X200 auto-update BIOS upgrade failed? system no longer boots

Hi,
I've had an X200 for around 7 months now and just did an auto-update earlier today. One of the items was a BIOS update, so I thought what the heck, it should be fine, always has been before. The update completed correctly and shuw down for reboot as planned.
The system now no longer boots. Nothing at all happens. When I press the power button, no matter whether with AC supply or on battery, the following happens:
- num lock, caps lock, HDD and 'power on' lights light up for a second or so then go off again
- they come back on again for another second, and off again
- then only the bluetooth light and the 'power on' light remain lit, and nothing else happens
It seems pretty fried to me. What can I do? I'm in severe despair! :'(
Thanks in advance for your help,
Phil

Hans;
Thank you for the reply.  Say hiya to Amelia for me.  Does this mean you're an alien?
Ok, I tried using bootable CD and no go.
I don't really have a simpler graphics card around to try that.  So that test may not happen.
I can try with one dimm when I get home (I'm at work atm.)
I also thought about putting the drive into another system and will try that also later today or tomorrow morning.
D-Bracket:  I will have to watch that again.  It really didn't make sense to me as the lights went through a lot of the steps then came to a halt at what I think was BIOS Sign on.  Someone did suggest to me that I might have a virus, which may be why the second hard drive failed eventually.  But I'm not sure about that and not sure what can be done about that unless clearing CMOS would take care of it.
So, any new thoughts?

  • XServe Upgrade failed -- system no longer accessable

I was upgading our XServe G5 running 10.4.11 to Leopard using a remote install (no video card). I accessed the system using ARD and ran the install, which of course reformats the drive. When it finished I got a pop-up window saying the installation failed. I clicked ok (my only option) and that is the last I have seen of the machine. It has disappeared from the network. Our router doesn't have the mac address in its arp table.
It looks like the only potential method of recovery is connect via the serial port and see what commands are available to try and resurrect this thing from the dead.
    Has anyone seen this before?
    Thanks

Just to Follow-up how the system was fixed.
    1. Attached a keyboard to the system
    2. Brought a old G4 laptop out of retirement and connected it the XServe G5 firewire 400 port (So that the correct processor dependent packages were picked up in the installation)
    3. Power cycled the Xserve and held down the "t" key during the boot.
    4. Went through the installation process using the firewire as the target disk.
    5. After the reboot, connected to the ethernet with a cross-over (turned out that the wrong ethernet got configured -- of course the XServe had the interfaces configured for the G4 laptop)
    6. Ran ARD in bonjour mode to find the self-assigned IP address and configured the laptop ethernet for that network.
    7. Configured the static IP address on the XServe - connected it back on the network
    8. Ran the leopard updates.
In all a very ugly experience, but I put this out so that others don't go through the same.

  • T42 BIOS Upgrade fails - laptop just restarts

I tried to upgrade the BIOS in a T42, without success (from 3.05 to 3.23).
The BIOS upgrade program asks four questions, then starts -- but the laptop does immediately reboot. No change is done to the BIOS.
What can be the cause, and what might be the remedy?

    Welcome to the forum!
    Two things to check:
    a) Is the BIOS locked or you are able to make changes to the settings?
    b) Is BIOS updating by users enabled?
    Good luck.

  • Bios update hung up, now system does not boot

    Hi,
I just got my new system 2 says ago and installed a win 8.1 on it. My pc froze at random so I checked the website and saw that there was a bios update saying windows 8 users should update.
I downloaded the file, ran it and it hung up in the middle, I left it for about an hour and it was still stuck there...I reset the pc and boom, it wont boot up. It just gives 2 consecutive beeps every 5-10 seconds or so. Is my mobo dead?  Please help! I JUST bought this case...
    EDIT:
Sorry I was so upset that I even forgot to mention my mobo model:
    Mobo: 990FXA-GD80
    Bios version: I don't know!
    CPU: AMD 8350
    PSU: 630 thermaltake
    HDD: 1 TB seagate
    RAM: 8 gb kingstone
    VGA: Sapphire 280X

msi have been told about Live update BIOS Updates being bad many times but they keep it in  !
    you have 3 options!
1: have a shop that can do SPI BIOS flashes to direct flash the BIOS chip to revive the board!
2: RMA it to MSI for them to re-flash the board!
    3: get a new board!
1+2 or the cheapest routes to take! 3 is more expensive!
(DO NOT USE LIVE UPDATE its dangerous as it does BIOS flashes in a uncontrolled environment (Windows) as there is other data and processes active) <-- if you do use live update just use the download function only and perform BIOS flashes in M-Flash, DOS or using the forum flasher as there much safer!

  • BIOS upgrade failed screen blank now

    Following is the problem:
Problem started when :- Think Vintage pop up to update BIOS and I said

Now I am getting blank screen Power , battery, (Z) indicators are working (Some sound from drive if I put cd ).

I brought laptop T61 -7658-cto  from USA and now I am
in UK and the notebook is not booting. I try to contact your technical
    contacts but no reply.
Is there a way to fix this problem without sending it to US
    Thanks in advance
    Dijo

that would probably require a motherboard replacement, not sure whether depot can reflash your bios. Since your machine is a CTO then you would have to send it back to USA for service. Call Lenovo service in USA log a service call, then courier the machine back to the depot, after fixing it they will courier it back to you i think.

  • [SOLVED] After pacman update, system no longer boots

Updated pacman packages, and half-way through the upgrade proces fails (it mentions not being able to find package-control).  Upon investigating, I notice no programs are working.  I ls /usr/bin and it is empty!  In a panic, I restart the machine, and it no longer boots up.
My boot is on sda3 and /root is sda5.
When bash starts up, it loads the kernel fine, and then after a second it panics and exclaims: "No init found. Try passing init=bootarg".
I load up my trusty Arch livecd and fsck the partitions.  Fsck claims both partitions are clean.  I am able to mount them and examine the file structure: all files look like they are there.  I then try to chroot the mounted partition (sda5, my /root), and get the error that "/bin/bash" is not found, even though it is there in the correct directory.  Not sure what to do now.
My grub entry, which has always worked fine prior to this:
    legacy_kernel '/linux344-ck' 'acpi_osi=Linux' 'root=/dev/sda5' 'rootfstype=ext4' 'init=/sbin/init' 'pcie_aspm=force' 'acpi_backlight=vendor' 'i915.i915_enable_rc6=1' 'i915.i915_enable_fbc=1' 'i915.lvds_downclock=1' 'ipv6.disable=1' 'i915.semaphores=1' 'modprobe.blacklist=bluetooth,uvcvideo' 'ro'
    legacy_initrd '/initramfs-linux-fallback.img' '/initramfs-linux-fallback.img'
UPDATE: solved issue.  I didn't read the news.  Upgrading via pacman broke my system because of this.  Now I know!  System is running smooth again.

Huh. I guess the problem was a couple of stale and crusty {,f}getty .service files, and an obsolete slim.service file I created a while back.
Removing them fixed my problem, although tty1 still shows boot messages (not a problem, and may not even be "new" behaviour)
    Cheers Tomegun.

  • Keep getting auto updates for printer which I no longer have.

I uninstalled my canon inkjet printer.  At least I believe I did - it doesn't come up when I run a search on Finder.  However I keep getting auto updates for it, which I would like to stop getting.  I may be slow but can't figure out how to do this.... thanks.

Try going to the hard drive level Library/Printers and delete the Canon folder there.

  • System no longer boots

Hello all.  System will not boot and before I go spending more money on pointless items, I was hoping to get some feedback, please.
Here are current specs on system:
    MSI K8T Neo2 FIR - AMI BIOS 9.4  Athlon 64 X2 4600+ PIB
    Antec NeoPower 480 +5V/38A +12V1/18A +12V2/15A +3.3V/30A
Kingston Value Ram 2x512 Matched Pair DDR400
    CD-R/RW & DVD+RW  WD 250g IDE
    BFG 7800GS OC  Sony SDM-HS94P 19" LCD
    Audigy 2  XP Pro
The upgrades on this system include the X2 and the graphics card.  I know, I know, the power supply may very well be the issue, but please let me detail what's happened and if everyone still thinks the PSU is it, I'll go for a new one.
Everything ran fine for at least a month.  Most resource hungry app I run is probably EQII.  Towards the end of last week I had a couple of complete crashes during game play and then on Saturday morning the system failed to boot.  I do have power as the case fans, CPU fan and GPU fan and various lights do go on.  It seemed like a hard drive failure to me, so I got a new one (Best Buy! OUCH! the price we pay if we want it that day) and it started up great.  I got windows loaded on the new drive, updated everything and was playing and working fine.  This was Saturday night and Sunday morning.  Sunday afternoon...not happening.  I'm back to a blank screen and lots of fans whirring and a few lights flashing but nothing else.  So, my questions:
    1. Is it possible that I somehow blew a second hard drive?
    2. Was it not the hard drive at all but something else?
    3. Will a new PSU solve the problem and will my original hard drive still work?

  • HP dv6930es bios upgrade fail

    Hi all!
Days ago I was upgrading the bios but a restart fails and now the laptot doesn't starts. When I plug the battery charger the connector lights turn on... but nothing else is running in the laptop.
I have been trying to do a bios recovery following the steps found in other sites, making a USB with wincris, the last bios version, etc. hiting Win + B keys...but I have not been able to recovery the laptop.
Some one can describe step by step all the process???
I heard that the best solution is to replace the corrupted bios chip for another one whit a correct bios version.
    Someone can help me?
Thank you very much in advance!

  • After System Update last night, the system will not boot with IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1504 error

I have had Lion for a 2, 3 months on the iMac 27 inch purchased last October (2011). Last night I chose to update the system, and deselected iMoves update because it was 1GB, and chose only 4 updates, including iTunes, Safari (i think)... But the update says error, and ask to restart the system (it won't restart itself, so I waited 30 minutes, and then pressed the Power button for 10 seconds, to let it power down, and press Power again to power it up).
However, after that, the system failed to boot up, showing a
    panic(cpu 0 caller .....)" "Unable to finder driver for this platform: \"ACPI\". ... xnu-1699.26.8/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1504
This is not typical of the upgrade process. So I searched the Internet forIOPlatformExpert.cpp:1504 and some people said it is a hard drive error, but then I powered down and pressed Options when booting up, and was able to boot to Windows 7 (bootcamp)... and was able to boot to the "Recovery", which let me choose
    Restore from Time Machine Backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X

    Disk Utility
what should I do now to fix it so that it can boot again?

This error is caused by one of the updates you applied, namely the Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.  Many people have been affected by it, including me.  I did what Linc Davis has suggested above to fix it.  The most extensive discussion about the problem, with ways to fix the problem, is here:

  • 10.5.2 Update Failed - Computer No Longer Boots from HDD NOR Leopard DVD

Hi. I hope someone can help me. I have one of the new 24" iMacs that has been working perfectly in 10.5.1. I started downloading the 10.5.2 update last night. About 130MB in, it said it had lost internet connection and stopped. I ran Software Update again and it resumed where it had left off, then said it had to be restarted to install, and went on its way. Then I got a pop up that said it could not be installed, or the install failed.
Now when I boot, it spends a long time on the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning disc. Eventually it turns to the blank blue screen and just sits there. Then I tried booting from the Leopard DVD (i figured i would just restore from my latest Time Machine backup and try the whole process again), except when it gets to the part of verifying that Mac OSX is on my computer it pops up with a system log and says I can't do anything. I can restart, shutdown, or save log.
    What can I do?

When you tried again in the morning did you have anything connected to the computer apart from your keyboard/mouse? If yes, then try again leaving the computer to "cool down" - you could even remove the power cord. When you come to try again, only the power cord and keyboard/mouse should be connected - and to go the shortest route, press the C key immediately after hitting the power button. Keep the key down until something happens ...if you get a black cursor, you're in business and can relax for as long as it takes to boot from the DVD. Try not to give up - I believe that constant powering down and troubled restarts stress the machine, perhaps causing it to overheat.
If you do give up, try one more time to boot with the T key held down (again with nothing else connected) and if you boot into the Firewire logo screen, then connect a firewire cable to your other Mac and hopefully you will be able to get in.

  • Updating iPod touch failed, iPod no longer responds

Hello, I recently attempted to download and install the latest update for the iPod touch 4th generation. I got an error that said it had failed, which when I clicked to try and start it again resulted in nothing. The iPod is stuck ona USB to iTunes logo, yet when it is plugged in it does not appear in iTunes. I've attempted resetting by holding down the power and home buttons for 10 seconds and tried a few other things and I'm not sure where to go from here. Any ideas are appreciated, thank you in advance.

    Not a good error.

  • After upgrade system no longer boots, and (apparently) no USB

So I've got Arch installed on my mom's computer. Apparently she did an update and now this: http://imgur.com/AQBZLQV
ERROR: Unable to find root device 'PARTUUID<stuff>'
It drops to a shell, but the shell doesn't work. Possibly because it's a USB keyboard? The keyboard works in the BIOS just fine, but when it hits that screen - nada.
Of course, she's not *that* savvy, so I don't think she paid any attention to what exactly was updating. So far the only information I've got from her is that she updated, restarted, and death.
I'm assuming it'd be possible to get back in there and rescue it with a disk - maybe grub got pooched? I actually had similar problems when I initially set up the machine and forgot some steps...

hey bro, I had to change my hooks in mkinitcpio.conf. Might be a different problem. might be related.

The drive had 2 partitions. One of them shows up when we plug the drive into a PC, but the 2nd partition is unrecognized.

I have a iMac 333MHz from 1999 with OS 9.0 on it. I went to apple updates and downloaded the upgrade to 9.1 (i think) I installed the upgrade and it called for a reboot.

    Tom Kerrigan

Hi Tom, and welcome to the discussions.
FYI, although most of us cruising this forum have a variety of experience with OS 9, you might have better luck posting in the OS 9 forum. But on to your problem.
Here are two commands you can try. Type them in as is, followed by the return key:
    reset-nvram
    reset-all
The iMac should automatically reboot after processing the second command. Let us know if it does any good. If you don't get any addition response here, give the Mac OS 9 forum a try.
