X200 exchange standard hard disc for SSD possible?

Hi!
I have the option to purchase a new Lenovo X200; however, my local distributor only offer a standard 250 GB hard disc. I would like to exchange that later for an SSD, but I don't know if a "standard" 2.5" SSD-disc will fit. For example OCZ Series V2 with 120 GB?
http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/flash_drives/ocz_core_series_v2_sata_ii_2_5-ssd
Two questions:
1) does the above hard disc fit in a "standard" X200 (that was not shipped with an SSD disc)?
2) Any recommendations for/against the above SSD disc?
Thank you very much,
   Jorg Conradt

Hi Lenovo community,
I am considering getting an X200 laptop, but I would prefer to have a larger SSD than Lenovo offers, e.g. 250GB:
http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/flash_drives/ocz_core_series_v2_sata_ii_2_5-ssd
In the OCZ support forum, however, many people report problems regarding slow harddisc access with particular laptops, chip sets, bios version, etc.
http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=88
Is anyone running an X200 with a 3rd party SSD (or even with that particular OCZ SSD) and can comment on that?
Thanks for any advise!

Software upgrades do not generally damage hardware; your drive's failure must be co-incidental. On most MBP's, a hard drive is very easily replaced by a user. You might want to check out this site for both hard drives as well as install videos (check which model you have so you can check the correct video):
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
    hard drives:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internal_storage/hard_drives_and_SSD
I just recently upgraded my MBP with an SSD; I purchased an kit with an external enclosure from OWC and cloned the current drive to the new one, installed the new drive and was done in no time.

  • FCP X does not recognise my hard disc for storage

I run all my applications of a 120 GB SSD and replaced my DVD drive with a 1 TB hard disc for storage. This is working very well with all my applications apart from FCP. FCP simply does not recognise my hard disc as a place for storage, although it has no problem recognising it as a source to import from.
After doing some research on other forums, most commonly this problem is due to your hard disc having a typical "camera picture name" like "IMG_001" or "DCI_001" etc. for a folder at root level, thus FCP thinks the hard disc is a camera (for import) but not suitable for storage.
I have been messing around with this for days now, and would really appreciate some help.
    Thanks in advance
p.s screen shots of typical infomation attached
    - Duddleif is the name of the SSD
    - Kjell is the name of the 'missing' hard disc

Instead of using older OS X CD/DVD install to a new drive.
Where is your backup and clone?
Buy some drives! that is a must.
Pick up a FW case, you will need it to put the old drive in, and later, so you have an external and off line drive for backups and maintenance.
A copy of TechTool Pro 4/5 and Disk Warrior (DW first).
    SuperDuper to clone your drives.
Demo of Prosoft Data Rescue 3 to scan the drive once you have a system and you put the 'dead' drive in FW case.
Then do backups and preventative maintenance on a very regular basis and have at least two backup sets.
If you have been doing that, and know and have read those instructions in the past....

  • Leaving room on Hard Disc for downloading Rental Movies.

Using the Sync mode vs Streaming. How do you Sync music and playlists to the AppleTV and leave enough room for Rental Movie Downloans...need to save about 10 GB for HD movies.
SUGGESTION: Seems like we need a selection on the Apple TV Summary page in iTunes which would allow us to specify the hard disc space to be kept vacant.
Automatic mode and Custom mode fills the AppleTV to the brim.

I have checked my settings. It appears that in either Custom Sync or Auto Sync, if you are syncing any music at all, the software will automatically fill in any unused hard disc with more music. The only way I can see to leave unused disk space is to not sync any music. Or, just not use syncing and use just Streaming by selecting "Add Shared iTunes Library" from the "Computers" area of the "Settings" screen on the Apple TV.
Could you be more specific with suggestions?

  • Bigger hard disc for Macbook

How big a hard disc can I put into my Macbook as I am thinking of adding parrallels to run Win XP as there are some programmes such as form typer in paperport 9 that I cannot run on the Macbook. I figured to have the biggest disc I could get so as to max out both Mac OSX and XP

For now the form factor 2.5" with sata interface available was 160 GB for the biggest.
There is several brand and there comes with 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm (but don't bother that much if you are in no need for fast access or streaming data.

  • Recommendations for a second hard disc for my Inspiron 530 please

    Hi,
    I have a standard Inspiron 530.
My primary 320GB HDD drive is getting close to full and I want to add a second internal HDD.
My intention was to use the new drive as a secondary drive just to store and edit photos.
Can anyone recommend a compatible hard drive around 500GB in size that I can use.
Can you tell me if it a SATA drive that I need , recommended speed (RPM), and will I need to get any connectors etc.
Thanks in advance for your help and advice
    David

Assuming that you have the Inspiron 530 Mini Tower and not the 530s Slimline version.
You can install any SATA 3.5", 7200rpm internal hard drive up to 2tb without issue.
Check out the Seagate and Western Digital brands, also check the lenght of the manufacturer's warranty, unfortunately hard drives prices are extremely high, due to the Thailand flooding, drives I purchased last September for $40 with a promo, now cost $108.
Instructions for physically installing a second hard drive in a 530 are here.
You will need a SATA data cable there should be a spare SATA power connector inside the case.
After installing the drive enter the system setup and check that the hard drive is 'enabled' [on] and recognized.  System Setup.
For windows to recognize the second hard drive, it must be partitioned and formatted. Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management, right click new drive, select format, then you can assign a drive letter.

  • New Hard Disc for Macbook

I have a Macbook with 60 gb hard drive. I feel that this is less, do i am thinking of putting in a new hard drive. Where do I buy one?
any suggestions? any precautions? I was looking at Apple's website but could not find anything.....

I would suggest a 160GB drive for your MB, it's a pretty basic size with plenty of room to grow. Oh, and be sure you get a drive with an 8MB cache. There is only space for one drive, though. I would suggest using something like Carbon Copy Cloner (http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html - free and easy to use) to transfer your files, settings, etc. to your new HD. (You will need to put the drive in a USB or FireWire enclosure to do this.) If you use this, make sure to select "Make Bootable" in the CCC prefs - that's pretty vital

  • Use an external hard disc

I have a Macbook white with 120GB internal hard disk. I also have an external hard disc (Lacie 500GB).
I don't want to use all the Macbooks internal hard disc space to store all my music and photo's on...How can I use my Lacie 500GB as an external disc to put photo's and music on?
I also want to make a backup of the Macbook every now and then (time machine). Can I use the external Hard disc for that and can I still also use it to put music and photo's on?

With respect to keeping your music/video library on an external drive, I know that is completely possible, but as I have not done so, I'm not the person to respond to that issue... but I'm sure someone will.
With respect to using your external drive for TimeMachine and external storage, you will need to create at least two partitions using Disk Utility to do so. TimeMachine needs its own dedicated drive or its own dedicated partition on a drive. Basically, TimeMachine will consume as much space as it has available (either consuming an entire drive if it is dedicated or an entire partition on a drive). If you breakdown your external drive into at least two partitions, you can dedicate one to TimeMachine and the other to whatever you like. Remember that your TimeMachine partition should be at least as large as your internal drive... but dedicating more space will allow you to go further back "in time". If you have a 500GB external and your internal is 120GB... dedicating half your external drive should be fine for your TimeMachine backup. Note that you may become unhappy with your 120GB internal drive at some point and decide to upgrade to a larger one. You should take that possibility into consideration as changing the partition sizes later, while fairly easy... can be problematic if your second partition is close to full.

  • How to move from 3 separated itunes music folders into one new hard discs??

So : i bought a new external 6TB thunderbolt hard disc (for extra speed for my huge library) and i copied from 3 other 2TB hard disc into there. I named the sub folder the same like an original. I thought it is enough to determine the new place of each in "media folder locations" and updated.... but its not working
What should i do? How will see the itunes these music folders like an originals??? I dont want to reimporting, because  i dont want to loose  all of my "date added, played etc" informations.
If I'm doing three  partitions with folders, as were the old ones will work?
..or should i rewrite the iTunes Music Library.xml with text editor?
pls help me and thx for answering!!!!!
    macbook pro/ osx 10.8.4 / itunes 11.0.4

Best to give the new iPad a different name. I assume you have purchased an iPad 2 or the next generation iPad which is just called "iPad"? If so, you can name the iPad 2 "Kens iPad 2" or "Kens iPad 3" since the new iPad just introduced is the 3rd generation.
The first time you connect your new iPad to iTunes on the computer used for syncing your existing iPad, you will be prompted to transfer the backup for your existing iPad to the new iPad, or set up the new iPad as a new iPad. Both must be followed by a sync with iTunes.
Each device has its own sync preferences with iTunes, which can be the same or different for each device synced with the same iTunes library and computer.

  • I bought and external usb hard disc, and i added it to time machine and now i can't use it! what do i do?

I just bought this external USB hard disc, and what I did was I put all of my pictures in there because I need space for my computer. What I did after that , is that I configured the hard disc with Time Machine, to clear some space also and to "protect" my data. But now I can't use my hard disc, I can't see my pictures I had in it and I can't use it for Time Machine either.
What can I do to get my pictures back?? Thanks!!

External USB hard disks come formatted, and unless they're specifically sold for use with Macs, they're formatted for PC's, with FAT, exFAT, or NTFS formats. Macs can read data from all three formats but can only write to FAT and exFAT formatted drives. So you could save your pictures to an external with either of those two formats. However, Time Machine needs a HD formatted and partitioned for a Mac, and if you "configured the hard disc" for use "with Time Machine," you effectively erased the pictures. However, since you "can't use it for Time Machine either," it's not clear exactly what you did, so we'd need to know that first. Also, what do you mean by "clear some space also?" On your internal or the external? And if the external, how did you do that since it already had your pictures and should still have had some empty space.
I'd suggest looking here to see if your external's format agrees with what Time Machine needs. Just look, don't actually change anything, so we have some baseline to work with. And also look at the box the external HD came in. What does it say about computer compatibility and which operating systems it's intended for (i.e., Windows, Mac, both).

  • Solaris 10 not recognising hard disc properly

    Hi,
I am running Solaris 10 (3/05) on Blade 100 and I have 2 x120GB hard discs. In boot prom probe-ide recognises them correctly and of course after adding these discs I booted the box with boot -r
In Solaris when I run format command 1st HDD is recognised properly (the one from which the box is booting) while the other one is recognised as 20GB Seagate drive which was there before I added 2nd 120GB drive which is now physically in the box.
When I select 2nd disk in format utility (which shows as 20GB Seagate drive) and I look at partitions, it all looks as if 20GB Seagate drive is still inside.
I tried booting with boot -r few more times, running sys-unconfig but on the OS level the OS just cannot recognise properly 2nd hard disc for some reason.
Would anyone have any suggestions how to get Solaris 10 to see the disc correctly?
    Regards.

Boot -r did work. All it does is ask the driver to create the device links in /devices and /dev for you. It did that.
The 'sd' driver then reads the label (if it has one) and allows the device to be used. Since you had an old label on it somehow, it showed up as 20GB. Continuing to do a 'boot -r ' (or a devfsadm) isn't going to change that.

  • Possible importing assistance for MPEG-2 hard disc camcorders..

I haven't tried this (..I don't have a hard-drive camcorder ..oh; but I do have a FireStore..) ..anyway: for your info, MacInTouch today mentions a program called "VideoPier", whose blurb says:
"VideoPier is the missing link between MPEG2 camcorder and your Mac.
It lets you visualize the clips on your camera that Quicktime would otherwise refuse to open.
VideoPier lets copy them to disk, and export them to any format for viewing (iPod, AppleTV, iPhone) or editing (iMovie 06/08)."
I've no idea whether this plays nicely with QuickTime or not, or causes any problems, or runs smooth and sweet.
But this might be useful for people with a hard-disc MPEG-2 camcorder. Perhaps someone will try it and report back.

I use MPEG Streamclip (free) with the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($19.99) to convert "muxed" MPEG-2, VOBs, etc. to DV or AIC for editing in both iMovie '06 and '08.

  • I have Lion as my current and main OS. Is it possible to partition part of my hard drive for Snow Leopard?

I have Lion as my current and main OS. Is it possible to partition part of my hard drive for Snow Leopard? I'm good on partitioning but when I insert the Snow Leopard install disk a message tells me I can't run the install program because I currently have Lion installed... obviously. Have I gone about this the wrong way? Do I need to boot the computer using the Snow Leopard install disk instead of my main HD?

Apple will never update that as for the most part it is true, and the fact that they really don't want you to run older OS X versions (for whatever reason).
Now this probably won't work with the next line of MBPs and MBAs that come out. But it is for the current builds.
But as I stated you need one of the lastest builds of SL for it to even boot the system.
It won't work with the retail 10.6.3 DVD disc. That version does not have the correct drivers for the newest Mac's.
