X130e - cannot upgrade to Win 8

Hi - looking for some help here. I am unable to upgrade my x130e to Windows 8, as the Win 8 upgrade advisor says my laptop does not support UEFI secure boot. I checked the support section for the x130e, but there is no recent bios update. The x131e appears to have a new BIOS update that was released to support Win 8, but nothing or x130e.
Also the x130e is on the list of Lenovo Win 8 upgradeable laptops : http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT074688
Appreciate if anyone can help with this. Thanks.

I got it to install with help from MS support. Here are the steps:
1. Search for "msconfig" and start the app.
2. Under the general tab select "diagnostic startup".
3. click OK.
4. Restart machine once.
5. After restart. Initiate windows upgrade.
6. After successful upgrade, return to msconfig and reset setting to "normal startup".

    Hi
The Windows 8.1 upgrade could fail if installed Windows 8 system isnt up to date.
I recommend you to check for available Win 8 updates (control panel -> system -> Windows update)
You should start with Win 8.1 upgrade only when all patches for Win 8 would be installed

    Bluetooth hardware:   Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) 4.0 + High Speed Adapter
                                         Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator
Ever since I upgraded from Win 8 to 8.1, the bluetooth has not been working well.
The option to browse a remote folder or send a file does not work.
I can send a file only by opening the contaning folder, right click, and send to bluetooth, but cannot receive a file unless I go to
run and then open fsquirt.exe .
I have unpaired and uninstalled the devices respectively, and then reinstalled and repaired them. But this does not work .either.
Unfortunately, I am unable to paste  screenshots of the device manager and error messages until I am verified.
Can anyone give me a solution to this problem?

Verify that you have the latest drivers for Windows 8.1 installed from the manufacturer's website.

After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my  DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer recognizing discs. When I first put a disc in the drive runs for a bit and then stops. I've tried updating the driver but it says it has the most current driver. Under manage, it does not show any error codes and it says it is working correctly. I've looked at the regedit and it does not have any of upper and lower filters. I've tried disabling, rebooting, and reenabling. What am I missing? Another issue I've had since upgrading is that my network adapter needs reset several times a day in order to remain connected to wifi.

  • MSI GT70 202US upgraded to win 8.1. Lots of issues

    hi,
i recently upgraded my msi gt70 202us from win 7 to win 8.1 to increase the performance on BF4.
i am facing alot of problems. i just hate this lan card. bigfoot killer networks has the most unreliable hardware and drivers. i cant get the software or the drivers to install. upon trying to install the latest version Bigfoot Networks Killer Network Manager 6.1.0.603 (64Bit) i am getting an error saying
"Your hardware is not supported on this version of windows. The installer cannot continue"
although this version is compatible with win 8.1 as said on the website.
I am trying to just install the drivers and that is not working either.
I tried installing the earlier version, that didnt help either.
and i cannot get the keyboard backlight to work or the eject cd tray option. can someone please help me with this.
and on additional note i would like to update the bios aswell. can someone please help me with that too. I havent updated my bios ever, but i have upgraded from win 7 to 8.1. as i read somewhere upgrading the bios on my model which came with win 7 is not suitable. is there a safe way to update bios.

    Quote from: James D on 24-December-13, 03:10:50
If your laptop came with Windows 7 then you should install Windows 7 BIOS only. However if you want all keys work then install Firmware for Windows 8.
    Again, James, you are wrong.
Re-read your sentence again (if you can understand your own sentences).....
They do NOT need to install the Firmware (or EC firmware) in order for it to work in Windows 8. They need to stay with the Windows 7 EC firmware that originally came installed on their laptop. SCM and everything else work just fine under Windows 8 (and 8.1.....if it works at all) using the EC firmware for Windows 7. How do I know this? I have a Windows 7 based GT70 with everything working fine in Windows 8. Not only this, but it's been said over and over and over. Apparently still hasn't sunk in yet though for some people.
Its ok, these things can get very confusing for some people.

  • Toshiba Satellite P870 upgraded to Win 8.1 does not boot

I have a Toshiba Satellite P870 with Win 8 preinstalled. Soon after upgrade to Win 8.1 and basically successful removal of “watermark error” (secure boot activated) the machine stopped booting completely: after pressing the power button ventilator sound
is heard with periodically changing loudness as well as clicking sound from the speakers. The screen stays black. Attempts to start the PC through pressing F2 or zero buttons did not produce any result. Neither did I succeed with recovery discs I created before:
the system simply does not boot from the disk. It looks like I tried all options offered by Microsoft and Toshiba. I would be happy to roll back to factory settings.
Could someone give me hint what to do next?

    Hi,
For the issue, let us know how to remove the “watermark error".
Meanwhile, I would like to confirm if you could access the BIOS.
I suggest you update the BIOS version to test it.
If you want to repair the startup issue, you should use windows 8.1 recovery discs or installation discs.
Meanwhile, if you cannot access the BIOS, it may be caused by hardware, I suggest you contact the Toshiba manufacturer for further help.

  • System recovery fails after upgrade to Win 8.1 on Satellite L75D-A7283

My elderly uncle forgot the password to his Win 8 user account sometime after upgrading to Win 8.1. He was the administrator, we haven't been able to get Microsoft to reset the account, so I thought to roll back the computer to its factory installation of Win 8.
However, when I try to do that, I get as far as the Reset your PC screen and find that the only target OS is Win 8.1, not the original Win 8. Ok, I accept that. But after choosing to restore Win 8.1, it says "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing."
I have examined the disk by removing it and attaching it to another computer and find that both the original Win 8 recovery partition and the new Win 8.1 GPT recovery partition are both there. They just don't seem to be accessible.
It seems that the Win 8.1 upgrade has made the original factory recovery partition inaccessible, which is not particularly helpful. We have no recovery disks to work from, so I think my only recourse is to try to get a Win 8 factory recovery disk from Toshiba, but I wondered if anyone else has a suggestion? Thanks.

    Satellite L75D-A7283
It's my understanding the upgrade does not modify any other partitions while upgrading Windows itself. Seems likely something else is wrong.
If you did not create recovery media before and cannot do so now, then obtain it from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here.

  • Help, cannot upgrade to Windows 10 on Lenovo Y50-70

Hello everyone, I'm using a Y50-70. From yesterday until now, I cannot upgrade it to Windows 10. I'm using Windows 8.1 Single Language shipped with it. I've tried many ways: - Use wuauclt.exe /updatenow to force Windows Update download Windows 10. After few minutes "Preparing for installation", it says "Update failed. Please try again" - Use Media Creation Tool to update. I tried to choose "Upgrade this PC", no luck. Always generic error "Windows 10 installation has failed" When I choose to create USB bootable disc, I run setup and after processing to 24%, it stopped with same error "Something happened". - Follow other suggestions, I've changed Region in Control Panel to "English (United States)". Same error again. - Even when I downloaded original ISO from Microsoft website and create a bootable USB, it always "Something happened". No more info. These things are driving me mad. Anyone has successfully upgrade your Y50-70 to Windows 10, please help or share your way to do. Thank you very much.

This is kind of disconcerting. I did the reserve and did ALL the latest 8.1 updates and then finally my Windows 10 said it was ready. I read an article that said to right click on the box window that appears when you reserve and then choose check your upgrade status and after that loads, you can also check your compatability report to make sure there are no compatibility issues. I have done all that. I have also backed up all important files to an external HDD in case of failure. I don't know if any of the above will help the OP, but it may list any possible compatibility issues. Maybe your original version of Windows 8.1 is not activated? you can go to Control Panel > System to see that your copy of windows is indeed activated as if not activated, it may cause a failure. That could be a good reason to use the OKR feature. Lastly, seeing that you are overseas, is your 8.1 version a US English version of Windows? If not, perhaps that is why all the tools are failing because maybe you have to download and install whatever previous type installation you had before with Windows 8.0/8.1? I would think performing the Compatibility check as described above may tell you if you are trying to update with a wrong version? Just a thought. Now then, speaking of OKR or other possible problems updating such as I read the latest BIOS update could also cause failures, but specifically speaking about OKR, there are numerous threads out there with all kinds of advice, etc but for me it is too much information and some information may be outdated. So I have a few questions maybe someone can help me BEFORE I leap into the Win 10 arena? 1. I know after upgrading to Win 10, I have supposedly 1 month to downgrade back to 8.1 using the Windows downgrade function. The biggest quuestion I have is, will upgrading to Windows 10 delete my OKR option? 2. I have the Y50-70 Touch UHD with 500 GB SSD. What is the best method of backing up the OKR media for just in case? I have seen several cloning programs mentioned and the Pendrive thread, but I am just wondering what is the best and safest way to ensure the OKR works.I have a 2 TB external HDD I am currently using to perform manual backups with so maybe I could clone the SSD and if so, best software option?   3. Or is the OKR really not necessary if I have the Windows Media Creator tool on the USB drive (I have one for Win 8.1 and one for Win 10)? Is using the Media Creator Tool method better or worse than using OKR? 4. Lastly, in case of catastrophic failure, are discs available from Lenovo? I have found nowhere in the support section that mentions being able to purchase recovery discs and no, my Novo button does not give an option to burn my own discs. All I can do is make a System image file backup and honestly, I don't even understand that. Does that system image file then restore my OKR if I choose to restore from that system image? I'm sorry for so many questions but as I stated there are so many threads on the partitioning issues and restoring OKR and the DIY Pendrive thread to me is very confusing and seems to contradict itself in several steps. I just want to be certain of having a functioning computer if the update fails or I end up with the BSOD. This is my first time using a computer with UEFI and OKR that does NOT allow the burning of recovery files. I have gone through all the WIN 10 FAQs but they do not address these issues. Anyways, thanks in advance if anyone has any answers to my disjointed and probably silly questions. As I get older it seems computers are getting more difficult to understand or maybe I'm just resistant to change lol Thanks again and good luck to the OP with his issues! And I hope I don't have the same problems but I will let you know if I do! EDITED TO ADD: Does anyone know if the nVidia Driver issue with Win 10 forced driver updates has been resolved? Or, if I update, does that mean I will have those issues that were discussed on the web between the forced drivers from microsoft instead of the PROPER drivers from nVidia? Or is it best to sit tight and wait for resolution? I do not use dual monitors so that problem won't affect me but I also heard some nVidia issues of bad flicker were also reported. I checked the Windows compatibility tool and no the GeForce GTX960M is NOT listed so for me that means it is currently unknown if compatible. This is another reason I would like to know if the OKR will still function, just in case I lose my screen during update. lol

  • Playlists Missing After Install New Hard Drive and Upgrade to Win 7

My computer needed a new hard drive and I upgraded from Win Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.
I am trying to get my Playlists back for my iTunes in my "Administrator" user account, after reinstalling iTunes and putting my music libraries back onto my computer.
(I had installed 32-bit Win7 OS myself, computer worked OK for about 1 day, then would not boot up; I took computer to shop, they said I needed new Hard Drive, and I gave them my new Win7 OS computer disks)
I am confused over whether I have 32-bit OS or 64-bit OS. They recommended installing 32-bit OS, I agreed, and believed that I had 32-bit OS installed; however, Computer / System Properties state "System type: 64-bit Operating System"
Prior to my installing Win7, I backed up the following onto my Western Digital "My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive:"
("My Administrative Account"): Users / Owner / My Music
    and
("My User Account"): Users / Yank / My Music
My "Administrative" and "User" user accounts contain different songs in iTunes.
If helpful, I could describe what is in each of these 2 backed-up music folders.
To get started, I copied both my "Owner" and "Yank" user folders in the C: User folder; however now I have "Owner," "Yank," and "Yank.Owner-Toshiba" folders in the C: User folder. I think I did this by creating a new Yank user account by creating a new account, not by my copying a folder into C: User folder. The Owner folder has a picture of a lock on the folder icon.
Because I had trouble merging My Music folders in the Owner folder, and I was confused, I copied everything that was in the Owner folder into a new folder in the Owner folder, "NEW OWNER FOLDER." I also copied my Owner Music folder into several places in my Users / Owner folder.
I also ended up changing the "iTunes Media folder location" several times, using iTunes "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / change "iTunes Media folder location". When I chose "Reset," it shows "C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media"
I've also played around with "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' "
When I open my iTunes, I have no playlists.
However, when I went to my "Yank" user account and opened iTunes for the first time, the playlists associated with that account were visible.
How do I get my playlists back on my Administrative Account, which is my main song collection and had many, many playlists?
    Thank you.

    YAY!
I didn't try shift-start of iTunes, but I DID GET MY PLAYLISTS BACK BY FOLLOWING YOUR OTHER ADVICE:
I went to my external hard drive, went to my backup at Users / Owner / My Music / iTunes / and searched for library.itl
Four files with that name were found, with different dates.
I chose the most recent, dated just a few days before I made my backup to the external hard drive.
I copied it to my computer's hard drive into the following location:
    C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes
which overwrote the file which was located there.
When I opened iTunes, ALL MY WONDERFUL PLAYLISTS WERE THERE!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SOLVING THIS FOR ME!
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW DISAPPOINTED I FELT WHEN I BELIEVED THAT I HAD LOST ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS WHICH I HAD CREATED OVER THE YEARS? Many of my playlists were composed of whole albums whose songs I had added to iTunes.
    THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH!

  • I cannot upgrade from iOS 5.-01 to 5.1 on original iPad

My wife and I both have iPads running 5.0.1. Mine is v2 and hers is v1. We both have Macs with 10.7.3 and iTunes 10.6.
When I tried upgraded to 5.1 throguh iTunes I got messages saying I could not connect to the server. A friend suggested I reboot the iPad and my Mac. I did and the upgrade went fine.
I cannot upgrade my wife's iPad, however. Even after rebooting I get an error saying iTunes cannot download the upgrade because her computer is not hooked up to the internet. It is, however. I can access the iTunes store, use Safari, and get e-mail. I then tried to download the upgrade directly through the iPad but after a few minutes I get a message saying the updte failed.
    Any suggestions?

Problem solved. I upgraded after switching a cable. Not sure why that mattered but all is fine now.
