X200 Ultrabase DVD/CDRW read-only?

My X200 came with Vista Business installed and an Ultrabase with a DVD/CDRW (P/N 42T2541). I installed Windows 7 Professional on it when it first came out.
I thought my optical drive would write CDs under Vista, even though I never tried to use it that way (at least not that I recall). Today I found it was seen by Windows as a read-only device. It sees a HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM DU10N in device manager. Clicking on Properties shows
Device type: DVD/CD-ROM drive
Driver provider: Microsoft
Driver version: 6.1.7601.17514
Firmware (checked with fwwinod.exe) is 103.
Should I be able to burn a CD? Do I have a wrong driver? Or is this a read-only drive?

This is a Read Only drive, it won't burn CD or DVD.

Jin Li

  • X200 Ultrabase DVD RW

    Hi,
Can someone confirm if part No 3924848 will fit in X200 ultrabase DVD slot.
I understand that Ultrabase slim is 9.5 DVD not regular 12 laptop DVD slot.
3924848 is a 9.5" DVD but wanted to confirm about back connectors.
Also are there any after market DVD RW which can fit in X200 ultrabase.
    Thanks
    Deepak

you need a SATA interface Ultrabay slim drive not the PATA interface ultrabay slim drive used in X6 ultrabase, T4x/6x or Z6x..

  • Files copied from UDF data dvd are Read-only

I have a bunch on data DVDs burnt on a pc using Roxio Easy Media Creator 7. These disks are UDF format and can be read perfectly on pc or mac. The problem is : if I copy a file to my desktop, it becomes owned by me but r-xr-xr-x. It's not a problem for me personally but other users I support have a hard time figuring what's wrong when they can't rename the file they just copied.
Is it normal behavior or am I the only one with this problem ? I was supprised not to find anything in apple forum about this.
The work around is to change permissions to read-write in the getinfo window + apply to included elements + password or use chmod but it's not how I'd expect it to work. And I don't know how to modify the default permissions given to files from an UDF dvd. Copies of files from iso9660 disks are read-write.
    3 PM G5s and 2 G4s   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I don't believe this is a problem of leopard in general. i can not reproduce this behavior with any of my afp shares. no matter how i connect (as an owner or as a guest) after I copy something to the desktop it gets standard 644 (not 600) permissions.

  • CD/DVD Drive reading only intermittently

After a rather bad crash on Friday, I successfully booted to my TechTool Pro CD and ran the tests (failed the surface scan--had to zero all the data and reinstall the OS). I of course, reinstalled from the DVD, with no problems. I wanted to boot to the TechTool Pro CD, just to check everything again, but was unable to.
Then, I booted to the hard drive, and it saw the CD and I was able to install the parts that run from inside the OS. I proceeded to try to put the rest of my applications back on, but when I put in my Microsoft Office CD, it didn't recognize it (it didn't even spin, or acknowledge the presence of anything in the drive in Finder). I ejected and put it back in. Nothing. I ejected and made a coworker put it into his computer (found it immediately). I put it back in. Still nothing. I put in Illustrator instead, also nothing. I rebooted. It saw Illustrator and I was able to install. I ejected and replaced the Office CD. Notta. After a few iteration of that (including another reboot) I gave up.
This morning (I had shut down completely last night), upon start up, my computer suddenly recognized the Office CD and I was able to install.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this problem?

The Office CD is clean and free from scratches (I just checked).
I tried to boot to TechTool (both the time it was successful and now two unsucessful times) by holding the c key down when the computer started up. On the most recent such attempt, the CD drive did not recognize that I had inserted a disc (TechTool) before shutting down, did not boot to it, but after I booted back to the hard drive, recognizes the CD again.

  • DVD/cdrw not working correctly

I have a Satellite A135-S2246 running W/Vista with a Mat**bleep**a 770 DVD/CDRW drive. The DVD/CDRW will only read CD's and not DVD's. It will read a music CD but not the Toshiba Recovery disc or movie. I'm not sure when this started. I have already attempted deleting the upper & lower filters in the registry. I have also tried deleting the device from Device Manager, hoping it would reinstall correctly. TIA for any help.

The DVD and CD read/write are separate.
It's the most likely component to fail. Any of these part numbers should work.

  • Which DVD for X200 Ultrabase

Can anyone please tell me which DVD drives will work for the X200 ultrabase?  I want to be able to read both CD and DVD media and RW to either the CD or DVD.  I can't figure out which one is compatible with the X200 ultrabase and I need it ASAP.
    Thanks,
    Knit

The X200 Ultrabase looks like a new item.  I screwed up and didn't order one w my X200, and now the price is higher.  Hoping for that rumored 25% off on accessories coupon...
Note the HD adaptor is just that, an adaptor, not an HDD - and its designed to fit in an Ultrabay.  (sorry for the long link)

I plan to see if a 2.5" SATA drive can be fitted w/o this $50 piece of plastic.
Likewise, I suspect that selected aftermarket Slim SATA DVD/RW drives may work if one is careful of specs.  For example,  I see a Lite On unit for $50 at New Egg.

Running a mid 2009 iMac on 10.7.5, 3 gb memory, 320 gb hd.
Suddenly the computer stoped reading DVDs and the only time I can read a CD is if I restart.  Quite often when I insert a CD it gets stuck and I cannot get it out until I restart and it shows up on the desktop where I can then eject it.
I have checked and double checked the finder prefs and all looks normal showing a check mark on CDs,DVDs etc. (the ones I want to show up on the desktop)
I have reset the PEAM, repaired permissions with both the disk utility on the computer and the disk utility when I start up in the Recovery Disk.  I did notice that sometimes the permission repeat the same correction several times before it moves on, and sometimes it doesn’t. I have Windows installed on a partition but I keep it unmounted until it is needed for my wife’s work.  The dock seems to be just fine and all the apps seems to run just fine.  When I insert a photo CD iPhoto does not open but when I insert a music CD iTunes does open.
Also, most every time I open iPhoto it takes a long time(sometimes as long as 2 minutes) for it to load.
Sometimes my Mail (Mail 5.3) does not post new mail but most of the time it does.
Once and a while it seems like the computer slows way down but then it seems ok ten minutes later.
All  of these ‘things’ seemed to have happen suddenly and I have not downloaded anything from the internet in some time.
Of course the warranty and extended warranty are both no longer in effect having had this computer for more than three years.
I am running Java and Adobe Player because some of the sites I go to a lot require both.

I believe that insufficient RAM may be the source of some of your problems. If you have a RAM of somewhere 4 to 8GB, you will experience smoother computing. 3GB doesn't seem right, so you might want to learn more by going to this site:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx
I don't know what know what's happening with your optical drive, but it seems you use your drive quite a bit. In that case, look into a lens cleaner for your machine. It's inexpensive, works quite well.
I hope you'll post here with your results!

  • Read only data DVD

A photographer has burned me a dvd with photos in NEF format. I can view them with "Quick View", but i can't copy them to my computer. I get an error code -8060 or -35. Under permissions of dvd properties it is "read only". Is it still possible to copy them or I shoold ask photographer to deliver photos to me in some other way?

My MacBook accepts DVDs/CDs and reads/plays them but sends me an error message every time I try to burn. This is totally unacceptable. Does anyone else have this problem?

  • UltraBay CD/DVD Combo Drive Compatibility with X200 UltraBase

I have a T500 with a CD-RW / DVD-ROM drive (part #44C1930). Wondering if this drive is compatible with the X200 Ultrabase or I need to get a whole new drive altogether?
    Help would be appreciated.

if it is from the T400, T500 or W500 then it is compatible with the X200 ultrabase.

  • Blank DVDs show up as read-only (can't burn DVDs)

When I insert a blank DVD, the disk utility opens and it says the disk's capacity is 0 bytes, and it is read-only. The disk also doesn't mount, I have to eject it through the disk utility.
I have tried two brands that have worked in the past, one is DVD-R, and the other is DVD+RW. I haven't tried to burn a DVD in at least six months, so I don't know what software or settings are different since then.

I usually repair permissions after updates for that reason, but I did so again anyway and rebooted with the same result.
But when I created a new account and inserted a blank disk I was asked what to do with it so I opened it with Disk Utility to see what it says about the disk. It still said, "size 0 bytes, read-only" even though when I inserted the disk it said, "You've entered a blank disk, what would you like to do?"
So I guess at some point, 1) I set blank DVDs to open automatically in Disk Utility, and 2) for some reason Disk Utility says blank disks are read-only (or when that happens you can't write to the disk)
Anyway, all I had to do was set blank DVDs to open in the Finder. I'm burning a DVD right now.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Satellite A - CD/DVD drive does only read CD's

I'm abit confused at this situation. My CD/DVD drive reads CD's but does not read DVD's. I dont know if I have to reinstall the driver for the CD/DVD or does it need replacing.
    Please can someone help.

Try removing the CD/DVD Filters from the Registry.
When CD/DVD related software is installed (such as iTunes, Nero, virtual CD software), they install filters into the registry, which can cause compatibility problems.
    1) Run Regedit (Start -> Run -> Regedit)
    2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot.
If your CD/DVD programs stop working, you will need to reinstall them (preferably with an updated version).
This utility can remove the filters for you:

If thats no good, then you may need to replace the DVD Drive.

  • PSE 10 Can't edit read-only layer groups (a.k.a.  I just want to make a custom DVD menu in Elements)

A little background: I wanted to make a custom menu so I opened a copy of one of the canned menu.PSD files in PS Elements 10.  It opened up with all layers and their sublayers showing.  So far, so good.  I did a bunch of editting and had my menu just about right, saved it and burned a DVD with it.  I saw some corrections that I needed to make so I opened the same .PSD file and it showed all the main layers (with the folder icon) but not the attached layers.
I double-clicked to open these layers and got:
"You are attempting to open a group, which is not supported in Photoshop Elements.  The layers in this group will be simplified into a single layer.  Simplify the layers? Yes No."
I was just editing these things the day before yesterday.  All I've done since then is register my software online. I have seen it stated in this forum that "Elements doesn't support layer group/sets" but it was referring to an earlier version I'm guessing.
Question 1:  Is this still true of PSE 10?
Question 2:  If so, how was I editing them the other day?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
    Joe

If you haven't uninstalled premiere elements then it should work, but there are a few things that will not work when editing the dvd templates:
(it only works on certain dvd templates and only on a machine with premiere elements installed)
*If you change the document dimensions either larger or smaller. (not the size of the elements in the template but the overall size such as using
    Image>Resize>Image Size or Canvas Size)
*If you delete any of the layer groups
*Changing the name of the document
There are probably other causes and they may know more on the premiere elements forum:

  • DVD/CDRW drive not working - Tecra A4

Hi, I have a problem with my Tecra A4.
My DVD CDRW drive is not working properly (Power is there, but it doesn't show up on the system), I have temporary installed a DVDRW drive from my HP laptop which is working fine.
I tried to run my recovery disc (never used it before), but nothing happens (press and hold C on start up). Will this only run with the correct drive installed or am I doing something wrong?
p.s. I bought this second hand but it is new. It had a damaged screen which I've replaced
    Julian

If the old drive will not read the medias so its possible damage.
You should know that not every drive is compatible with the unit because of the master/slave/csel settings.
You have said that the pressing of the C button doesnt allow you to boot up from the drive.
In such case I would recommend to enter the BIOS and there you could change the booting order.
However, this all tip will only works if the new drive is compatible and supported

  • DVD - CDRW not speeding up

T40 Type 2373 with a DVD - CDRW.  Need to reformat hard drive and reload WIN XP and new programs. DVD will not spin to full speed.  Light goes on and spins slowly in what sounds like a cyclic manner.  Tried several CD's.  Ejects properly.

Sound like it could be just reaching the end of its service life, i have replaced mine T40's drive with one i stole off (i borrowed it should i say on a permanent basis, cough cough) my friend's non working T43 just couple of months ago, it was replaced under warranty one and half year before that too. I could only blame myself as i was using a lot of scratched and dirty discs. But anyhow you could get a second hand replacement off ebay or just use an external dvd-burner or something, like i do now too.
