X220 dead(?) fingerprint

Hello to all.
I am a..somewhat happy fresh owner of a X220, model 4287-2SG,in short Core I5, Ultrabase, IPS display, TPM & fingerprint. The ram size is 8GB.
I did not have any fan or whining issues as a lot of people here, but... the fingerprint is somewhat dead. It appears ok in device manager, the Thinkvantage diagnostics show the usb (connection?) to it ok. The problem is that I cannot enroll any fingerprints. The FP worked ok fora while, but after that...it wouldn't be recognized at boot, or in windows(the green light won't turn on when I was suppose to scan my finger. The curios thing is that at that time, the bios authentication by fingerprint and also power on worked ok. At this moment, windows sees the upek device ok, any usb monitoring utilities show it as connected to the usb port, but the lenovo fingerprint software always gives the error(s):"can't enroll user; can't find fingerprint device".
As troubleshooting I did the following:
a) restore the factory image and then all win updates;
b) used UPEK diagnostic software (TCSDiagnosticTest21.zip ) from http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/tools/diagnostic.asp which returned code/error 70 - device is not calibrated;
c) I've contacted UPEK support and they sent me another diagnostic tool which worked once or twice, and then gave a similar error: "Cannot calibrate fingerprint device - Illegal argument"; they said it's a hardware problem and that I should contact lenovo;
d) "mounted" the usb device in an vmware win xp and installed the upek protector software; the error was: calibration error(-1080);
e) tried to enroll some fingerprints with fp-demo from ubuntu: when I am supposed to move my finger over the sensor, its green light doesn't turn on so...nothing gets enrolled;
f) flash all bios-es that I could find(1.11, 1.15, 1.16, 1.17)
[you can get 1.17 from:
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj07us.txt
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj07us.exe
don't worry, the bios is in english];
g) also checked/uncecked the ""let windows turn of this device" option in device manager;
One more thing: at every cold boot, just before you are supposed to press F12 for boot devices etc, the sensor's red light turns on for 1/3 sec. I've also disconnected it from the system board for about 1 min, but the result is the same.
The symptoms above appeared randomly for a week, but after that the sensor is stuck in this..state.
I'm using also the TPM chip and Lenovo Client Security 8.3.
That would be it.
My questions would be:
a)  is the sensor dead? to be onest I've never heard of such a thing, but whatever...
b) is there a way to perform a hardware reset of the sensor?
c) if the sensor is dead, why does windows sees it ok in device manager? ->
d) is it possible that the internal sensor's database is somehow corrupted or/ there is some kind of communication mismatch between the sensor an the systemboard's ..bios/electronics/something? Like...the bios sends unencrypted data, but the sensors waits for encrypted data?
e) if I speak to a lenovo service center, is there any possibility that they send me the part that contains the fingerprint sensor and after i do some tests, I would return the bad part and/or the laptop assuming that the fp sensor is not the problem?
That would be ideal because I prefer not to let anyone disassemble ...my 1300e toy;
f) is there a general hardware reset of the systemboard? I suppose  could remove the system battery, but..something more..straightforward?
PS -  for those interested, the IPS displays also has burning simptoms, but for now...it's useless to change it. Maybe in 6 months once lenovo changes the lcd manufacturer. To be onest I'm kind of disappointed of the purchase; my old elitebook 8530p had no such problems from the first month and obviously, no lcd burn-in(but it wasn't IPS).
PS 2- sorry for my english, I'm not exactly a native english speaker
Best regards...

Thanks for the reply!
Nope... standard WIN7 x64 image shipped on the recovery partition.so.no UEFI.
One more ...detail.. in the windows system logs appears an error regarding WUDfrd.sys driver(something like "WUDfrd failed to load for the xxx device", where xxx is the VID unique code corresponding to the fingerprint sensor; the Microsft online help says that this is related to driver/hardware malfunction...As I am the only one that has this problem, I guess it is the last one...
Not a (first) nice experience with Thinkpads...
Best regards...
LE: Authentec/UPEK support's conclusion was short and simple: FP partially dead (technically half dead, must be replaced); Ive contacted lenov support about this issue; I will keep you informed...
2011.07.02 -> Final Edit:
The fingerprint was replaced (actually the palmrest) and everything is ok now. The Lenovo support was very helpfull and I wish th thank them for that. All updates are to date (including windows updates)
The conclusions are:
The finerprint is (hardware) faulty if:
 - it fails the PC Doctor for Dos test;
 - using the  UPEK diagnostic software (TCSDiagnosticTest21.zip ) from  http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/tools/diagnostic.asp returns code/error (bin) 70 - device is not calibrated AND upon contacting UPEK support and following their instructions, the conclusion is that the fp has hardware problem.
 - you cannot eroll fingerprints in linux using fprint-demo package(ubuntu);
 - only the sensor's red light blinks for a second at a hard boot or when inserted into the docking station(for a a healty fp both the green and red leds flash for 1/3 sec);
Other observations: - the sensor's power management in not disabled in device manager and for now it seems to be working just fine(only time will tell). The same us true for the usb hub that the sensor is connected to.The UPEK diagnostic utility (TCSDiagnosticTest21.zip ) now shows a green 1 code which probably means everything is ok.
In the ending I would like to thank Lenovo's support for their wonderfull cooperation in resolving this issue and UPEK's support for their fast response and professional attitude regarding this problem.
Thank you all for your time, ideas and responses.
Best regards...

  • X220 dead ips display - return instructions?

    Apologies if this has been covered somewhere in the forums and I missed it.
    I have a new X220 with the IPS display and after a couple weeks of use, the laptop display no longer works.
    The laptop seems fine otherwise, and it works with an external display port monitor.  When I have the monitor in mirrored mode, I can see a faint- not-readable screen on the laptop.  I'm certain that it is not just the brightness setting, as I can turn that all the way up with no effect (and view the brightness dialog working both on the external and barely perceivable on the laptop monitor).
    It seems like my display was just a lemon (maybe the backlight for the screen was poorly soldered/connected?).  Has anyone else experienced this?
    Regardless, my tolerance is pretty low for hardware failure so I'd like to unload this laptop with maximum velocity.
    How do I go about doing that?

  • X220 Dead.

    My x220 went to sleep today, and stayed that way. When it starts up no, all I get is the power button solid green and flashing every second. Spoke to lenovo, they had me unplug the battery and power, hit the power button 10 times and hold it for 30 seconds on the 11th push. this did nothing.
    I pulled my drive, cmos battery etc out and still nothing.
    They are going to now replace the systemboard. not good!

    that is rather unfortunate, but i think it is an isolated case.

  • X220 dead pixels from top to bottom

    I have had my X220 Tablet for 18 months (purchased November 2011), my one year warranty expired (received no notification it was going to expire back in Nov 2012) but had no problems at all during these 18 months.
    Now, I just turned it on today (July 3rd, 2013) and had a vertical blu-green line from top to bottom at 18.5mm from the left side of the screen. I figure a whole line of pixels of one color (red) had gone off, so it is not a single pixel, it is a whole line.
    I use this convertible tablet about 20% of my time, my workhorse is provided by my workplace (a Dell convertible tablet).  So I was surprised that with so little use the screen has gone bad so soon, and just six months after warranty has expired, and it seems it may get worse.
    I also thought when I purchased it that the screen was LED, then found that it is a LCD with a LED backlight.
    Is the only solution to replace the IPS screen (it's has a multitouch panel)? or is there a software or BIOS solution?
    And if the solution is the replacemente, approximately how much the replacement screen costs?
    Any help, suggestions are appreciated.

  • X220 Fingerprint enrollment problems post domain migration

    We recently reinstalled our 2008 R2 domain moving it from a SBS to a full server environment. We maintained the original domain name and re-created the users with the same credentials. I am using a X220 which runs Win7-64.
    Following the joining on the new domain my fingerprint continued to work and log me on to the new domain however it wasn't behaving properly within Internet explorer continually asking for my password to be re-entered so I decided to try re-enrol all fingerprints. I used the Lenovo fingerprint software and the first thing that stood out was that there appeared to be no fingerprint to delete when I logged on, however when I went into the configuration it has the option to manage enrolled fingerprints. It showed nothing however it showed that I had 19 free enrolments still possible.  After I exited from this screen I now had the option to delete previously enrolled fingerprints which I clicked on and chose all rather than the my user options.
    Following this I rebooted and went into the bios and selected to erase the fingerprint reader within the bios and rebooted back into the system. At the logon screen it advised me no fingerprints were registered and that I should enrol some. I logged in manually and went to the fingerprint enrolment assuming everything was now reset. I then attempted to enrol my right index finger and the system advised me the finger was already enrolled, so I went back to fingerprint management option which still showed no detail however it now shows 21 free fingers. I noticed also that my left index finger is enrolled however I am free to enrol other fingers.
    I now ensured that I had the latest Client Security Solution software 8.30.0.53-64 and Fingerprint software 5.9.5-64 and still I have the same issue. I have even fully uninstalled the fingerprint software and used the Windows biometric software which also reflects no finger prints however when I try enrol those fingers it advises already enrolled?
    What do I do?

  • X220 Fingerprint Reader Counsumption

    Hi,
    i really like the fingerprint reader - power on function but i wonder how high the power consumption is?
    Does it stress my battery noticeable  when i don`t use the Notebook for few days?
    Thank you and excuse my english

    After my X220 is powered off for 24 hours (but fingerprint reader still active), the power meter says about 6% of the battery capacity was consumed (6 cell battery). This means that with the laptop powered off, the fingerprint reader might completely drain a 6 cell battery after 2-3 weeks.
    I discovered that after power off (or hibernate), if I briefly pull and reinsert the battery, it seems to completely turn off the fingerprint reader including the LED. When the X220 is turned on the next day, the power meter stays the same. This seems to be a possible workaround. I suggest doing it if you plan to leave your X220 powered off for more than a couple of days.
    I hope that Lenovo can fix it to make the fingerprint reader active only while the screen lid is open. There is no reason to leave the fingerprint reader on while the lid is closed. Or turn on the fingerprint reader only for one minute after opening the screen lid. That would preserve battery life even if you leave the lid open.

  • X220 Many problems: backlight bleeding, fingerprint throttling, hot 65 watt adapter.

    I am having 4 issues right now:
    -Backlight bleeding (lots of it)
    -Fingerprint reader wont turn off when laptop is off. (im using UEFI, option in settings is missing)
    but mainly
    -CPU THROTTLING even when in high performance mode
    -65W adapter gets VERY HOT
    I called lenovo tech support. They make it sound like it's just me. They are also NOT willing to replace it with a 90W adapter.
    I am very dissapointed and will likely be returning this unless someone from lenovo helps fix my issues...

    Excessive backlight bleeding is a defect. Call Support and open a Case. Give them a chance to fix it. If they fail, then you can return it without a restocking fee. I don't experience this with my X220 or I would have returned it.
    Fingerprint reader staying on is a feature, not a bug, a nice alternative to the two step process of power button and then swiping.
    CPU throttling occurs because the 65W Adapter is unable to deliver enough power for full performance and the BIOS throttles the system to stay within the power available from the Adapter.
    65W Adapter getting hot is normal -- it's being pushed to its limit. What the X220 needs is something with a bit more capacity, like 72W.
    My solution to (3) and (4) was to buy a slim 90W combo adapter on eBay at a real bargain price.
    I consider it a small price to pay for what is otherwise a very good price for a very good machine
    (albeit not as good a machine as we've come to expect from the ThinkPad brand).
    Hope that helps,

  • X220 - New IPS Screen LOTS of dead pixels

    Hi,
    First post here but looking for info on a really bizarre problem.
    tl;dr - Installed 2 separate IPS screens and both had identical dead pixels in an unusual pattern.
    My X220 is out of warranty for starters, but I ordered a replacement IPS panel off a reputable source on eBay to replace my existing TN panel as an upgrade.
    Upon receiving it, I had a weird shape of dead pixels in the bottom left corner of my screen which was in the shape of the number 3 - very unusual looking.
    I then RMA'd the screen and received a new one .... however I have the same problem.
    A weird shape down the bottom left of the screen which is full of dead pixels - about 20 black pixels in total.
    I tried using 'unstick' kind of applications to get the pixels working again but had no joy.
    Once I fit my TN panel back on, the issue disappears straight away.
    Between each IPS screen, I actually replaced my i5 motherboard with an i7 motherboard, so it can't be the onboard graphics that's causing the issue.
    2 separate mobos, 2 separate screens ... same problem.
    Common factors are inverter and also the cable for the screen... but if it's working fine on my TN panel, I can't see that as the problem.
    Here is a picture of it - hopefully someone can shed some light on this before I try RMA this one as well.

    Welcome to the forum!
    Dead pixels cannot be fixed by swapping the LED card or cable, it's a defect on the panel itself.
    I can only speculate about a bad batch of panels, getting two with the same mistake is not something happening every day I guess.
    I'd send it back and ask for a new panel.

  • X220 came back from depot with one dead pixel on new replaced panel

    I bought my X220 on May, 2011. It was working great up until last month when suddenly several dead pixels(around 5) appeared on the IPS panel. They were dark dots scattered on the mid bottom part of the display, and were invisible only on dark images. I tried various stuck pixel fixing programs for several hours with not good result.
    I called the support number for Canada, explained the issue and immediately got a call number and a box was on the way.
    Yesterday I received the X220 back after a week and half, which is quite fast for what I expected the service time to be in Canada. When I turn on the machine I immediately notice some backlight bleed on the bottom on the screen given that the old one didn't have any. I thought it would not bother me since I could only see it if displaying dark backgrounds, which is rare for me once in Windows. But I also notice one dead pixel on the mid bottom right of the screen, and it looks darker and bigger than the ones in the old screen. Anytime I'm looking at anything bright colored I see it.
    As of now, while I'm at work the X220 is running UDpixel at home to see if it gets fixed. I was wondering if Lenovo would grant me another repair call seeing that the dead pixel bothers me more than the ones in the old panel, although it is only one.

    @pacho,
    You can try taking a picture of the screen showing the backlight bleed and try contacting support and see if they can get it replace again. Do let them know your previous case number as well.

    Hi eylattouf, welcome to the HP Forums.  Thank you for the well crafted question!
    So if the Fingerprint driver is not installed, or apparently not being recognized, check the device manager to see if there are any unknown or errored devices listed. You can show hidden devices under the 'View' menu as well. If there are errored or unknown devices, remove them before installing the Validity drivers. After that restart the computer, and install SimplePass.
    Here are the drivers for the fingerprint sensor: Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver
    and the SimplePass software: HP SimplePass Identity Protection 2011 Software
    As well, here is a generic troubleshooting document, which you can go through to make sure it is set up correctly:

  • X220 Will Not Charge When Primary Battery is Dead with Slice Battery Installed

    I have got it to do this twice so far, so looks like a problem.  My wife always puts her X220 to sleep versus shutdown.  Sleep still uses some power apparently which is fine.  It looks like it is draining only the primary battery even though the slice battery is connected.
    The issue is that with the primary battery drained and the slice battery connected, the TP will not power up.  Plug the power adapter into the slice battery and still no power up.  The slice battery charged to 100% with it pluged in, but the primary battery would not charge.  Plug the power adapter into the X220 directly and let it charge for a moment, then everything works as it should even if you then move the power adapter back to the slice battery.
    So if the primary battery is dead, the slice battery and charging the primary battery through it seems to stop working under this scenario.
    Obviously not a huge deal since we now know what causes this, but maybe someone wants to fix some day.
    I am using BIOS 1.16 and have been for a while.

    hey DevItHere,
    have you tried updating your bios and at the same time uninstalling the power manager for your X220 and reinstalling it ?

  • How to configure X220 to ignore power button and only boot via fingerprint reader?

    Hey all, sorry if this has been answered. If it has I haven't seen it.
    Is there a way to set the BIOS to only bot via a successful fingerprint swipe? this seems like such a better way of doing things. I am interested in security, but only so interested that i can swipe a reader instead of hitting a button; putting in a password every time and that is way too much effort for me. But when I swipe an unregistered finger, the computer stays off. When I swipe a registered finger, it turns on. Thats awesome. Now how can I make it so I ONLY can turn it on that way instead of just pressing the power button?
    Solved!

    welcome to the forum!
    short of physically modifying your keyboard, it's not possible.   if for some reason the FPR were to fail or fail to read a configured finger then there would be no way to turn the system on.
    the system is no more or less secure with an enabled or disabled power button.   anyone who really wants your data and actually knows what they're doing doesn't need a working power button to get it.

  • Refurbed DV7 Laptop - Fingerprint reader dead

    Hi All,
    I know there have been a few posts on dodgy fingerprint reader issues, but this one is different to any of the other posts I've been able to find on here (/anywhere else on the web).
    The fingerprint reader doesn't seem to exist other than physically on the laptop base! It doesn't show when running Simplepass (2012/Validity edition) or bootup, there's nothing related or unknown/erroneous showing in the device manager and under Biometric Devices it says there are none detected or 'may be in use by other programs', but I'm guessing it's the former, not the latter.
    I've got the Pavilion DV7-6154ea which was an as-new refurb that I got last week.
    It's running Win 7 64 bit and has literally nothing done to it since I got it, other than the standard start up procedures and running though all the essential Windows updates, however this problem has been around before and since installing the updates, so it's unrelated to that.
    My guess is that when it was refurbed they didn't reconnect the reader, but I'm reluctant to start tinkering with the innards of my shiny new laptop, even though I am confident/experienced enough that I could should I have to and even had confirmed from PC World, who hold the warranty, that this wouldn't invalidate it (there's a long story as to why they aren't covering this repair for me!) But hopefully it won't need invasive surgery and a few software pills will do the trick.
    Cheers for any help you can offer guys!
