
using the SL install DVD. This won't fix the account, but it will make sure the user data in the
account has the correct permissions before backing it up for transfer later.
Mac OS X v10.5 or later: While started from the Leopard Install DVD, a user's home directory permissions can be reset using the "Reset Password" utility.
I suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner or equivalent to backup and restore your account data.

  • X11 not starting correctly.

Hi all! After putting arch on my netbook and my desktop, I've now decided to put it on my media centre pc too!
When I try to start X i get no display (no signal). The console shows me the following issues. I'm not sure if these are what are preventing me from starting x, or if its a seperate issue.

Hi guys. I tried MadCat's advise of the vesa driver, and it works! I can now run gnome and everything.. kb and mouse work too. However I would really like to run the nvidia driver. Not sure why it's not working. =[
Hal is indeed running (which i understand invokes dbus if it cant find it?) If i try to start dbus manually, and then hal, i cannot start hal - it fails. Starting only Hal works fine.

  • X11 not starting like it should

    Hello all,
I have a situation where I run 2 admin accounts on a single machine ( for arguments sake Acct 1 and Acct 2) I do the majority of my work on the second one.
I have the latest X11 and the latest version of GIMP but for some reason it will only open on the 1st user account, I try to open it on the second and X11 just hangs, keeps jumping up and down doing little of any substance on the dock and GIMP wont start, but as mentioned previously it opens fine on the first user account. How do I work around this?
Interestingly, before anyone gets back to me I dont know if it is worth noting but I did not have X11 installed by default. I had to go back and drag it off my install DVD's and in the past I had an issue similar to this but when installing Vuze.
    Any help would b appreciated

    Hi All,
while assigning value to a RegEx in constructor itself, we can either specify pattern (for which we need not  escape already escaped character)
    like
    var regexp:RegExp = new RegExp(/^\S.*\S$|^\S(?!.)/s)
or we can specify a string (for which we need to escape already escaped characters)
    like
    var regexp:RegExp = new RegExp("^\\S.*\\S$|^\S(?!.)","s")

  • X11 not starting after upgrading to 10.5.4 using the combo update

Because of a bug in Package Maker included with XCode 3.1 I ended up breaking my complete OS. After re-installing Leopard and using the Combo Update to 10.5.4 I am not able to run X11. I was able to use it prior to re-installing, but then I got the upgraded incremental via the online update.
It reports this on the console (a lot)
/usr/X11/libexec/x11-exec: Unable to find application for org.x.X11
It seems that this has already been reported to Apple, who acknowledged it as a bug. Is there any new from Apple on if / when / how this issue can be resolved other then by installing a separate application ? Will installing the Xquartz package allow me to install the fix when it becomes available ?

Search these forums for X11. There's been some recent traffic on X11.

  • X11 and x11 apps not starting up

I've seen this question asked once before but didn't understand how to actually fix the problem from what I saw, so here it goes:
I installed X11 as an optional install from the DVD as you are supposed to do for system 10.4.3 but when I try starting up Gimp or Inkscape, X11 only starts up for a second before shutting down again. Here is the message that I see when I look at the console log:
    XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
    [DRI] screen 0 installation complete
    Screen 0 added: 1280x960 @ (0,0)
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
    /Users/"MYUSERID"/.xinitrc: /Users/"MYUSERID"/.xinitrc: is a directory
    Quitting XDarwin...
What exactly am I supposed to do to get x11 working? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I have 3 computers that I have recently updated to 10.4.4 all of them get the same error as described in the original post, but I do not have the ~/.xinitrc file at all...
I have even did a clean install of the OS on one of my computers and with a fresh install I get:
    XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
    [DRI] screen 0 installation complete
    Screen 0 added: 1024x768 @ (0,0)
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
X11 itself runs, small apps such as xeyes, xman, xlogo run, but I cannot run Eiffel 5.6 IDE. as I then get the error:
bash: no job control in this shell
when running the launch script for the X11 app.
I have seen these errors mentioned in various post regarding GIMP I have not seen a definitive answer, some are fixed by the answer in this post, others (including mine) are not.
On my freshly installed 10.4.4 I also removed the X11 Receipt and installed the X11User.pkg from the 10.4.3 installer DVD and still had error. I did not, however, remove the X11 software of components. (might try that next)
Also, this might be useful, I sometimes get this error when quitting the X11:
xterm: fatal IO error 32 (Broken pipe) or KillClient on X server ".0"^M
Note: I had been using the X11 with Eiffel 5.6 Studio developer package with 10.4.3. Not sure when things stopped working as I have not used it since late November. Not sure if things stopped working after a Security Update, or the OS Update... any futher insights into this would be appreciated.

  • X11 does not start on 10.5.5

    Hi,
I have installed X11 from the original supplement disc. When I dblclick on X11 symbol it starts something and then the docking bar starts to flash showing the X11 icon and then removing it again.
However no X-Windows screen is to see neither an X-Term or something?
What do I need to configure here?

The original X11 provided with Leopard is flawed.
After installing it do the following
    Go to http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki
Download X11.pkg version 2.3.3.2 (near the top of the pages) and the localization updates.
Install en then you should have a properly working X11.
You do not need to start X11 before starting an X11 application.
In particular you should not set the DISPLAY environment variable yourself.

  • [NOT SOLVED] Gnome will not start

I'm editing this original message by way of summing up so that anyone coming here with a similar problem will know what to expect if they read further:
I believe the reason Gnome would not start on the machine in question was that it made too many demands on the available hardware (see desm0te's comments below).
For this reason I decided to switch to LXDE as Desktop Environment which works well on the restricted hardware. I did not investigate the Gnome related problem any further.
    The original message follows:
After a successful installation of the basic command-line Arch according to the Beginner's Guide, I went on to install Gnome according to instructions in the Wiki.
I Did not want Gnome to start automatically but only when I type in the command startx.
This it does, but all I get is the nice blue "curtain" background - no black bar at top of screen with Actions, date , name etc...
    and no cursor.
One funny thing was - this afternoon while I was concentrating on another machine - the black bar suddenly appeared (apparently for no reason) showing the date and my name but with the X cursor
from the X11 environment. However as soon as I moved this cursor to the bar and clicked, both dursor and bar disappeared never to return .
I decided to redirect the stderr of startx to a file in the hope that it would give a clue as to what was wrong.

    desm0tes:
To take your points one by one:
    1. I am now quite happy with LXDE too. The problems I mentioned last night seem to have gone (???!!!) and I can just start LXDE from my user account. Maybe later, I'll realize what I was doing wrong or rather what I did to make it work... . Now I just type:
    startx
    having put:
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde
    in .xinitrc.
    2. Thanks for the tip about yaourt. I shall try that sooner or later.
    3. Well as I said - I don't understand what I was doing wrong -  which makes me feel a bit stupid and is rather annoying but looking on the bright side it's fine to be able to start-up, have a legible screen and logout successfully - which I couln't do before. I now have to figure out how to expand the contents of LXDE a bit but that's the fun of it!
LXDE starts up nicely with minimal possibilties but I can change look & feel and customize the panel settings.
    "Menu" contains:
        Accessories:
            File Manager
            Image Viewer
            LXTerminal
            Leafpad
            Xarchiver
        Internet:
            Avahi SSH Server Browser
            Avahi VNC Server Browser
        Office:
            ePDFViewer
        System Tools:
            Avahi Zerconf Browser
            Task Manager
        Preferences:
            Customize Look and Feel
            Monitor Settings
            OPenbox Configuration Maanger
            Preferred Applications
        Run

All of these start up OK and work, on cursory examination, except the Avahi Browsers which I don't understand and which appear to do nothing as no window appears on screen.
    4. I'm not quite sure I can yet see the use of a login manager such as SLiM, since I seem to get on quite nicely without it but since I've heard it mentioned a lot I'm sure I'm just missing the point.

  • Weblogic Server 9.2 not starting

    Hello All,
Our weblogic server 9.2 admin server is not being started. This is a admin instance and we are having issue with the managed server startup as well.
We get the following error message - I have read another thread as well on this forum for different version of weblogic but nothing seems to be working. Currently the log says that some ldap files inside the ldap directory and log files are owned via root and when we try to start the server with dmadmin user, the files are not accessable.
    Our problem is -
    (1) It is a production box so we have to careful when we change the ownership of the files if required from root to dmadmin.
    (2) If we change the ownership or delete the ldap files how it will impact to the production environment.
    (3) We have test environment and there all these files are owned by dmadmin user but in production some how few of them are owned by root and not starting up...since we are using the dmadmin seesion to start it....
I am pretty new to Weblogic server so dont know how to solve it. Please share your thoughts....

Thanks Arun. Your reply is helpful. How can I identify weather I am using the node manager or not....What we use is the following script to start the server...
#this script will start Documentum Application
    . /home/dmadmin/.profile
    nohup /documentum/bea9.2/domains/DctmDomain/startWebLogic.sh > /documentum/dba/log/Weblogic/StartWL.log &
    sleep 90
    nohup /documentum/bea9.2/domains/DctmDomain/startMethodServer.sh >/documentum/dba/log/Weblogic/startMethodServer.log &
    sleep 90
These are the files currently owned via root. I have asked the Unix team to change the ownership because I even can not delete the file inside the ldap directory owned via root. Then I will try to restart the server ....
    <Domain_Home>\data\ldap\ldapfiles\EmbeddedLDAP.tran
    <Domain_Home>\logs\adminServer.log
    <Domain_Home>\logs\DctmDomain.log
Kindly suggest if we are on the right track....and about the node manager...
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
One more thing if you see our script -
#this script will start Documentum Application
    . /home/dmadmin/.profile
    nohup /documentum/bea9.2/domains/DctmDomain/startWebLogic.sh > /documentum/dba/log/Weblogic/StartWL.log &
    sleep 90
    nohup /documentum/bea9.2/domains/DctmDomain/startMethodServer.sh >/documentum/dba/log/Weblogic/startMethodServer.log &
    sleep 90
We start the Method server after the weblogic server and we get the nested error which says - Could not obtain the lock
    <Domain_Home>\tmp\DctmServer_MethodServer.lok
    server might already running..
    Thanks for your help

  • [Solved] xorg will not start after update

    Hi there,
I updated Arch and when I restarted my computer lightdm did not start.  I ran systemctl disable lightdm.service and I was able to boot up to a command prompt and login.  I tried to start xorg-server by running startx  (my .xinitrc file has exec mate-session in it) and I got an error.  Here is my xorg log...

It looks like it's trying to start the nouvea driver.  The thing is I'm using the proprietary nvidia driver.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.
    EDIT:
Okay, making progress...  I ran sudo modprobe nvidia and my driver loaded.  I ran startx and xorg-server started, Hooray!  Then my desktop opened and.....   froze.  Ctl-Alt-F1 did not open another tty, everything was completely frozen.  I had to hit the restart switch.  Any ideas?

Okay, I'm not really sure what I did to fix the problem, but it seems to have gone away.  I rebooted a few times and had to manually load my nvidia driver using modprobe in order to start xorg-server.  My system would still freeze though, then I installed the nouveau driver and started using that and the freezes stopped.  I reinstalled the nvidia driver and...  everything seems to work fine.  I reenabled lightdm service and my desktop loaded with no errors and there have been no system freezes.     ?????????????   I have no idea why that worked.

  • Arch not starting - no console login

    Hi guys,
I've been trying stuff for myself for some time now, but seems I need your help.
For a few weeks now, my Arch Linux i868/KDEMod-System is not starting anymore. Last thing I remember is to do an upgrade to the latest KDE(Mod) packages (4.5.0 I guess), but I don't think thats the problem. Here's what happens:
When I boot Arch, it just stops at some point towards the end of the boot process - soon after ntp and boinc daemons are loaded - with the message "Error opening display", and eventually error messages about vc processes respawning too fast - the virtual consoles 1-x, I guess. So no chance to login. The only reaction I get is the switch to runlevel 6 when pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL.
I thought it was an X11 issue and switched drivers from nvidia to nv to vesa, no success. I then disabled loading KDE in the inittab, no change either. Now I am down to runlevel 3, but still the same. I am a bit confused because I thought X shouldn't try to start anymore like this, but I still get "error opening display".
The grub menu Arch fallback option doesn't do anything different either. Next thing I thought about is using an older kernel, but there's just one in /boot. /var/log's don't look helpful to me either... excerpts at the bottom.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Xaver

  • SAP not starting after crash: Terminateing With error code 12

    Hi,
After system crash SAP is not starting normally. When running startsap under SIDadm puts out: /usr/sap/TST/SYS/exe/run/startdb: Terminateing With error code 12
    startdb.log shows that:
/oracle/TST/102_64/bin/sqlplus: error while loading shared libraries: libsqlplus.so: cannot open shares object file: No such file or directory
I have checked - file and directory are present.
However - when manually starting DB under oraSID and then logging in as SIDadm and starting SAP - everything starts normally.
(Allthough SID is has been changed before - system also worked normally after SID change) I have checked userrights and groups , also profile - everything seems to be normal. Any ideas?

    Hi,
1.what UNIX Flavor are we talking about  -> SuSe
2.What SAP Kernel Release is in place (may be 6.40 non EX2 ?) -> 6.40
3.What release is the DB suposed to have? -> 10.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Prod
4.I see, you are calling an sqlplus from a 10.2 ORACLE_HOME.
Is that the correct HOME the DB is running with ? -> Yes
5.Can you start the DB with
    brconnect -c -u / -f dbstart  -> NO
    Error is:
    :devadm 51> brconnect -c -u / -f dbstart
    BR0801I BRCONNECT 7.00 (40)
