X200 Audio - Hiss and Distortion

i have taken delivery of a new X200, and must say i am very disappointed in the audio subsystem. when listening to music in WMP through the audio jack with Shure SE420 headphones, there is a buzz/hiss/distortion when music plays that is very very annoying. what you would expect from an MP3 player that is given away as a promotional item, but not from a Thinkpad.
The audio is unacceptable for long flights.
Is this common with the Connexant chip? if so, Lenovo ought to source elsewhere.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Unfortunately, this isn't about audiophile pickiness. I've had two other laptops in the past year and two handheld computers that all provide much more acceptable audio quality on the headphone out than my Thinkpad T500. I just used the headphone jack on it for the first time within the last week, and the buzzing was immediately noticeable.
I've seen another post online by a T500 user with the same problem we both have. This disappoints me because it means that even a warranty claim may not solve it.

  • QuickTime 7 Audio stutters and distorts

When I watch videos with QuickTime 7 the picture quality is perfect but audio is stuttery, distorted and unlistenable. I have Windows XP Pro.
Haven't found a discussion or Apple Support topic that addresses this problem, however from related issues have tried adjusting streaming rate and Wave Out settings in QT 7 with no joy.
I uninstalled and reinstalled QT version 6.5.2 which plays everything absolutely fine, problem solved. However iTunes will not now work/open as error message comes up - it requires QT version 7.0.3 or later.

Oh, I forgot: the strangest of all is that itunes works perfectly well even though it supposed to rely on quicktime...

  • Ios7 update audio is hissing and static. Please help me get rid of this noise so I may enjoy my audio on my iPad

Ever since the ios7 update my audio is hissing and has static. Please help me get rid of this noise so I may enjoy my audio on my iPad

Just for the record, this is what I wrote to Apple feedback:
(If anyone really knows what the problem is, please let us know.)
    Apple iPad mini. Re: Hiss
Hi. I am one of the very unhappy people who can't use the iPad for recording since getting ios7.  The apple forum is replete with stories like mine: ios6 recording was quiet - ios7 is noisy. I have tried every suggestion. Why won't anybody at apple tell us what the problem is? I have been using macs since 1986. All I want to do is record my songs on my iPad. Unfortunately for me, I recently brought my iPad-mini refurbished so there is no warranty. If I had bought it new I would be at the Genius Bar until I got the problem fixed. Did I mention how unhappy I am?  Here are the specs: 1st gen iPad mini running ios7. Recording onto Multitrack DAW with a Samson Go mic to a 30-pin USB camera adapter, into an apple brand lightening adapter into iPad mini. Everything works fine except for the HISS.

  • My audio is really slow and distorted whenever I try and play a video sent through an emails

The audio of any video Link in my emails that I receive, when clicked on to play it, the vocals are very slow and distorted. It sounds like the monotone sound of vocals being distorted to make it unrecognizable. It has been this way ever since I downloaded and installed it.

Currently there is no Flash support for Firefox on Android. Fret not though, there are mobile developers working on front-end Flash support currently and if all follows through you will see Flash support in the near future in a future release of Firefox Aurora.

  • Mystery audio performance changes and distortion

I listen to a lot of rock, hard rock, and heavy metal on my 80GB Video iPod. In the past two months, I’ve been having problems with distortion and equalization. I do have the latest iTunes and iPod software updates installed and I have re-instaled iTunes and re-initialized the iPod.
Originally, I was using the iPod earbuds and upgraded to vModa Vibes. Most of my music sounded great with an EQ setting of “Dance” with the vModas.
After a while, I started to experience distortion and loss of detail, especially on the left side (crackling). I thought I had damaged the vModa Vibes, so I purchased a pair of Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro Earphones.
The Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro earphones sounded terrible with no highs or midrange detail and way too much low range. They seemed to distort easily and overload in the-mid range if there was a lot guitars playing (drowning the details out). I tried all sorts of EQ settings to no avail. The problems remained, even on treble boost, but I didn't have a problem specific to the left side.
I returned the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro earphones and switched back to the vModa Vibes for a while and finally decided, on the recommendation of a friend, to try the Bose TriPort IE earphones.
The Bose TriPort IE earphones were much better than the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro earphones, but still lacked high frequency and mid-range detail as compared to the vModa Vibes.
While switching back and forth between the vModas and the Bose earphones, the sound performance (or equalization) seemed to change at random, even though I kept the EQ set to off.
At one point, the vModas suddenly had incredible bass, while maintaining the other performance characteristics, with the EQ still set to off. Later, I played the same song again, and the bass was normal (all I did was charge the battery with the Apple USB AC adapter).
I’ve been using the vModas again for about a week now, and every time I listen to the same song, it plays differently, sometimes great, sometimes with extra bass, sometimes muddled and distorted. The same thing happens with Bose TriPort IEs, except they aren’t as clear as the vModas.
The performance issues seem to somewhat track battery charging (i.e. – after I charge the iPod up, audio performance changes and it sometimes improves as the battery drains).
I figure that either there is a hardware problem with the iPod or there is some type of EQ virus going around.
Anyone having similar problems or have a solution??

I went out and bought a 2 GB iPod Nano and loaded some songs onto it.
Everything sounds great with the vModa Vibe earphones so I guess my 80 GB video iPod might have a few twisted transistors.
I'll have to try to clear out the 80 GB video iPod and reinitialize/restore it again to see if it corrects the problem.

  • Importing Alg Audio & Video with distorted audio, how to improve sound now.

Been using iMovie & Quicktime to import Analog A/V. This last project I imported the movie into iMovie. The sound has lots of echo and distortion. Can someone tell me what would be the best iLife program to use for audio correction.
Can you also help me with a jump start on some of the best quick corrections for distorted sound, echo & hiss. I would like to restore the audio as best as I can with the iLife programs.
For the record I am also interested in turning stereo audio into surround sound.
Help for my rookie self would be much appreciated as I am currently in a tight time crunch.
    Many thanks.

  • Logic Pro 9.1.7 + Imac 2010 + 10.7.4 + Firewire = Audio Error and Solution.

    Hi all,
This post is the end of a weeks long hair pulling, to save other people the pain of my past week, here is a quick rundown of the issue and the solution that for us at least worked.
All the software is legit and fully updated btw, before people ask.
Logic Pro 9.1.7 on 2010 Imac on 10.6.x, Refx Nexus, Sylenth plus many other VST's and Au's, Mackie Pro + Extender, 2 Midi Keyboards (Oxygen 49 and Alexis 49)  and with a M-Audio 410 external soundcard running 10.1.3 driver, all working.. only issue we had was when copying midi between tracks into differing plugins the midi would corrupt the plugin requiring a restart of Logic.
This error we later discovered was due to midi automation for plugins being copied over, but that is not this issue.
Updated OS from 10.6 to 10.7.4 by way of 10.7.4 Combi Update. Removed M-Audio Drivers and then installed 10.7.4,
Installed brand new GRAID 4TB external disk (Raid 0 at 64kb block sixe) and connected M-Audio 410 via daisy chain.
Installed M-Audio Drivers, all ok.. at first..
Graid is 800, M-Audio is 400.. Connected as Imac -> GRaid -> Maudio
At first, its good, no issues.
Copied over a whopping 550GB off Imac onto external..  then later on, rebooted mac and started working on music.
Ran Logic Pro  (64bit mode), whilst using Midi with Nexus we discovered the Audio at first was ok, but quickly over time degraded to where the sounds started becoming distorted, the more we went on, the more the distortion increased, after a while the midi notes were just sounding awful.
    Rebooted mac
Started using Logic again, not 1 minute in, External drive and M-Audio disconnected themselves from the Mac.
    Rebooted
Hard drive now seen, no M-Audio.
Now though, even using Itunes or Quicktime or VLC on any mp3 via internal soundcard, quality was.. well terrible. Within 2 seconds of hitting play, you knew it was bad.
Shutdown, removed external drive from chain, rebooted Mac -> M-Audio
M-Audio now seen, sound quality dreadful, shutdown Mac, rebooted without M-Audio, sound still awful just on Internal audio.
Time passes, I smoke too much, prod and poke and eventually reach for the install media
(Lots of shutdowns and restarts in next bit, after each line, also carefully reset and tested every Audio setting.)
    Removed M-Audio driver
    Installed 10.7.4
    Installed M-Audio
    All good again.
Later, as a test, connected External drive on its own, no M-Audio
    All good.
Second test, added External Drive plus chain to M-Audio
Not good, M-Audio seen but even though sound bars showing on M-Audio software, no sound out to mixer
Removed External Drive from Chain, M-Audio now straight to Mac.
    All BAD; sound was terrible,
    Disconnected M-Audio
Playing any Mp3 via internal Audio, terrible..
Whatever happened, has thrown the entire Audio system into a mess, again!.
    Removed M-Audio driver.
    Reinstalled 10.7.4
    Reinstalled M-Audio Driver
All good, on internal or external Audio
    Disconnected M-Audio
    Reconnected External Drive Only
    Drive OK, Internal Sound OK.
    Removed External drive
    Reconnected M-Audio
    All ok, internal or External.
    Ok, Final conclusion.
When the M-Audio (400FW) is connected to Mac via External Drive (800) the Audio is knackered from that point onwards on 10.7.4, removing M-Audio drivers and re-installing makes no difference, even the Internal Sound is knackered.
Only solution at this point, remove M-Audio driver, reboot, reinstall 10.7.4, reboot, reinstall M-Audio Driver, reboot.
    Then its all good again.
My guess is this, and I am probably wrong but it is all I can think of.
When the M-Audio is daisychained the Mac changes a setting somewhere, probably to adjust for high latency, at this point it is written somewhere (either as a file or as DSP bios setting) that is not being reset.
This is why it is completely broken until 10.7.4 is re-installed at which point whatever setting it is that was changed, is reset.
This is all I can think of, I have posted this so that if someone else in the weeks ahead has a similar issue, it will save you the stress and late nights I had this past week.
    Take care all.

I was seeing the same problem... I'm a new Logic user, switching from DP, and so it was a minty fresh install of Logic Pro 9.1.7 under ML.
It turned out to be a third party graphics driver that was screwing up some internal process:  specifically, the dirver for AirDisplay, an iOS app that lets you use an iPad as a portable monitor.  When I removed the driver, the problem cleared up instantly, and I have done 9 hour sessions in Logic since then without a single hiccup.
If you're running a third party driver, remove it, repair permissions and see if the problem clears up.

  • 10.9.2 Audio problems (and "reportcrash" stuck)

Since updating ive been having problems. My MBox2 has been rendered useless. The audio from both daw and sytem is distrorted and garbled when it does work. I reinstalled the latest drivers, I repaired permissions and disk and even reinstalled the system; no dice, still fustratingly distorted audio. I don't know what else to do, I need this to work. Even though the built in line out I've been getting these horrible pops(since 10.9.1) Also now VLC hangs for a while on launch and causes "reportcrash" in the activity monitor to constantly use over 100%cpu and force quitting only causes it to respawn, I have to restart the system. While I'm glad my mail now works again, I wish I could revert back to 10.9.1. I'd happly take mail issues over the loss of my audio interface and production workflow.

    Sorry, forgot to mention -
Our Windows PC (AirParrot installed) can still mirror to ATV. So can our IPhones
IPhone, Android tablet, Windows PC can all still connect to/access files on LaCie CloudBox.

  • T400 audio is sometimes distorted/grainy...

My T400 is pretty good, except that every so often, the sound goes suddenly distorted, or sounds as if there were a loose wire in the chain... the sound just BREAKS up and starts being unstable.
This will go away sometimes when I reboot.
This will go away sometimes when I mere move the computer from place to place.
The movement thing makes me thing it IS a loose connection somewhere, or perhaps a bad sound chip.
Has ANYONE experienced this before?  If I were to tell Lenovo about this, what do you think they would do with it (it's still under warranty)?

Tim, I guess I'm going to join you on your thread, as your problem seems to be closest to what I'm experiencing. The other threads I've been on (i.e. http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=16642) seem to be describing a more serious and continuous problem, as opposed to something that comes and goes.
My problem (as you read in the linked thread) only occurs from time to time and fairly randomly. Its a skip/skipping in audio streams. I wouldn't describe it as grainy, just an interruption or stuttering in the audio. I can only be assured it will occur at or near startup (often the Windows startup sound breaks up), while opening and closing the lid or if the LCD turns off with power settings, and (oddly enough) while playing Windows solitare. It tends to occur more while graphics-intensive things are going on, but not always. I have tried updating and rolling back drivers, and performed a factory reinstall of Windows without luck.
BTW Tim, did you try running the DPC latency program I spoke of in the linked tread? I'd be interested to see if your system looks similar to mine in that respect (it doesn't require any kind of install, its just an executable).
Here's my system idle (with no audio skips), and after closing and reopening the lid (first red bar while closing, other two while opening), respectively:
The idle latencies are sad by themselves as my 5-year-old desktop looks like this:
Also, what's your system's model number? I'm curious how similar our hardware is.

  • Sound clicking and distortion with X

Anyone else having sound clicking and distortion with their X-Fi Card? Its rare in most games, but I have a couple games where its very common Eve-Online for example. I have a X-Fi Fatalty FPS.

Using Asio4All will introduce a higher latency than using Creative X-Fi ASIO / Bit-Matched -mode, so the later is recommended. If you get distortion make sure that your volume is not turned up to max, it should be around 0db in the mixer, which corresponds to about 80%. If you get cracks/pops then it's due to the bad performance of the ASIO drivers of the X-Fi. The latest beta also says to remove cracks/pops and some distortion problems in audio creation mode, maybe try them.
Again, here is a list of real latencies as measured on my own system, using the latest stable driver (not the beta one):
    Rate = sample-rate
Comp = latency compensation in ms (by how much the real latency differs from what the application/driver reports
Low = lowest no of buffers (in samples) that I was able to use
Real = real measured latency (in contrast to what the application/drivers reports)

  • Hisses and pops in both Final Cuts

    Hey guys,
I've been having some weird problems. Since I upgraded from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro, all my video (both rendered and exported to various formats) have hisses and pops in the audio. The problem now also occurs in Express. Did an audio codec get damaged or something?
By the way, I'm simply a beginner. I'm working as an intern, and haven't worked with video all too much.
    Can anyone help me?

The MP3 thing does help a lot. Fixed some other files by converting the audio up front. But in many cases the problem still continues to exist, even after re-installing. For example when importing video files of different formats. when rendered and played, the sound completely disappears for a fraction of a second every couple of seconds.

M-Audio have released a statement about their USB2 devices and connectivity to USB3 ports
M-Audio USB devices are not qualified for use on USB 3.0 ports at this time.  If you are experiencing problems such as pops, clicks, crackles, dropouts, and distortion, or if your device is not recognized or drops offline, make sure your device is connected to a USB 2.0 (or USB 1.1) port.

  • How to remove digicam audio hiss?

I've decided to put in some of the 640X480 30fp movies I took on my canon IXUS700 into iMovie
Resolution is fine but audio hiss at the high end is really bad
What settings can I use to remove it?
Tried using audio noise remover but doesn't seem to apply to all clips? not sure how to use it...
    Any tips welcome
    Thanks
    Jason

    Hi Jason
In iMovie HD 6 there is some rudimentary sound tools. You might try the
equalizer and take down the high frequencies.
    alt. 1 (but costly)
    a. Extract sound
    b. export this sound clip as .aiff
    c. buy SoundSoap™ and run it
    d. import back and match this new sound + silece out the old soundfile.
alt. 2 (may be even more costly)
    a. get FinalCutExpress HD 3.5. The soundtools here are near to professional.

  • Audio Playback and Certain Games

Hello, i just upgraded to 7.0 the day it came out and ive had this problem since day one. i have tried to change ALL settings i can think of on my audio card and on itunes but it doesnt help.
Whenever i play video games such as World of Warcraft, Empire Earth II and Call of Duty 2, the audio file either timestamps faster or slows down followed by scratching and distortion. I quit the game and the sound problem continues. I have to restart itunes for it to go away.
I did not have this problem in previous versions and i am wondering what solutions there might be. Am i forced to go back to Winamp for audio pleasures?

Same.... Now I can't listen to any of my music in iTunes whilst playing on the World of Warcraft, yet before the update it worked fine? Now the music just sounds like it's skipping back and forth :S
Just got back from my friends who seemed to also develop playback problems with the new iTunes, yet the music was working fine minutes before the upgrade?! Both of us have pretty new PC's so I can't imagine that it's the pc's :S
Any ideas? Or can we have the old version back?
