X220 laptop boots, shuts down by itself

I recently bought an x220 laptop that I was told had a hard drive crash. Now that I'm trying to get it running with a new drive, I'm discovering far greater problems that may mean a bad motherboard, and I'd like to get opinions on them.
I had problems fitting the 7mm SSD drive into the bay, and when it was in the machine would not boot. Taking the rubber guides off the drive to make its assembly thinner solved that. I then was up in Win XP, doing fine, when after a while the machine just died, as if shot.
Even before that I was getting strange behavior. The machine would boot when the power cord was attached (a BIOS setting fixed that), but also if it was simply moved, such as being set on its edged or turned upside-down.
It seemed to be getting worse. I discovered that it behaved just a bit better with the SSD drive out, so I took it out and used the opportunity to flash the BIOS to the latest version, 1.34.
But the machine still has a mind of its own. It either boots by itself out of nowhere, even when unattended (LAN boot is turned off, btw), or it boots up and then suddenly dies, or it doesn't complete the boot process at all.
I don't believe heat has anything to do with the shutdowns, and certainly not with the self-starting.
I've never seen a machine do this, and am at a loss. A bad BIOS chip doesn't seem to cover all that's going on here. Maybe it's a bad power connection somewhere?
I'd like to get this working. I got it dirt cheap, so that's no problem. But it's a nice machine that I'd hate to give up on.
Thanks for any insight.

If you have a bad hhd and have removed the ssd, how are you booting?
Pop off the keyboard and palmrest and see if something is visibly loose. Put it back together, go into BIOS and reset to factory specs.
Install a version of Win7 to the ssd. If you don't have access to Win7, then go to Microsoft and download a demo version of Win8. Install that on the ssd. Are your problems fixed?

  • Satellite A100 - Shut down by itself and will not boot anymore

Satellite A100 PSAA9A-10U038. Laptop shut down by itself whilst in use. No BIOS upgrades or changes. No lights of any kind showing, no POST.
I have tried the AC power adapter on another machine and works fine. Called Toshiba told me power adapter probably at fault, if I wish to have them look will cost $120.
I'm thinking maybe motherboard died? Any help would be appreciated.
    Tony

    hi Laptop Larry,
try to boot without the batterypack....
can you see the "toshiba screen" while booting?
    you can also try to:
    - remove hdd
    - remove added memory (with no mem the unit should "beep")
    - remove odd (cd-drive)
if you cant get the system to boot (able to enter bios, see toshiba logo on screen, no beep)
than it's possible that your mobo died...

  • My Satellite laptop (A305) shuts down when run on the AC charger/adapter

The problem is that my Toshiba _A300 series laptop (A305) shuts down when you try to run it on the AC charger/adapter_. You can boot it with the power cord plugged in and it will get to Windows Desktop and maybe a few minutes more at most before shutting off.
It will boot and _run from battery without problem_, but if you plug in the AC while it is up and running on battery the machine will normally click off instantly and reboot to the message "Windows was not shut down correctly."
The _AC adapter works fine_ reading a steady 19.19 to 19.20 volts with a voltmeter. It also _charges the battery fine when the computer is off_. I have two Toshiba brand batteries and they both work fine.
One interesting thing is that the _computer runs fine on AC when in safe mode_.
I _did a reformat/factory restore_ of Vista to assure it was not software and drivers, and still got the same problem before any external devices had been plugged in.
It has the latest BIOS and I tried resetting it to default values in case anything had gotten changed. It made no difference.
This is _not a heating issue_ because _while it is run on battery I can watch long videos_ without it shutting off. I ran compressed air through the vents just to make sure, but it makes no difference in behavior. Usually with an overheating shut-off, the computer cannot be started until it has cooled some, but these shutdowns are accompanied by an instant reboot.
I have seen on some threads that this type of problem one can work around by disabling one of the processors in Device Manager, but I don't think that is much of a lasting solution or good for the computer.
Has anyone seen this problem before and have you come with a full diagnosis of the problem and a real solution?

I have Satellite A300 and until now everything works OK.
I would like to know what happen when you remove the battery and use notebook with power supply only. Does notebook shuts down again.
If not let OS run and put the battery.
Is the battery recognized properly? Does notebook switch off again?
To be honest I cannot imagine this issue has something with software or background processes. Recovery image you got with your notebook is designed for this certain notebook mode. Recovery image is tested and I dont think preinstalled OS has anything to do with this.
    Full diagnosis?
And how to do this? You know very well that diagnosis can be done with diagnostic tools only and such tools have services only. I hope you will find answers but Im 99% sure there is nothing you can do about that. Maybe you should contact service, explain the situation and ask for help.

  • Why does my MBP 13" 2012 screen shuts down by itself?

The screen of my MBP 13" shuts down by itself, more and more often. It does not happen in a specific situation, and the laptop continues running and receiving inputs. In order to reactivate the screen I have to open and close it several times, or press the power button.
The screen turns completely back and the led outside start blinking like when I close the laptop.
The MBP is new, bought in summer 2012 and does not have any other program installed than the standard ones. I have no idea why this happens but it is occurring more and more.
    Do you have any idea?

  • Windows installation interrupted as Equium A300D shuts down by itself

    Dear all,
I have had my Toshiba Equium A300D for 2 years now. During this time, it works normally, occasionally shuts down by itself maye because it was too hot.
Recently, it tried to install updates from Windows but never successful. I left the computer to update for the whole night and it was still 2 out of 12 updates ... all the time so I always had to shut the computer down by pressing the power key.
I was unable to change the setting to update Windows automatically because everytime I tried to do that it froze. Most other commands became nonresponsive even viewing pictures.
It was until my computer was unable to connect to a certain wireless network while other devices can that I decided to reinstall Windows completely. It was installing normally but it got too hot and the computer shuts itself again!!!
I tried to install again and it shut itself down again, but I got into the final stage of set up so when I turned it on again, it was still "finihing the installation may take several mins. lease do not interrupt or shut down the computer". I left it on for several hours but it didnt move to any different stage. Before the computer shuts itself down I think I got to the stage after this.
I tried to press F8 to begin a new installation but it only got into this screen.
    What can I do?
Please help me! Thank you a lot in advance!
I am in Germany at the moment but I live and bought this computer from the UK.
    ttd500

I accidentally threw away my Toshiba box without checking what was inside when I moved out last year and I wasnt sure if there was any disk so I dont have the Toshiba Recovery disk.
I was installing using Toshiba Recovery inside the laptop, not with an external Windows disk.
Can I download it somewhere on the Toshiba website?

  • My mac keeps shutting down by itself

My mac keeps shutting down by itself. Seems to be when I'm trying to edit video on FCPX or when kids are playing a game. Its an older 2009 20" imac 2.66 Ghz Intel core Core 2 Duo running OS X 10.9.4
How can I stop this please? Thanks

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

I connected my iphone 4s that I unlocked for t-mobile. I plugged it into itunes, and it asked me to update to ios6. I accepted the download and update button. It told me it needed 8 hours. (I synced my iphone to my computer if that helps at all).

Yes, and, I try to restore. I have the T-Mobile sim card in it just to clarify. It will not let me get passed that, it does not accept the t-mobile sim card. i tried restoring it using wifi, cellular, and i cant get i tunes. I am scared that if i take the tmobile sim card out and put the at&t one in just to complete the restoration process that the iphone will lock again and not read the tmobile sim card, then all my hard work has gone for nothing. ( this whole process was caused by me trying wanting to empty my pictures onto my computer because i did not have any storage space left). <--- that may not be as important, but i included it just because.

  • My iTunes wont close and is preventing my laptop from shutting down

I plugged out my iPod touch when iTunes was asking me whether I wanted an update or not, and now iTunes wont close and has frozen, preventing my laptop from shutting down. I have intel Celeron inside and Windows 7.

Mail is open but it is frozen, being this the reason why you cannot open the Mail window. Press Alt, Command and Esc keys or go to  > Force Quit, select Mail and force quit it. Finally, you will be able to turn off or restart the MacBook

  • After 2 weeks my Iphone 4s shuts down by itself and I cannot  turn it on. What can I do. Itunes is telling me to restore the phone but the phone is saying the software isn't available

My Iphone 4s  shut down by itself after a phone call and I cannot turn it on. I took it to istore and they said it was unrespinsive and there is nothing they can do? Anyone has a clue what can be done? When I connect the phone to itunes it indicates that the phone should be restored, however when i try to restore it, it says the "software for this iphone is not currently available" Is there anything I can do other than put this brand new iphone in the grabage?

On computer, at the top of this page is a Tab for iTunes, click it, make sure iTunes is up to date. Also make sure computer Fire Wall and Anti Virus do not interfere with iTunes, turn them OFF to be certain.

  • SAPCCM4X agents are shutting down by itself

    Hello Gurus
A few SAPCCM4X agents are shutting down by itself and this is happening
for systems which have a version 4.6c and 4.5B in our landscape like PCX.. Analyzing the log of one of this agents the
    message below is informed:
    Mon May 9 04:41:10 2011
CCMCTRL: ERROR: csm_show_file: no permission to
    read /usr/sap/PCX/SYS/profile/PCX_G34_zonepcx
CCMCTRL: ERROR: csm_show_file: Please check sapccmsr.ini
I tried to find the profile mentioned in the warning but with no
succes. The cause of the shutdown of the agent is that because the
correct profile is PCX_DVEBMGS34_zonepcx instead of PCX_G34_zonepcx but
why it is looking for the wrong one when everything is configured with
    the profile PCX_DVEBMGS34_zonepcx . I also checked sapccmsr.ini but
    found nothing.
I  can start the agent normally choosing the correct parameter
(PCX_DVEBMGS34_zonepcx) but sometimes the agent shutdown by itself
after 3-4 days with the error message above.
Why the agent search for the wrong profile and where can I change it to
    the right profile ?
Or is there any other way to resolve it.
    Thanks and Regards
    Ashwini

Thank you Mani, I will make this test in only one appl server and monitor.
I will let you know the resul of my tests.

  • Why my 2009 desktop with OS Maverick keep shutting down by itself

Why my 2009 desktop using OS Maverick keep shutting down by itself?

When it shuts down, the screen blanks (more like turns grey, like the color of the background when on the log in screen). It reboots immediately, so at first the problem was presumed to be restarting, not shutting down and powering back on. The computer is usually very warm, and definitely gets hot easily. A test was run determine when the fan would turn on to start cooling the computer by running digits of Pi, and the tester concluded it was too close within the safe temperatures before it would permanently affect the computer. (I believe this was within 5ºF, but I am not 100% sure.) The times when it will turn off and reboot do not seem coorelated with much if anything. It has done this at multiple times, among running varying amounts of programs and for different lengths of time: right after logging into the user, within a minute of after it has turned off and rebooted, within 5 minutes, 10, 30, even 60 minutes of turning off and rebooting, when only running one program such as Firefox, when running various programs such as Firefox, iTunes, Microsoft Word, Sticky Notes....
    Basically, it makes no sense.
