X200 vs X220

Just how much difference is there between the two?
I'm looking at buying a lightweight number to carry around in my rucksack and ride to work on my bike everyday.
I'm seeing X200's for under 200 quid and X220's for almost 3 times that, is it really 3 times better too?

In that case, you can leave the charger at home (it's not a monster but it's in no ways super light either, it's a very small brick style charger witch a detachable cable).  You can also leave out the slice battery, it's an added cost but it's great if you 'need' it.  You can also get it with the smallest model battery, it's the lowest capacity one that 'does not' stick out of the back of the laptop adding a sort or handle/grip.  This smaller one will make the system itself both smaller and lighter.  You can get the extra stuff as needed for occasional trips, etc.
So with that, I don't think you need to look at anything other than the internal specs of the machines you are comparing.  The price difference is major, so you just need do a bang for your buck check.  How much more powerful is the cpu, you can find benchmark tests online that will give you some clear idea.
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-2640M+%40+2.80GHz  that's the CPU I have on the x220
There are plenty of benchmark sites out there where you can compare any and all processors, sometimes these sites can be a pain to navigate but once you get at what your looking for it's very helpful.
The way I would do this when I was building desktop systems was to compare several parts, which is easier to quantify when you can do it on a piece by piece basis and will be a bit more difficult overall comparing one laptop to another, but still do-able.  So take the CPU.  x CPU is 15% more powerful on average to y CPU however x CPU costs 70% more money than y CPU.  y CPU in the above situation, is a much greater bang for your buck value so if that extra 15% isn't mission critical then y is the clear choice, as the 75% savings along with the later re-sale value of y, will allow for a cheap future purchase upgrade of CPU z which will likely be more powerful than x was to begin with...  Same considerations with the GPU etc., etc.,  and actually that is something of note here with these machines, though I don't have a specific answer, I can tell you that the intel integrated graphics on the x220 are quite quite good considering the lack of a dedicated GPU, that might be the one area where the x200 might not be able to stand up at all, but it might also be of no major concern, I do not know and it will depend a lot on your applications and OS.
and so on, do the same checks on..., how does the system RAM compare speed/latency/capacity etc., system features, HDD/upgrade-ability, etc., etc..  If your getting what you want out of the lower end model for a huge discount then just go with that, probably it won't last you as long until you 'need' an upgrade but if you can make do and don't mind a replacement sooner (or perhaps the specs are very close in numbers I don't know) then just get that.  Do a quick check to make sure all of the features of the tablet and system are up to par in the older model, I've heard good things about the older models in comparisons on Youtube from "jesse" I think his name is, who upgrade to a 220 and does a lot of xtablet reviews.

  • 7mm SSD for Lenovo X200?

    Hey
I want to replace my old HDD with a SSD. So I discovered that the Lenovo X200 need a 7mm SSD. But I can't find one. I know that Lenovo deliver the X200, X201,X220 with SSD. So does somebody know which model they use? Or a model that fits?

  • Replacement DVD drive T430

I need to replace the optical drive on my wife's Thinkpad T430 and I just want to check compatibility.  Does the same drive fit in the T430s and the T430?
Here are some drives I found.  Just don't want to order one and have it not be the right one.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The T430s drive is "ultrabay slim" (9.5mm) and the T430 uses "ultrabay enhanced (12mm). The slim drives will fit in the T430, but not very well. They are the same electrically. The 2 links you show have pictures of drives that were pulled from older machines.
This is what a slim drive from a T430s looks like:

  • W500 whitelist

    Hi.
How can i check devices (wwan cards) which i can use on my W500 ?
I have w500 - 4061 and wwan card f3507g. I need to replace that wwan to newer model.
Can i use ericsson f5521 or f5321 (Lenovo branded -  not Dell/HP). on my Lenovo W500 without removing the Thinkpad BIOS whitelist ?
    TIA
    Regards

I don't blame you. If you've been able to get the Gobi 2000 card to work with the stock BIOS, and if you're already going to buy a newer Ericsson card, then it won't hurt anything if you try it  before flashing (it'll just cost you an additional disassembly/assembly of the machine).
    And if you look here:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS018764
that page lists a driver for the Ericsson F5521gw/F3607gw, and if you search for "W500" on that page you'll see:
    Version <6.4.1.6> (83Wo13WW)
(New) Added support for ThinkPad Edge E425,E525.
    [Important]
End of support for Ericsson F3507g Mobile Broadband Minicard Composite Device.
Note: It is supported with the previous version, 6.3.3.6 (83Wo12WW). (Click here for 83wo12ww README.)
    [Important]
End of support for the following ThinkPad models.
    ThinkPad L410,L510

    ThinkPad T400,T400s,T500
    ThinkPad W500
    ThinkPad X200,X200s,X200 Tablet,X301
Note: They are supported with the previous version, 6.3.3.6 (83Wo12WW). (Click here for 83wo12ww README.)
And that last link contains a readme file that says:
Software name Ericsson F5521gw/F3607gw/F3507g Wireless WAN Driver
    Support models ThinkPad L410, L420, L421
      ThinkPad L510, L520

      ThinkPad T500, T520, T520i
      ThinkPad W500, W520

      ThinkPad X301
      ThinkPad Edge E220s
      ThinkPad Edge E420, E420s
      ThinkPad Edge E520
So that means you'd have a driver for the Ericsson F5521gw/F3607gw/F3507g that is designed to run on the W500. All that means is that two or more models of computers used the same driver for their own specific model of WWAN card. And that those WWAN cards are somewhat related. That's as close as I can get you to what you want. And if I search for F5521gw on the Thinkwiki.org site, I see that the F5521gw was available on a number of XX20-series machines.
    Good luck!

  • Achi mode x200s windows 7

if i change bios to run ACHI for sata i get blue screen of death on my boot to windows 7
how can i get it to run in ACHI mode for increased speed? do i need to reinstall windows for this and do a driver install or can i switch it while windows is already installed somehow?

    Hello,
I do not have an X200s, but am guessing the X200s was originally set up with the hard disk drive interface in Legacy/PATA/IDE/Compatibility mode (not sure of exact term used in BIOS).  Is that correct?
If so, you might want to check out Microsoft Knowledgebase Article # 922976, "Error message when you start a Windows 7 or Windows Vista-based computer after you change the SATA m...".
If the STOP error (BSOD) mentioned is the same one you are getting when you attempt to boot the X200s with the drive interface in ACHI mode, try running the Fixit on the page to resolve the issue on your ThinkPad.

  • Missing technical information on X200/X200s/X300 for final buying decision

    Hello Thinkpad community,
    I am planning to buy a thinkpad x200s, x200, x300 or x301 to replace my z61m.
Since I am missing some detailed technical information, it is hard for me to make this decision. Please help me to fill the gaps.
    X200/X200s
My favourite is the x200s, since the main requirement is ultra mobility. To make it usable also on the outside of buildings, I am interested how bright is the display
    1.) Candela / nit of X200s?
    2.) Candela / nit of X200?
However, I want to use the notebook when I am at home as desktop system with a dual Monitor setup, too.
3.) Does the x200 / x200s with extension bay support dual monitor setup (one via vga, one via digital output)?
4.) If dual monitor setup is supported, what is the maximal supported resolution for two monitors?
5.) Is dual monitor setup supported with linux?
    X300/X3001
Just in case the display / resolution of the X200s is two small (I will have to check it in real in a lenovo partner store if it will be available in Germany) for me I will switch to X300 / X301.
    5.) Candela / nit of X300?
    6.) Candela / nit of X301?
Dual Monitor support of X300 series?
7.) AFAIK, X300 supports only dual monitor in combination with this usb-docking station with NO linux support (window drivers needed). Is that true?
8.) AFIAK, the X3001 has dual display out on the notebook itself (vga and display port). Can thes ports be used in parallel fo dual monitor set up?
9.) If dual monitor setup is supported with X301 is it working in combination with linux?
    64-Bit Operation System support
If I wouldn't have stumbled across this tread (http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=X_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=1485&view=by_date_a... I wouldn't dare to ask, thought it would be impossible because of the 32-Bit processors. Does the X200 / x200s support 64-Bit Operation systems? Especially Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition or SUSE / REDHAT X86_64 64BIT? Not that I would need it for office usage, however some servers (local development & testing on ultra mobile thinkpads rocks ) require this.
Thanks to your feedback! I am really eager to come to a decision, place the order and have a terrific ultra-mobile, but still desktop friendly notebook
BTW: Is there any technical document listing some or all of the information which I am missing? If yes, I cannot find it on the lenovo web site...
    Thanks & Regards!
    Kris

64-bit OSes are supported on all X300/X301 and X200/X200s models.   server 2003 and 2008 are not officially supported but will run on the above equipment.   there's a chance that not all drivers can be found however, especially for 2003.   2008 is much easier to implement since it registers with most drivers and apps as simply being vista with SP1 (since vista shares 2008's kernel).

  • X200s tried to add webcam - now neither webcam, nor thinklight will work

    Hi all,
So, as the username hopefully indicates - a newbie to the x200s, which I bought recently, though I've been using thinkpad products for a few years now (a devoted fan!)
My x200s did not come with a webcam and, since I am thousands of miles from home, I reckoned I would try and install one manually. Note that I have swaped its HDD for an SD & changed keyboard in the past with no problem, so I was assuming (foolishly, perhaps!) that vaguely knew what I was doing.
I followed the instructions and user experiences on this thread, I purchased this camera - and got off to work.
Even though everything seemed fine when adding the camera to the system, a strange thing happened after I rebooted (I run Linux Mint 16): neither the webcam, nor the thinklight were now working. After lots of testing, I assumed I must have just destroyed part of the cable during installation, and so I purchased this cable (Lenovo ThinkPad X200 LCD Video Cable 44C9909) and tried again. Same result! The only difference is that the first time round, an "lsusb" command on linux would return a Ricoh product (and I assume that's the webcam), but it would still not be recognised by Mint, while now, there's nothing. In both cases, the Thinklight didn't work.
Since both the thinklight and the webcam come out at the same end (see the right end of the cable on this picture) I am assuming, of course, that the two are related.
Would anyone know which of the clips on the left end of the cable on the same picture, above, correspond to the webcam and the thinklight?
Thanks for reading, and any response and thoughts on the above would be most appreciated - a little bit at loss at to what to do now.

    Hi,
perhaps HMM and Service Video might help.
Be sure integrated camera is enabled in the BIOS Setup menu.

  • How to start X200 with lid closed? (for use as HTPC)

I'd like to use my X200 as an HTPC with the lid always closed (and use the TV as the only monitor).
Is there a way to start the X200 with an IR remote control (or some other way)? (so that the X200 can be off or in sleep mode when not being used)
I don't see anything like "wake on IR remote signal" in the BIOS.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I am not sure if this will work, but maybe you could use an IR or RF wireless keyboard (or record the signal from one into a univeral remote) to wake the unit up?

  • X220 random shutdowns

My new X220 laptop worked fine for 4 days.  Then it crashed randomly 6 times. I had installed Office 2007, Lightroom 3, Photoshop 5.  I called tech support and this is what i have done:
    1. Tech support 1 told me to do a recovery and reinstall the basic image with no additional software.  Then I should add first the latest Lenovo drivers followed by the latest Microsoft  drivers.  This lasted for one day and then the laptop had more crashes.
    2. Tech support 2 told me to do exactly the same but I must first install the microsoft drivers and then the lenovo drivers.  I erased everything, did a recovery and followed his suggestion.  The machine lasted two days and it just crashed again.
I very much like this laptop: size, battery, keyboard, and ISP panel.  My wife's MAC pro has a crispier panel but is more reflective.  The MAC also is too big and heavy for me as this is just a travel photographic tool. Eight crashes in 8 days is a laptop just below trash however. The MAC does not crash and the  WIN7 pro I built two years ago has crashed once in two years.   Not happy about one crash every two years but one crash per day renders this laptop useless.
I assume the crashes with my 220x may be the present image ( software problem) not  a hardware problem?  Does a clean reinstall of WIN7 pro may be a solution?  Any suggestions?  As is, this laptop is useless to me....but I want to make it work.  Price is not bad.

you got a new Thinkpad X200? That is already 2 generations old, i am surprised you can still get a new one.
Also, the X200 have TN Panel not IPS, unless you are talking about X220.
Try running memtest+ and also tpfancontrol (to see what temperature is currently running at). Then run Prime95 and see whether you can trigger an error or a sudden shutdown.

  • ThinkPad x200s 7470 3g driver

    Hi,
I'm trying to find and download 3g driver for ThinkPad x200s but i cant find it. Can you send me link or tell me how to install drivers for 3g modem.
    Thx.

Purchase and install wwan card (modem) youself.
Look at the page below for details:
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/x200_x200s_x200si_x201_x201i_x201s_hmm_en...
Lenovo approved wwan cards for x200s are listed on the page below:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-70510#7
Select the card you need (it depends of the area where you are) and p/n (FRU). For almost worldwide carriers Gobi 2000 is good choice, in European netwoкs Ericsson F3507 will work too.
Modern external 3g/lte/wifi routers are the best choice if you need the capability of LTE FDD/TDD networks.
    UPD
Be sure your laptop is wwan ready i.e.has sim reader and wwan antennas.

  • X220 & Windows 8 Radio (Fn 5) settings

I've installed the Windows 8 drivers for my x220 and I have some problems..
    1. Bluetooth comes on automatically when I restart. It won't remember that I had it turned off prior to shutdown.
    2. The Windows 8 (right-hand side setting bar) toggles wireless off and on when I hit Fn-5. It has no setting on it for BT. How do I get this toggling to stop?
    3. I also get the older menu at the same time (which is what I would like to have). This has functions to turn both radios off and on. Unfortunately, when I hit Fn-5 to get to that menu...I get the problem I described in #2.
I've searched through the forums and found a couple of other similar reports, but no solution. Is this a lost cause and Lenovo isn't going to really support the X200 on Windows 8?

You need to change setup.exe in c:\drivers\win\hotkey to windows 7 compatibility after you run 8jvu34ww.exe which creates the hotkey directory in c:\drivers\win,.

  • No XP driver for X200 ??

We bought a X200 last week. I came with the default Vista OS. Our company is still running XP pro using our site volume license. The lenovo/ibm downlown or support site does not have any XP drivers for X200.
When I called the tech support, she told me she could not find any driver as well. And, there is nothing she can do, nor escalate/reporting this issue to the supervisor.
Has Lenovo just downgrade their support?

typically drivers are listed on their respective matrix page but it looks like the X200 page hasn't been posted yet.

  • X220 successor?

When will there be a refresh of the x220-model? Usually there is a refresh about once a year i guess
Most important question: Do we have the chance to get back the 1440x900 panels in the X-series? I have a x200s to replace, but I won't go for a lower resolution since it would mean making a step backwards. Why were these panels stopped in the first place?

    HiVolt wrote:
Touchpad doesn't matter to me, in fact I've had it disabled since day one. But on a few occasions I've had people use my laptop, and I turned on the touchpad, and they were less than impressed. I just told them to click with the above buttons which are meant for the trackpoint.
The trackpoint is great for use while typing, however it still has the problem of feedback calibration, i.e. if I keep moving the cursor towards one direction for a while, the cursor would move backwards for a while upon releasing the trackpoint. This is annoying. Moreover, it's not agile at all compared against the touchpad.

  • New Elite ThinkPad X200 with integrated graphics

I was looking at the new X200 but I don't see why it's called the Elite or what the difference it between the standard X200. Maybe a fresh pair of eye will help.

"elite" models have higher minimum configurations compared to the normal X200s.   otherwise they're the same machine.
if you configure a regular X200s to be the same as an elite, prices are completely identical.
