X1900 XT, dual display: sleep problems

Today I updated my Mac Pro from an NVIDIA 7300 GT with connected BenQ and Samsung displays to an ATI X1900 XT with two 23" Cinema HD Displays. Everything works fine except one thing:
When trying to put the system to sleep it wakes up again after 2 seconds and a few seconds later the fan goes to highest speed level and stays there. The only possibility to stop the system is to shut it down completely.
The keyboard/mouse are connected to the "first" display, no other USB or Firewire device is connected.
All OS X updates are installed including EFI Update 1.1
Any ideas how to locate the problem?
Thanks in advance,
Wolfgang

Sorry for the unprecise / wrong information. The problem could be solved by removing a USB smart card reader that was attached to the USB hub of the second display.
At the old display it worked fine but the combination Cinema display / Vivanco Smart Card reader produces a signal at the USB that wakes up the Mac Pro immediately. I do not have a clue why the Mac Pro speeds up the fans afterwards but this behavior can be reproduced easily with every USB device that is removed shortly after the Mac went to sleep.
The hint for this could be found in the system.log:

  • Dual Displays - sleep delays

I had a dual disply setup (i7 iMac 27" + Dell 2408WFP) which worked great but I gave up and went back to just one after getting exremely frustrated with the long delays in the "wake up" period for the two.
The single display 27" iMac sceen wakes instantly when any key or trackpad is touched.
Dual disply - HUGE delay as an apparent communication relay bounces back and forth before the two came alive.
(Huge in this case a maybe ~3 - 5 seconds?)
I liked dual displays and would consider going back - just wondering if I was missing something or is this just "how it is" when implementing 2 screens?
Turning SLEEP or Screen Savers off is NOT an option.

  • Display Sleep problems

Whenever I use the dimmer (F1) and turn it down all the way, it only stays that way for a few minutes. Once the amount of time has passed to enable the "display sleep" under the energy saver, the screen lights up again. However, once I go to move the mouse on the trackpad to see why this has happened, the screen goes dark again as it is supposed to be. The only solution I can see to this is to turn off the sleep mode, which is frustrating because my original wish was to save the battery life. Is there some way to overcome this? I would love to be able to listen to my music without completely draining the power.

This problem is resolved with the Lion update.

  • Dual monitor sleep problem

I have dual monitors and with 10.5.1 my second monitor will not open after it has gone to sleep. I have to shut down and start over. A simple restart will not bring it back up. I have never had this problem before. Any help??

    Welcome to the Apple Forums.
In System Preferences (found under the Apple Menu in the menu bar), look at the Display pane to see if both screens are recognized by the system. Click on the Detect Displays button. This will force the system to connect to the monitor and will show you if there is an OS problem, or perhaps a hardware problem.
I keep the "Show displays in the menu bar" checked so that I can access it through the Display image in the Menu Bar at the top of the screen.
My experience is that different monitors have different capabilities of connection to the computer- some have to be "detected" every time; some connect, but have to be changed from a mirror to a span or repositioned in the arrangement pane; some just "work right"
    Good luck. Joel.

  • Dual displays cursor problem

I have a new Mac Pro and I had a 27" & 24" monitor connected to the card (Display Port, not Thunderbolt). Everything worked fine. I replaced the 24" with a new 27" (Display Port, not Thunderbolt) so now I have two 27" monitors.
The problem is that the mouse/trackpad cursor remains trapped on one screen and will not move to the other screen, nor can I move windows from one screen to another. Sometimes after rebooting, the cursor will appear on the other screen but will be trapped there as well.
I can't find anything useful on a search and looked for plist files to delete but couldn't find any that looked like it would help.
Any ideas how to cure this problem?
    Thanks, denny
    PS- Using Mountain Lion

Well, it looked right then I noticed that the white menu bar was on the wrong monitor. I dragged the one monitor to the opposite side and all is well now. What confused me was that all I had done was shut the machine down, swapped monitors and then repowered the machine. I guess I just assumed it would be OK as I've done this before and everything was OK.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Display Sleep Problem

    Hi
I have the Energy Saver preferences set to put my MacBook Pro display to sleep after 5 minutes both on battery and power adapter.  It has always worked perfectly until now.  Recently, if I just leave the MacBook on a table, the display goes to sleep but it wakes up randomly and then goes to sleep again.  This seems to then repeat itself every few seconds.
What could be causing this?  I have no peripherals connected.  Bluetooth is disabled (I do occasionally use a wireless keyboard and mouse).  I suspect that some software must be waking up the display but I don't know how to go about determining which application (if indeed that is the cause).
    Help!

Try a SMC reset and see if that changes anything.

  • Dual Display Problems - No Signal After Sleep

So, I just set up my hexacore Mac Pro with stock ram and the ATi 5870. To go along with it, I purchased two Dell U2311H monitors from Dell so that I could finally have dual displays. I then purchased two 6' minidisplayport to displayport cables from Monoprice. Also went with the Apple wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse.
Upon initial start-up, everything worked fine. The monitors needed to be calibrated, but dual display mode worked perfectly without any extra steps. I had some fun messing around for a little bit and then decided to take a break. I put the computer to sleep.
I came back 15 minutes later (couldn't stay away for long), and clicked the mouse to wake the computer back up. I heard the tower humming, but the monitors stayed black. I tapped the keyboard. Still black. Assuming it was some issue I wasn't prepared for with the wireless peripherals, I futzed around with them for a while and had no luck. Still not image on the monitors. I turned the monitors off and then back on only to get an error message explaining that the monitor was in Power Save mode. Some further exploration revealed that the monitors were allegedly getting NO SIGNAL from the computer.
Restarting didn't help any. The only thing that has "worked" is shutting down the computer and connecting a single monitor through the DVI-D cable that came with it. I can then reconnect the displayport cable and switch the input to re-establish dual displays, but this is obviously pretty annoying. It seems like I can eliminate questions with the monitors themselves or the cables. In doing some research, I've found some threads on different sites about people having similar dual display issues attributed to faulty graphics cards. I certainly hope this isn't the case, but I'm at a loss for what the problem might be. It seems odd that dual displays would work briefly only to fail after going to sleep for 15 minutes.
Sorry if this is the dumbest question ever. Is there something stupid that I'm doing wrong? Anyone have any insight?
Any guidance you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have the exact same issue. Here's the forum I've got going: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2686085&tstart=90
I called AppleCare because this issue was out of the box. Engineering wanted to capture some logger information so I ran the logger and sent it off to them.
I am running a Dell 27" via a DisplayPort to Mini-DisplayPort cable (also purchased through Monoprice) and a Dell 22" via DVI to DVI (have also tried with the DVI to DVI cable connected to an Apple DVI-MiniDisplayPort adapter and the same issue arrises). When I boot the computer with any of these cables, I get no video. Only when I boot with a Dual-Link DVI (DVI-D) cable from the 27" monitor do I get any video on screen. At this point, I can then plug in the DisplayPort to Mini-DisplayPort cable and the regular DVI (not Dual-Link) after unplugging the DVI-D cable and I get video. If I restart the computer, no problem. However, if the computer goes to sleep or if I power down and then power back up, I am back to square one with no video and have to resort to using the Dual-Link DVI cable.
Because this was DOA out of the box, they ended up just RMA'ing the machine and re-ordering my CTO Mac Pro 6-core. Still waiting for it to be built, I'll let you know how it goes on the second machine when it arrives.

  • Display sleep with dual monitor setup

I'm running a 17" studio display and a 20" studio display as a two momitor setup on a dual G5 2.0. The menu bar is on the 17". Unless I have display sleep in energy saver set to never, the 17" will go to sleep at the interval set in the preference panel, even when the system is in use. So far the only way I've found to get the display back off sleep is to put the computer itself to sleep - keyboard shortcut or by using the power button on the 17" and then wake it up.
I think this only started with 10.4.6. I can't upgrade to 10.4.7 yet - I run Avid Xpress Pro on the system and 10.4.7 gives dongle trouble. I've thrown away preference files, set and reset the sleep parameters. As it happens, I've had to reinstall the system a couple of weeks back, but the 17" studio still goes to sleep when it shouldn't.
The problem doesn't occur if the menu bar is on the 20" cinema display, but that's not the way I want it.
Anyone with the same problem,, or better a suggested solution?

finally found the solution (apple i hope your reading
this as this is a mad bug!)
you need to have the dock on the bottom of the main
screen in order to view the image on that screen.
Wierd, I have my dock on the left side of my main screen... which is to the left of my secondary screen. Perhaps you cannot have the dock in-between screens?
kgelner, how have you noticed the performance of your
card when working with aperture? Im seriously
debating upgrading mine as its just slow and annoying
I find it usable but I'm also only working with TIFF files (my camera is not supported). I am also pretty strongly thinking about going with the X800xt card, which should be at least twice as fast. Some operations (like a lot of Spot & Patch repairs combined with Shadows/Highlights) do make things a bit laggy.
I also have the 256MB version of the 9800, which I think helps with some of the larger images and operations.

  • Dual Display Problem with new MacBook Pro

    Hi All,
I just got a new MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo and a 30" Dell LCD Monitor. Both are AWESOME products, BTW. But I am having a weird issue with running both displays.
If I sleep/wake the computer so that I'm never running with dual displays, everything seems fine. However, no matter what I try, I eventually get a system hang if both displays are active at once.
For example, if I turn the MBP off, attach the monitor, and power up, the MBP will get to the login screen. As soon as it hits the logon screen, it hangs.
If I hot-plug the monitor while the system is running, it will detect the new display and activate it as a secondary desktop. But, in anywhere from 5 seconds to 15 minutes (varies each time) the MBP display will turn off and the system hangs.
To me, it seems like a video driver bug or something similar to that?
    Thanks!

To those of you that inquired, NO, I have not yet resolved this problem.
I took the laptop into the Apple store, and they decided that it needed a new logic board. Then, once they received the part, and I took the laptop in for repair, they didn't replace the logic board. The guy on the bench reset the PRAM and decided that the problem was resolved. I took it home, and within about 20 minutes the same thing happened.
When I took it back to the store, I was unable to reproduce the problem for the mac Genius.
It still does it, I I just haven't had a chance to take it back to the store to try to reproduce the problem again.

  • Download, battery, and sleep problems on macbook pro with retina display after upgrading to Mountain lion

After waiting a few days to download OS X Mountain lion, I finally installed it on my new MacBook with retina display a couple days ago. I love the interface and all the new features, but I've noticed some problems I really need to resolve. I'm constantly downloading large files and I noticed thhis change:
Before, on Lion, I could download files from Safari or the Internet and the computer would sleep whenever it was set to on energy preferences and the download would resume. This would let the computer conserve energy so the download could progress further when on battery. Now, I noticed that my computer never goes to sleep! Its set to have the display sleep in 5 minutes and the computer in 15 on both battery and when plugged in, but it never does either. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that power nap is on even when using battery. So now the Mac is constantly on when downloading something and instead of downloading a one gigabyte file that would take up 15% of my battery, it takes up 60% since it never sleeps. When I tried downloading something and then manually putting the computer to sleep, the download was interrupted and it said Wi-Fi connection lost so I have to start the download over again.
That's basically all three problems in one situation. I even put the brightness all the way on low so the screen is black when downloading, but it still uses up much more battery than before. Can someone help find a solution?

Did you try turning off power nap?

  • Dual displays problem

    Hi,
I just bought two new displays (2x BenQ FP222, 22" widescreen) to use with my new Mac Pro 2.66 (GeForce 7300 GT), but here's the problem: When only the first display is turned on the computer is fine, but when both displays are switched on the picture on both displays goes black every few seconds and then comes back.
I have connected both displays to the computer via 5-metres DVI-cables, which my dealer said would be ok. I understand that I only have the standard graphics card, but as far as I know that shouldn't be a problem unless I try to use dual 30 inch displays.
It sounds to me like it could be a problem with the computer not having enough power to run the two displays (they both use 1680x1050)? Or could it be a faulty DVI-cable?
Has someone got any idea what might be the problem?

Mac Pro Dual 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Have you updated the firmware on the nvidia to the latest? Just a thought, but to your comment about powering all the cards...... the power supply will give only 5 volt for each PCI interface rail. The monitors get their power from the AC outlet. As robust of a machine the Mac Pro is, I doubt it will have any issues powerwise even if all of the slots are full. The ATI card requires an additional power cable because it is a much faster card and requires more power than the slot it is in can give it. The nvidia card is smaller and has no fan, only a heatsink. It isn't drawing near the current that the ATI card will, and I haven't seen many, if any posts about dual displays not working on the ATI. Flickering, yes...... but not that it doesn't work. I agree with the other folks that have posted, it's a hardware issue with your video card, or the cables used to hook up the monitors, or possibly the displays are not standard in the way they use the DVI signal.... You can troubleshoot by trying your known good Apple CD on each DVI output, then place it on one DVI and try the BenQ on the other DVI. Make sure you power down in between your tests. This is to make sure you don't blow something, and the video card can reset itself to which display is hooked up. Do either of the BenQ displays work with DVI on either output?..... once you layout your results, you may see a pattern that will help you explain the problem to Apple. I think they may need to send you a replacement video card, but I'm not there to see what is happening. Playing out the scenarios you tested usually makes them pay attention, instead of calling and saying it doesn't work. They put all these issues into a database that they search when customers call with issues. Wow, have I been long-winded!
    Good luck

  • Acroread full screen problem - dual display on Linux machine

    Hi:
I am running Linux Fedora core 15 on an HP laptop that I use for presentations.  I have dual displays set up and run my presentation software (opera and acroreader)  in the external monitor in full screen mode.  This works fine for opera, but when I try to use acroreader, it only appears on the laptop's built in monitor when in full screen mode.   Any suggestions on how to get it on the external display?
    Thanks.

When you normally play iTunes on a secondary monitor (23" Cinema on the side) and then disconnect to go mobile, there's a problem - can't get video window to show up anywhere without changing preferences to have video display in iTunes window or art window. Disabling spaces, checking display, "detect displays", nothing else works.

  • Dual 2.3 Power Mac G5 sleeping problem

For sometime now my G5 has had a sleeping problem. I use evetv 500 to record tv shows. Most times I have been on the computer say 5 to 6 pm. I'll have it set to record at 7. The G5 will start up and record no problem, but the monitor will not go back to sleep, the whole system is almost locked up . I have found that the computer clock will be stuck at the time I let it sleep. If I move the mouse the clock will update, and the system will sleep.

    Dual 2.3 G5 PowerMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi,
I've experienced something similar a bit now and then. The most recent occurense of this was just a few minutes ago. Last thursday (june 21st), I set my Mac to record one show at 21.00 and one recording at 18.00 (every weekday on the 18.00 one), both recordings are one hour each. The ordinary "sleep when idle" function doesnt seem to work properly but I still set it at 15 minutes plus a scheduled sleep at 22.08. Now when just I came home the Mac was on though it shouldnt be. iStat in Dashboard gave me these figures:
    Uptime 0d 4h 22min, up since 8.35 june 21
The only reaction I got when I tried to check the sleepsettings was a message telling me that the computer was scheduled to go to sleep in 9mins 55sec's and the System Preferences panel just bounced in the dock, every app that I tried to start just bounced in the dock. When I tried to restart it I got a message, after a while, telling me that Eyetv was keeping my Mac from going to sleep and trying to force quit it didn't seem to make much change. I finally turned the Mac off by pressing the powerbutton on the front.
I got the 18.00 recording on thursday but not on friday and no 21.00 recording from thursday. I thought the scheduled sleep would override the other setting...
