X200 fan noise & HDD upgrade

Hi everyone;
Since I replaced my hard-drive, I've noticed 2 things:
1)  thinkvantage button does nothing
2) My cooling fan is always on.  I've read the posts saying to shut of wi-fi, change to dynamic setting, remove access connections; I've done all of these, to no avail.
Before I replaced my HDD, this was the quietest machine, now its pretty loud, so perhaps there's a relation, here.  It was quiet right after I replaced the drive, but after I ran some tasks using the max performance setting, the fan just won't quit.
I used the rescue and recovery software on an external usb drive to transfer the os, ect, onto the new drive, which is a Seagate Momentus 500gb 7200.
Any ideas?

So, I swapped the hdd, and the stock runs quietly.
The problem is that the fan at the HDD runs at different settings with the stock HDD, and only at maximum with an aftermarket (at least this one), creating much noise, and drain on the battery.  I don't know if theres some type of protocol between the hdd and the powermanager to control the HD fan; if so, it doesn't communicate with mine.
Which sucks, 'cause I need the extra speed and space, but I don't want the noise/ battery drain.
I wonder if the others who had the fan problem also upgraded their drives.
If this is the problem, Lenovo ought to fix it, as HDD's do fail, and eventually everyone will end up upgrading at sometime (unless they get a new computer).

  • X 200 fan noise after upgrading to windows 7 32 bit

last month iv'e upgraded from win vista 32 bit to win 7 32 bit, ever since (that day exactly!)  i did that i'm facing a lot more fan noise then before the upgrade, noise that bothers me.
it seems like the fan is starting to work more often then before, and besides that it never goes into idle but continue to work all the, regardless of the load on the computer.
until now iv'e tried to update anything possible (including bios) , i have reinstalled the win 7 with a clean install (the first time i used the update option) and again updated everything possible, that didn't solve the problem.
iv'e also tried to change the power manger options regarding the fan and cooling policy. the only thing that made any change is the "reduce noise dynamically" but that option also changes the overall performence of my system,so that's not a solution for me.
iv'e also read in a couple of places that turning down the wifi or access connection helped someone, but not for...
any ideas what to do next?

i've got the same problem. upgraded from a silent windows xp to windows 7, and there's the noise.
have you found any solution to tune it down?
    thanks and best regards,

  • Fan noise after upgrade ram and OS

    hello there
i have a problem with the fan noise. it's extremely high. i'm running a MacBook Pro 15" and i had OS Tiger. i bought an iphone4S so i upgraded the OS to snow leopard. all running fine!
then two weeks ago i decided to upgrade ram to have a more perfect machine, and i upgraded from 2GB (1+1) to 4 (2+2). the brand is kingston
after that there is a persistent fan noise. it went worse when i went to my windows partition. then it sounded like an helicopter... i updated all software, bootcamp drivers and everything and i don't know what this noise can be... any help?

I did exactly the same as you. The ram I installed is Integral IN2T2GAXNEX2, 2x2 Mbs.
Unlike the original ram which has manufacturer's & serial numbers (as seen in system profiler) this new ram does not.
    Manufacturer:          0x0000
    Part Number:          0x000000463732353642363145363830304600
    Serial Number:          0x00000000
The fans now run at nearly 2000 rpm all the time, from boot, although the temperature is only 19ºc.
Has anyone added actual Apple Ram and found the same problem? (some sites claim this Integral ram to be identical to Apple Ram).
Another site suggested non apple ram may lack a temperature control chip thus inducing the fans to run just in case.

  • Fan noise after upgrading to leopard

Does the machine run slow? It could be a stray process. I had a problem with a printer driver that was using 100% cpu when not in use, but worked perfectly with Tiger (10.4).

  • Fan and HDD noise

    Hey guys!
I recently noticed the fan on my macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch to be a tad noiser than what it's use too, before the mac was so quiet you could hardly hear it working, now you can hear the fan noticably.
I checked out the fan app and it's roughly doing 2000rpm with the temp on the app saying it's around 48 - 52 degrees celsius when nothing is running other than safari.
I then used the temp app and got these results:
    http://puu.sh/6QwfB.png
    http://puu.sh/6Qwh8.png
I have also noticed over the last day that the HDD has got noiser, after running a S.M.A.R.T test it came back as verified but i am almost 100% sure that it is more noticable than before. The sound i hear is the read/write sound, i checked to make sure nothing was running and finder was not indexing or anything, it just to me sounds louder. obviously, as the mac is from mid 2012 it could of had some use so i am a bit worried about the noise incase it is starting to fail! (all files have been backed up)
I then noticed some issues with the windows partition i made with bootcamp, it became unbearably slow and would often crash when loading up chrome which is what it was not like before, i assume this points towards something wrong with the hard drive but i am yet to see any issues with OSX (will be taking it to lectures next week so im sure i can spot any issues then as i will be using it a fair bit!)
I hope i don't sound like too much of an idiot, i bought this macbook pro second hand (still has a year left of apple care!) and i am not 100% sure if the figures i have given are normal. I can live with the fan noise but the HDD noise is driving me insaine when in a quiet room!
Hope this is just me being silly, as i said im new to the macbook experience and hope to stay this way, hoping these are common things of a macbook and i'm just being a bit OTT.
    Thanks!

    Okay,
Just checked my console and this one error pops up:
    10/02/2014 12:06:48.000 kernel[0]: SMC::smcReadKeyAction ERROR TC0D kSMCBadArgumentError(0x89) fKeyHashTable=0x0xffffff801c040000
It seems to be doing it every 3 seconds or so!
EDIT: fixed this, was an app causing it!

  • Fan noise after HD Upgrade

    Hello:
I have a 12" 1 Ghz G4 Powerbok in which I have repalced a failing HDD, one 60 Gbyte drive for another. Once I've put it back together again I have a steady fan noise. Always on - from power-up, before the chime, to shutdown, except when sleeping.
I have no spare parts left over after re-assembly and I was not required to force or stress any parts in the process of putting it back together.
    Any Ideas ?
    Thanx
    GM

I was able to return both my hard drives to the store....no problems.
Interesting what they told you about the Scorpio. I can only tell you that I've had no problems at all since I changed.
The vibration and humming sound were very annoying....I can certainly relate to your dilemma.
    Good luck!

  • X200 is suddenly emitting a loud fan noise

My X200 has been working perfectly since October. Now, almost a year later, it suddenly started to emit a loud fan noise (almost as if something fell inside the fan, although nothing did). Has anyone experienced fan failure on the X200? How can I get it fixed? I'm on a long trip in Europe and need to use it on daily basis. It's quite embarrasing to turn the machine on in public places.

heretohelp - if WaleedBakr's system is under warranty then of course it would be covered.   no one is claiming otherwise or denying him of service.
regarding Lenovo knowing "exactly what is wrong with [his] computer", that depends entirely if a call has been made to service.   it sounds like the issue may have cleared itself and that a service case hasn't been opened.
regarding this post going so long without a response from a technician, this thread was started on a saturday (in the US) and our forum doesn't have technicians roaming around.   this is a peer-to-peer forum, not an official support channel.
i recommend familiarizing yourself with our community participation rules where we outline the objectives of this forum and rules of conduct.
if you have personal experience with this same issue happening on multiple X200 systems then i suggest posting about it in this thread so the information can be logged.   that would be very helpful.

  • Fan noise after memory Upgrade

    Hello,
I have a Mac Mini and I upgraded it to 2GB of memory and now I got a fan noise constanlty going. I have tried to reset the SMC and I left the machine without any cables plugged in for about 45 minutes after my second attempt.
I had upgraded the machine before and this never happened.
Any clue as what I got to do or what may be wrong?
    Thank you for any help!

Mac Mini 1.66 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

To quote from a post by "damfair":
There is a fan speed regulation wire at the front of the Mini that needs to be unattached to get to the RAM slots - if this is left unattached, the fan continually runs at full speed. Could this be the source of the constant fan noise?

  • Hard Drive upgrade? and fan noise.

I have a 2008 MacBook 4,1 (Early 2008) MB404LL/A.  Im thinking about switching out the hard drive for a bigger one.  Would the 2.5" HGST 5400RPM 7mm HD be compatible?  Or would you guys recommond a different one?  Also, every now and then, my fan will blow pretty loud.  Any ideas on how to fix that?  Any tips would be appreciated.

Most 2.5" SATA drives should work with the machine; the drive that originally shipped with the machine was a 9.5mm so 7mm will fit.
Regarding the fan noise - your machine being 5 years old, there's probably lots of dust clogging the fins of the heatsink along with dried up, degraded thermal paste impeding thermal transfer, hence leading to high system temperatures and the fan working harder to dissipate heat.
Since you'll have the machine apart while replacing the drive, take the opportunity to remove the fans and blow out the heatsink fins with a can of compressed air.
If you're feeling up to it, you can remove the motherboard along with the heatsink assembly and replace the ancient factory paste with a fresh new coat - I suggest Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste.

  • Frequent fan noise on MBP after upgrading to Mountain Lion

Just upgraded to Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro Early 2011. Never had an issue with the fan before, but not

I had exactly the same noisy fan problem after upgrading to ML. Called Apple. They told me to do an SMC reset, but that didn't solve the problem. Checked the Activity Monitor and saw that WDSmartWare (the software that came with a Western Digital external HD) was taking 157% of CPU. Don't understand how any app can take up more than 100% of the CPU. In any case, I uninstalled the software and the fan stopped instantenously. In fact, it stopped  during the uninstallation process itself. I hope I found the source of the problem.

  • Crucial RAM Upgrade **Increase fan noise**

I received my Crucial 2 x 512MB DDR2 RAM sticks for the Mac Pro today, fitted them according to Apple's recommendation and off I went.
The system ran fine for around an hour before the fans started 'buzzing'.
Has anybody else experienced increased fan noise from the Crucial sticks?

  • New M30-70 making lots of fan noise

I have a new Lenovo M30-70 4210U. I upgraded RAM and HDD->SSD, installed clean Windows. It's making a lot of fan noise, even when standing still / idle. What to do?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
Was the fan making the same noise prior to the clean install of Windows?  If not, try installing the Lenovo Power Management driver if you haven't done so already

  • Fan noise when I Target Disk Mode - power supply or 500 GB drive, or RAM?

I have a Revision B iMac G5 which falls squarely in the power supply replacement program and has had the power supply replaced twice. I'm wondering if my extra RAM, or larger hard drive could be to blame for the fan speeds upramping at random during normal operation, and always when I Target Disk Mode the machine. I have a Western Digital WDC WD5000KS-00MNB0
and two 1 GB RAM modules with the following spec PC3200U-30330.
Before I try to pin down the cause one by one, has anyone noticed whether there are 500 GB drives on these Macs which will not up the fan speeds? Has anyone noticed whether target disk mode on these models will not increase the fan speeds when RAM is upgraded to 2 GB?

I have the same iMac as yours. Changed the original 80 gig hdd to a 250 gig. Both drives are seagate barracudas. I also upgraded the memory to 2gigs. The fan noise was terrible.
6 months later a ram module gives up the ghost. I originally thought hard drive, so purchased a Western digital 500 gig WDC WD5000AACS-00ZUB0. (The green power series).

    Fans very quite. still waiting for the replacement ram module;

  • Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
    I have tried these:
    1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
    2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
    Thoughts and suggestions?

  • Macbook pro- OSX lion 10.7.2 fan noise

I just bought a macbook pro laptop, upgraded it to the Lion version, it is now 10.7.2, with processor of 2.7 GHz intel core i7, memory of 8GB, 1333 MHz DDR3. Whenever I am on a program like imovie, safari, iphoto, charging my smartpen...etc.... the fans goes off like crazy. It lasts for a very long time. Sometimes the noise get so bad, it goes from loud to louder...... I don't know what the problem is.
I am a new mac user, I have no idea how to install, delete, clean softwares. Please help?? Thank You ...

Thanks a lot for replying, but what exactly does the istat widget program do?
Also, the fan noise seems like a normal noise every time I launch a program, but it's getting to the point where I am frustrated(annoyed) of the fan noise. I would've thought that upgrading to a Mac book would cause less fan noise because of it's high processor. Sometimes I feel like I should go back to a Dell or HP because of this problem, but at the same time, I love my laptop. ;)
