X1900XT Cooler options?

I was wondering if anyone modified their CTO MacPro with this VGA Cooler:
http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=125
im not sure how much i want to test the waters with the one i purchased or look for a used X1900xt and try it on there
i just want to add extra coolness to my macpro + video card since i running a 30" Cinema Display + doing high res graphic editingand occasional video games on XP and OSX10.4.10
any suggestions?
thanks!

I must have time on my hands, but it is cold and windy outside, so:
Tested the Thermaltake TMG SL1 Dual Slot Fan installed directly over the X1900XT / Accelero S1 passive cooler. I spliced the little card power connector to the TMG, removed the 2 slot covers, and installed it. It has 3 cool blue LED's that I would immediately clip off, as you can only see them from the back of the MP case anyway. It spins quietly away, and the air coming out of the 2 slot vent is quite noticeable by putting your hand to the back of it.
I taped the Fluke thermocouple to the center of the S1 heat sink, between the fins, directly below the new case cooler fan.
I ran iTunes with full screen visualizer to give the GPU something to think about, for 20 minutes. Then with that running, opened Temperature Monitor and did a screen capture.
Powered off, waited 10 minutes, opened up the MP, and removed the Thermaltake (had to remove the X1900XT to pull the power connector, and noticed that I use the middle finger of my left hand to reach down and move the release clip upward, not the index finger.)
Powered up, ran the iTunes visualizer 20 minutes, and did another screen capture of Temperature Monitor. Here is what I found out:
1) Apple recommends you wait 15 minutes after powering down before opening the case. I now believe it - the thermocouple temperature went up 3 degrees F. immediately after powering down - no fans running! It took 10 minutes to go back down those 3 degrees. So, waiting 10 minutes will get the internal case temp back down to what it was when it was running, and an extra five minutes drops it a few degrees more - but still 20 degrees above ambient. From now on, I am going to wait the 15 minutes just to reduce any thermal shock.
2) The Thermaltake did make a difference in a wide variety of internal temps, just not very much difference. CPU temps averaged 2 degrees F cooler with it, expansion slot temp was 1 F cooler, Hard Drive temps averaged 1 degree cooler, Memory modules A2 and B2 (my 2 hottest, always) were 2 degrees F cooler, Northbridge heat sink was 1 degree cooler, and both power supply temp points were 2 degrees cooler. Interestingly, the only temp that showed absolutely no change was my themocouple temp, directly below the Thermaltake cooler! My theory there is that the Thermaltake is covering enough of the fins so that the air it removes from above the X1900XT is a wash with the covered fins.
So, it is helping to remove enough case air to make a difference in temps all over the place, but only a very small difference. I can always increase the MP fans a tiny bit more with smcFanControl and get the same cooling difference.
Oh, the themocouple temp with the sensor in the middle of the cooling fins was 100 F in both test cases. Ambient was 69F.
I'm not putting the Thermaltake back in, at least until spring when ambient will be 89F instead of 69F. Then, maybe I'll try it again.

• Portege R600 - Difference between cooling options

I have a Portege R600 with Windows 7 installed, but I guess my query is generic to all Porteges regardless of the version of Windows.
Could someone please explain to me what the different "cooling options" in the power settings actually mean? I couldn't find details anywhere.
Does battery optimized mean that the cpu fan gets activated only beyond a certain temperature? And what's the difference between cooling and maximum performance?
Is there any other way to set the cpu fan speed directly?
This is a very important point to me, because the fan of the Portege is terrible, too noisy, to the extent that I am considering return the laptop unless I find a solution. Sometimes it sounds like a Ferrari engine at a billion rpms!
Thanks!

This points to:

which mentions that:
"If the sound of the CPU fan seems too loud, a setting that optimizes battery life will also cause the CPU fan to turn on less frequently."
However, my problem was quite the opposite: optimizing battery life causes the fan to stay off most of the times but to make the noise of a Ferrari engine at max speed when it activates. Optimizing performance, instead, means the fan is almost always on but barely noticeable, and never makes the disturbing Ferrari-like noise.
Maybe it's just me, but that kind of noise prevents me from using the laptop and would have cause me to return it had I not found a solution. I simply think that it's such a big potential problem that a clear solution should have been explained in huge letters, all the more so because the solution is very banal. It might be just my opinion, but judging by reviews and comments on forums, I'd say it isn't.

• Z800 secondary cooling duct part number for water cool option.

Hi
I need the part number dor the secondary cooling duct on a z800 it mounts to the main airflow cover using the water cooling option. It can be seen in this pdf on page 5 bottom right corner. You can see it attached.
http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/downloads/Increasing-thermal-efficiency-with-liquid-cooling.pdf
If you do not know the part number a serial number of a pc with the item in question would also work.
thanks

• Cooling Options? Mac Pro Heating Up Room

Hi there. The AC in the house cannot keep my office cool (12ft by 15ft), it always hovers around 82 degrees while the rest of the house is 72. If the computer is off the room is fine.
I'm looking for options to cool my Mac Pro and RAID array.
1) I've seen some units (an Autodesk Smoke..) encased in a large temperature controlled, refrigerator-like unit. Is there a name for this? Any links?
2) Would it help to use a fan software? I've heard mixed things about them. Although I'm not sure if this would cool the room..
I tried a standalone AC unit but I didn't have a way for the exhaust to exit so it actually heated the room.
Any thoughts/ ideas?
Thank you in advance.

Nope. AC window unit is best, or central air and direct it through the vents.
I have never, ever, in nearly 4 yrs heard anything 'negative' about SmcFanControl - it could and should be a must for any Mac Pro - all it can do is help prevent heat from building inside the case and can't do anything for the room (and yes my low end 1,1 does heat a small room after a few hours).
In fact last summer, I felt it was time to build a PC to run Windows and keep things running cooler, even though it is a much more powerful system.
In one house, I had a small storage room that I ran extension cables from and left cold in winter and had its own AC in summer. I thought of drilling into the basement and running DVI and USB extensions also!

• Northbridge cooler options for K7N2G-L

I was considering if I should replace the stock passive solution on my K7N2G-L northbridge with something active. I don't currently use the onboard video, but will when I get my second system back together. It looks like a Chrome Orb or Vantec Iceberg are the only real options I can find. Are they any better than stock? I can't find anything useful about IGP cooling solutions in google.com. Is there a better cooling solution out there? Or should I leave well enough alone?

I put a 40mm Sunon 6800 rpm fan on the Heatsink of theK7N2-L a few weeks ago and it works very well. The hardest thing I found to complete the projest was finding screws that would take a bite of the NB heatsink fins. I hadn't suffered any instability issues but had noticed that the NB sink was noticably warm to the touch with my FSB set at 200 so I thouhgt what the heck, the fan was just laying around collecting dust anyhow so I slapped it on.

• XServe cooling options

I have an XServe G5 sitting in a half-height cabinet with doors front and back. There are a couple of other tower servers sitting on the floor, but plenty of empty space inside. My XServe, though, is getting excessively toasty - the fans are always very loud, and the system light comes on at least once a day saying that CPU1 has exceeded its temperature threshold (if only for half a second or so).
At the moment it's hopping between 5-30% CPU use (doesn't usually go much above that, except at backup time). CPU temps are 76/65C; CPU1 blower is at 14,000 RPM and CPU2 is at 5,000RPM.
What I'm wondering is, how can I get the thing to cool down? CPU1 always seems much toastier than CPU2. I'm interested in any way of getting the server a to cool down a little - I'm planning to put more rack servers in the cabinet, which will only make it warmer. There's a space on the roof to fit a fan, but that'll just blow down onto the top of the XServe which isn't all that helpful. The door on the cabinet is unfortunately glass, so no air will be going in when it's closed, but I keep it and the rear door ajar.
I'm pretty new at this lark and don't really know much about cabinet standards (I got mine from BlackBox UK). What are the usual ways of cooling the kit down cheaply (bearing in mind it's only 3-5 servers, not a whole rack full)? Is it better to have air blowing up, down or sideways? Are there any good (preferably UK) suppliers of cooling equipment? Any cooling/airflow hints and tips would be greatly appreciated...
Dual XServe G5, MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4)

Doors are unfortunately not vented, **** things. I can probably find a way of removing them but then a) there's physical access to the server and b) it's **** noisy. Replacement doors would be nice, but again, I don't really know where to look for them, and whether they're standard sizes. I'm considering sticking a few fans on the roof of the box sucking air from the bottom and blowing it out the top - is this a sensible sort of idea? The cost of buying a new cabinet will probably be a bit much - I'm trying to coll the insides down in the cheapest posssible way.

• Best silent fan cooling options??

any body got ideas on whats the best one to get thats does not put a hole in your pocket ??
is there anyway of controlling fans speedon vga card??

I happen to think that the Zalman 7000 AlCu ($34.00 US) CPU fan Is the Most quiet CPU Fan on the Market today (Due to it's hard wired speed control) and it is also big enough 96mm to keep a CPU cool at minimum RPM'S..And it is Powerful enough to Keep Overclocked CPU'S Cool too ...I leave mine on 100% Speed all the Time (Due to my CPU being OCed to 3.6 from 3.2) but even at 100% the Max rpm of the Fan is 2,700 RPM'S..........As far as Controling the Fan on a VGA Card, well as far as all stock setups to date, the answer is No.......There are some Aftermarket VGA Coolers that come with Variable Control fans on them though....I believe "Thermaltake" Makes one.................Sean REILLY875

• Best Cooling Options

Sorry to Bother All again,
I kno that my PSU is shite and I am working around a replacement, but my processor heat on PC Alert 4 is showing it in the 50's I am hoping this is incorrect as I have removed my big Cooler Master Jet and inserted the OEM Heat Sink and Fan because of the power output.
I have applied Thermal Paste onto the processor which is deisgned for this type of one, and I am shocked to see the heat so high....
Is there another Heat Testing software I can use? to get a 2nd opinion.. at the moment I have taken side off and put my desk fan on max and allowing that to blow some cold air in there to help... guess wot it aint doing jack shite.... HELP is again needed.
I will put my coolermaster back in when I know I have the power to support it, but the OEM fan should do a decent JOB!

Most advice I have seen say 50's is ok.
Maybe you got too much or too little heat sink compound on it.
If it is temporary, you could install the coolermaster, disconnect a case fan, leave the side off.
Many advise http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ to display cpu temperatures, put I think it uses the same sensor.  I do not think you can get another sensor where it would be useful.

• Z820 - Added Liquid Cooling Option

Hi,
I upgraded my Z820 with the liquid cooled CPU heatsinks.
Apparently the 'fan cooling profile' is based on the hardware configuration, do I need to do anything else or will the system detect the changes at boot time?
Reset the CMOS for example?
Thanks,
Rob

Hi,
It's your machine, out of warranty, you can do what ever you like, you can remove the whole case and blow cool air to the machine, you can drill dozen holes to get better air flow, you can pour chilled water thru all corners of the machine ..... and this will reduce 5 or 10 degrees. The question: do you want to do that ?
Regards.

• MSI K9A Platinum north bridge cooler options

Hi just got mt MSI board and wondering if any one has opinion on updateing northbridge south bridge coolers also planning to put board in a HTPC case any opinions on useing zalman 8000 cpu cooler and should i go crossfire with my x1650xt video card now or wait for the new ati cards

My suggestion to you: leave it as it is. This chipset doesn't get warm at all, so why go through all the hussle of changing the cooler?

• CPU and NB cooling queries...

Hello to all...
I'm wondering if anyone has removed the MSI lightshow heatsink and fan combo from the northbridge chip and put on something else, say like the Zalman NB coolers? I was thinking of the ZM-NB47J cooler but as the mobo has those slots in the board for the hooks rather then holes for punch throughs, i wasn't sure if anyone had got it to work.
i was thinking that the crossbar from the stock heatsink and fan might be able to work with the Zalman, but wanted to check with other users first.
As for CPU coolers, i just changed from my Antec Sonata case to a Overture and now my Zalman 6500 cpu heatsink and fan won't work as the fan mounts to the PCI rail and there's not enough height in the case for that. I figure i'll try a 7000 series...but there seem to be mixed answers on whether or not it will fit properly  as the socket isn't centered within the mounting brackets. Any help there would be appriciated.
Your thoughts, comments, ideas are appriciated.
Thanks.
G.

Yeah, that combo works well for me.  I haven't tried many other cooling options, so there may be better options out there.  There's a new video card heatsink similar to the Zalman with two heatpipes and a Swiftech CPU heatsink with heatpipes.  If I had to do it over again, I'd give those a try.
If your goal is low noise (like mine), you can't beat the undisputed champion of low-noise CPU heatsinks - the beautiful Heatlane Zen.  I used this heatsink in another PC and it performs quite well.  With a case that moves enough air, the Heatlane Zen is worth a try.

• Despite setting "open my home page" in the Tools Options General Startup, Firefox insists on a blank tab.

I'm using Firefox 4.0 with TabMixPlus and AdBlock Plus on Windows XP Home, SP3. When I log in as a local administrator in Windows, new tabs open correctly and display a home page, but when my non-admin users (mother-in-law!) run Firefox, the application insists on a blank tab. It also shows a bizarre "nested" view with two sets of Windows title bars stacked at the top of the screen.
There's a weird orange "Firefox" dropdown menu atop the second one, and it's full of cool options... none of which does a thing to change this behavior.
Short of giving my mother-in-law admin privileges, how can I get Firefox to respect her GUI choices?

New tabs open by default a blank tab, so it looks that you have an extension that opens the home page instead.
You can look at one of these extensions:
* NewTabURL : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/newtaburl/
* New Tab Homepage : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage/
Quote: It also shows a bizarre "nested" view with two sets of Windows title bars stacked at the top of the screen.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
In Firefox 4 Safe mode disables extensions and disables hardware acceleration.
* Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
See:
* Troubleshooting extensions and themes
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See:
* Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

• Auto speaker option

Some years ago, before I had an iPhone 4, a friend showed me some cool options his iPhone 3G had. One very handy feature was that when he had a call and moved the phone away from his face it automatically went on speaker. I want to use this option on my iPhone 4, but can't find how to turn it on.

I asked him if his phone was jailbroken, but it wasn't. He also told me he never had this option on his iPhone, so I guess it must be my imagination. Seems like a good idea. Would be very handy. As far as I know an iPhone can detect if your face is near or not.

• Hack to restore the option to play in Finder window?

I know the Finder no longer has the option to play a song or movie within the window (truly within). It was a super-cool option in OS 10.4.11 and before. Now all I have is "QuickLook" that only plays when the chosen Finder window is front. I can no longer go to a different Finder window or glance at a web page, because that cancels the playing of QuickLook. Does anyone know of a hack that can restore the "play QuickTime type media file in background from a Finder window" process?
If this got too difficult for the newbies, don't fret. This is a feature you may never have seen if you haven't owned a pre-Leopard Mac.

Try logging out, then back in or restart your machine.

• Arctic Cooler Silencer 1 for Radeon 9800

Anyone know where I can find a Arctic Cooler Silencer 1 for Radeon 9800? Or do you know if the Acceleron s2 will fit in a G4 Sawtooth with this v card?
Thanks

Hi-
Just don't let the fan get dirty. The 9800 is a hot card, and too much heat is bad. Since you also have a processor upgrade, you are adding lots of heat. The heat also affects the PSU, because it is all removed through the PSU, and hot air doesn't cool well. Hot PSU's, don't produce good power.
Another cooling option (and a good one) is a PCI slot fan that exhausts to the outside of the tower.
This Thermaltake has really good airflow, and will help cool your entire system.
