X11 won't intall
Hi,
I'm trying to get OpenOffice software to run. The prompt says I need Apple X11 to make it work. I downloaded X11 but it won't install -- even though I'm running 10.5.7 the prompt says I need 10.3 or higher!!!! Any workarounds to this conundrum? Thanks!
PS I'm on a G4 if that matters.
There is a very good chance you downloaded the Mac OS X 10.3 Panther version of X11. Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard includes X11 on the installation DVD, and I think Leopard default installs X11. You should be able to find it in Applications -> Utilities -> X11.
And on Leopard, X11 should start automatically when you start OpenOffice.
If you have replaced the Leopard X11 with the Panther X11, then you will need to go back to your installation DVDs and re-install it. In theory you should be able to find an X11.pkg file burried in the installation DVD, otherwise you might need something like Pacifist.

NOTE: There is also NeoOffice which is a version of OpenOffice especially built for Mac OS X.
<http://www.neooffice.org>
PS I'm on a G4 if that matters.
Yes it does. To the best of my knowledge you can not run OpenOffice 3.1 on a PowerPC chip (unless they have changed that). If I'm right, then you might only be able to use OpenOffice 2.4. And if that is the case, you might really be better using NeoOffice, which runs natively on Mac OS X (intel and PowerPC) without the need for X11 (it really is a nicer interface).

Ever since upgrading to Leper, X11 won't start. If I open the console window, the following is logged repetitively, which looks like an invalid start command that is followed by command line help. Anybody know what I can do to fix this?

They sugguest removing the -launchd boot option from your Xorg plist file. I did this and it did not fix the problem for me, I still get the Unrecognized option: -launchd. But other users have reported success, so it's worth a shot.
You might also look into what the guys in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1402209&tstart=205) did to try to solve launching problems. -
I downloaded Mac OS. Mavericks and now my laptop won't intall the program it's says disk error and I already open te utility and repaid the disk and still stuck on that intall screen wat can I do
Why did you wipe the drive?
Were you having problems?
If you were those problem may be related to a failing hard drive and that is why the TM backup could be restored.
In you topic header you say the system won't boot from the SL DVD, But it di for you to wipe the drive. Then it should again boot from the SL DVD.
Insert the DVD and reboot, hold down the Option key and select the Optical drive, SL DVD, as the Boot source. -
I just got a new I phone and it requires new software for my osx version 10.5.8 but the new software won't intall. It says I need the thing I'm installing to install it?
You need to contact Apple and order and purchase the next Upgrade Disk, Snow Leopard 10.6.3, install that and then update that to 10.6.8. You didn't give enough information to know if you need to then Upgrade that to Mountain Lion 10.8 in the Mac App Store by purchasing that, Or even IF your computer is capable of Upgrading to 10.8.
OS X Mountain Lion system requirements
To install Mountain Lion, you need one of these Macs:
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space
Hope this helps -
Hello,
this is a desperate call: I am at a conference with my MBP, (10.6.7, all updates done). I need Matlab for my presentation, which needs X11.
X11 (and XQuartz) decided that they won't start anymore: the icon bounces in the dock for a while, then sits there without the little light underneath, and X11 is "non responding".
The logs show something like this.
I have googled and searched: similar problems once in a while appear but no posted solution.
I tried:
1) reinstalling XQuartz (I would reinstall X11, but how? I do not have the disks with me, I am away!)
2) from an admin account
3) create a new account.
4) repair permissions.
5) reinstall the font update from Apple that was recently issued.
HELP PLEASE!!!

11-05-16 5:02:04 PM org.x.privileged_startx[20781] font_cache: DoneHere is the solution: there was nothing wrong with x11 per se!
The problem was that about 30 files in /usr/bin (like gzip, egrep, hexdump etc) had been hosed (they had 0 file size). The puzzling messages was due to the fact that startx uses hexdump, which was simply silently doing nothing (since it had 0 size!).
I do not know what or when these files were zeroed: I suspect a recent OSX update which did not complete and I had to forcefully reboot.
I have fixed it enough to work (copying those files from another mac), but who knows what else lurks beneath the surface of apparent serenity!
I am actually surprised that the whole system did not stop functioning completely.
MORALE: if something looks strange in the logs with x11 or other apps, check the file sizes in your /usr/bin, you may be surprised too! -
X11 won't start (sets monitor to standby) with nVidia card
Hello everyone!
I'm having some trouble getting my computer to work properly. Yesterday it was working perfectly, but today it would't start again. After some troubleshooting I've determined that the problem lies with X11 and the graphics driver. The bootloader, grub, and arch itself, boots perfectly in runlevel 3, but the moment you run "startx" it would appear to be loading for a while and finally the screen goes to standby mode and there is no way out of that other than reseting the computer using the reset button. I've tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and installing nouveau drivers, but it still won't start X, this time arround, it would just hang up with a white screen.
I've also tried removing xorg.conf and also using nvidia utility to generate a new one, but neither seems to work.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't report any errors, it just gives different info from the configuration and the graphics card and just ends there.
I've tried booting with a debian live USB but it would't boot either (the computer would just restart). I've also tried a Kubuntu live USB, this time arround, it would start to boot but the graphics appeared to be corrupted (strange colored noise all over the screen) and eventually it would just hang up. Using nomodeset Kubuntu finally booted (using vesa I guess?), but the same didn't work in Arch (I'm guessing because I have the nvidia drivers installed instead of nouveau).
In conclussion, something appears to be wrong with the graphics card, I dont't know if it's a software problem or a hardware problem, as it started from one day to the other, without any upgrades in between, and it just doesn't work in any of the 3 distributions I've tested.
Any suggestions in what to do to troubleshoot this?
Thanks in advance,
Santiago.-Xorg.0.log

X11, won't even launch, what's up with that?
Hi,
I'm trying to use X11 tools for the 1st time since installing Leopard. It won't even launch, it seems to try to launch, (i see it on the dock) but then it just closes back down. I need to use this app, i'm trying to convert a word doc into a pdf.
any ideas?,
cheers everyone,HI,
*"i'm trying to convert a word doc into a pdf."*
Try opening the Word document. Then File/Print. In the dialog box that opens, bottom left side click PDF/Save as PDF. I'm not certain this will work, but you can try.

X11 won't open new terminals in 10.4.9
After updating to 10.4.9 on my Intel MacBook (2 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 160GB HD), X11 has begun to act very flaky. At random intervals it will just start refusing to open new xterm's, at which point I have to restart X11, killing all the open windows I have.
This is particularly annoying, since essentially 100% of the work I do is Unix/X11 based. My laptop has essentially become useless for work. I certainly won't be updating to 10.4.9 on my work MacPro, that's for sure!
MacPro, MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9)An Archive & Install did the trick, both for my X11 problem and my KeyChain problem (another thread). I'm sitting at 10.4.8 now, but I have a FireWire external drive on the way, and will try to install up to 10.4.9 on that as a separate bootable system, to see if it works from scratch, more out of curiousity than anything else. I'm happy with 10.4.8.
Thanks baltwo!

I have installed X11 from the Tiger install disk (optional installs). It won't launch. When I try to run it from the Terminal program, this is what is returned:
stevens-computer:~ steven$ /Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11

Any ideas to resolve this would be most appreciated. Thank you.

MacBook Pro 15" Intel Dual Core Mac OS X (10.4.7)Tim,
Thanks for the suggestion. As it turns out, I did not install X11 from the original DVD set that came with my MacBook Pro, but rather from the Apple Store Tiger package. When I installed it from the DVD that came with my Mac, it worked. I appreciate your help!

This is how I fixed it:
Simply remove all the .pllist files with X11 in them in the preference folder (2 in my case) and then quit the X11 app.

Re: My x11 is malfunctioning.
Mar 9, 2013 2:16 PM (in response to chltjdtn)
Had this same problem. XQuartz would not start working after a complete reinstall of X11, or reboot, repair permissions etc. Ended up realizing it was a User specific problem, so I removed the X11 .plist files from ~/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences. I don't remember the exact names of the two .plist files I removed, but they were org.x11.pllist or something along those lines. Once I removed these two files and rebooted XQuartz the skies parted and X11 worked. Hope this helps!

X11 won't start up under 10.6.5
(1) I can't even open a new X11 terminal window.
(2) Launching an application from Terminal that uses X11 gives me the error
dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/X11/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib
Referenced from: /usr/X11/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib
Reason: Incompatible library version: libfontconfig.1.dylib requires version 13.0.0 or later, but libfreetype.6.dylib provides version 11.0.0
Trace/BPT trap
(3) I installed XQuartz to see if that had a more up-to-date version of freetype but all I got was an error starting up, and in the error report was:
dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/X11/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib
Referenced from: /usr/X11/lib/libfontconfig.1.dylib
Reason: Incompatible library version: libfontconfig.1.dylib requires version 13.0.0 or later, but libfreetype.6.dylib provides version 11.0.0
Trace/BPT trap
So the same error. For some reason either 10.6.5 updated a requirement without updating the provided library, or something...Bill Scott wrote:
*The "/opt" indicates that you have, either now or at some point, installed Fink. That is 3rd party software and could be the cause of your problems.*
No. That is wrong. Fink typically installs into /sw. Macports and the xquartz.macosforge.org X11 it is optionally associated with install into /opt.
So I confused the two. What's the difference?
Specifically, http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki X11 installs into /opt so as to not clobber the official X11 distribution.
That is likely the source of the original poster's problem.
The original poster's problem is solved. It was caused by Fink populating DYLDLIBRARYPATH with its own path. Without that, X11 ran fine. Who would have guessed?
*If X11 still doesn't work, reinstall your OS.*
You can't be serious?
You can't be serious about cherry-picking item #3 out of context from my X11 troubleshooting list, can you?
Yes, I am serious. If
1) Create a new account and try X11 there. If it works in the new account, delete any X11
preference files or .X files in the old account, log out, back in, and try again.
and
2) If that doesn't work, try repairing permissions
don't get X11 running, the machine is seriously hosed. -
X11 won't display UTF-8 characters (using Kbabel)
Hello everyone
Boy, the discussion lists have changed! Forums are a good idea, though.
I'm a volunteer open-source translator, and the most effective translation editor for us is Kbabel. (LocFactoryEditor [1] for OSX is very good, though. I use it continually, and BBEdit [2] for CVS/SVN management of translation files.)
When I installed Kbabel, everything went OK, but when I tried to open a PO (Portable Object, translation file format, basically a text file) file, the translations in my language (Vietnamese) were just gibberish. None of the accented characters displayed correctly. Since my language is pretty much all accented characters, this was a critical problem. Characters entered had the same problem. No readable data in, no readable data out, no translation possible.
I had set my X11 prefs to inherit my keyboard choice, and had chosen the right keyboard. I have Lucida Grande set as my default font, and it handles Vietnamese very well.
This was months ago. I reported it as a bug against Kbabel, but with investigation, we found it was an X11 problem. I was told at the time (sorry, I can't remember the reference) that this was a known X11 bug, which Apple had not yet fixed. Judging by the continuing mess when I try to use Kbabel now, it hasn't been fixed.
How do we track bugs reported to Apple, or continuing problems of this type? Do you think this is really the problem, or is there another way to solve it?
Any help very much appreciated.

Hello there. I'm trying to launch X11 to run things like Gimp and the like. When I double click on the X11 icon in the Utilities folder, the app looks like it launches (bounces int he dock) and then stops (disappears from the dock).
I trashed the com.x11.plist file.
Still does the same thing. I've used X11 in the past, back in OS 10.2, and I can see it in my /sw/fink/ folder, as well as in my Utilities Folder.
Any fixes anyone knows about? If you have updated to 10.4 and are still using the same X11 version from 10.2 days then you need to install a later version of X11. that old version you have will not run under 10.3 much less 10.4
It should be included on your 10.4 retail disk. If not you will have to download it from Apple or another site. -
X11 won't work, I need help!
I have X11 installed in my utilities folder but when I try and open it the icon disappears just as fast as it shows up on my dock. Any ideas on what my issue could be or how I can get this to work?
X11 was probably installed along with Tiger. What version is it?
Here's the current version 2.1.5 that you can download.

After moving my /Users directories from my old mac to my new one using the migration tool, X11 refuses to install, telling me that "this system does not need this update" if I try to run the latest update, or "this system contains newer software" if I try to install the original... I'm pretty sure this is not the case, because X11.app is nowhere to be found.
Are there any files in the user directories that may be making the installer think that X11 is already present? Alternatively, is it possible to force a .pkg to install ignoring all errors (maybe through the command line)?
All help would be appreciated...
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)You did not say which Mac you migrated from or to. This is important information. If you migrated your apps from an older non-Intel Mac to an
Intel-based Mac, many of your apps will be broken on your new Mac.
The migration tool is great for moving your data files, but not you apps. This is especially true for X11. You need to install X11 from the OS X DVD that came
with your new Mac, then install the latest update. You should probably also install all your other apps because they are probably broken too.
