X201 - Random standby, blank/bright screen and left side USB issue

I have a bunch of issues with my X201 that slowly developed over the past months. The motherboard had been replaced once due to USB/standby issues and worked fine for a few months, but now it seems to be returning again.
I'm not sure if this is again a motherboard issue or something else altogether. In rough sequence of when the faults started appearing.
Initial symptoms: the left side yellow USB ports will stop working after returning from standby/hibernation. Windows 7 gives a USB device error and basically everything connected to that same USB controller won't work. Sometimes it recovers by itself after  a few more standby/wake cycles, sometimes if I disable/enable the USB controller in Device Manager but often nothing works except a shutdown and cold boot.
Then the screen started going extra bright or more accurate high gamma white-out when returning from standby. Everything becomes very whitish/bright but slowly will settle down to normal within 30 seconds or so.
I could live with all these niggling small issues, but recently my X201 started going crazy with random drops into STANDBY. I know there is a thread about random shutdown but that isn't the issue here.
Just out of the blue, connected to power with 100% battery, the X201 will go into standby. Sometimes it will wake almost immediately by itself, then go back into standby again. Other times, I have to hit the Fn button to wake it, but frequently it will just go right back to standby again. The number of times this happen before it stabilized again is random. Reboot may or may not fix it the issue. Like a hiccup, it starts without reason and stops without reason, but makes it extremely annoying and impossible to work when it does.
The worst part is that often when returning from standby, the screen may go blank, even the backlight is off. Sometimes this happen immediately on return, but sometimes it takes a few seconds before the screen dies. During the blank screen, the system is responsive. I could type my login password blind and see hard disk activity and hear the login music.
According to the Windows event log, this appears to be triggered by some phantom power button or Lid close event.
Would anybody have a conclusive idea of what might be the root cause of these problems?
I can't really have a downtime without my laptop for days sending it for repairs and hope to be able to isolate the part so that I can just call in on parts warranty and get it fixed in a few hours.

I had a similar problem with my X201 after hibernation due to no AC power and battery depletion.
I was loathe to replace the motherboard.
Then one day I tried this. Went into BIOS. Disabled, then enabled various  ports under supervisor password control. (I heard don't use extended password which encrypts. use the simple 8 character one).
I had disabled the usb card reader all usb ports. I had taken off the hard drive password I had put on earlier.
Then after a power off cycle.  I enabled the usb card reader and all the usb ports again.
Then like some miracle windows detected the SD card reader and re-installed the usb root hub drivers at the same time. For some reason it seems the SD card reader is tied to the usb root hub. Maybe it's already part of it already.
Then all the ports were working again. I was so relieved that I didn' have to call Lenovo to replace my MB. I didn't even have to update by flashing the BIOS.
It's all ok now. I like the X201 and the keyboard. From what i've seen of the X220 they've abandoned the traditional 90's style keyboard this time. I should have bought an extra X201 when Lenovo put it on special pricing bakc in 2011. Now they are completely gone from Lenovo and the prices on the major resellers of Lenovo are way too high for all the Lenovo notebooks too.

  • PSE 6 Blank welcome screen and nothing else

Started suddenly, no issues previously. Installed on an iMac running 10.5.8. Blank welcome screen and nothing else. Tried reinstalling... nothing is working.... help!

What happens if you turn off your internet and then start pse 6?
There has been a rash of posts over in the photoshop forum about photoshop cs3 doing something similar, so i wonder if it's related
since pse 6 is based on the cs3 code.
If it's the same thing, then that might be the registration screen your seeing (or not seeing because it's blank)
If you start pse 6 up without the internet on and it's the registration screen you see, press Never Register and that should hopefully resolve the issue.

  • HT1414 iPod Touch has a blank white screen and the computer does not recognise it. I have tried pressing the Home button and Up Volume button and Off button to no avail. Thank you

I tried to download an upgrade that was recommended by APPLE, the upgrade stopped halfway through and the iPod Touch was turned off, now the iPod Touch has a BLANK WHITE SCREEN and is UNRESPONSIVE to the COMPUTER
I wonder if anyone can help
    Thank you

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Hi beginner_2012,
Thank you for your post, I will do my best to assist you.
I grasp that you were getting the error "display driver amd driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered" quite often.  Then a  few days later you got the blue screen then the above error message, after 2 -3 more errors the screen is now blank or black. Here is a document to assist you with this.  Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot.

    thanks,

If you mean that it won't boot up, then assuming that the battery isn't empty (it can take about 15 minutes of charging before it will respond), then have you tried a soft-reset to see if that gets it to boot up ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo will hopefully appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

thunderbolt in MBPs do not seem to behave well with Dell ultrasharp series. http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3529/p/19458525/201488 89.aspx
    I have a U3011, and my MBP retina 15inch
(10.8.2) only sends YPbPr space to the display via miniDP to DP cable instead of RGB. If I change the settings to RGB, the color is all funny looking. For all professional purposes this is useless. Nobody from Apple or Dell is willing fix this.
U3011 only uses HDMI 1.3, so you won't get the full resolution. I also have used a mini-DP to dual-DVI adaptor. It gets RGB from MBP, the text is all garbled for anything above 1600x1000 .
I am at my wits end.

  • My ipod touch 4th gen froze! blank white screen and doesn't respond when turned off, or connected to my laptop

my ipod touch 4th gen froze! only blank white screen and doesn't respond when turned off or connected to my laptop!

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • 20" imac won't start up-flashes between blank grey screen and black screen

    20" imac
    2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Was running system 10.5.8 just fine. Worked great.
But then I wanted to give the imac to a relative. And so, I tried to boot from the original grey mac install dvd to wipe the hardrive and set the imac back to factory specs.
But it wouldn't boot off the dvd. All It would do at restart was to flash slowly back and forth between blank grey screen and black screen. So, I tried the Leopard update dvd. Same results. So I zapped the pram and tried again. Same results.
If I just pushed the start button tho.. the imac would start right up and run fine. However, I didn't want to give it to someone else with all our information on it.
I finally restarted it and held the "T" key to turn it into a giant firewire drive, hooked it up to our other 20" imac, and used the disk utility from the second imac to erase the drive of the first imac. Then I inserted the grey install dvd into the second imac and selected the drive of the first imac and ran the install process.
Now, the first imac won't start up at all. Just a continual grey screen for a bit, than a couple of buzz sounds in the machine and then the black screen... than back again.
It ran great before I erased the drive and re-installed OS 10.5
What's wrong? How do I get the machine to either boot off the install cd?

So, I've figured out a little more on the first machine. It's a 20" 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.5.8.
It ran great. But, I wanted to erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS system before giving it to a relative.
I found that although the optical drive would read and write to normal cds and dvds, the machine would NOT boot from the grey start-up disks I had on hand. ( I have two imacs, and I tried both sets of dvds without success.)
I zapped the PRAM, and used disk utilities via firewire connection from my other 20" imac to check the hardrive and make repairs. Disk Utilities couldn't find any problems. So, using disk utilities from the other imac, I erased the first imac's harddrive and then used the install dvds on the second imac to install the original OS to the hard drive of the first imac.
(looking on the hard drive of the first imac, I can see all the contents)
However, the first machine will not start up. It just switches from grey....to black..... then grey..... and then black again.... over and over
Why won't it boot from the newly installed OS on it's own hard drive?
And Why won't it boot from the original install dvds?
How can I get it to start up again?

  • After my latest update my music wont load on ipad i just get a blank grey screen and no music titles yet when i check usage it says music is there, ive tried unsync it then redoing and still nothing

after my latest update my music wont load on ipad i just get a blank grey screen and no music titles yet when i check usage it says music is there, ive tried unsync it then redoing and still nothing

Rebooting will not make you lose any content. Rebooting is when you hold the home button and the sleep button down at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
You can these suggestions. One might work for you.
Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.

  • My Time Capsule backups disappeared (blank black screens) and in trying to set it up again I now find that when TC is plugged in and on (green light) it cancels out wifi reception from my router. I am only using TC as a backup not for wifi. Help!

My Time Capsule backups disappeared (blank black screens) and in trying to set it up again I now find that when TC is plugged in and on (green light) it cancels out wifi reception from my router. I am only using TC as a backup not for wifi. Can anybody help?

Sorry, you have lost me since it appears that you have two completely separate issues here.
All that I can suggest is you start over and try to set up the Time Capsule again first...and then, once that is done and the Time Capsule is working correctly on the network....then, try to troubleshoot the separate Time Machine issue.
If you decide that you want to do this, we'll need some basic information:

I used to install the rEFIt to boot with win7. When I deleted win7, I didn't uninstall rEFIt. Nothing wrong with it. One day after I watched movie in full screen,I pressed esc to quit. Then I found the touchpad didn't work. I can't turn off air. I just pressed power button for a little while. It rebooted, then my nightmare just began...
I have tried everything, PRAM, command+R, literally everything. No change.
But when I plug a CD-ROM with USB, I can only here one BONG, just once, then white screen, Like waiting for something...
I took it to a service center in China, they told me the CPU had broken. SInce it's one month out of warranty, they wanted to charge me for like $250....
I really don't think that's CPU's problem. I checked the history, it seems like somebody else also had the problem before.
Can anyone give me some hints??? Thanks!!!!!! Or I have to take it back to America to check....

Impossible, there are zero, as in none, zip, nadda viruses for OS X. If you have viruses on it they are for MS Windows and will not affect OS X. I suspect the hard disk has crashed, if you have backup then it's not a big deal to have it changed, just take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for service. If you have not been backing it up you may be in for a painful lesson on why backup is critical.

    Try here:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
If you can't turn it off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try again.
If still problem  that indicates a hardware problem an an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

grey screen no apple followed by blue screen with vertical lines. Graphics and logic board replaced <6 months ago. What to do? I held down shift, it gets HOT HOT and makes noises. (for safety mode) followed by a blank grey screen and blue screen. Then tried the other way (sorry, I think  it's command alt delete? I don't remember) and it turned from grey (no apple symbol) to blue blank. Then third time, grey followed by blue with vertical lines, not blocky clear lines that you can see if you are close to it.
    Thanks for any help!

You have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
