X120e BIOS update failed - any remedy?

Updating the BIOS through the Lenovo System Update software in Windows 7, hung at "Programming BIOS region" for a couple of hours, now won't boot at all (blank screen, fan, nothing else). Obviously an X120e is out of warranty (or this one is at least), is there anything to be done for this?
I'd rather not go back to the owner and say "Lenovo's software updates killed your hardware, but they'll be happy to sell you a new laptop" because I'm pretty sure it won't be a Lenovo in that case.

Try to reset BIOS and Embedded Controller:
unplug AC adapter and battery, press and hold during 30-40 seconds the power button, release it, plug battery and AC adapter, try to boot up.

  • System BIOS update failed

    Hello,
I need your help.  I ran HP System Diagnostics following recent BSOD incidents (about 3) on my Pavilion dv6.  I ran all the tests successfully except Memory Test as it takes 6 hours (approximately).
Interestingly the BIOS test came up with an error message "The System BIOS update failed. Failed reading BIOS image file".  I tried running BIOS driver update from th HP website for my dv6 notebook but I am not sure it worked.  During the update the computer would shut down - is that normal?
What can I do to check that my BIOS from 25 January 2013 is the current version? More importantly prevent future BSOD appearing.  I have plenty of memory, so rather intrigued.  Ran Norton and Microsoft Security and no viruses etc.
    Hope you can help.
    Many thanks,
    Barbs

    Hi,
So the system shut down is normal for BIOS update and if I can restart the computer, therefore assuming the update worked.
I checked HP System Diagnostics the BIOS test still returns with an error message "The System BIOS update failed. Failed reading BIOS image file".
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks again,
    Barbs

You must install all Windows 8 Update, before you windows 8.1 Update use
Never use MS Defender and other antivirus software.
After successful system update, install this software

    The error displays when ...
the update requires certain hardware or software that is not installed on your computer (examples: keyboard replaced with a non-HP keyboard or Microsoft .NET software is not installed),
the computer does not meet a certain minimum hardware or software requirement (examples: 4 GB minimum memory, 200 MB free disk space, or .NET version 2.0 required and 1.0 is installed) .

  • HP Compaq 8510w BIOS Update failed, stuck in bootloop.

Let me begin with how this happened. I wanted to create a Hackintosh and decided to use my HP Compaq 8510w for that purpose. But since HP whitelists what WiFi cards you can use (OS X is not compatible with Intel), I had to flash a custom BIOS that removed the restrictions. This flashing worked though it would say it failed and should be flashed again. But it would still work and load everything correctly. I finally decided to restore the BIOS but the installation failed and the laptop is now stuck in a boot loop. I want to know is there any way I can recover the BIOS (WITHOUT SENDING THE UNIT IN FOR REPAIRS) or if I need to purchase a new Motherboard for it. I have tried using the Win+B recovery method though I might have done something wrong because the laptop takes no notice. Do I have to use a USB Floppy or can a Flashdrive be used?
    Thanks,
                     Mark

try it without naming the file. there is only one file that is a ROM filetype. That is the EUR5.14 file in the F5.14 BIOS update. There is also a F.5.11 available under XP.  The OS does not matter as this is  cross platform code that is loaded before the operating system.
If the preceding does not work then you wil have to go online and find a BIOS recovery company that is relatively local to you. Their websites cover what you need to do for them (provide a valid  ROM file. (perhaps a eeprom chip matching the one in your PC)
Going to this level is sometimes a bit too much for non techies as it requires acquiring and properly using a special tool to remove and install the CMOS eeprom chip. I have no idea what level of expertise you have.

  • Pavilion g6-2235us bios update failed - error msg on boot

I've had trouble updating to Windows 8.1, so I did a bios update, as recommended by the HP Web Site, but it failed, and now the laptop won't boot.  It displays error message "Your computer needs to be repaired:\bcd, error code 0xc0000034..."  Additional info is available by hitting escape, and I can get into a black screen with options:
    f1 System information
    f2 System diagnostics
    f9 Boot device options
    f10 BIOS setup
    f11 system recovery
I've been down all those paths, with no luck on proceeding any further.  f10 shows me all the bios setup screens and the bios version shown is F29, the version that I tried to upgrade to.
I've tried removing the big battery and pressing the start button for one minute - no joy.
    I've tried holding Windows+B+start - no joy
I guess I'm down to trying to create a USB Key with the BIOS on it, and that's where I am stumped.  The BIOS softpaq for this machine is sp66880.exe.  I've got that on a fat32 usb stick with the volume label HP_Tools,  and I've got HP tools on the stick too.  When I try to boot with the stick by pressing windows+b+start, the light on the USB stick flashes a lot, but ultimately I get the message "The system bios recovery failed. Unable to open bios image file."  I have the feeling that I just don't have the proper setup on that USB stick.  I tried to run sp66880.exe on another computer, but it tells me that it is going to immediately flash the bios, which I definitely don't want to do (on my Toshiba laptop!).
I would greatly appreciate any help you all can give me on how to create the recovery USB stick in the proper format.  Thanks in advance.

    Fixed!
It turns out that the bios update actually succeeded, but something in the hard drive boot files got corrupted.  I was able to make a Windows 8 Recovery USB stick on another machine, and finagle around to have the HP laptop reformat the hard drive to original factory condition.  Fortunately, I made a very recent Macrium image before this most recent problem started, so the next step is to restore that image.  With the new v. F29 bios, hopefully this beast will finally upgrade to Windows 8.1.

  • G550 BIOS update failed. Reset CMOS?

The BIOS update from Lenovo failed on my G550 rendering it useless.  I get fan and HDD action and all LEDs light up but NOTHING on screen...  The CMOS battery is soldered or glued in.  Where are the CMOS jumpers?

    Hello,
I'm new to BIOS issues, and this one sort of takes the cake. I tried to update my Lenovo G550 (serial 2958)'s BIOS to the updated x64_18CN44WW_(2.53) bios, and the computer crashed most of the way through. Now I'm dealing with a bricked Lenovo. I understand that there are warnings about letting the computer go to sleep before updating the BIOS, which I did, but I simply didn't look deeply enough to find these warnings before I attempted the update. But that doesn't matter now.
What does matter is that I'm working with a Lenovo that needs a reflashed BIOS, and right now I'm working through the options provided by this website:
    http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/2105-BIOS-Recovery-procedures
I've tried Method 1 with NTSF partitioning (on a 4GB USB stick), and Method 1 with FAT partitioning (on a 1GB USB stick), both with no success. I'm doing this with the 2.53 BIOS file from the lenovo website's updated installer, as I don't have the backup BIOS handy (it's saved on the bricked laptop).
I need some information to help me either fix my laptop. Specifically, does the Lenovo G550 (Serial 2958) definitely have a Phoenix BIOS? Are there any reports of a USB stick boot being used to successfully flash a bricked computer using the Fn-B boot method? Does the motherboard have a Joint Action Test Group port? Are there any 'legacy' BIOS files I should try to use available to Lenovo staff? What's the course of action a tech would take if I sent my Lenovo in for repairs?

  • T430 BIOS update failing with -s switch

I am attempting to update the BIOS on my T430 using the -s switch.  I have downloaded version 1.20 from the Lenovo site.  This version says that it includes a fix for the problem with -s.  However, I am still unable to flash using -s.  I get an error:  secure flash authentication failed

Hi @AndreasN  , welcome to the HP Forums. I understand you are looking for an instructional to install Windows 8.1 Pro x 32 on your Omni tablet.
If you are saying that you want to install a retail copy of Windows on it, I do not have an instructional for you and I have never done it on an Omni tablet. I cannot guarantee you wouldn't have any problems, but I can give you a few things you will need. Here are the drivers you will need:
HP Omni 10 5600eg Tablet Drivers
If you have Windows 8.1 DVD's you would need a computer to make an installation USB drive to get it on your tablet:
Create installation media for Windows 8.1. There are many other instructionals out there as well, if you need more info.
If I am wrong, and you just mean to do a factory reset, these instructions cover that: Recovering Software on Your HP Tablet (Windows 8)

    Hi,
If you laptop works well, don't update it. If not, don't use HP Support Assistant or any other program for updating/downloading the BIOS!! Download it:
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55299.exe
manually to a folder, close all running applications (browser, etc..) and then install it by double clicking on it and following the instructions..

  • BIOS Update failing to install via HP Support Assistant.

I have tried four times to install a BIOS update (Rom Family SSID 2AF7; Version 80.20Ap1) provided within the Support Assistant, on each occation the update fails to install. I get no error messages. The computer restarts, but the previous BIOS version (AMI 80.19 (2014-07-18)) remains installed.
I have tried stopping my antivirus program, but this didn't help. I have noticed that the command screen hangs with a flashing cursor, but no instructions are visible and then my computer restarts.
Is it possible that the update is corrupt? Any advice on how I should proceed would be welcome.

  • Bios Update Fail - Under Warranty but No Support

    Hi,
New to the board and looking for some help. I have a w500 still in warranty. We have been having issues with running Vista and the machine not rebooting after hibernation. Today I found some time to run updates using the pre-loaded ThinkVantage software on the machine. There were quite a few on there including a Bios update... upon running the updates and the machine restarting at the end, I get a black screen....  and nothing... the power lights are on but not more.
I have called Lenovo tech support and they advised me that because I did the Bios update (as part of the many updates that were suggested I required) I have voided my warranty support for this problem.... apparantly I was made aware of this as part of the disclaimer prior to running the updates!!!
Does anyone have any suggestions on steps forward from this point?

In there you have the old bios versions : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-74858#version
NO!!! Don't install that update (assuming the installer allows you to do that.)
That link is to the BIOS update for the ThinkPad W510 No wonder your machine may fail to boot correctly after installing that.
You want to create a bootable CD with the latest BIOS for the ThinkPad W500 which can be found at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70354 There are links to earlier versions of the BIOS for the W500 at the bottom of that page as well, if you want to go back to the original version delivered out-of-the-box, but there's no real reason to do that.
Booting from a CD is probably the safest method of updating the BIOS, since it does only that update without interference from any other updates or software (Lenovo's system Update should really only allow BIOS updates to be installed separately from other updates). However, I don't know what happens when the updater finds that the existing BIOS on the machine is for another machine type (W510), assuming you've already tried installing the wrong update referenced in the posting above.

  • BIOS Update fail on T530 - Fail to do module option

I tried to update my BIOS on my T530 today.  Tried both 2.07 and 2.50 (I'm running 2.04).  I'm using the Windows app, not the BIOS CD.  With both 2.07 and 2.50, I get the following error message: "Fail to do module option. The utility process has not completed."  Can anyone help?
I saw one thread that indicated this may be because I chose the option to keep my custom start up image when presented with the option, but I was afraid to choose anything else.
FYI, now the Lenovo update utility doesn't even tell me there's a BIOS update available...it's listed in my installation history as a successful update!
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Not problem, there is a key combo with the Shift or Cntrl key or something like that and doing the shutdown which unloads all rendering the Wiindows 8 system in true (Win7 equivalent) OFF. Just google Window 8 shutdown or hibernate. There is a lot on it out there. There is a way to change the OS to shut down that way by default but takes longer to boot each time. It is safer in my opinion since malware is not left loaded and running each time.

  • BIOS update failed

    I am asking for help!!!
[...] I installed a BIOS update the other day and while the update was still in progress my Laptop crashed. Ever since, I cannot boot my device.
I now know there was no need for this update but it has been done and now it is screwed.
As in many forums described my screen remains black, LEDs near Lock and Roll are flushing, the fan turns on, and the DVD drive makes some noise at the start.
I've got an "HP dv5 1199eg" and have tried to follow the steps to recover my BIOS on the web site below

Can somebody please help by enhancing the information given on that website. I may not have done everthing needed to create my usb-key or haven't installed the .exe file properly.
Or my device might not be suitable for that!?
    Thank you for your help!!!
ps.: If answering please do not use gobbledygook as my computer knowledge is limited to a certain level.

    Hey, WannaKnowAbout.
I'm sorrya bout the issue you've ran across. Usually when you get a black screen it means your Hard Drive or the Motherboard is bad.
Let's try a couple of steps.
First,  Follow this Document which will show you how to test the Hard Drive.
By any chance you come back with a failed Hard Drive or Memory please let me know.
Also, if you run this test and the screen is still black, you will need to take the Hard Drive out and test it that way.
You can follow this Video which shows you how to take the Hard Drive out.
After you take the Hard Drive out, Follow this Document again and test the Hard Drive.
If it allows you to get into the BIOS then you have a bad Hard Drive.
Now, if none of these steps work more than likely the BIOS crashed the Motherboard.
If that's the case, I suggest you call HP @8004746836 and see if they can assist you in replacing the notebook or getting it serviced.
If you have any more questions please let me know.

  • Desktop BIOS update fails

HP Support Assistant tells me that there is a BIOS update.  I tell it to go ahead: download and install it.  The multi-step process succeeds with a green checkmark for all but the last step.  Installation fails with an X and no further explanation.  What is one to do?  This update is "HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 2AF3). So I go to the "HP Support - Software and Driver Downloads" web page for my machine.  It suggests an update SP69769.EXE.  I download and run it.  After chugging away, it says that it isn't for my machine.  I guess that the HP web page is wrong then.  A further clue: this was released November 13, 2014.  It is listed as version 80.24a. The BIOS security bulletin is dated 2014 and 2015 and recommends sp67055.exe for my machine.  Version 80.21.  I think that that is the previous version that I had installed in 2014 July. After thrashing about some more, msinfo32 says I have AMI BIOS 80.24, so maybe all is well.  Support assistant seems happy too. I don't know what an ordinary user is supposed to do with problems like this.
