X220 Clean Install: It is time.

I've had an X220 for three years now running essentially the original factory install, which I restored from the built-in back up onto an mSATA SSD (80GB Intel 310) and then imaged over to a replacement (256GB Plextor M5M) last year. I'd like to now do a clean install without losing my existing Lenovo  Windows 7 Professional license. There was a sticky, or something, about how to do this, but the link inside led to an IBM-hosted site that no longer exists. Any advice on this would be appreciated.
BTW - I do, in fact, have the original Lenovo backup discs somewhere, however, I'd like to do a clean Win7 installation and then add drivers and software as needed, to get rid of the cruft and ensure the best possible performance on my SSD (which is admittedly limited by the SATAII speeds of the mSATA port).

Hi alanbrenton,
Did you put this one in there.
This has to go with the Hotkeys and Power Manager.

  • Clean install? Restoring Time Machine backups?

First let me say I'm relatively new to Mac, I've graded my iMac (Late 2013) to the latest OS, Yosemite. To say that they computer is dragging is a major under statement. Applications such as AutoCAD, anything Adobe (Photoshop, InDesign), Word, etc. drag. By "drag" I mean upon launch the icon bounces for a good 3-4 minutes and the program does not load. Switching profiles? Forget it, spinning pin wheel, 10 min. in I just restarted it. Its unbearable. I assume that I will have to do a clean install. Will Time Machine restore applications, or is this for documents only? Most of my software is from online subscriptions not disks which means this going to be a serious endeavor to wipe the computer and start all over. If anyones has a better idea of how to go about this, I'm all ears.

    Hey spodonahue,
It seems like you are saying that your Mac is running a little slower than normal. Here is an article for you that will help you address this issue:

  • HT1338 Can I do a clean install after using time machine backup?

Can I do a clean install after using time machine backup?

Hi, if I understand correctly yes, but may I ask the purpose of doing so?

  • Permission issues after Snow Leopard clean install, Migration Assistant+Time Machine restore.

    Hello, here's the situation.
I've done a clean install, for various reasons, I've got backups including one done just before the clean install. Following directions somewhere else I set up a user account called "test" just for the purposes of reimporting PART of my old system, since one of the reasons I did the clean install was to clean up my system (get rid of all those little ghosts of old programs, the old programs themselves, files and settings I not longer want etc.) so I didn't want to just import the whole thing. So I imported just the user account and a few folders such as music and photos that I knew I wanted back on. Then I restarted so that it would log back into my old user account that's been restored using Migration assistant. So far so good. I enter time machine and start restoring Applicatons, their associated support files, a few preference panes, some other files and folders I want back on, so and and so forth. Then I enter my old home folder and see that many of the subfolders I don't have access to, I check their permissions with Get Info and see that read/write access has been granted to my test account, which is ridiculous since it didn't exist when they were backed up. Some searching reveals that on the first Time Machine back-up after a restore like this it should as at the start whether I want to inherit he old backups, so I tell Time machine to do a backup, figure that it shouldn't take much, seeing as there's nothing new, and I've put it all in the same place as in the backup. It doen't give me any such prompt, instead just starts indexing/preparing hundreds of thousands of files, and tells me that the backup should take about 135 gb of space. I stop the backup, give up on working this out myself, and come here. Help?
    Of note
The "harddrive" (it's a partition, I've got Windows on the other part) is not named the same as it was in the backups, would this affect it?

    I'm not familiar with Lightroom.
Where is the "Lightroom 2 catalog" folder in the second message, and what are it's permissions?
Note that +Repair Permissions+ only repairs permissions on files installed by OSX or certain Apple apps, and you should use the version of Disk Utility that's on your OSX volume, not your Install disc. See: [About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452].

  • How to get iPhoto and iTunes to a clean installed Yosemite from Time Machine

I wiped the Hard Drive and clean installed to OS X Yosemite. For Some reason, some of my Time Machine back ups disappeared or got deleted and it wasn't even full. I had back ups from 2011 and now it only starts from 2013 of June.
Next....when I try to restore my other apps(like iPhoto and my iTunes) I doesn't give that warp space effect in the background. It gives me the window layer effect but I just see the same mountain background on the desktop as the default Yosemite(unless thats how its suppose to look like that?) I can't restore using Time Machine because the little lines at the right are red (see screen shot) and it won't let me restore, and if i go back by using the arrows, if freezes. So,
I don't know how to install the old iTunes and iPhoto on my existing clean installed Yosemite from my Time Machine.
    Can someone help me?

@ LarryHN Thank you ver much for you help I understand now that you just can't copy over the old library(got it)
I had the latest version of iPhoto before I cleaned installed.
The link you gave me was most informative and I want to thank you. But still problems arrive.
This came up and I don't know which one to pick

  • IPhoto won't open after clean install followed by Time Machine restoration of data.

    Hello.
I've just completed a clean install of OS X Yosemite followed by a restoration of my data from a Time Machine backup on my Mid 2010 iMac i3 3.2GHz.
Since the install iPhoto will no longer open. The icon in the dock bounces for a short while and then I receive the following error: iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. It then shows problem details and system configuration, the top part of which I post below:

I then get a long list of binary image data which I haven't posted here (but can if required).
I believe the version of iPhoto I have is 9.6 as that update was installed a short while before I did the clean install of the OS.
I would try reinstalling the iPhoto again but cannot see a way to uninstall or to download again from the app store.
Has anybody seen this behaviour before and/or know of a fix or workaround so I can get my iPhoto program working again please?
    Many thanks for your time.
    Alex

Looking at that report I would reinstall iPhoto as a first step:
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Clean installed Lion 3 times, still has incredible slow down.

I'm no stranger to this kind of stuff, so I've really never had any purpose to post here. I've always figured it out. So when I say I'm stumped, please know I mean it.
I recently purchased an OCZ Solid 3 120GB SSD and decided to install Lion and do it by way of a clean install. Everything went fine until I actually started to use it. I let it index, knowing that slows things down incredibly. But even when that was done I still would get the beach ball frequently and things would just stop until it was done spinning.
I've verified permissions, repaired them even though it came up with no errors. I started over a total of three times so far. I've searched the forums and google high and low. Still find nothing concerning my issue. I have a late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro with a 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo and 4Gbs of RAM, so I know I'm good on the hardware front.
Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

  • How do a clean install from Time Machine Backup which is in other partition of internal hard drive

I have 2 partitions in my internal hard drive they are
    1. Mac OS (Sysem Files)
    2. HDD (Other Personal Documents).
I did Time Machine Backup in HDD partition. So now i want to do clean install from the Time Machine Backup without format the whole drive since my system not booting meant that system crashed and cant boot in anyway (Just consider ). Also I have MAC bootable USB stick.
    Thanks in advance .

Having never seen a setup like that, I'm not sure how it will work.
In theory, just erase the Mac OS volume, then install, choosing to recover from a Time Machine backup.
When you boot into Recovery, open Disk Utility and select the Mac OS volume, not the whole disk. Erase it, then quit DU and restore from the Time Machine backup. However, this is the part I'm not certain of. I would imagine the partition with TM backup will be mounted, but I don't know.
If you can't see the Time Machine backup from the Recovery HD on the drive, try it from the USB Recovery stick (it is a Recovery USB and not the old Lion install USB, correct?)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718
If you don't have a "built-in" recovery HD because of your partitioning, then you would have to boot from that USB Recovery disk.
Your setup is severely flawed. A backup on the same drive as the data is not a backup. You will lose everything with a disk failure.
Also, partitioning off your OS on a Mac is not necessary and is probably counterproductive. OS X is not Windows.

  • I've tried to eliminate system errors by performing a clean install of ML. What's the best way to set up my iMac for a singlet user?

One of my main goals is to be able to run a Windows application on my iMac, purchased in July, 2012, with the Intel 2.5Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive. At first I installed Boot Camp and then Win 7, then the application I need to run, and I don't recall having problems. But I tired of the required reboot each time and got greedy and needy - so I installed VMWare Fusion, only to be told that the W7 software I use won't work with Fusion, but it will with Parallels! So, I was able to get Parallels at a discount (because I had Fusion), and decided I would import Boot Camp into Parallels.
Then the problems began. I suspect I did something I shouldn't have during this process, but to shorten the story I did a clean install of ML, set up iCloud, and monitored Console for problems. And problems there were - lots of them, and they all seemed to reference iCloud in some way. Since I have the ML installer on a thumb drive I thought I'd see what happened if I did another clean install, but this time I'd ignore iCould altogether (yes, I have everything backed up to mypcback.com) and proceeded. As before, the errors streamed down Console's face as if it were my own. I've run OnyX, which seemed to help, but many of the issues persist. I'm at a loss as how to proceed other than invoke Apple Support, which, BTW, is not covered under Warranty.
I need to have a stable ML platform before I start using W7 and refuse to believe that the OSX is "just buggy." Can someone help. I have no other iDevices that need to be synced, and really don't see the need to set up iCloud. Noone else than I use the iMac. It should be pretty simple to create a stable OSX so I can go where I need to go. I realize 4GB is not a lot of memory and will look into that. For the moment, I can stip down Win 7, and OSX for that matter, to free up memory. I didn't want to included a bunch of log files, but I will if someone thinks that it would be helpful.
The follow are the latest entries into my system log file, after I lost connection to the internet, and then regained connection after rebooting my cable modem:

This DNS change is only the lastest manifestation of what seems like an endless list. Can anybody give me some direction before I have to pay Apple to fix what I think they broke themselvesa?!?  BTW, I am not a tech. Thanking everyone who read this and especially to anyone who can help.

Linc, thanks for the tips. I knew you'd have a good method. I asked for it because I have learned of some of the myths about OSX and it's need (or lack thereof) to be scrubbed, rinsed, and blown dry; suckering folks into buying all manner of utilities to keep your Mac spiffy at all times, when in fact it rarely needs any intervention at all because of its Unix background. In fact, I rarely shut mine down and I've learned that the system is actually designed to be left running under most circumstances.
To keep your data secure the three most important things to know is backup, backup, backup. I use a third-party, cloud-based back-up system. It can automatically make backups every hour if that's what I want and I can supplement that anytime by simply dropping a file into the application's desktop interface.
Since I last posted my Mac has been running smoothly and I've been able to install Parallels and Windows 7, as well as the VantagePoint software I mentioned. Though it crashed once this morning and I submit one line from the log file:
    12/20/12 10:31:00.639 AM appleeventsd[54]: BUG in libdispatch: 12C60 - 1510 - 0x4
After a reboot, log entries spewed all manner of troubling messages, from those that are osascript-related to broken forks, etc. but as far as I know there were no actual crash logs generated until this afternoon, one being just a few minutes ago. Linc, would you be so kind to take a look and tell me if there's something I need to do?

  • Clean Install mavericks? CC question

    Hi,
I know how to clean install mavericks on my mac as that's very simple but:
I know I should deactivate Creative Cloud on this machine first, But it's not deactivated on my time machine backups so:
When I reinstall from my time machine backup all my files and apps this isn't going to work with Creative Cloud is it? as
the Time Machine backup will reinstall a fully activated version of Creative Cloud completely messing up my adobe account and
making Adobe think I've installed it fraudulently on a third Mac, (copy already installed on another as allowed in the licence agreement).
It will see this as a third copy I think.
I hope you can see what I mean from this explanation of what I think will happen if I try a clean install from my time machine backup.
What is the correct way on a Mac to do a clean install and reactivate Creative Cloud please without using up a licence.
It's so confusing the possibilities appear to be endless for mess-ups.
    Thanks

    Hi Kuldeep,
I'm sorry you got me confused for a second there, you started talking about un-installing when I hand't mentioned it and this confused me with my first replly to you. I don't think you read my question, I'm not talking at any time about uninstalling the apps I'm talking about deactivating, completely different with on my web connection about 6 hours difference in time.
What I don't know is what I asked above:
I already know about the licence agreement as I'd stated so why did you tell me like I hand't mentioned it?
Rather than I repeat myself could I ask you to read the first post before replying. I don't mean to be rude but you can't have read it to come back with your answer.
    Thanks
    Bill
I will repeat is a slightly different way just in case this helps anyone:
(On a computer that already has a registered copy of CC on it but needs re-formatting):
    1: I can deactivate CC
2: I re-format and restore my computer from it's time machine backups
3: The copy of CC on my Time Machine backups is not de-activated is it? I don't know how this would work (this is the crux of the problem that I won't be able to fix afterwards).
4: If it is deactivated, can't see how, but everything is fine and I carry on and the problem is solved.
5: If it isn't deactivated Adobe think I've installed CC on a third computer without permission and get very upset and put my account on hold and stop me from earning money.

  • How many times can you clean install leopard on the same computer?

How many times can you clean install leopard on the same computer? Will the leopard dvd run out of installations and not let you install anymore?

    Hi colman Prez;
Now that the funny comments have been made, I have a serious question and that why are you worry about reinstalling Leopard with an Erase & Install which is what I take that you mean when you say clean install. In actually fact there is no such thing in OS X as a clean install.
I am curious because in all the years I have used OS X, I have yet to do an Erase & Install yet.
I know with Windows that they suggest reformatting and reinstalling at the drop of a hat but that isn't true with OS X.

  • Hard Drive Erase, Clean Install and Time Machine

I am currently running OS X 10.10.3 and I want to do a clean install. All my content is backed up with Time Machine via external drive.
First, how do I erase my hard drive and install a fresh version of OS X 10.10.3?
Second, is it better to use a USB drive for the clean install or just you the Recovery Mode?
Last, once i finally have a clean installation of OS X 10.10.3, am i able to access my external drive via time machine to bring back some of my old files...i have read that the folder in the external drive is not accessible and not accessible through time machine.
I appreciate the response and guidance!

    Hello Jacob,
All of these are good questions to have when erasing and installing OS X Yosemite. To answer your first question you would need to boot to either your Recovery HD or through the Recovery USB and follow the steps in the first article below. Either option will get the task accomplished and will install OS X Yosemite. For your final question about restoring from a Time Machine back up, you will see the option to restore when going through the setup process of your Mac. Let me know if the information below is of help or need further assistance.

Some MacBook Pro versions cannot be upgraded past 10.6.8; others are maxed out at 10.7.5. newer models can go all the way to 10.10. So it is important to know exactly what version you have--there may be close to 40 variants produced since the MB made its debut in 2006.
You can safely give us a snapshot of your model and its current config that will allow us to deternmmine your model and its upgrade potential, plus show it you have any software that may impede any upgrades. Please download and install this free utility:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
It is secure and written by one of our most valued members to allow users to show details of their computer's configuration in Apple Support Communities without revealing any sensitive personal data.
Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance.
Remember that, on leaving OS10.6.8, you lose the ability to run older softare written for older PowerPC Macs (yours in Intel-based). Programs such as Office 2004 will no longer work (min of Office 2008 needed to work on newer OS versions), and AppleWorks will stop working completely

    I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.
I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.
Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.
The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling.  Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?
    Thanks
    paul

This isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

I had recently upgraded from Mt. Lion to Mavericks from app store. But after few months I thought it was being buggy and slow. Last week after taking a complete time-machine backup I formatted the computer and clean installed Mavericks again. Now I am trying to restore just few handpicked applications one by one. Most of the apps are either not working or asking me for keys. Is there any other way to restore apps from Time Machine? Because all I see is that it just copy pastes the folder from the backup, and does not restore the prefe

If I were you, I would not restore your applications from the backup, more if you want the preferences back. Performance issues will be back and you may need to reformat the hard drive again.
Instead, the best thing you can do is to reinstall your applications manually, so you will not be transferrind files you do not need
