X201s -- External display issues?

So I've jumped with great anticipation on the X201S bandwagon this past month, with an X201S Core i7 640M, along with a self-added Intel X-25M G2 160GB SSD running Win7 Pro.
It's a pretty sweet machine; if anything, it just outperforms anything I throw at it! However, I've been having some issues with docked power-on scenarios, where my external display just doesn't want to display anything.
I did some more digging, and I'm suspecting that this may be a firmware-related issue, since usually when the X201S feels 'happy', I get the power-on POST screen on my external display, and everything works-fine from there.
When I don't see the POST screen, I know I'm going to hit some trouble.  At this point, I'm 'headless' until I flip-open the notebook's screen, but even that screen is dark, until I login with my fingerprint reader, then start using FN-F7 (switch display), FN-F7 (again), then ENTER.  To switch display modes, and eventually OS will detect a device-driver crash on the display device, and then fall into display recovery mode (without AERO)
"Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
Further analysis, leads to Dwm.exe which was at the latest display device driver version supported by Lenovo (v8.15.10.2025), and then I recently updated it from Intel's site, to v8.15.10.2085, and still no luck.
It's definitely not a device-driver issue; since I would normally get a POST screen that is before the OS loads. Anyone have any insights, before I open-up a case with Lenovo?
Cheers

called lenovo, they just asked my driver version, system version....after verifying that my display is the latest one downloaded from lenovo, they suggested me run lenovo toolbox to examine compatibility issue....
i'm pretty sure the toolbox won't find anything...and i'm pretty sure that customer representative won't help me solve this issue...
how can we report technical related issues to engineers directly?
Current: X200, X201s (waiting)

  • 10.5.6 Update USELESS!!! External Display Issues Still remain!

The external display issues remain, even after installing the update.
    I'm sick of this!
Is it a hardware issue or software related?
Are the 9600 graphics chips defective?
Come on Apple and be honest to your customers, we all paid a lot of money for these systems!
Does anyone out there know where can I complain to?
I need an email address or something that is not directed at iphones or ipods!
    Cheers.

I'm not sure what to make of this at this point. I ordered a CTO 2.8GHz with 4GB RAM and 320GB HD the day they were announced. First week or so, few if any problems. Then the "UHF" like bands of static began to appear randomly. I use my computer 90% of the time driving an external monitor. I use a separate set up at home and work with duplicates of all cables. The problem occurs on both. I spoke with Apple Care - they patched me over to support and moved me up to Tier one pretty quick, even had me send in my System Profiler information for every combination of screen and graphics card. Then they emailed me a program to capture my monitor info again with every combination of screen and graphics card. No solution. They finally asked to "capture" my computer for their labs and sent me a new one.
Once again, about 2 1/2 weeks of smooth sailing and bam, same issues now occurring. If it's a driver issue, why is everything fine for so long? Also, 10.5.6 and the new firmware have failed to address. Given my above exchanges with Apple, they certainly can't claim they don't know about it.
I've been using Apple Products for a long time. I've seen some real buggy stuff - like when File Vault first came out but this is the worst I've experienced. Seems like poor quality control. If it's a select few machines, I appear to have won the lottery as I've had two of them.
I'm sure this issue is much more wide spread as it is a non-issue if you only use the internal display. Only people consistently driving an external display will even know there is a problem.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011 - External display issues

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" (2.7GHz version) that I am using with an external non-Apple display.  I am having issues when MBP goes to sleep or trys to sleep the display.  The external display exibits one of a number of problems:  goes dark but does not power off the backlight or freezes up and requires being powered off then back on.  My display is an ASUS VW266H but it seems like this problem, or other similar problems, are happening with other non-Apple displays.
In calling Apple tech support of 5/27/11 they indicated that this is a known bug and they are working on a fix.  There was software update released 5/4/11 to  "improve graphics stability, address issues with external display" named MacBook Pro Software Update 1.4 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1382).  I downloaded this and applied it but it made no difference.
I experienced these problems with three different video adapters:  Apple's own mini DP to DVI, Belkin mini DP to HDMI and another brand of mini DP to HDMI also sold by the Apple store.
    So the questions are:
    1) Will Apple release another updated to address this incompatability or are they done with the issue given that they released the update mentioned above?
    2) Has anyone compiled a list of monitors that are know to work with these most recent MacBook Pros (the early 2011 versions with the Thunderbolt/mini DP combined ports)?
If you have used the MacBook Pro 13" early 2011 with an external monitor please respond to this post with your experiences so we can all know what works.

With my new 2011 13" MBP I'm having no latency issues using my '08 Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW DVI (digital) monitor. Sleep function awakens fine, goes to sleep 3-4 sec.
I'm using a cheapie model Syba MDP to DVI connector; here on Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.com/Syba-High-Quality-DisplayPort-Adapter/dp/B00342UT02/ref=sr _1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1307389450&sr=8-1
I bought 2 in case one craps out on me...knock on wood. Good luck hope you find a solution.

  • External display issues when waking display from sleep

After waking my external display from sleep (the entire Macbook was not asleep, just the external display), the garbled colored dots kept appearing at the top and bottom of the screen, only then for the entire display to go black, then about 5-10 seconds later the images comes back, but with the garbled colored dots at the bottom. It will keep doing this over and over again.
It's only happened once so far, but I seem to remember reading about some issues when waking from sleep with the new unibody Macbooks with regards to external displays. Is this a known issue with these Macbooks?

There have been similar reports. However, not all external displays in combination with a MacBook will exhibit this problem. Thus, it seems either display specific or something that is caused by a cross between one display and a MacBook.
I assume that you are using one of Appe's mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters to connect to the external display. In that case have you installed the latest firmware update for the adapter?

  • External Display Issues

I recently downloaded iDisplay for iPod Touch and the server on my mac. I was enjoying having a second monitor, but i realized it was too much of a hassle to keep, so I deleted it off my ipod and my mac. But to my surprise my mac still recognizes an iPod as a secondary display even though its not connected.. I've tried fooling around with the settings in the display system preferences panel, but i cant seem to remove it. Ive tried installing the programs again to see if i didnt delete them properly, but no, i deleted the correctly and i have an invisible external display where i lose some windows. If anyone can help me with this issue it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hello community,
We have issues connecting a external display via Port replicator. In the BIOs it is not possible to select either Digital 1 or 2. During boot up no picture is shown on the external display.
This is very annoying because we want to use Pre-Boot-Authentication.

  • External display issues with Adobe CC inDesign

Since the latest OSX update (10.10.2), I'm unable to work on my external monitor in Adobe CC inDesign when the display is arranged to the top. The application launches, with menu and toolbars on the external, but fails to open the working document as well. With app frame checked, it shows the document but it's inaccessible – also, tools are pixellated.
Strangely, everything works fine with the external arranged to the left, right or bottom. I've tested it on a 27" apple display – same issue.
    Bizarre and annoying.
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013, 2 GHz Intel Core i7) with external DELL S2240L arranged to the top. Running inDesign 2014.1 (10.1.0.71 Build)

I have a similar problem. I'm working on a 15" MacBook Pro with an external 27" Apple Cinema Display. I use the huge external display for the application frame and put my palettes on the laptop's display. The external is to the right of the laptop, and I arranged the displays such that their bottoms are aligned. Since updating to 10.10.2, the application frame jumps part way down the screen (I'm guessing to where its top aligns to the laptop display). This makes the application practically unusable.

  • Early 2011 Macbook external display issues after firmware update

I have a 2011 MBPro 15". After performing the firmware update in late April, I have continual issues when I connect my monitor. The screen is blank and I can move the mouse tap the keyboard etc. The display may come up for a scond and then it will close and the machine goes back to sleep. More wiggling and the process starts over.
If I raise the lid it may bing up the external display. Restarting is the only sure fix.
I also was unable to make a presentation today because the projector I was connected to would not show the MBP display.
I tried all the key combinations, detect display etc. and nothing.
Can I somehow go back to the prior firmware? Other solutions?
    SMC Version (system):          1.69f1
    EFI Driver Version:          01.00.521

I recently did a software update to my MacBook pro and had a similar issue, on restart it gets to the apple logo then just shuts off, after multiple hours on the phone with apple care they told me that it was coincidence that it happened at the same time as the update and it would be costly to repair as it was either something to do with display or logic board. I took my MacBook into my retail location I bought it from and was told that they have had MULTIPLE people bring in macbooks with the SAME issue (I live in a really small city so the amount of people is quite large proportion wise) and that they could fix the issue by remotely resetting the MacBook at a cost of $130-$150. Relatively cheap considering what I was fearing, but if this is a common problem related to Apples update why are we paying to fix it and why is apple support saying its something major???

  • External display issue when Macbook wakes up

    Hi there,
I have an external display (Samsung 920nw) used as an extension of my desktop. When I go to sleep so does my Macbook... I close the lid and the computer goes to sleep mode within seconds (the white led on the front right slowly flashes confirming that the computer got to sleep).
The problem starts in the morning when I wake up the Macbook. The white led is still and not flashing anymore and when I lift the lid only the external display works with a poor resolution. The macbook display remains off. To solve the problem I need to detect displays and rearrange everything again between the screens.
I am not sure but I believe that sometime during the night the Macbook wakes up and he thinks that I am using the external display as the only display.
I want to lift the lid and both displays to be working as they were before going to sleep mode. Is anyone facing the same problem and/or have any clue of what is happening?
I have a bluetooth mouse and a usb hub with printer, pen drive, external hard drive attached to the macbook.
    Thanks for helping.

Could be caused by a backup drive or some other application running in the background.  There's no way to be sure without looking at your crash logs.  I keep my computer on but I always close down my apps at night to protect them from power outages.

  • External display issues only at 1920x1080

    Hi,
I've been using a small LCD monitor with a mini displayport - vga converter. Today I've bought a LED monitor that can handle 1920x1080, and its only input is VGA. Once I hook the monitor up, I get a `no signal` display. I then change the resolution to 1440x900, it works fine. I then change it back up to 1920x1080, get no signal, then after about 5 secs get display. Now, the main problem is that the main monitor goes awkward after arbitrary time period. I've taken a screenshot (yup) of the display. If i switch back to 1440x900 and then switch to 1920x1080 again it goes fine. I've resetted the PRAM. All this happens on a early 2011 Macbook Pro 13".
    Any ideas?

  • Yet another W540 external display issue...

I don't think I've seen this one here yet.
I occasionally use my W540 with an external monitor on the VGA port. When I reboot (or just boot) the computer while the display is plugged in, it starts up fine until it gets to the login screen. From there, my laptop's display (primary) is a solid gray (that is my "background" color for the Windows 8 Metro interface), and my external display is black, as it should be. I can do whatever I want, except that I cannot see anything on the laptop screen.
After logging in, the laptop is still grayed out, but the external display shows the extended desktop that it usually does. When I right click on that desktop and select screen resolution, my "ThinkPad Dislplay 1920 x 1080" is replaced with a "Mobile PC Display".  The resolution on both displays is locked at 1440 x 900 (the native resolution of my external display). All of these symptoms occur in the Intel HD Graphics configuration, as well.
Only when I restart my computer and unplug the external monitor before the Lenovo splash loads does the computer return to its normal state. This did NOT happen on my old T510 with the same display, so something is going wrong here.
I have the latest drivers installed, as this is a three-day-old clean install of Windows 8.1.

  • My external display issue is driving me nuts!

I am ready to scream! I have a newish MBP and an external SyncMaster225bw that was working for awhile nicely. Then I upgraded to 10.5.2 including the graphics update. Then it no longer worked. Next I did an Archive and Install and it was working again but in the last week it back to not working. It used to be that I would boot up my MBP (external monitor not plugged in) and then plug in the external monitor. That was after the 10.5.2 + graphics update. Then I did the Archive and Install and I could leave the external monitor plugged in. Oh, I did not install the graphics update after doing the A&I. Now, it doesn't matter when I plug in the external monitor, it just doesn't work right! Up in the Menu Bar where the Displays icon is, it sometimes isn't called SyncMaster- sometimes it's called Display. So it's not even identified correctly. Then none of the resolution choices that I have in the window display it so that it's not distorted. I click on Detect Displays and it doesn't make any difference. I unplug it and plug it in and it doesn't make any difference. And it will change the background picture on MBP also! So then I have to find the picture I want again..... The background picture for the external monitor would sometimes display but today it is the Time Machine background. Also in the Display Preferences pane, under Arrangement, it looks like the external monitor is the smaller of the 2 and square in shape which it is not. So as you can tell there are lots of issues going on and it's giving me a headache!!! I know there are others out there with the same issue or close to mine but I just had to rant. I am very frustrated as you can tell. When I get back from vacation, I can call Apple to see if they can help me but since it's not an Apple external monitor, I am not sure how much they can/will help me..... Judy

The issue was resolved ages ago but I don't remember how....... sorry.

  • White 17in C2D External Display Issues

My iMac late 2006 has a cracked screen so I have it plugged in to an external monitor. I opened it up and disconnected the inverter, webcam, and the display cable. This makes it display to my external monitor but it's having issues, the boot screen shows up to the external monitor but the screen then turns blue. Eventually I see my wallpaper and now I'm seeing the finder bar(didn't show up before) bu I can't click anything just, move around. My iMac internal screen isn't showing anything, is there any thing else I have to disconnect? Or something else I have to do?
Oh and I never saw the log in screen which makes think it's somehow still in extended display

Try pressing CMD F1 to place it in mirror mode.

  • External display issues heat-related?

I have a new late-2008 MacBook, the 2.0 GHz model, and a mini-DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter connected to my several-years-old aluminum Apple Cinema Display. After having no problems for the first couple of days, today on a couple of occasions I've had the same symptoms others are reporting - screen goes black momentarily/intermittently, what looks like horizontal pixel-thin Morse code interference, etc. So far, this has happened when the computer was busy doing a SuperDuper! backup, so I'm wondering if this might be heat-related. If I unplug the external monitor, after a few minutes things are okay again. Right now it's pretty idle, and as it was the first couple of days I'm seeing no problems whatsoever, all of which would be consistent with a heat-related problem - or many other possible explanations, too!
It's a great machine aside from this glitch.
    Doug

Well, in my case it's definitely not a cell phone - I don't have one - nor a cordless phone, since I wasn't using one at the time. My AirPort Extreme base station is immediately below the MacBook, about 2-3 feet, and a Fantom disk drive is nearby.
So far, the only times I've seen this were when I was doing a SuperDuper! backup, partway through it, and when I was doing an initial sync between the new MacBook and my Apple TV (once I figured out how to make that happen.) No browsers, no 23 other things going on, no third-party software involved.
It may be more load-related than heat-related, or it may be neither, but hopefully it'll stay infrequent and easily resolved until a real fix comes along.

  • External Display Issues in Mavericks after SMC reset

    Hi,
I have DELL ST2420L Monitor connected to 2.7 i7, 13" MBP. It worked brilliantly on Lion and Mountain Lion. I recently upgraded to Mavericks. Even after this upgrade it worked with known Mavericks sleep and awake issues. After sleep, monitor never wakes up until I reconnect the display port. This was off course irritating. I performed below tests as per many other suggestions posted on apple support site
I tried starting in safe mode and restarted. No use
Then, tried resetting SMC as described in forums. It initially gave me trouble, laptop stopped charging, then I opened the back of MBP, disconnected and reconnected the battery connector. This fixed the charging issue
Then again attempted SMC reset. This time it worked without any issues.
Rebooted. This time I noticed, MBP stopped detecting my monitor !!!
Then I performed PRAM reset, no use, monitor still not detected.
Then I reinstalled Mavericks . This did not solve the issue.
Then I hooked MBP to 40" LED, Philips TV to ensure if my thunderbolt - HDMI port is working. To my surprise, it works perfectly with TV. However i did not test original sleep awake issue.
Then to ensure my monitor works. I hooked up another HDMI laptop and tested. It works.
I then kept monitor connected and performed SMC again. This time it detected the monitor but did not resolve the original issue.
But this is not consistent behaviour. When I tried to reconnect it simply does not detect, even after explicitly clicking on hidden "Detect Displays" button in display preferences. (By holding Opt key).
Now after spending entire day I am in worse situation than before. Not able to connect my display which originally worked with Mavericks.
    Please help.

This turned out to be a cable issue. I purchased new thunderbolt HDMI adapter and it solved the issue. Perhaps this was coincidental
