X2100 Hardware Mirroring

Hi,
I have Windows server (Windows Server Enterprise edition x64 R2 with SP2) installed on SUN Fire X2100 server with single HDD; I wanted to enable the NVIDIA raid controller to have Hardware RAID (mirror).
I took the Disk image of the server, connected another HDD, enabled RAID from BIOS, and created Mirror pressing F10. But when I boot the server, it shows "NTLDR Missing"
I booted the server using windows installation CD, pressed F6 provided RAID controller driver through USB diskette drive, I could see the Drive (windows installer detected it "found another operating system already installed on the partition..." but doesnt give option to repair the installation.
___Can I create Hardware RAID on the server WITHOUT REINSTALLING WINDOWS* and its applications?___*Dell has a utility that runs on windows which enables HARDWARE RAID and detects the RAID controller on next restart.  Does SUN have such utility?
Thanks in advance

Nope, nothing wrong with it. I also wouldn't know why pre 10gr2 would not allow this since oracle only sees a 'device' anyway and this should be transparent to the clusterware. Definitely do this, especially if you only have 1 voting disk. Otherwise, failure of one disk would bring down you whole rac.

  • Install Solaris 10 5/08 on T5x40 with boot device hardware Mirrored Volume

I will have to install Solaris 10 5/08 on a hardware mirrored volume as a boot default device.
According to the "T5140 & T5240" Administration Guide" (Page 57), we have to boot the server (T5140 & T5240) on a network installation image in single-user mode (*ok boot net -s*) before configuring the raid controller using "raidctl -c -r 1 c0t0d0 c0t1d0". So, I need to have a Install Server/Boot Server ready.
Is it possible to boot from the CDROM in single-user mode and then from the CDROM configure the raid controller using "raidctl -c -r 1 c0t0d0 c0t1d0" ?
Thanks in advance for the support.

    Thanks for your reply.
I will try of course with the CDROM, It doesn't hurt ;-)
I was only hoping that someone could confirm. I suspect a trouble with the CDROM because it's not documented...
My customer doesn't have yet a Solaris server available where I could setup a boot/install server.
It means that I will have to find first a Solaris server and then setup the boot/install server to install the system (T5x40).

  • Hardware Mirroring for Voting Disk

With Oracle 10g r2 the clusterware installation now allows to use hardware mirroring for the voting disk. My question is does anyone see anything wrong with using the hardware mirroring?

  • X2100 hardware RAID support

Got a new X2100 server with two SATA disks.
I upgraded the BIOS using the Supplemental 1.1 disk. The BIOS revision reported is now 1.0.3.
Have defined a hardware RAID mirror of two SATA disks using the BIOS utility. Looks Ok and is reported as "Healty Mirror" when the machine is turned on.
If I boot Fedora Core 4 (which is not officially supported by Sun) I see two disks instead of one as expected.
If I boot Solaris 10 1/96 (which IS supported) then no disks are found!
So my question is: Does anyone know if the HW RAID system on the X2100 is supported at all? And if it is, how?

Have you looked the procedure in this manual?
    http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/html/8 19-3720-11/Chap2.html
Also there seems to be a lack of drivers available with some operating systems ( W2003 ) on the X2100, this could be the case with FC4 ( although I use FC4 on a notebook and it seems very close to RHEL 4, but without RHEL graphics, clustering and other tools ). In the InfoDoc section of the spectrum handbook for the X2100, there is a document that discusses configuring SVM on x64 systems, at the begining the author recommends using the hardware RAID utility, this may suggest that it is supported. You should take a look through the system documentation to see if you have missed something, I'd be interested to know if you set the BIOS up for the various OS types!

  • Scrolling horizontal line of distortion when in hardware mirror mode

This distorted line that appears while using Dashboard or Expose only happens when my dual screens are in mirror mode. I've tried all the obvious but have now lost countless hours trying to figure out this problem: replaced video card, replaced Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter, reset PRAM and started a fresh account on an external drive. Nothing fixes it. Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoaRfRuqFa4

Yeah, I usually go with Crucial RAM, but I wanted to see if Apple RAM was any different (it's not). I also would like to mention that my Apple Care guy is back on board trying to help me with this. He told me that there is a known issue that appears while running dual 30" Cinema Displays in mirror mode (I would have never bought this setup had I known). I guess that's why they stopped making them. Now I'm trying to get info on this graphics card to see if it's a possible fix (http://store.apple.com/us/product/TW386LL/A?n=graphic_cards&fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco =MTA4MzU2Nzg&s=topSellers). I have two concerns though. Concern #1: will this card degrade computer performance speed? Concern # 2: on a review of the card, someone said that anything other than the stock cards will not allow booting from the install disk. Wow, this is turning into a royal mess. Thanks for chiming in though. What's wrong with the 2010 Macs?

    Eric,
Generically (and generally, as well) CLI serial connections are done at 9600 baud.
That's the default that the serial ports have, out-of-the-box.
The ILOM manual for your system gives guidance how to configure such a connection.
    ( that's document # 820-0280 from Docs.Sun.Com )
( and the document is linked from the X4100 page in the SSH )
See section 2.1.2 in that document.

I'm also out of warranty and i've tried everything... resetting the pram, trying to restart in safe mode, trying to boot from a cd... .NOTHING WORKS!!! i can still control brightness itself but ive never tried attaching to an external monitor. I know everything is loaded correctly... i just don't know whats wrong. If you have any ideas.. please let me know. Also, I think apple will fix the macbook pros with a similar issue for free http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 but i know this doesnt apply for me. hopefully they work something out because I really love that computer!!!

  • Solaris 10 and Software Mirroring

    Hey Folks,
I'm attempting to configure software mirroring on a Solaris 10 system. Because this system is a v440, I'm using the hardware mirroring for the OS.
The other two drives in the system I am using for a database, and so, will configure software raid on them. However, I've done the following:
(created slice 3 and 4 on each drive for metadbs)
    prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/c1t2d0s2 | fmthard -s - /dev/rdsk/c1t3d0s2
    metadb -af -c 2 /dev/dsk/c1t2d0s3 /dev/dsk/c1t2d0s4
    metadb -af -c 2 /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s3 /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s4
    # below is the only partition i need to mirror, which will hold the
    # oracle db files
    metainit -f d20 1 1 /dev/dsk/c1t2d0s0
    metainit -f d30 1 1 /dev/dsk/c1t3d0s0
    metainit d2 -m d20
    metattach d2 d30
After running metattach, both drives syncronize, and appears to be fine. I can mount it, read/write etc..
As such, I updated vfstab with the following:
    /dev/md/dsk/d2 /dev/md/rdsk/d2 /opt/app/oracle/oradata ufs 2 yes -
    and a mount -a works..
On reboot, it seems like my mirror has disappeared:
    Can't stat /dev/md/rdsk/d2
    /dev/md/rdsk/d2: CAN'T CHECK FILE SYSTEM.
/dev/md/rdsk/d2: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
fsckall failed with exit code 1.
WARNING - Unable to repair one or more filesystems.
    Run fsck manually (fsck filesystem...).
    svc:/system/filesystem/local:default: WARNING: /sbin/mountall -l failed: exit status 32
    Jun 27 08:18:30 svc.startd[7]: svc:/system/filesystem/local:default: Method "/lib/svc/method/fs-local" failed with exit status 95.
    Jun 27 08:18:30 svc.startd[7]: system/filesystem/local:default failed fatally
You'll notice from my steps, I did not run metaroot. I cannot, since ths is not a root partition and metaroot gives an error.
Which brings me to my question, what have I missed? Why does software raid fall apart on reboot?

    Hi!
I have found these two errors too.
The second one I`m still trying to solve, but, in order to solve the first one, please, check if the parameters of you vfstab are written in the same line, like this:
#device device mount FS fsck mount mount
#to mount to fsck point type pass at boot options
    fd - /dev/fd      fd      -      no -
    /proc - /proc      proc      -      no -
    /dev/md/dsk/d2 -      -      swap - no -
    /dev/md/dsk/d1 /dev/md/rdsk/d1 /      ufs 1 no -
    /dev/md/dsk/d4 /dev/md/rdsk/d4 /etc/opt/OV ufs 2     yes -
    /dev/md/dsk/d5 /dev/md/rdsk/d5 /opt/OV      ufs 2 yes     -
    /dev/md/dsk/d3 /dev/md/rdsk/d3 /var/opt/OV ufs 2     yes -
If not, Solaris 10 does not recognize the parameters that are written in the line below. (Don`t ask me why).
    Hope it helps,
    Regards,

  • Mirror RAID on partitioned drive

Can you Mirror a partitioned drive (boot plus data)? thanks

thats no problem reformatting just wondered if I had a boot partition and a data partition how does a mirror work - automatically on both partitions or do you create two mirrors one for each partition<</div>
I know on my "hardware" mirrored RAID, it all automatic. Any information or partitioning written to the "primary" drive is instantly "mirrored" to the "secondary" drive. Mirrored RAID drives are configured to be "exactly" identical, that's why you need matching drive capacities as well as manufacturer.
As for "software" RAIDs, I'm sure they are setup the same way, except the computer takes over the process of making sure the information is the same on both drives. On my HW RAID, I don't even need it connected to a computer to do a HD restore.

    hardware mirroring 2nd set (2 -> 3)
    1) Is it wise/safe to turn on write cache for OS mirrored disks?

    2) Is it wise/safe to turn on write cache for 2nd mirrored disks?
2nd mirrored set will be used strictly for Oracle logging. Assume write cache will increase write-intensive logging effieciency with no 'ill' effects.

  • Showtime Anytime HDMI mirroring

I wish someone could explain digital rights in a way that actually makes sense to most human beings, but that's not the point.
I have HBO and Showtime from my cable provider. Very useful. I have the HBO and Showtime Apps on my iPad and iPhone. They both work perfectly, though I've never used them outside of my home WiFi network, so who knows if it's very useful.
Of course, I have HBO and Showtime on my Apple TV. With no discernible logic, I cannot use those Apps on my Apple TV, because....who knows. My major cable company is not included on the list of approved providers for the Apple TV apps.
But it gets weirder. My iPhone and iPad HBO and Showtime apps have more seasons of programs than my cable company's on demand system. For example, if I want to watch all 4 seasons of Boardwalk Empire, I can do it on HBO to go, but not on my cable's On Demand system. That's just ludicrous.
Now HBO allows me to do Airplay streaming through Apple TV, so this is good. Showtime, illogically does not allow AirPlay. This is well known.
    TL;DR
So here's my question: I know there are no workarounds to AirPlay blocking, but I was considering buying a Lightning to HDMI cable for my iPad, hoping that the hardware mirroring will work perfectly. It's a $50 proposition, so I don't want to get it if the app blocks Airplay as well as HDMI mirroring. I couldn't find an answer in searching the internet. People seem to conflate Airplay with HDMI mirroring, so I can't dig out an answer.
I just wish my Apple TV could get the content, because it's so much faster than Cable's On Demand system, but a temporary fix is better than nothing.

I  just bought the digital av adapter, hoping to mirror my iPad screen onto a spare TV in my basement while working out.  Generally works well (HBO, YouTube, Netflix), but showtime gives me a message that it's not supported.  Apparently only works with the apple TV (built in app, not mirroring or AirPlay). Thinking I might just break down and go roku instead.

  • Logshipping vs Mirroring

    hi Team,
we have 10 databases each database having min 350 gb,
    here we are paling to
replication the data from production site to  DR site.
To replication the data which one of high availability is best like "log shipping" or "Mirroring".
we have only two options "logshipping" or "Mirroring".
if we can go for "logshipping" what are the benefits, or we can go for "Mirroring" what are the benefits are available.

It would be best to determine what your business requirements are like max allowed data loss and how much time can the apps be down while you are
recovering the systems during HA and DR.
You did not mention what version of SQL you are using but, if it is SQL 2012, then you can consider AlwaysON with Syncronous REPLICAs for HA and
async REPLICAS for DR where the data is replicating across sites using SAN replication. Here are some benefits of log shipping and Mirroring
    Database Mirroring benefits:
    Instantaneous synchronization of changes
    Easy setup and maintenance
Automated failover (in High Availability Mode)
    Easy to perform failover
Fast failover. (if no transactions are queued)
Applications can be mirroring aware using failover partner parameter in connection string
    Database Mirroring limitations:
Limited number of databases can be mirrored per SQL instance. (however, this number is higher than the 10 you see plastered everywhere, but really depends on your hardware)
Mirrored database cannot be queried, backed up, or basically touched in any way (snapshot can be taken however)
Only supports one to one server pairings
Cannot mirror a database more than once
Synchronous mirroring is intolerant to latency and bandwidth constraints (Asynchronous mirroring has no problems with latency or bandwidth)
    Log Shipping benefits:
Very flexible - Independent jobs govern backup/copy/restore behavior
Delay of restore job can protect from database corruption
Log shipped database can be queried. (in standby mode)
Log shipping allows multiple standby databases
Perhaps more tolerant to latency than sychronous mirroring.
Doesn't affect performance of primary server
    Easy setup
    Log Shipping limitations:
    No automated failover
Cannot synchronize faster than once a minute
Failover is more complicated than mirroring
Harder to view status of log shipping

  • Recommendations for external backup hard drive...mirrored

My external hard drive that I used with Time Machine to backup my MacBook has bit the dust.
Ideally, I would like to get one that has hardware mirroring. At least 1gb. and Firewire 400 compatible.
It's the mirroring feature that I'm having trouble finding. Anyone have a drive they are happy with? Or can you point me in the right direction?
    Thanks

My favorite mirroring or cloning application is SuperDuper! which can be downloaded [Here|http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html].
As far as an external drive is concerned, I've had tremendous success with Western Digital drives. I've used several desktop models but recently purchased a portable (2.5") 750Gb Passport Essential SE because of it's size and portability. After formatting it for Mac, I remember that I needed assistance from the Internet for instructions to remove the pesky windows only WD backup software from the disk. It was simple to remove but it involved an update in order to get rid of it.
