X200 Sporadic freezing
We have an X200 that freezes sporadically. So far it seems to happen when I lock it and leave it alone for 10-20 minutes. When I come back, the display is showing the wallpaper (the thinkpad/thinkcentre timezone map) and the cursor. The cursor arrow can be moved all over the screen, but nothing else responds. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing, windows key does nothing, etc. The only way to get out of it is to do a hard reset. Happens both on AC power and battery power. Pretty much the only thing we have changed on the notebook is we have installed XP in place of Vista. We have 2 other X200's with similar configurations that do not freeze. Any ideas? Thanks!

You could try to open the Event viewer (Start --> Run --> type eventvwr) to see if you can find any particular error at the time the computer freezes.

Macbook pro sporadically freezes when iTunes is open
When I open iTunes, even if I'm not playing or using it in any other way, my Macbook programs will freeze for 10 or so seconds every couple of minutes. It doesn't happen at regular intervals. I can move the mouse, but when it's hovering over programs, I get the beach ball. I just updated to iTunes 11, and it still seems to be happening. I don't know if I downloaded or added something to iTunes that caused its problem or what.

Click on "Crash Reporter"
Last crashes will show up on left. Click on the first in list depending to iTunes
Copy the text as far as the line "Crashed Thread: <number>" including that line.
Copy the section of the crashed (#x) tread itself.
Post here.
The report will show, which application or add on causes the crash.

OSX 10.7 sporadic freezes (because of Epson driver?)
MBP 17", SSD 256, OS X 10.7.1, Epson driver version 5.2
The display often freezes wenn using the epson printer AL-C1900 (Network-Printer) in different appliances for printing (the print-job done by the printer is ok). Nothing is working after this event, even the appliance-managing-task (cmd+alt+esc) doesn't work. Only the emergency-stop by pressing the on/off-butten for a while and restarting the machine helps. But sometimes, in the same situation, the printing process workes very well.
The installed Epson driver is the latest version from apple recommended.Have you tried checking with Epson to see if they have a newer driver yet? Sounds like you need an updated printer driver, and Epson is the only one who can provide that. Unfortunately, "wait until Epson releases an update and don't print until then" is not much of a solution, but the only other one is to downgrade to an older system that their driver will work with, and that's a lot of work and inconvenience.
BTW, note that every time you force restart your machine, you may be damaging data on the hard drive. You need to repair it, or at least verify it, with Disk Utility every time that happens. Hold down command-R while starting up to enter Lion's recovery mode, then use Disk Utility from there to repair the hard drive. -
Macbook Pro (late 2008) with 8GB ram sporadic freezing / hanging

Last year, I was running Lion on my late 2008 MBP with 4GB ram with no problems. Whilst 4GB is the maximum officially supported for my machine, forum posts suggested that some people had no issues running it with 8GB.
I went for the upgrade and everything was fine, with no hanging - 8GB on Lion on my machine seemed to work fine.
When I then upgraded to 10.7.2 I had a separate issue (to do with an old install of PGP) which meant I had to do a fresh install of Lion from scratch and then restore from Time Machine to get it back working. Ever since I did this, I have experienced odd behaviour, notably:-
Machine has a tendency to hang / freeze every now and then for up to 10 secs and sometimes with the spinning wheel and sometimes also requiring a hard reset
Any mounted drives in Finder (dropbox, Truecrypt) sometimes don't come up at all, with the Finder progress wheel spinning in the bottom status bar of the window, and only a "Relaunch Finder" resolves this and allows me to access the mounted drive.
Machine seems a little sluggish despite me keeping on top of maintenance activities for my machine (as I used to for SL and Lion when I first installed)
I was wondering whether there was something whereby Lion would work fine had it been installed whilst the machine had the officially supported 4GB (and then later upgraded to 8GB) as opposed to installed on a machine with 8GB (which only officially supported 4GB) at the time of install. As above, everything was working happily with the 8GB until I had to do a completel refresh from scratch.
Has anyone else had experiences of anything similar and can shed some light? I am considering refreshing and restoring from time machine again with just 4GB in the machine and then putting the extra 4GB back in after the restore, but don't want to do this unless there is any evidence to suggest this will address some/all of the issues I'm experiencing.

I expect to do that later today. In the same screen as below, I now see the memory as 8GB. When I run Activity Monitor I am seeing 7.75GB so I am guessing that the video card is using the "missing" 256 meg.

Mouse and computer sporadically freeze on websites.
Periodically, my mouse freezes when I'm web surfing. Or leave a website open for a prolong period while doing something else at home. The only fix is to turn off the computer and reboot it. During freezes, I can't exit a website, I can't even shut down the computer normally or access task master or anything. I have to hold down the power on button until the computer shuts off or shut off the surge protective power strip. Sometimes the mouse will unfreeze on its own but shortly thereafter goes back to its old trick of freezing.
Today, I got it into my head that the problem wasn't my computer or some software interfering. So I logged on using something I dislike using, Internet Explorer. After going through the same motions as usual, including visiting websites that have frozen before, I experienced no freezes. This indicates the issue if Firefox. I have even opened multiple Tabs to provoke a possible freeze with IE but it doesn't freeze So again it must be Firefox.# Try Resetting Firefox. VI Run Sporadically Freezes Entire Computer
Hi,
I am having a critical issue with a VI I wrote and I'm not sure why. The VI writes to a GPIB address to control an Agilent DCA, then reads data, then alters a parameter and repeats. It seems that the computer will randomly freeze while the code is running. An emergency restart, holding down the power button, is required to use the computer afterwards. It doesn't seem to matter how many loop iterations that code has gone through before it freezes, I have seen it freeze after just two and I have seen it freeze after 100. The only thing I can think of is that somehow the gpib write and read are causing some critical failure.
Is there something else on the computer that could be interfering/interacting with the VI that causes a system wide shut down? I've had the task manager open and CPU usage and memory never go above 25%. The two factors that have been constant for these freeze ups are that the vi is running and I haven't provided any user input to the computer (such as a moving the mouse) in a couple of minutes.
ThanksHow often is it at 25% CPU? Most likely you have a 4 core processor and highly serialized code, so you are actually running one core at 100%.
The mentioned USB power issue is a good place to start. Do you use any other third party DLLs or drivers?

In the last few months, I've had half a dozen situations where my computer has simply frozen up (Mac Pro Early 2008, Dual Quad core, 8GB Ram, OS 10.8.5). No pattern that I can discern. Each time I've had to do a hard shutdown. Then upon restarting, I've run Disk Utility and verified the disk and repaired permissions.
Today when the computer froze and I rebooted, I got a different message when I used Disk Utility to "Repair Disk." This time I got a dialog box saying the hard drive needed to be repaired with Recovery HD and I needed to restart the computer and launch Disk Utility from there. When I did that and clicked on "Repair Disk," the disk checked out fine. I never was put into the Recovery HD.
I'm not sure what to think. Is my hard drive going? Is the motherboard going south? Any ideas of what might be happening here would be appreciated.Thank you.

My os x server (10.4.11 G5 ppc) has started sporadically freezing for 'brief' (15sec to a minute) periods. This happens every 5 to 10 minutes, but with no regularity... At these times, I see the spinning pinwheel and, though the application windows can still be moved around, none are activating/updating (including, unfortunately, the terminal or activity monitor, so I'm having a hard time deducing what's causing the freeze.)
I have ~30 emacs & imacs of various types connected to this server, which is the PDC for our network as well as the file and web server. No windows machines on the network.
When a freeze occurs, each of the clients connected to the server also freeze, though there is no apparent network conflict, as other machines (not authenticated to the server) continue to be able to use the network fine to access the internet... Sometimes the client machines recover when the server does, sometimes they do not, and must be turned off manually (can't even force-quit anything)
here's the big problem. I don't have a backup of the server more than a couple days old, and that doesn't take us back to before the problem started. So I cannot restore to a previous 'working' system.
And, of course, by apple system care ran out a couple years ago...
I'm not yet willing to rebuild from scratch...(!!!)... So - - how do I troubleshoot whether this is an application / system / hardware / network issue?Hi

Not sure I understand this? If no PCs why make it a PDC? Perhaps you mean an OD Master?

As ever look at the logs. Applications > Utilities > Console > System.log. Depending on what your Server is configured as and what Services are enabled and running there may be other logs you can refer to?
Has someone been 'fiddling' with the DNS Service by any chance? Can the server resolve itself on both pointers?

We have recently purchased a new externally hosted LMS system (Silkroad's GreenLight) and we have a 3rd party taking our older authorware courses (which are working) and updating/converting them using Adobe Captivate 5.5. Once these are done and uploaded into the LMS system, users are finding sporadic freezing at launch of the converted courses. In some cases we are using a Riverbed solution to compress content so that network performance is not an issue. With the various components involved in this situation. we are having a hard time troubleshooting and narrowing down the problem as it is so inconsistent. I noticed a blog http://helpx.adobe.com/captivate/kb/projects-published-captivate-5-lms.html suggesting a fix and we tried this with one user it worked with another it did not. Our environment consist of XP (and some Win7), Adobe Flash Player 10+, and IE8 or 9. Can anyone tell us what the proposed template fix described in the blog is actually doing? Or if you've experienced this problem and have another fix we could try? Any help is appreciated....Getting desperate. Thanks!
I believe the patches offered in that post were to address an issue that sometimes occurs with Resume Data bookmarking in certain LMSs.
If you are currently using Resume Data bookmarking, try disabling it by checking the box in LMS Customisation dialog to Never Send Resume Data. If that resolves your issue, you at least know what is causing it.
In cases where there are a large number of variables, the only way to diagnose the issue may be to remove as many variables as possible first. Then when you finally get to a stable version that does not misbehave, you then re-introduce the other components to find the one/s that re-introduce the issue.
So, in your case, you may need to look at how your developers are 'converting' the authorware content in Captivate. Make sure they recreate everything using Captivate components, and insert the images via the approved menus etc. I'd also temporarily avoid using this Riverbed compression solution until you have established the cause of your issue. It may be interferring with something. -
Computer STILL freezing and spinning ball after mountain lion update
I have an early 2011 Macbook and like many others I am STILL experiencing the sporadic freezing and spinning beach ball of death/ pull my hair out / F*in up my life MULTIPLE times a day for hours on in!!!
I've erased all caché, reinstalled OS X Moutain Lion and conducted a reset of some sort by using Command + Option + P + R (I got this tip from another thread I randomly found). The reset works only for a short period of time, then I'm back at square one.
I love the update but its really starting to impact my life in a major way.
If someone could PLEEEEEEEASE advise a permantent fix to this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. If not, please tell me how to uninstall this OS completely!!It is time for ALL of the new MBP machines to be replaced that are having the same issues. There is no reason that the new ones should be experiencing this issue. NONE of the Apple applications allow any work to occur since the update to 10.8.2 - something has destroyed the memory - it does not matter which Apple application I use, the memory is reduced to < 10 MB though it should be 8 GB. Not going to fight any battle. Apple must do the right thing as these steps are a joke designed to take my time. Replace the machine. If that doesn't work, replace again. If that doesn't work, repeat. -
Fixed my SL freezes, hanging, beachball
After migrating from Leopard to Snow Leopard (10.6.2) about a month ago, I experienced a constant issue with hanging applications, sporadic freezes with a variety of applications.
I have gone through all the suggestions posted wrt to this issue and for me the following fix worked (so far...) rather perfect. My systems now runs as stable as it did using Leopard. Reinstalling, PRAMMING, VRAMMING, CleanUps, DiskUtility check, S.M.A.R.T. status checks & eventually just using TimeMachine restore did not solve my freeze/hanging/beachball issue
_My solution_: go to ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
and put all the plugins you see there into a custom folder (I named mine SwitchedOff). Now move all the plugins to that folder and reboot. Well: now your browsers are decapitated, so I moved
Flash Player.plugin
flashplayer.xpt &
Silverlight.plugin
back into ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
and restarted the browsers. (now enabling flash & silverlight video options)
Result: no more sporadic freezes, hangs, 30-60 secs. beachball phenomena and basically a stable steady OS I was used too.
FYI: I have not tested moving back the other Plugins into my ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/SwitchedOff folder. They now contain:

Droid RazR keeps freezing after ICS upgrade
After the ICS upgrade my Droid RazR keeps freezing & I have to reset it by holding down the on-off & volume down buttons...I did a factory reset as well which seemed to help but it still sporadically freezes up especially when texting...Is anyone else having this issue & know of a solution..? My battery drains a lot faster now too I've noticed.
In another discussion thread, regor3 did the FR but did not allow the reset to restore the apps. Instead they reinstalled the apps one at a time on their own and things improved dramatically. There are apparently some old GB apps that don't play well with ICS.

Sporadic Problems with Graduated and Brush in 2.3RC
1. Sporadic program hangs with Graduated Filter still occurs with roughly
the same frequency as ver 2.x.
2. Painting with Adjustment brush in 1:1 preview will some times result in
the preview disappearing. All images disappear in 1:1 view. Change to
Library and back does not restore the preview. Zoom to 3:1 does not restore
preview. Exit Lightroom and relaunch restores preview.
I did not see behavior 2 in Ver 2.2.

Sporadic freezes of LR after using the adjustment brush, switching to another photo and applying the graduated filter. (=> CPU at ± 99%, RAM 2,56GB used/blocked)
A forced restart of LR solves the problem for a while.

Getting AHT to work on Mac mini server
I have a intel core 2 duo Mac mini server (macmini4,1), and I'm having sporadic freezing/locking issues. I am trying to run the apple hardware test but it doesn't work, holding down the 'd' key does nothing. If I try single-user mode startup it works fine so there doesn't seem to be an issue with the keyboard. Since this is the server I also don't have an optical drive to go to to boot from the install disc. Why doesn't this work? Is there an alternative way to get this to run that doesn't involve the install disc?
Actually, this problem is only partially solved. I still get "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock..." when I type 'mysql'. I can access mysql by typing 'sudo mysql', but still get the socket error when connecting via php, so I think I still need to get to the point where I can type mysql without sudo.
Also, I went ahead and installed MySQL 5 with the tar package.

Got a clicker-wheel iPod and it's playback of music is being interrupted by sporadic freezing when the unit goes into some sort of photo download routine and then comes up with error "No Card Inserted". I see there are others out here with this issue, but there seems to be no answers...from the community nor from Apple. Is there a fix posted somewhere that I've not scoured?
And the 5-R's don't do it. I'm on iPod software 3.1.1 (the latest). I've got Photo Import set to OFF on the iPod...why do I even have this dang option since this iPod doesn't even do photo's? Perhaps, APPLE, this is the bug??? Can it be so simple?

G4 DA and Pismo Panther and TigerI have the same problem, it started right after I plugged into a Logiix charger that a bud had. His ipod is also suffering the same problem. Too bad for me we figured this out later. Have you ever plugged into a non Apple charger?
I also tried reloading an older version to no avail as it gave me the error message when I disconnected the ipod from the computer.
Is there a way to completly clear the ipod hard drive, other than a restore.
