X220 IPS Screen Color Problem (red is orange)

Hi Guys,
Just received X220. Excellent one ! However, I am having some problems regarding color accuracy. Screen seems more warm. Red tends to be orange and green appears more yellowish. I came to know that this is a generic problem for IPS ( HP ENVY 15 also has this issue). Does anyone notice this? Is there any fix for it?

It's actually not problem of IPS screen, but the problem is with the original non-IPS screen. Lenovo's screen is severely blueish, it has a very bad color accuracy. If you are adopted to the original screen, you will find IPS is warm and not accurate. But I can assure you if you search for benchmarks about the IPS screen, it is a perfect screen in terms of color accuracy. Although not as good as Apple IPS, it has the same level of color accuracy.

  • X220 Screen Color Problem

Hi have a serious issue with my X220 IPS screen.
after replacing the screen under warranty (flickering) everything was working perfectly.
Then after a couple of month I took my x220 out of my carry on luggage and a band of about 5 cm on the right side of my screen was behaving weirdly (at the beginning it was intermittent but it became soon a constant, stable, problem)
Better than any description you can see the problem by looking at these images:
    Figure 1
    Figure 2
Figure 3 (Good part of the screen)
Figure 4 (Bad part of the screen)
Looks like some of the dark colors are inverted...
What do you think the problem is? LCD panel? Connector cable? MotherBoard? Graphic card(Integrated intel)?
looking forward to hear your opinion and SOLUTION!!!
    Thanks
    Andrea

  • Gradient banding on X220 IPS screen

Over on the Faint Ghosting on X220 IPS screen thread, I mentioned (twice, actually) that I see gradient banding on my X220 IPS screen. Nobody else has brought up this issue, and at the moment it seems that I may have a defective screen.
Here's a test image to check for gradient banding: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gradient.php. View and compare how it looks on other laptop and desktop monitors. Gradients appear smooth on my desktop PC (Dell monitor and low end Radeon card) and MacBook Pro, but banding is easily visible on my X220 with IPS screen. I even see faint banding when I view this forum, the subtle gradient background at the top of each post. My display is set to 32 bit color and 60 Hz refresh.
I'll take it up with Lenovo support. Meanwhile, anybody else who has the issue can post and discuss here.

I have the exact same problem.
When there is a gradient (like on the login screen, or the webpage linked earlier) I can see the image moving for a couple of seconds. This kind of behavior from the screen also makes my eyes painful after a while.
I love this laptop otherwise, but this is a terrible quality issue. I tried to explain my problem to lenovo with no luck.
Anyway, from what I read here, it's common to most x220, what can I do.
If at least lenovo was helpful. Or if they could let me return the laptop without the absurd 15% restocking fee...
Edit: Alright, found by myself after a couple of hours searching: The moving bands when the display is "adjusting" to the new picture is in part due to Intel's power saving tech "Intel Display Power Saving Technology" which can be disabled in intel's control panel. It causes flickering of the screen in general, but mostly gradients.
For those wondering, yes, it does save some power. The computer idling with this feature uses 10 watts. Without it's 11.  I don't know how it'll affect battery life, but if I really need longer battery life, I'll turn the brightness down myself.
I still notice some flickering, I'll see how it goes. The banding, while now static, is still clearly visible though.
Maybe someday they'll learn LG is not good at IPS screens (see the ipad2 fiasco too)

Try running in Safe mode.  This leaves out some video drivers.  Which results in machine not using advanced video hardware.

  • Unique X220 IPS Screen Problem

I couldn't find anything about this, I'm having an issue that one day just came up on the x220's ips screen. This isn't ghosting or white spots. Its hard to describe but its basically a large semi transparent rectangle on the screen that becomes darker as the screen flexes. Sometimes you can barely see it and other times it is really clear.
Heres two pictures to hopefully illustrate the problem.

you could possible try to reconnect the LCD cable and see whether that helps. If not, then it is most likely that you are in for a LCD replacement.

  • Faint Ghosting on X220 IPS screen

    ADMIN EDIT:
There are two items being discussed in this thread:
    1) A backlight bleed issue as described by SR45 - we are investigating this, but have seen only a couple users noting this so far.
    2) "Ghosting" or persistence of  an after-image phenomena after a static image is maintained on the display for 15 or more.   This comprises the bulk of the discussion on this thread.
Not all customers have observed this, nor view it as an "issue".  See related thread with counter point.
I've already posted on the notebookreview forum and thought I would also leave a message here as well to cover all forums to get some more feed back.
I have tested this out a few times now, and I get a faint burn in (ghosting) when using a dark background and even  a light blue backgrounds when rebooting the system immediately after downloading and installing some software.  When this was first noticed, I just booted up to IE 9 and the google page with my favorite sites on the extreme left side for about a minute, than I rebooted the system.  During the boot up, I could see the faint outline of the task bar at the bottom, the favorites vertical line that seperates the favorites from the main google page.
One or more members with the X220 on the notebookreview forum have noticed the same thing, and wonder if anyone else has seen this as well.  Trying to figure out if this is wide spreed or just a few bad panels.
    Thank you
One picture of the vertical line is posted on the link below.

I have the exact same problem. I noticed that I was getting this pseudo burn-in (and also quite a lot of backlight bleed). I returned my x220 and ordered a new one, same configuration. The new one just came, and it has the same ghosting problem as the first. Note that the ghosting does not take hours to occur: all I need to do is leave my web browser open for about fifteen minutes and then switch to another screen with dark background, and the UI elements will appear faintly burned into the screen, all over whatever text I'm processing (I use a text editor with a dark background, for programming). This is totally unacceptable, and I'm very disappointed. At this point, I don't know what to do: I've tired both linux and windows, and returning the laptop for a new one. It seems like I am going to have to return this second one too, and I don't think I am going to try and get a third laptop. This is very disappointing, because the rest of the compter is very nice.
Has anyone NOT had this problem with the IPS displays on the x220? Has anyone had this problem and fixed it? Can someone from lenovo please comment? More than anything, I want to be able to own this laptop and like it, but I can't when I've been convinced that the "premium" display has consistent defects.

  • X220 IPS screen flickering

Bought my X230 in August 2013 (so I'm still under warranty), used it mainly for school. It's been about a month since school's been finished and my X230 has jsut been on my table at home. Lately it's been displaying a black box with flickering lights on one part of the screen. It appears and reappears when I tilt my screen and it's been getting worse throughout the last few days. Anyone know what the problem is? Is it the LCD cable? I contacted a local Lenovo service warranty provider on email but they haven't replied yet.

Cable connection and cable is the easiest to check. There is high probability your LCD controller board that is at fault. May require a new LCD.

  • All x220 and x230 IPS screens have backlight bleeding issue?

There's a 48-page discussion on the backlight bleeding of the x220 on the Lenovo forums (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Faint-Ghosting-on-X220-IPS-screen/td-p/435201). There are also many smaller threads regarding problems with the x220 IPS screen and to a lesser extent the x230 screen.
I recently purchased an x230 and experienced bleeding. Due to my onsite warranty IBM support came and replaced the screen- but the new one still had bleeding. Another engineer came out, brought a new back-panel (because the flex of the panel seemed to be causing it) and said "this isn't broken- I have seen lots of x220s and x230s with this problem- its a design default".
Could I challenge Lenovo to provide me with an x230 IPS screen which does not bleed?
I cannot believe Lenovo released/designed a laptop with such a glaring (no pun intended) fault.
Has anyone here got an x230 (or x220) IPS screen where there is absolutely no backlight bleeding on a dark background?

All X230 and X220 LG IPS will have some degree of bios bleed, it is just matter of severity.

  • Finding out whether my X220 has an S-IPS screen

    Hello,
I've bought an X220 but I am not sure whether it has an S-IPS screen or not. (there are 2 here and we got confused and now aren't sure)
So what would be the way to find it out, take the laptop apart and look at the model number or could I check it out through software? What would model number be of this part?
    thanks

haha yeah just tilt it vertically and watch everything turn negative on a TN screen.
    Not so on IPS.
I love My X220 IPS screen. I just wish i could get higher resolution.

  • X220 IPS - blinking screen (sore eyes)

    Hello,
I'm writing about one issue with laptop x220 which I've found few weeks ago.
I bought the x220 a few months ago but I have not used it actively till last weeks. I like this laptop but there is one problem which prevents me use it in full production,
It is about screen blinking which hurts my vision. I see it permanently and my eyes are got tired very quickly. Actually I can not work with this laptop more than 40 minutes! After this period my eyes are red and I feel headache.
This blinking is barely perceptible but I see it and my relatives see it as well. I'm not sure the problem is only in blinking, but this screen really hurts me.
For information, I have T61P as well and this laptop don't have this problem. Moreover I worked on T420 and T520 and they are normal too.
Could you please advise me what can be done?I like this laptop and want to fix this problem.
    Very appreciated
P.S. I have 1.21 BIOS and latest monitor and video drivers. 60 Hz is selected as refresh rate in driver settings

    AlTov wrote:
I have exactly the same problem. The IPS screen on x220 hurts my eyes!!! On 60Hz.
    Lenovo, wouldn't you answer please?
    welcome to the community.
first, please make sure that you're running the most current video driver (8.15.10.2769). you can get it here:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-77280
this is the driver matrix for the x220 and it usually has new drivers before you'll see them in tvsu.
once you've got the newest driver installed, have a look at this thread:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-uncontrollably-switches-to-50Hz-refresh-r...
specifically on the last page, the third post (by bananaman). you'll need to set two parameters in the intel graphics control application. no need to hack any drivers or edit the registry as other workarounds suggest.
please post back and let us know if this solves the issue for you.
    cheers.

  • Red color problems in LR 4.1

Have LR 4.1, CS6, Windows 7, use AdobeRGB1998, PSD, color managed with Eye one display 2, RAW images.  Rarely take photos of red subjects, so have not seen this problem before now......wedding with 10 bridesmaids in "coral" dresses has uncovered a problem.  Am seeing difference in red colors within LR, from the Library to the Develop mode/views they are different..  When saving PSD to the web as sRBG, colors of red are garrish, not at all true to the original PSD doc.  Sending jpegs to Walgreens for my family shows very wrong colors, ranging from pink to orange to too-red.  Anyone else having these problems?

Go into your develop panel and softproof one of these images for sRGB. Turn on the monitor and profile gamut warning. My guess is that the red color is outside both your monitor and sRGB. This will give rise to very large color shifts easily especially in highly saturated colors. The only thing you can do about it is to bring them back into gamut. There are many tutorials on the web on how to do this. One example is here: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/whats-new-in-lightroom-4/soft-proofing-images
Or this excellent one from Andrew Rodney: http://digitaldog.net/files/LR4_softproof2.mov

  • Tips for solving red reddish color problem in Flex2-14

My flex2-14 screen color was very reddish, so I was trying to calibrate the color using the calibration tool in control panel. However, it is not satisfied.
I have solved the problem using Intel HD display tool in Control panel.
Open the Inten HD display tool, then increase blue contrast as 52, increase blue gamma as 51, increase color saturation as 8..
    Then, it would be better..

    I am not sure this..
Instead of if pls give while and check:
    try{
    while(rsValue.next()) {
    g.setFont(fntHeading);
    g.setColor(Color.red);
    g.drawString("Main Report",200,100);

  • X220 - New IPS Screen LOTS of dead pixels

    Hi,
First post here but looking for info on a really bizarre problem.
tl;dr - Installed 2 separate IPS screens and both had identical dead pixels in an unusual pattern.
My X220 is out of warranty for starters, but I ordered a replacement IPS panel off a reputable source on eBay to replace my existing TN panel as an upgrade.
Upon receiving it, I had a weird shape of dead pixels in the bottom left corner of my screen which was in the shape of the number 3 - very unusual looking.
I then RMA'd the screen and received a new one .... however I have the same problem.
A weird shape down the bottom left of the screen which is full of dead pixels - about 20 black pixels in total.
I tried using 'unstick' kind of applications to get the pixels working again but had no joy.
Once I fit my TN panel back on, the issue disappears straight away.
Between each IPS screen, I actually replaced my i5 motherboard with an i7 motherboard, so it can't be the onboard graphics that's causing the issue.
2 separate mobos, 2 separate screens ... same problem.
Common factors are inverter and also the cable for the screen... but if it's working fine on my TN panel, I can't see that as the problem.
Here is a picture of it - hopefully someone can shed some light on this before I try RMA this one as well.
    http://i57.tinypic.com/156zm39.jpg
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Welcome to the forum!
Dead pixels cannot be fixed by swapping the LED card or cable, it's a defect on the panel itself.
I can only speculate about a bad batch of panels, getting two with the same mistake is not something happening every day I guess.
I'd send it back and ask for a new panel.

  • Red/Deep Orange Screen?

Hi.. have no idea, new to imac.
Kid changed the settings and now the screen is too red. have tried to reset but failed.
Can anyone tell me how to reset or maybe what the manual resets are?
Went to Factory Settings and held down option button and clicked but still red.
Kid went into screen settings and changed everything.
I don't know what the settings should be. Have tried everthing for hours, colour calibration etc. no success..

I don't know what model is?..

Let's just take a minute to confirm that it's a software issue (I'm sure it is) .Insert the original orange coloured* restore CD that came with your iMac. Go to Apple Menu > Control Panel > Start-up Disk > select the CD and choose restart.
When the iMac boots in normal colours we know it's software! Go back to Start Up Disk Control Panel and restart using the Hard Disk.
Go to Apple Menu > Control Panel > ColorSync. Try changing the profiles there.
You should also try changing the Color [sic] options in the Monitors Control Panel.

    * My disk was orange in late 1999 on my iMac 400, but by late 2001 Apple started using a grey colour for Original install/restore disks which it has stuck to since.

  • Photoshop Elements 8 - is anyone having a problem with the screen color ?

I just installed Elements 8 & the screen color has 2 choices:
DARK (Black screen with Black & Grey text)
LIGHT (Dark Grey screen with Black text)
BOTH of these are VERY difficult to read & some text just dissapears into the background.
After speaking with the tech at Adobe, these are the only 2 choices (Dark & Light) I have.
Neither choice is worth the eye strain.
Is anyone else having the same problem ?
Has anyone found a solution ?

Thanks again. I use 125% on a 23" widescreen Acer monitor. The menus display on both the PSE7 and 9 Editor but not on the 7 or 9 Organizer. For both Organizers, I get a blank space where the menu should be - and at the right of that space, the tiny, double-arrow drop-down is nearly invisible. On 7, I slid the Edit/Preferences/General/Appearance/Brightness control to the far right in order to see the drop-down arrows. But even so, clicking the drop-down then scrolling down to select the desired menu is a nuisance. On Organizer 9, I have not been able to find any Brightness or other window-color adjustment in Preferences or in any menu option, so the drop-down arrow is extremely difficult to see. Even if the menus were visible, as with the Editors, the dark grays and blacks of the windows strain my eyes. PSE has some great features, and 9 is beter that 7, but I don't want to use a photo editing app that is visually difficult to navigate. Please let me know if there is a fix for the menu display or the window brightness/color.
