X220 dead ips display - return instructions?

Apologies if this has been covered somewhere in the forums and I missed it.
I have a new X220 with the IPS display and after a couple weeks of use, the laptop display no longer works.
The laptop seems fine otherwise, and it works with an external display port monitor.  When I have the monitor in mirrored mode, I can see a faint- not-readable screen on the laptop.  I'm certain that it is not just the brightness setting, as I can turn that all the way up with no effect (and view the brightness dialog working both on the external and barely perceivable on the laptop monitor).
It seems like my display was just a lemon (maybe the backlight for the screen was poorly soldered/connected?).  Has anyone else experienced this?
Regardless, my tolerance is pretty low for hardware failure so I'd like to unload this laptop with maximum velocity.
How do I go about doing that?

  • Touching edges of X220 IPS display causes hibernation. Horrible customer service!

    When I touch the edges of my X220's IPS display, the machine goes into hibernation/sleep. Adjusting the tilt angle of the screen can also cause this. Problem is really bad and unpredictable. I called this in to Lenovo support to have the screen replaced and I am getting the royal run-around. The operators taking the service call info have absolutely no idea what they are doing! And I don't mean technically! They just keep making excuses! It has been 3 days and I have yet to have a tech call me to meet to replace display. I keep calling Lenovo and the operators don't have a clue as to how to handle this! "All I can tell you sir is I will make a notation".  "You'll have to wait until Monday for a tech". What? First, has anyone had this problem with the IPS display, and second, this is my first Lenovo product and I love it but what's up with the warranty service? Does Lenovo have a reputation for this?

    Here's 4 service providers close to you.  You could try calling them direct. What number are you calling anyway?  Do you have onsite warranty?
    As far as your problem goes, it sounds like the lcd cable might be chaffed or kinked.  Or maybe a loose connection on the cable. It's not a common problem, but it happens.

  • X220: Coloured pixels starting to shine through IPS display

    Hello,
    I have and actively use my X220 for roughly two and a half years now and am so far happy with it.
    However, lately I noticed coloured pixels, or rather what looks like sub-pixels shining through the "display" when I set e.g. a black background or at boot time.
    It goes from the left to the right but only at the top of the screen. I have the x220 with the IPS display.
    I attached two pictures of the most intense spot, roughly a tad to the right from the top-center of the display). Unfortunately, my camera does not quiet focus that close, I#ll try to get a better shot of it soon.
    As you can see, those aren't dead pixels per-se, as their size waries. Looks like the screen is "used" and the "paint" starts to come of. Not sure how I could describe that, really.

    During my time of ownership I have always been careful of my machine, so there was no rough handling. I use it everyday as my primary machine though, but most of the time with 1 or 2 external monitors.
    Does anyboy else have this problem? Is it solvable? Could I stop the process somehow?
    Thanks a lot!

    It seems as you have the first revision of the IPS panel that is known to have issues, especially the excessive image retention (persistence) issue. Assuming you have 3 years warranty I would ask for replacement.
    On the other hand I have one of last X220 (having the second revision of the display) boxes and noticed the issue as well. Fortunately it is one red subpixel only yet.
    Is there any improvement when you keep the display turned off for at least 48 hours ?

  • X220 IPS display backlight issue (with photos)

    Hello,
    I've purchased the Lenovo X220 laptop with the Premium HD IPS display and I do have a problem with it (see below).
    Laptop was purchased something like month ago and I've spotted this after I've started to work with it more heavily but after 14 days, so I was not able to return it to the seller (http://www.lenovoonline.cz).
    When you put backlight to maximum you see that the display is not evenly lighted and forming bright spots on the bottom of it. It's most noticable on the black background.
    I've sent notebook for repair (http://www.pcnet.cz) with this description (translated to english):
    "With maximum brightness set and the black display/background (eg. BOOT screen) on the bottom edge of the display there are visible white spots/maps. Small but visible and not even with different sizes. It's most visible on black background and while limiting external light (darker room, working in the night). Spots highlights even more when you try to pull the display towards you into steeper angle."
    The laptop has been in the repair for 2 weeks and the result was this description:
    "This kind of display is very sensitive to any pressure, and it will result in the brightening the place. It is specific for this model line and it's not the reason to warranty repair. We recommend to lower the brightness level in the darker room. Check of the display frame has been done and no problem has been found."
    Later they said they've replaced the panel too.
    However the issue still persists (see attached photos).
    Let me say few words about this:
    display is showing the spots while in rest I'm not touching it, if it's sensitive for pressure than it is indicating that there's some pressure on it while mounted in the frame
    I want to have backlight lighting the display evenly on the whole surface area, that's the correct function of a product anything else is NOT
    if they claim this is how it should be and it's actually a "feature" of the PREMIUM display then if I had known I would choose regular TN display and even save some money, needless to say that in that case the word PREMIUM sounds like a bad joke
    after lowering brightness level problem doesn't go away, still visible just gradually slightly less, depending on the brightness set
    if you are working in the night without external light this is VERY irritating
    So my question to you X220 community is, do you happen to have same issue?
    as they say it's "normal" with X220
    Thanks
    EDIT1:
    I've done a search now and it seems I'm not alone with this issue
    PS:
    I'm attaching two photos.
    First is the X220 (booted into GNU/Linux with X running and mouse as reference).
    Second is the very old Z60m (booted into Windows and running blank screensaver).
    Compare for yourself which one you would prefer.
    It was shooted in absolute dark (I'm used to work like that) with Canon EOS350D on tripod.
    There are some slight artifacts which you normally not percieve but anyway I think it clearly shows my point.

    Yes, at maximum brightness level the backlight bleeding is very visible but I use it at 5 or 6 level where it has excellent contrast ratio considering how crappy current notebook displays are in general. The uneven backlight is caused by fancy LED backlight which is still not able to deliver similar quality regarding uniformity as good old CCFL backlight (that's why professional LCD monitors still rely on W-CCFL backlight). But I agree that the top-left corner is way too much bad and might indicate that the panel is seated badly in the frame. On the other hand my old IPS panel in R51 also have backlight bleed at maximum brightness level.
    Major problem is that Lenovo is still not able to fix the stupid bug with brightness level always set to max in BIOS screen that the backlight bleeding is very visible and irritating everytime you boot your machine.
    IMHO, the X220 IPS panel is still much better than any ugly contrastless TN panel Lenovo puts into ThinkPads (except 15" FHD). I bet that you would hate the X220i TN panel more than this one
    There are also two different revisions of the IPS panel, the second one fixes problems with image retention. As for comparison with Z60m, X220 display lid is much more fragile so the panel is not protected well against pressures and flexes. In any case panel flex should affect the backlight bleeding temporarily only. If it persists it is subject to repair (replace, reseat etc.).
    Unfortunately I don't have any good low-light camera that takes useable pictures in dark environment so I can't post relevant images of the backlight bleeding.

  • X220 dead(?) fingerprint

    Hello to all.
    I am a..somewhat happy fresh owner of a X220, model 4287-2SG,in short Core I5, Ultrabase, IPS display, TPM & fingerprint. The ram size is 8GB.
    I did not have any fan or whining issues as a lot of people here, but... the fingerprint is somewhat dead. It appears ok in device manager, the Thinkvantage diagnostics show the usb (connection?) to it ok. The problem is that I cannot enroll any fingerprints. The FP worked ok fora while, but after that...it wouldn't be recognized at boot, or in windows(the green light won't turn on when I was suppose to scan my finger. The curios thing is that at that time, the bios authentication by fingerprint and also power on worked ok. At this moment, windows sees the upek device ok, any usb monitoring utilities show it as connected to the usb port, but the lenovo fingerprint software always gives the error(s):"can't enroll user; can't find fingerprint device".
    As troubleshooting I did the following:
    a) restore the factory image and then all win updates;
    b) used UPEK diagnostic software (TCSDiagnosticTest21.zip ) from http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/tools/diagnostic.asp which returned code/error 70 - device is not calibrated;
    c) I've contacted UPEK support and they sent me another diagnostic tool which worked once or twice, and then gave a similar error: "Cannot calibrate fingerprint device - Illegal argument"; they said it's a hardware problem and that I should contact lenovo;
    d) "mounted" the usb device in an vmware win xp and installed the upek protector software; the error was: calibration error(-1080);
    e) tried to enroll some fingerprints with fp-demo from ubuntu: when I am supposed to move my finger over the sensor, its green light doesn't turn on so...nothing gets enrolled;
    f) flash all bios-es that I could find(1.11, 1.15, 1.16, 1.17)
    [you can get 1.17 from:
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj07us.txt
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj07us.exe
    don't worry, the bios is in english];
    g) also checked/uncecked the ""let windows turn of this device" option in device manager;
    One more thing: at every cold boot, just before you are supposed to press F12 for boot devices etc, the sensor's red light turns on for 1/3 sec. I've also disconnected it from the system board for about 1 min, but the result is the same.
    The symptoms above appeared randomly for a week, but after that the sensor is stuck in this..state.
    I'm using also the TPM chip and Lenovo Client Security 8.3.
    That would be it.
    My questions would be:
    a)  is the sensor dead? to be onest I've never heard of such a thing, but whatever...
    b) is there a way to perform a hardware reset of the sensor?
    c) if the sensor is dead, why does windows sees it ok in device manager? ->
    d) is it possible that the internal sensor's database is somehow corrupted or/ there is some kind of communication mismatch between the sensor an the systemboard's ..bios/electronics/something? Like...the bios sends unencrypted data, but the sensors waits for encrypted data?
    e) if I speak to a lenovo service center, is there any possibility that they send me the part that contains the fingerprint sensor and after i do some tests, I would return the bad part and/or the laptop assuming that the fp sensor is not the problem?
    That would be ideal because I prefer not to let anyone disassemble ...my 1300e toy;
    f) is there a general hardware reset of the systemboard? I suppose  could remove the system battery, but..something more..straightforward?
    PS -  for those interested, the IPS displays also has burning simptoms, but for now...it's useless to change it. Maybe in 6 months once lenovo changes the lcd manufacturer. To be onest I'm kind of disappointed of the purchase; my old elitebook 8530p had no such problems from the first month and obviously, no lcd burn-in(but it wasn't IPS).
    PS 2- sorry for my english, I'm not exactly a native english speaker
    Best regards...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thanks for the reply!
    Nope... standard WIN7 x64 image shipped on the recovery partition.so.no UEFI.
    One more ...detail.. in the windows system logs appears an error regarding WUDfrd.sys driver(something like "WUDfrd failed to load for the xxx device", where xxx is the VID unique code corresponding to the fingerprint sensor; the Microsft online help says that this is related to driver/hardware malfunction...As I am the only one that has this problem, I guess it is the last one...
    Not a (first) nice experience with Thinkpads...
    Best regards...
    LE: Authentec/UPEK support's conclusion was short and simple: FP partially dead (technically half dead, must be replaced); Ive contacted lenov support about this issue; I will keep you informed...
    2011.07.02 -> Final Edit:
    The fingerprint was replaced (actually the palmrest) and everything is ok now. The Lenovo support was very helpfull and I wish th thank them for that. All updates are to date (including windows updates)
    The conclusions are:
    The finerprint is (hardware) faulty if:
     - it fails the PC Doctor for Dos test;
     - using the  UPEK diagnostic software (TCSDiagnosticTest21.zip ) from  http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/tools/diagnostic.asp returns code/error (bin) 70 - device is not calibrated AND upon contacting UPEK support and following their instructions, the conclusion is that the fp has hardware problem.
     - you cannot eroll fingerprints in linux using fprint-demo package(ubuntu);
     - only the sensor's red light blinks for a second at a hard boot or when inserted into the docking station(for a a healty fp both the green and red leds flash for 1/3 sec);
    Other observations: - the sensor's power management in not disabled in device manager and for now it seems to be working just fine(only time will tell). The same us true for the usb hub that the sensor is connected to.The UPEK diagnostic utility (TCSDiagnosticTest21.zip ) now shows a green 1 code which probably means everything is ok.
    In the ending I would like to thank Lenovo's support for their wonderfull cooperation in resolving this issue and UPEK's support for their fast response and professional attitude regarding this problem.
    Thank you all for your time, ideas and responses.
    Best regards...

  • How can I tell if my X220 has IPS?

    Hi, everyone,
    I just got a new X220, and I'm trying to figure out what to look for in terms of appreciating the IPS. (I indeed ordered it for the machine).
    It seems bright and fairly easily viewable at an angle, but I was kinda expecting more.
    Anyone?
    Also, I installed a fresh copy of Win 7 Pro. Does anyone know if there is some sort of Lenovo driver package combo I can install, instead of taking the time to individually download and install each driver separately?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Allow me to cut against the grain here:
    Under normal conditions and casual use, you might not notice the difference of the IPS display at all. The benefits are: excellent range of colors, contrast, and a little extra brightness, all things that won't dramatically improve spreadsheets and documents...
    ...but most of all, you get better viewing angles.
    Thinkpad X220 vs Thinkpad X201 viewing angles
    The value of good off-axis viewing angles may seem elusive, but I wish every computer had a screen this good. For instance, right now I'm sitting cross-legged with the X220 resting on my feet. I've pushed the screen back so that it's almost flat 180 degrees like the picture above--a normal laptop screen would wash out and show bluish inverted colors at that angle, but with the X220 the image is still very good and the colors are maintained. It ends up feeling like I'm reading a text book or magazine instead of a laptop.
    It's the one feature I waited for when choosing a laptop, and the X220 is the only affordable way to get one of these screens on a Windows machine. --iPads and some Android tablets have IPS LCD screens, but the only other Windows computers to use them are $1,100 tablets like the X220t or Asus ep121and some $2500 workstation laptops. For the record, the MacBook Airs and Pros lack IPS.
    The screen does loose a lot of brightness when viewing from off angles as visible here, but so does the iPad, if less so.
    If nothing else, the X220 offers the IPS upgrade for only $50, even on the lowest model with the i3 that goes on sale for $749 sometimes.
    I suggest upping your gamma a couple of notches also. It does trade some image quality, but I find that it lets me get away with using lower backlight brightness in return. I've read that the IPS backlight is a bit of a power hog.

  • How to populate right side of Shuttle with display/return values?

    Hello,
    I know, that the proper way to populate the right side of shuttle is that:
    declare
         v_list     apex_application_global.vc_arr2;
    begin
         select profile_name return_value
           bulk     collect
           into     v_list
           from     user_profiles
          where     user_id = :p61_user_id;
         return (apex_util.table_to_string (v_list));
    end;It is comfortable for the user to see the name of the profile.
    However, I need a profile_id as a return value, like I have it on the left side of the shuttle.
    The left side of the shuttle is populated with a select list with display/return values, as you know.
    I need both sides of the shuttle to return profile_id in order to create a merge.
    How is it possible to populate the right side of the Shuttle with display/return values?

    All you have to do is to use the subset of shuttle query to assign value to the right side shuttle.
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=50942:95
    I have created a dummy page with shuttle query
    SELECT ename, empno FROM emp ORDER by 1then I have defined a pl-sql before header process to assign values to shuttle variable
    using the code
    begin
    :P95_SHUTTLE := '7566:219:7900:7782:90';
    end;since 90 is not one the result set of the shuttle query it is getting displayed as number, and for others it is displaying the text. Thanks.

  • Second IPS display via hdmi not displaying 2560x1440. Why?

    I know the graphic card hardware in my 2013 i7 mac mini support hi-res hdmi because people are running Windows 7 on their mini's with dual 2560x1440 ips displays. I read that this would be resolved in Mavericks but I can't seem to get above the 1080p resolution. What am I missing? Do I need to reset something? Was I better off sticking with my old 2009  mac mini with the mini display and thunderbolt port?
    Thanks
    Andre

    I've received several different answer regarding your reply. The monitor tech support person stated that the hdmi port on the display is 1.3b which will support that resolution. So either both of the hdmi cable that I tried sucked or the support person lied and or OSX is limiting the hdmi port.
    I guess I'll just purchase a Startech USB32DPPRO adapter since I can't get the answer I want.
    I hate that Apple took away the second mini/thunderbolt port.
    Thanks for your assistance.

    You didn't mention other parameters of your recursive method, so I am not guessing but here is an easier example.
    public class Test{
         public void resursive(int num) {
              if (num == 1) {
                   System.out.println(num);
                   return;
              resursive(--num);
              System.out.println(num);
        public static void main(String[] args) {
              int num = 3;
              Test myTest = new Test();
              a.resursive(num);
    1
    1
    2
    recursive(3) -> recursive(2)                                          // print 2
                    recursive(2) -> recursive(1)              // print 1
                                    recursive(1) -> // print 1It would print the last one first because the upper one would call itself first before print out the value.

  • Anyone have a decent W540 IPS display profile?

    I just received a W540 with the hi-res IPS display.  I didn't order the X-Rite builtin calibator because  I have an xrite i1 pro calibrator and their software and I can calibrate it myself, and I hadn't heard very good things about the builtin's results.  However the results I am getting are really horrendous.  It's not the calibration device, because I use that with Spectraview and my NEC PA271 with fine results.  There are color shifts throughout the greyscalewhen I run x-rute's iProflier software on the W540 display.  If anyone could post or send me a decent profile for this display it would be much appreciated.

    Interesting, I never bothered looking before.  I have 421, including 131 in the winsxs folder just hanging around
     (I'm sure that you know that .icm and icc files are interchangeable, so you need to count both types)

    Yes.  This is the standard directory for color management profiles.  Other applications keep their own, like X-RITE on my computer, and Adobe.
    >I find the last most  [Right-Function key], the one with the cute little folder pictogram and the [Fn-F12] key so >useful. What a great idea to help locate files quickly.
    Can you enlighten me on this?  Both keys do the same thing on my computer, just open a new explorer window. Not sure why I need both.  Can't figure out what the [FN-F11] key does at all.

    hello,
    I am having a dynamic select list with display, return value
    say for example my select statement is
    select distinct dname d, deptno r
    from dept dt
    right join emp e on (e.deptno=dt.deptno)

    when i tried this query for my select list, it is not working. It saying that
    " LOV query is invalid, a display and a return value are needed, the column names need to be different. If your query contains an in-line query, the first FROM clause in the SQL statement must not belong to the in-line query. "
    I am not able to understand the problem. Can anyone help me out with this issue?
    thanks.

    Shouldn't your join have dept as the driving table?
    select distinct dname d, deptno r
    from dept dt
    right join emp e on (dt.deptno = e.deptno)
    where (condition)
    Or using older Oracle standard join
    select distinct dname d, deptno r
    from dept dt, emp e
    where (dt.deptno (+) = e.deptno) AND (OTHER WHERE condition)
    OR
    (Since a right join is just getting the values from the driving table that are NOT in the associated table)
    select distinct dname d, deptno r
    from dept dt
    WHERE dt deptno NOT IN (SELECT deptno FROM emp) AND (OTHER where condition)

    can anyone help me display returned tables in adobe
    interactive forms
    i have an 2 adobe interactive forms, one for input
    the other for output on 2 different views
    the input form takes a few parameters, calls the
    back end RFC and the
    output form displays okay, but i just get the last
    row from the table
    i've tried binding 1 of the output table parameters to a drop down box and subform,the drop down box displays
    one of the return parameters but will not drop down
    whenever i include a subform i get a java error on
    the output form with no display
    i know there are several rows returned from testing the rfc inside abap workbench

    Hi Dennis,
    To display table in Adobe forms.
    Follow these steps :
    1. Insert one sub furm.
    2. make its type to flow content and flow direction to Table in object property.
    3. Insert another subform in above sub form and makes its type to flow content and flow direction  to Table row.
    4.In binding tab for this subform check the checkbox for "Repeat subform for each Data Item" and in min count you can specify at a time how much rows you want to display.
    5. Now place your UI Elements for Data view into this sub form.
    6. format these ui elements as you required.
    Run application now u can see multiple rows in adobe forms, if you have multiple elements in your table node.
    Let me know the status.
    Regards,
    Bhavik

  • "Dead" TB display as of this morning

    I didn't install the 1.2 firmware and I have the same "dead" TB display as of this morning. It was working yesterday. I unplugged power cords for more than an hour, tired a new LAN cable…nothing. My monitor is only 6 weeks old. Does anyone have ideas?
    I have a 2014 MacBook Pro.

    More information needed for someone to help... please click below and provide the requested information
    -Information FAQ http://forums.adobe.com/message/4200840
    Also, what you describe is USUALLY caused by an automatic Windows update (are you Windows?) that "breaks" something in the graphics display driver as it relates to PPro
    So... what is your graphics adapter, and have you gone to the vendor site (NOT Windows Update!!!) to check for a newer device driver
    IF you have an nVidia card, How to determine your nVidia driver version
    Right click in any open area of the Windows desktop
    Select NVIDIA Control Panel from the popup window
    Select SYSTEM INFORMATION at the lower left corner
    Driver version should be the 1st line in Details
    I have a GTX285 using driver 296.10

  • Display returns latest data value rather than maximum data value.

    I have requested the Maximum value using the Statistics VI.  The display returns the latest value rather than the maximum.  I think it may have to do with specifying the sample size or data packet size but I don't know how to do that.

    You probably are only taking a single reading with the DAQ Assistant and the Statistics function expects an array to determine the max value in that array. There are a couple ways to do what you want. One way is to use the Array Min & Max Single Point function (Signal Processing>Point by Point>Other Functions). This has a sample length input and a reset input. Another way is to create an array with a shift register and use the Statistics function or just the Array Min & Max function. You could limit the size of the array with Array Subset for example.

  • Battery Recall return instructions

    Hello,
    I recently received the replacement battery for my iBook G4. Unfortunately I don't appear to have received any instructions telling me what to do next.
    Can anyone please help me out by telling me what number I need to call, what I need to quote etc? I live in the UK.
    Thank you,
    Russell

    Hi Russell and welcome to Apple Discussions.
    When I received my replacement battery there was a 6 page booklet enclosed with instructions about discharging the battery before return, packaging and labelling instructions, a prepaid return label with reference # and a phone number to ring to arrange collection.
    If you haven't got this booklet I would either ring Apple support or a local/national control centre for the courier company that brought your new one. Mine was brought by UPS I think but check your delivery note/packaging. You have still got the packaging that the new one was delivered in…? The old one is supposed to get sent back therein
    On balance, Apple is the first to contact if you haven't got return instructions…
    Good luck,
    Adrian
