X11 / xterm won't even launch anymore

I was using X11 with the minor glitches (i.e. cannot move x11 windows to secondary display). For some reason, x11 stopped working altogether today. I go to /Applications/Utilities/X11 and nothing happens.
I checked /var/log/system.log and it has the following errors:

Coincidentally, X11 stopped working after I ran System Update to install the Quicktime and iTunes updates today.
Anyone else start having this problem?

I was checking the boards and found someone who said their org.x.X11.plist file was not being installed after they had deinstalled 10.5 X11, installed 10.4 X11, and went back to 10.5 X11.
I had did that earlier and wasn't having problems, but I went ahead and pulled that file from another 10.5 computer and copied that over to the affected Macbook.
Problem solved.

    cheers everyone,

    HI,
*"i'm trying to convert a word doc into a pdf."*
Try opening the Word document. Then File/Print. In the dialog box that opens, bottom left side click PDF/Save as PDF. I'm not certain this will work, but you can try.

  • Installed 4.9... now iTunes won't even launch

Okay.... here it is: I downloaded and installed 4.9 and now when I click on the iTunes shortcut on my desktop, iTunes won't even launch. In addition, my laptop won't even shut down properly now. I get a bizarre error message and it hangs for 4 or 5 minutes (despite the fact that I try to End Program over and over again). I have had to take the battery out to shut it down because of all this. More important, I can't access my iTunes!
    thanks,

Try using the "Clean' method for uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes. See Da Gohpa's link, toonz' link, as well as all the related links and activities provided below.
You may first want to try a “Repair Install”:
    - Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panels -> Add or Remove Programs
    - Select iTunes, Select Change/Remove button, Select "Repair", Click OK.
If that does not work, then read all the below and apply it to your situation:

b Uninstalling iTunes will not erase your music files,
or the two meta-data files iTunes uses to store your music info files (iTunes 4 Music Library.itl & iTunes Music Library.xml). However, it is
    i always
a prudent idea to have backups of your music files on some external source (CD, DVD or External Hard Drive).
b Prior to implementing the info in the links above,
close ALL running programs. In addition, you
    b should
    i temporarily
disable any TSR programs like firewalls, virus scanners, spy sweepers and the like. You will need to disable them both before uninstalling ANY software and/or before installing ANY software. Most of these TSR programs have System Tray Icons (usually located in the lower-right corner of your XP screen), that allow for an ‘exit’ or ‘quit’ or ‘shutdown’. Usually a single right-click on the icon will bring up a selection menu.
These TSR programs can impede installation of some software or create conflicts later on during operation (or lack of operation) Some anecdotal reports suggest that iTunes 4.8 & 4.9 are affected. Based on the amount of success by folks here who have tried the Clean Install, this seems to be a good solution for a variety of iTunes operational ‘glitches’
Please note that your TSR programs will all restart upon reboot. You will not be left unprotected. This also means that you need to remember to disable them when reinstalling iTunes after rebooting.
    b Also:
You may still need to turn off the 'Fast User Switching' even if no one else is using the computer.
==>Start/Control Panel/User Accounts/Change the way users log on and off/ ==> remove the check mark from FUS.

  • ISync won't even launch- MacBook

    I just got a lovely Macbook 17"
It's perfect but for one thing- I can't get my Palm Zire 31 to sync with the macbook, and I suspect this has something to do with the fact that iSync won't even launch. It bounces a few times, and then nothing when I attempt to launch it. I can see the iSync menu but clicking it to drop-down is useless. I have to force quit it.
    Please help!

You must reinstall iSync using Pacifist and an original Mac OS X 10.4 Install or Upgrade DVD. To do so, download Pacifist:
    http://www.charlessoft.com
Then, launch Pacifist and insert your Mac OS X 10.4.2 Install DVD. Wait for it to mount, then press the Open Mac OS X Install packages button. It will begin loading the Essentials.mpkg files.
Find the Contents of Essential.pkg package, and click on the triangle to open it. Click on the triangle in front of the Applications folder, and it will open to reveal a number of files, including the iSync.app file. Select the iSync.app file and press the install button.
You will then have to reapply the latest Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo update package for your intel-based MacBook Pro in order to update iSync 2 to version 2.3. You will find that package here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1047combointel.html

  • X6 errors, now it won't even start anymore

    Hei!
I've had the X6 now for about a month and a half and while I was updating the software something went wrong. It couldn't reinstall the backup.
Ever since that moment my phone has been doing weird stuff.. The touchscreen sometimes doesn't respond or just fades away and the phone restarts.
I get errormessages that the memorycard can't be found (I have the 32gb version) and properties disappear.
Now the phone won't even start when I have my simcard inserted. It gives the error message 'Selftest failed, contact the reseller'.
I can't do anything with it, the message disappears when I take out the battery but when I start it up again the same message appears..
Who can help me? It's really urgent!

A hard reset (x6, 5800 and 5230 only) is done by the following (warning, this deletes all data on your phone):
1.) Turn off the phone and remove battery for 5min
    2.) Reinsert battery
3.) Press and hold the green, red and camera buttons. DO NOT LET GO.
4.) While holding the three buttons, press the power key to boot the phone up.
5.) Keep on pressing until you see the country selection screen.
A correctly done hard reset would show you that everything on the phone (contacts, messages, calendar entries, etc) would be deleted. So it is advisable to back them up. Upon restoration, do not restore settings or files if possible.

  • Time Machine won't even launch: "Error code -43"

Thwarted from the outset, I can't even launch the app.
    Any clues?

    Hi All
I also cannot launch Time Machine (posted a separate thread here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1244151&tstart=0 but no replies there yet)
I have a Journaled HFS+ external drive attached, I have turned TM on in the prefs and it has completed a number of backups. The 'backupdb' folder is visible on the backup drive.
However, I cannot get the application to launch, no matter what - click on the dock icon, click on the icon in apps, whatever. The dock icon does not even bounce. There is no response.
I want my over the top galactic animation too!
Anyone seen this happen or know why it might?

  • Updating Captivate 6.1.0319 for Mavericks OS when it won't even launch?

How do I install the correct update for Mac OS Mavericks and Captivate 6.1.0.319? Clearly without the update this version will not run under Mavericks, so I cannot perform a Help > Update as described in the download guide. Is there another way or am I missing something here?
Our clients use version 6 so we must be able to continue with that instead of version 7 unfortunately.

    Hi Hlmanshu,
Thanks for your reply but we've since solved the issue in the following way... (possibly not correct but seems to work!):
Basically we had an install of Captivate 6.1 on a Mac OS X 10.8 which was working fine and recently changed from the month to month subscription into the yearly month to month. This change resulted in it being patched to 6.1.039 (I think or maybe it was 6.1.038), as after a recent upgrade to Mavericks, the install stopped launching. After some fiddling around I checked the forums and eventually found the issue documented, and the page to the solution downloads - http://www.adobe.com/support/captivate/downloads.html.
However the solution for the 6.1.039 users was to launch the app and use the Help > Update function to obtain a Mavericks compatible fix… clearly we could not do this, hence the original post on the forum. I was wanting a standalone download of the Mavericks fix for our version, and maybe if I had emailed your subs support then it would have been provided. But either I was miss reading the downloads page, or missing something else, so I decided to fiddle a little further before I saw your reply.
So I wondered if I could install the ‘non-recommended’ patch to at least get it launching, and then use the menu to update. The first patch download I tried did not work (possibly due to a download error), but trying 6 Patch (6.0.1.240), it installed without issue. Captivate then ran on Mavericks, and I followed the Help > Update option to patch it up again.
So we have, at least for now, a working 6.2 version of Captivate. Incidentally our yearly month by month licence seems to work for this version even though it lists version 7 - which is no good to us as our current client uses 6.
I would recommend the following for future situations like this:
    1. Adobe send email communication to all known users of their software, where OS and (if possible to check) version of install is likely to have an issue to Mac OS or other OS updates. It seems that on the forums the first patch was published in Dec 2013, so I suspect early Mavericks users were rather frustrated at the delay - but until you make this information more public you will continue to frustrate users over the next few months whilst Mavericks continues to roll out.
    2. Clearly the error given in this situation, a caution symbol, can be considered a local computer problem - especially as the frequency of using Captivate may mean the upgrade of Mavericks and the next use of Captivate are weeks apart. We lost a few hours trying various OS level checks such as permissons, checking subscriptions, and reinstalling the version we had. On that point, without the application launching there was no simple way to confirm which version we had installed, so when I eventually found the forum and upgrade instructions it was not obvious which one to install. Each of the files was a significant download size, so again some lost hours waiting for patches we did not need.
    3. Clarification at some level about the changed subscriptions, especially the fact that a version 7 licence will permit version 6 to be used instead.
In regards 1,2, and 3, I must apologise if I've missed something and this information was already communicated... but having the information at my finger tips when our instructional deisgner was needing to complete work for a client would have been great.
Thanks and I'll post again should our current install (what ever version it is) buggers up in some way soon!

  • Oracle 9i Installer Won't Even Launch??

Hi, I have a brand new installation of Windows 2000 Server with SP 3 on a P-II 366 with 256 megs ram. When I try to run setup.exe on CD 1, I get the following error right away:
"The Java Runtime Environment was not found at c:\docume~1\admini~1\locals~1\temp\orainstall\jre\bin\jrew.exe. Hence, the Oracle Universal Installer cannot be run. Please visit http://www.javasoft.com and install JRE version 1.1.7 or greater and try again."
I've tried downloading and installing the latest (and even older) versions of JRE. Nothing works. Does anyone know the fix for this? Why won't this install under Windows 2000??? Thanks in advance.
    ...Brad

Well, I figured it out. It was indeed the CDs I had created. Turns out, that the
download (and yes, it was a .zip file not an ISO as I had said previously)
has characteristics such that it can only be properly burned to CD with
certain settings. In NERO, I had to select Mode 2 rather than Mode 1 and
    ISO9660 standard isn't comatible either.
I had just burned the uncompressed zip images to CD so I could easily take
them to the test server and in so doing, had made changes to the format or
filenames such that the installer couldn't run. Pretty crazy because I've
copied tons of stuff to CD before, but only now have I ever encountered this
sort of situation. I couldn't even copy back from the CD to the hard
drive because the damage had already been done.
I hope the other poor souls who did what I do read this before they pull their hair out. Thanks for everyone's comments.
    ...Brad
