X200 Vista to Windows 7 Clean vs. Upgrade - Software License Concern

I bought an X200 with Vista (before the free upgrade) and have now purchased the Windows 7 upgrade software.  Most of the tech forums recommend a clean install instead of an upgrade.  Should I worry whether the software I have purchased (e.g. MS Office, Acrobat 9, etc.) will require me to purchase another license?  Or, will it "recognize" my PC if I copy down the product keys?

Hi
Most software still do not have activation so there it is a question of having the serial number and the matching installer/CD saved.
With Adobe software that uses activation you can deactivate the software before the upgrade and then reactivate again after.
I do not know how sensitive MS Office is. My experience from one system which I helped recover was that Office activated automatically on the same machine again. I guess even if you would be required to activate over the phone there should be no issues as you are reinstalling on the same machine.

  • Reinstalling TouchSmart software after a clean install / upgrade of Windows 7

I have an HP TouchSmart 610-1150xt.  I have no use for much of the preinstalled software, so I would like to perform a clean install of Windows 7.  At the same time, I would like to upgrade the preinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate. In addition to all drivers, I would like to reinstall the TouchSmart software.  I have already made system restore disks to recreate the factory state, if needed.
Ideally, I would also like to reclaim the hard disk space currently occupied by the recovery partition.  During the clean install, I would like to create two separate partitions -- one for the OS and applications; a second for only data.
I have performed numerous clean installs of Windows in the past, but have always had access to copies/licenses of all applications to add to the clean OS.  I have downloaded all drivers from the HP website, but cannot find copies of the preloaded software.  While the application manager currently allows reinstallation of preinstalled software, it is not obvious that this option would be available from the recovery disks (or the recovery partition) after a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate.
Are individual copies of preinstalled software available from HP, perhaps on an FTP site?  If so, how can I download these programs?  If individual copies of these applications are not available for download, can they be accessed from the the recovery media or recovery partition after performing a clean install/upgrade of Windows 7?
    Thanks.

I purchased an hp pavilion for m wife in 2009 and at that time vista was the operating system that was installed.  Microsoft offered a free upgrade to Windows 7 but at the time my wife was going through chemo therapy and that was the last thing we were concerned about.

    Hi,
Please post the HP product number for your PC. How to Find the HP Model Number and the HP Product Number or let HP automatically find your PC model number and HP network attached printers. This will allow others to review your issue, make suggestions and review your responses. This is usually the best way to get assistance.
The free upgrade period for VISTA to Windows 7 has expired.  I suggest that you consider Windows 8 rather than Windows 7. Run the below analyzers so you can determine if your PC is ready for Windows 7 or Windows 8.

  • Ideapad Y450 - Vista to Windows 7 upgrade comedy routine

I've looked for information on how to upgrade my y450 (Vista) to Windows 7 but have been unable to find what i am looking for. The lenovo page for Ideapad windows 7 information is a dead link.
What are the steps to install windows 7 on the laptop? The issue here is the app 'one key recovery'. How do I install it so this software will restore to windows 7?
To be honest this website is a trainwreck: dead links, wildly different urls and formatting, and no clear information for customers. I am eligible for the upgrade DVD I have seen mentioned (I think), but am not prepared to go through the ordeal of shipping. Couldn't Lenovo provide us all with information how to deal with this? I would have thought there should be a FAQ for Y series customers wishing to upgrade but I have not found one.
    1. Please advise how to install windows 7 so that I don't have a redundant vista on the HD for recovery. Step-by-step would help as Lenovo have non-standardised the installation with their one-key bloat. I've seen conflicting walkthroughs from randomly confused customers.
    2. Please provide a link for a support package for Y450 users that gives all the  Win7 drivers needed for the massive bloat they force on their customers (one key recovery/dolby buttons/comedy slide functions). Or we have to manually look for each driver?
    3. Please explain how users of computers shipped with Vista can upgrade successfully to Windows 7. (Yes with one key recovery etc working). The goal is to have a fully working computer - not some compromised hybrid of vista and 7. One-key is absolutely useless and an insult if we can't revert to Win7 rather than Vista.
    4. I've seen mention of a mythical CD Lenovo provided for those who had laptops with VIsta shipped in error. Can we *all* not get this software so we can have working systems?
If this information is there and I've missed it I'm sorry. I've spent over an hour looking with no results. Seeing as the first laptop I received had been repartitioned and used by salesmen, and the second shipped with a blown speaker, I'm not too impressed. I've also no idea why my laptop has vista on it rather than windows 7.  - I bought this laptop a week ago.
I hope you can point out that this is all my mistake and that the information is out there. At least then I can get on with things. If they hadn't bothered with one-key recovery (a 'feature' that puts more people off buying the laptop than encourages them to buy it) they would have saved on R&D and made a more successful product. You have to ask yourself wtf they were thinking on this one.
    Please advise.
EDIT : It appears that this recovery system is not supported in Windows 7 (please confirm). If this is the case then do I simply format C and install Win7? I have heard about 'hidden partitions'. Is this hidden recovery partition on C drive and will it be erased by a simple Win7 installation (by following basic installation wizard)?
I just want a clean installation of Windows 7 with no lingering partitions and unused data (namely vista image).
1/ Do i just insert win7 dvd and install with no issues? 2/ Please link driver pack for y450 vista users upgrading to Win7.
    TY.

I'm strictly a ThinkPad user and have never seen an IdeaPad, so I don't have the answers to your questions.  However, in this thread down in the Win 7 board, someone said they had gotten it to work with the RC candidate last summer.

  • Upgrade Vista to Windows 7

Ok I have a T61 which is still works reasonably well for my purposes  (core duo T7500 @ 2.2 GHz + 8g Ram).  Windows Vista has become corrupted in some way which interferes with printing and now McAfee anti virus is giving me problems as well.  So I figure it is time to upgrade to Windows 7.
What is the best way to go about it?   Download 7 from MSFT site?  That would seem the easiest.
Will 7 use the subsystems already resident on the computer thus inheriting the problems of Vista?
    Thanks for your guidance.

    Hello,
You might want to take a look into purchasing a license that includes the physical media for the installing the operating system, such as an Upgrade Edition license, which you can still perform a clean installation with, as opposed to just an upgrade of the existing operating system.

  • Upgrade Vista to Windows 7 Keyboard Filter Issue

I really need some help with this...
I upgraded vista to Windows 7 full retail version.
Compatability check said to update keyboard filter. I couldnt find much info about this and assumed it wouldnt affect it too much except extra functions I probly never use.
Unfortunately, my keyboard doesnt function properly at all.
    Im using HP G30-260US laptop.
I have now disconnected the keyboard ribbon and plugged in a usb keyboard, quite a pain to use this one, but at least its working. I would really like to know of a fix for this issue to get my real keyboard working and windows 7 is already running on this computer, from upgrading, not a clean install. I've tried installing a different quick launch buttons driver and uninstalled it completely after windows 7 but no success.
    Please help me hehe
    Thanks a miillion

  • Equium A200 Vista to Windows 7 upgrade

Trying to find out if it's OK to upgrade Equium A200 with Vista to Windows 7
I ran the "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor". It lists several Toshiba Apps and/or drivers with the comment "we don't have any compatibility information about this version of the program". It helpfully links to Toshiba's Windows 7 ugrade site, and eventually to this link -
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/KBA9A02PX0000R01.htm
"For Toshiba PC models NOT listed below, Toshiba offers "Limited Driver" support on a clean installation of the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system."
    No Equium models are listed.
What on earth does "limited support" mean in relation to Equium A200 + Windows 7. IOW, is it OK to upgrade to Windows 7?
    TIA,
    Peter

OK, I understand not all or no Win7 drivers will be available for the 2yr old laptop. (I take it there is no way to determine which relevant drivers will not be available.)
If I make a Clean Install you say (and it makes sense) I will need to get install all drivers. However it that does not seem a sensible option as it's not clear which of the required drivers will be available. IOW could install then find I can't get some important drivers, unless I'm missing something.
If I upgrade from Vista to Win7 you say "many Vista drivers are compatible with Win7, actually I didn't know but it makes sense. Also the Win7 Upgrade advisor application didn't mention any problems with drivers on this laptop (it only flagged several unknown Toshiba applications).
Seems the best or rather only viable option is to Upgrade. FWIW I notice that Vista Home Basic & Premium can only be Upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. Other Win7 versions, in particular Win7 Professional, need to be Clean Installed. Shame as I wanted that for its additional networking capabilites.
Many thanks for your reply. If you think I've misunderstood something please comment again!

  • How to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7?

I recently bought the upgrade version of Windows 7 utimate for my laptop, my laptop is new and Windows Vista pre-installed. I would like to know if I upgrade Windows 7 from this "Fresh", pre-installed vista, would this Windows 7 operate as good as the clean installed Windows 7?
I am not very clear how Vista upgrades to Windows 7, do Windows 7 upgrades based on the old Vista system? Or it will install a clean and new Windows 7 then only copy all the settings and programmes from old Vista?

    Hi
Can you please tell us what Toshiba notebook you have exactly and what Vista version you have exactly (Home, Business, etc. and 32bit/64bit)?
Theoretically you can upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 but it must be same version. That means its only possible to upgrade from 32bit to 32bit and 64bit to 64bit.
If you want to upgrade you have to insert this disc and follow the screen instructions, thats all.

  • Can I upgrade Vista to Windows 8 on a MacPro 2,1 (OS 10.6.8)?

I have Vista-64 (BootCamp 3) on my Windows partition and am beginning to have problems with some newer software. I'm running 10.6.8 on the Mac side, and can't really upgrade that (don't want to use Lion). Can I upgrade my Vista to Windows 7 or 8, and what's the easiest way to do that (without redoing the Bootcamp partition, hopefully). Thanks.

Xcode 4.x cannot be installed on Snow Leopard.  You need a 3.x.  So if that is what you used then yes, you need to install lion.   If connect.apple.com still alows registration or logins using an existing appleid then you could download the last xcode 3.2.6 for free.

  • TS1717 are there problems with iTunes upgrading from Vista to Windows 7?

are ther problems upgrading iTunes from Vista to Windows 7?

The best method is to use Windows Easy Transfer first to backup all your data, and do custom clean install. And install all your apps and drivers afterwards.
Yes it should work. Make sure you are ready, and have all the latest drivers and applications ahead of time.
There are some "gottchas" with the upgrade from Vista.

  • Windows 7 upgrade software

I purchased a HP desktop with Vista Ultimate that qualified for the Win7 upgrade. I submitted my order and received a confirmation today that it would be shipped between October 30, and November 09. I am happy with this schedule.
However, I do have a question about the exact procedure and what is included with the upgrade software pack.
When I received my new HP desktop, the OS was corrupted and also the Factory Recovery Restore partition.
I contacted HP support and they agreed that was the issue, and suggested they ship me the Restore disk.
I received them one week later, and when I booted to the disk 1 of the 4 disk set, a new Factory Recovery Partition was created, and all the programs as originally shipped on the system. I was back with a usable system, and Factory Recovery partition that worked.
My questions is this. Does anyone know if the Win7 software pack will create the Factory Recovery partition, so if later in the life of the system, it could be restored with Win7, and all the applications that originally shipped with the system, as it would have been with Vista, or is the Win7 software pack just Win7, with no other software that originally shipped with the system?
I have been unable to find an answer to this question.

I gave up on windows 7 upgrade.  Venders for some devices have not even supplied drivers for some things yet.  Very untimely and too much of a rush to windows upgrade always a problem.  "If not broken don't mess with it."  Someone said that awhile back and that is the best advise.

  • HP is not offering Vista 32bit to Windows 7 64bit upgrade??

Why aren't you you that? When you get Windows 7 from somewhere else you get 32bit AND 64bit disks! I would really get this upgrade from legal ways, but not paying 30euros only from 32bit, I can get both almost for the same money. Or it is time to use bittorrent and get what you really want?

You can't upgrade a 32-bit OS to 64 bit OS...you have to perform a clean install which kinda negates the point of it being an upgrade.  Try reading more on Microsoft's upgrade paths...
No offense, but you need to do more reading on Microsoft's upgrade paths yourself.  Like Vista, Windows 7 upgrades are license upgrades and they are intended to allow movement from 32 bit to 64 bit (and vice versa).  Yes, you need to do a clean install to go in either direction but that capability is intended by Microsoft to be an option in the "upgrade" process.  All Microsoft produced disk is a full bits installer, whether full version or upgrade disk.  The only difference that the upgrade disk includes a function to verify presence of a qualified licensed product.   If HP is doing OEM customized upgrades then there could be good reasons to offer only 32 bit (such as lack of 64 bit drivers from HP's end).  If, however, they are just doing a pass through of Microsoft's RTM version then, provided the processor supports the 64 bit OS, it should be an option.  Personally though, I would assume that there is a good reason since HP has been one of the industry's strongest proponents for the 64 bit version of Windows.  BTW, the OP's contention of going the route of BitTorrent is certainly no solution. That is ethically and morally bankrupt regardless of circumstances.

  • I have recently upgraded my laptop from Vista to Windows 7. All my music is on a windows file, how do I move it to i tunes library

I have recently upgraded my laptop operating system from Vista to Windows 7. i tunes is asking me to sync my i pod, because it is recognising the Vista laptop and not the Windows 7. All my music has gone from i tunes library but it is all stored in Windows music folder(s). How can I move it all to my i tunes library?

So your iTunes library is now empty after the upgrade?
Simply drag the one folder (containing all of your music) into your new empty iTunes library or choose File -> Add to Library in iTunes.
Otherwise, if they aren't all in one folder, you'll have to drag each seperate one into iTunes.

  • I have just upgraded my laptop from vista to windows 7, I have all my music on an external as the library is to large for hard disk. I have downloaded Itunes 11 but cannot  fathom a way of getting my new itunes to connect with my external library.

Question:  I have upgraded my windows vista to windows 7, I have all of my itunes music stored onto an external due to the size of content, so in vista all of my music in itunes had a path to F (external library). But now I have upgrade to windows 7, I cannot get itunes to recognise my library from my external. I have tried to connect external and open itunes with shift key down with both suggestions but to no avail. please help, all I want is to keep my library on external not on hard drive. I have also gone to preferences/advanced and made sure the external drive is chosen. This seems so complicated and I thought it would have been easy...

At a guess you followed the process in HT1364 - iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder which would have moved the media folder to a new path of your choice. This process leaves the library database files back in the original location of <User's Music>\iTunes. Often people assume that all they need is now on the external drive and wipe the internal drive, or discard their old computer, before backing up the all important iTunes folder. If you have a backup of your user's profile folder from before the upgrade the iTunes library folder should be in there somewhere. Restore it to <User's Music> and your original library should pop back into existence. The external drive would need to have the same drive letter that it had previously.
A more effective way to relocate the library is to move the entire iTunes folder to the external drive, then hold down shift when starting iTunes and keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. You would then choose the file iTunes Library.itl in the iTunes folder on the external drive. If this is the way you moved the library before then that is how you should now reconnect to it. Changing the media folder in preferences doesn't change which .itl database file is opened, nor does double-clicking on an .itl file directly.
If you no longer have the original .itl file then you will have to build a new library and import the media to it. If you need to do this I would recommend you create a new library at F:\iTunes, then move your existing media folders inside F:\iTunes\iTunes Media before importing. This will avoid the creation of duplicates and make sure the library is in the correct shape going forwards.
If you have an iPod or iOS device my scripts ImportDevicePlaylists and SyncStats may well let you recover ratings, play counts & playlists from the device.
When you've fixed up your libray you should consider getting a second external drive to backup to.
