X220 mSSD + SSD Options and Opinions

I'd like to upgrade my 320 GB stock 5.4k HDD to all flash. I've come up with the plan to buy (2) 256 GB SDDs; one mSATA, one SATA:
SSD: Samsung 850 Pro ~$120 (SATA3 slot from what I'm aware)
mSSD: Samsung 840 EVO ~$125 (SATA3 in a SATA2 slot)
A few questions:
1. Is this overkill?
2. In the above setup, do you recommend I install the OS and programs on the highest performer, the 850 Pro, and use the mSSD for storage?
3. I've looked through many old threads about the x220 which cover mSSDs which worked with the x220 slot at the time. Will every modern mSSD likely work with the x220 or are there still issues?
4. Another scenario I've considered is:
SSD: Crucial mx100, 512 GB $190
mSSD: Intel 310 80 GB $45 (from ebay, the go-to for x220 in 2012 threads)
Reduced performance, more 'dedicated' storage, larger SSD which will likely be used later.
I appreciate any insight you have to offer!

I see - I hadn't seen much info on mSSDs used in x220s from recent threads. A lot are from 2011 and 12 and mention a handful of mSSDs that worked with the x220. It seems as if it's not such a problem anymore.
I plan to use the SSD for OS and apps and mSSD for storage. If I want more storage down the road, I plan to buy an SD card. They've become cheap already ($20 for decent quality 64GB), and I doubt I'll need much more anytime soon.
Even if mSSD slots are phased out, I could move the SSD to a new machine and boot the x220 from the mSSD with/without the original HDD.
Thanks for the info!

  • Looking For 2009 Xserve SSD Option Parts

I just purchased a "new" fully loaded 2009 Xserve that has everything except the SSD option and I need it. Anybody here have a source for the 3 parts besides eBay and Amazon? The part numbers are...
    661-5067 (SSD)
    992-8958 (SSD Cable)
    992-8959 (SSD Bracket)
    Thanks,
    Chuck

    Chris,
Have you used Impact before? I have attempted to order these parts from 2 vendors now who have advertised them as "in stock" only to have them subsequently cancel my order after putting holds on my bank account funds because they didn't really have the parts to begin with. Apparently it's accepted behavior to advertise the entirety of Apple's part catalog and hope somebody will order something, whether you have the things you have advertised or not. The picture Impact has posted of the drive isn't even close to the specs of the real drive, so I'm suspicious.
After the 2 disappointments, I went ahead and bought the cable from an eBay vendor and I bought the exact same Samsung drive but without the Apple logo, also from an eBay vendor. I got the drive today and the cable should arrive tomorrow. If it all works, I'll go after the bracket next week.
    I'll post the results.
    Thanks,
    Chuck

  • RAID options, SSD disks and others....

    Hi!
This is not exactly topic for expanding my mac pro... This is more "How to expand my upcoming mac pro".
There are couple of things I'm constantly fighting. Memory and disk-speed. I absolutely hate it when I see spinning beach ball on the screen and only thing I hear is the wild hard-drive trashing ...
Now when I finally upgrade my power mac G5 to Mac Pro I'm confronted with myriad of choices:
Memory is easy - 12Gb BTO option 6x 2Gb sticks. This should satisfy all the requirements. Enough to work with. Enough sticks so it really is DDR and so on.
Hard-drives are the real pain. First of all I'd like to ask couple of questions...
    a) Does OS X and disk-utily support making striped RAID-disks and use those as boot-disk? Idea was to install two fast SSD disks and stripe those. They have sufficient long MTBF so I feel confident using them striped for increased performance. Performance is blazing fast for boot-disk which directly translates into nice user-experience since boot-up is fast and opening programs is almost instant.
    b) Performance characteristics on OS X disk-utily versus SoftRAID. Are there any noticeable differences? Disk-utility driver is single-threaded while SoftRAID is multi-threaded. How about creating boot-disks with SoftRAID?
    c) How about using SSD drives and hardware RAID-card from apple? Any experiences with this?
At the moment I think the setup would be something like this:
    4x 1Tb disk-drives with RAID-5 for mass-storage
2x SSD drives with RAID-0 for OS
Downside is that I think this would require both hardware RAID-card for RAID-5 and possibly software-RAID if hardware RAID-card doesn't recognize SSD drives. Or if I wan't to be able to boot into windows which I'm forced to do sometimes (Note! booting windows in Mac is against my beliefs!) then I'd need to leave small partition free on the SSD drive(s) and not include that in RAID-setup.
So satisfying the following is pretty hard:
    - RAID-5 for 4 internal hard-drives used for mass-storage
    - RAID-0 for 2 SSD-drives used for OS and applications
    - Ability to dual-boot into Windows via bootcamp

a: If you make a striped RAID array (RAID0) with Disk Utility you can boot from it. I'm doing the same right now, with 2 OCZ Vertex SSD's.
c: Officially, the RAID card only supports drives Apple sells. Besides that, it would be a shame to use SSD's with the Apple RAID card, as it is slow. If you have 3 SSD's in a RAID0 setup they will be faster than the RAID card can handle (the RAID card's maximum speed is somewhere near 533MB/s, look up the exact number in the Apple Online Store).
I don't think you can use Bootcamp when using the RAID card. In any case, you can't start Windows using Bootcamp from a disk that is connected to the RAID card.
Also, you don't have enough connectors for 4 internal hard drives and 2 SSD's if you want to keep your optical drive.
You could go for a third party RAID controller, but then I'd wait with my purchase until more is known about the compatibility of those cards with Snow Leopard. Also, this probably won't work with Bootcamp.

  • X220 resume from sleep and boot issues

This is driving me crazy! I have an X220 with Windows 8 and UEFI boot installed.
It all started when I first installed Windows 8 a few months ago which required me to update my BIOS to the latest version. The installation process often got stuck when booting from the Installation CD (the round circle stopped spinning, the display was at full brightness). Eventually I managed to boot into the Installer (when the boot logo doesn't get stuck, the display is then dimmed to minimum).
I was quite happy to have a superfast lightweight OS which booted in an instant.. When suddenly it started to get stuck when booting (same issue with the boot logo not spinning anymore). This happens quite randomly, but I often manage to boot (maybe 2-3 times a week, I don't boot often though..). Now, the booting hangs are less of an issue for me but more often that that it fails to resume from sleep. The LEDs flash and then it instantly drops to sleep mode again (well at least the sleep/moon LED is active). This happens quite often as I sleep/resume up to 5-10 times a day (changing lecture rooms, meeting rooms, save battery when the lectures are boring, ...)
Now after researching and spending hours in debugging this issue, it seems that I'm not the only one having this (or a similar) issue, but often without any definitive solution being specified.
This is what I have already tried:
    * Upgrade BIOS and SSD firmware to latest
    * Install/update latest drivers
    * Mess around with BIOS options
    ** UEFI/Legacy First options
    ** Intel Virtualization/vt-d
    ** Others..
I know based on other threads that I'm not the only one experiencing exactly these issues. Has anyone managed to fix this?
    Thank's in advance
    Fabio Scala

I had a similar issue, as soon as a described even a little bit of it to warrenty support they sent someone to swap the board
It seems thats the only fix, its been fine since

  • Ssd cache and hybrid drive

I am looking to order the HP 17t-j000 with 8GB of memory.  It offers both SSD cache and a Hybrid drive as options, and you can choose both.    Does it make sense to get both, or is this just redundant?   I

No the SSD cache drive with hybrid drive will outperform just the hybrid drive by quite a bit. You will get boot time performance close to a main SSD drive, but a main SSD drive would be even faster, particularly on data transfer.

  • OSX 10.7, SSDs, TRIM, and so on...

Okay, so I have played with Windows 7 Home Premium on this wonderful little Booklet 3g for some time now. I hate it.
I am a Mac guy, through and through, and this will never change.
I have been running both Linux Mint 11 and Ubuntu 11.04 for the past two weeks and love them on the Booklet 3g, but the same ugly moster rears its head at every turn - the GMA 500 chip. What a lame and disappointing choice!
I found a Poulsbo driver for Ubuntu that *sort of* works (anecdoatal information - I have yet to try it) and a terminal apt-get command to (I think) install the same exact file in Mint 11. It works, but the cursor flickers non-stop and a lot of the tasty features of the GMA 500 are still locked out. At least the resolution is correct and looks great. Nice!
So, the main problems with putting on my retail Mac OSX disc (purchased just for such a project) was that the GMA 500 is not supported at all and there is NO SOUND - in OR out! This is a deal breaker for me as I am a musician and use Finale as my killer app. I MUST have working sound.
So no OSx86 foolishness (ahem - testing) for this Booklet right now.
However, Lion is WAY faster than anything ever in the line of OSX versions, AND it now has TRIM support for all Macs. (Recent versions of Snow Leopard have had it for MacBook pros that have the SSD option.)
With Lion being so cool (multitouch wonders and TRIM) and so fast, the idea of upgrading my Nokia with a decent SSD is now very attractive. And I may reinstall Win7HP, but will probably just stay with Linux Mint 11. If the OSx86 community manages to figure out Lion for this computer I might go that route as well as I would love to make this more comfortable and familiar to me if I am to use it a lot on the road as a Finale box.
Questions (after all that - sorry!):
If I am to use something OTHER THAN WINDOWS as my OS (the most likely scenario for thus netbook) which SSD would be the best choice for me? Does this even matter? I do not know if Mint has TRIM support, but Lion does for certain. Will that affect my choices?
With the plethora of Linux distros out today, which one seems to work best with this hardware setup? Joli OS (formerly JoliCloud) supports GMA 500 BEAUTIFULLY but is not a full OS. In my experience you have to have a connection even to get to the desktop. It is not cloud-based as they claim, but cloud-centric. If you are offline it is useless, or so my experiences have been. I HOPE this is incorrect as I really like the Joli OS quite a lot. Mint is do-able with tweaks for the GMA 500. Eveything else *just works* as it should. I like it. Any reason to change?
TRIM support is really needed isn't it? I do not fully understand it, but am stoked that the Mac OS now comes with it. Now I can try SSDs in my new iMac 27" i5 (it has the capability but is probably not fun to install. I will have to see about this.
Thanks for reading this rambling post. I have a lot of great ideas for this netbook, but because of the GMA 500 chip it seems like a lot of interest has waned. Shame about the RAM, too. What an idiotic idea. Oh, and the PATA/SATA bridge. Oh, dear. Maybe I need to sell this thing after all... ;-)

In practicality you can't. You can set the preference in the Privacy pane of the Safari preferences to ask websites not to track you, but I don't believe Google honors that setting, and they most certainly store all sorts of cookies which you probably will get even if you set Safari to block all cookies since web programmers have ways around those blocks. All you can do is delete the cookies and other junk on a regular basis. Many cookies hide, so I use Cookie from SweetP productions which does a good job of deleting most if not all of the cruft web sites leave.

Washington Post articles and opinions that are clicked on in my email, no longer display the text of the article or opinion. This is a recent development and may be caused by a Firefox upgrade as I did not previously have this problem. The problem does not exist for Internet Explorer. The webpage displays the top part of the page and the links and advertisements on the right side of the page but shows only "white space" where the article or opinion text would regularly be displayed. No error or problem message is displayed. A page refresh does not correct the problem. When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
(You also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now")
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first) using either of these. While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
Some sites now try to detect ad blockers and may be sensitive to other add-ons... A standard diagnostic to bypass potential interference by extensions (and some custom settings) is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [[Backing up your information]]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Safe Mode ([[Safe Mode]]) using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode."
If the site works correctly, this points to one of your extensions or custom settings as the problem.
    Any change?

  • New SSD (2014) and Macbook pro 4.1 compatability

    Hi All-
Given current prices, I would like to upgrade my hard drive on my early 2008, Macbook Pro (4.1, pre-unibody) and also upgrade my OS (Snow Leopard to Yosemite).
The hard drive in this Macbook pro has a Sata I connection and I am wondering what my best SSD options are in 2014.
I am most concerned about issues of potential backward compatibility of Sata III with SataI.
I understand Sata III should be be backward compatible with Sata I, but I've seen that some people have had issues with this.
So I am wondering if anyone has actually made this upgrade with any of the newer SSD drives that are available (Samsung 840 Evo, SanDisk Extreme Pro, Crucial m550) and how it has worked out?
I understand OWC sells compatible drives, but given the great prices on these newer drives, I am leaning towards a more current drive with all it's modern goodness (longevity+controller) with the understanding that my Sata I connection will be a bottleneck.
I am also curious about whether I should just look for older Sata II SSDs? For this I would need recommendations.
Thank you very much in advance. And if there is anything I've failed to consider, feel free to let me know.

  • SSD Options for 2710p

Are there any 64+GB SSD options for a 2710p? HP used to have a model that came with an SSD, can the drive be purchased separately? I found a couple 1.8" ZIF drives, but nothing exceeds 32GB without costing almost a grand.

Thank you for the very helpful and excellent post in this. I looking at the Runcore 64 SSD Pro IV RCP-IV-Z1864-C for my 2710p,
    it shows to be compatible.
However mine does not have a HD so I have to do a fresh install, use a USD external DVD drive to load windows with, it should boot to this external drive.
I missed or just not sharp enough to get it where you 'lift the bar'  to remove or incert the ribbon connector to the new drive ? I guess I should wait until it arrives first. Can you clear me up please on how to make sure the connector is correctly incerted into the new drive please ?
Also I am missuing the hard drive braclet and two screws, any idea where I can find these. I am searching the net but no luck so far ?
    Thanks again,
    bruce.

  • Ordering an E540: SSD option

    Hello all,
I am interested in getting an E540.
The ordering/configuration page specifies SSD or HD but not both.
My plan is to use the M.2 connector to install a primary SSD (AFAIK only 128GB as it's a 42mm slot)
and use the HD bay for another HD/SSD.
My question is: is the SSD option shipping with an M.2 SSD, leaving the HD bay free ... or a 128GB SSD in the HD bay, leaving the M.2 slot free ?
On a side issue: My intent is to use the M.2 SSD for the OS install (Linux) not as cache.
Any thoughts and recomendatioins welcomed :-)
    Thank you.
    Cheers.

    Hello and welcome,
I'm only going by what I read, but it looks like in the as-shipped configuration the M.2 option is only used for cache and the data/OS drive is 2.5" whether it is an HDD or SSD.
    Snips from the tabook:
[edit] Looking around the web at retailers of the 20c6008uus - as an example.  They tend to list the 128GB SSD this way:
    Solid State Drive Capacity
    128 GB
    Solid State Drive Interface
    M.2
That's a little confusing.  If they're referring to the OS SSD in both cases, then it's M.2.  My suspicion is that they're conflating the two drive locations.
I guess we could use a more definitive answer.

  • Can you please take a look at my TM Buddy log and opine on what the problem is?

    Pondini,
Can you please take a look at my TM Buddy log and opine on what the problem is?  I'm stuck in the "Preparing Backup" phase for what must be hours now.  My last successful backup was this morning at 7:16 am.  I did do a series of Software Update this morning, one of which, a security update I believe, required a restart.
I'm confused as to what the issue is, and how to get everything back to "it just works".
    Many thanks in advance.

Time Machine can't read some data it needs from your backups (each of those date-stamps is one of your backups).
That's usually a problem with the drive itself, but could be the directory on it. First be sure all plugs are snug and secure, then see if you can repair it, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, post back with the results.  Also either tell us what kind of Mac you have, what version of OSX you're running, or post that to your Profile, so it's accessible.
This is unrelated to the original post here, so I'm going to ask the Hosts to split it off into a new thread.  Since you've posted in the Lion forum, I'll assume that's what you're running.  You should get a notice from them

hello, there's a general regression in firefox 27 that won't allow files to download directly into a root drive. please try to create a subfolder (like ''E:\Downloads'') and set this as default location for downloads...

  • Cisco Jabber windows call option and user addition issue

    Hi,
After uploading the jabber-config.xml (EDI-BDI) on the CUCM, the call option for new user contacts started appearing but the already existing contacts in Jabber client have still no call option. Also when we add new contacts to the Jabber client, it just disappears as such. Any one faced similar issue before. Below are the details and attached jabber-config.xml and LDAP profile snap.
We are using employeeNumber as attribute in LDAP configuration.
    CUCM - 8.5.1.15900-4
    UCCX - 8.6.3.10000-20
Jabber for windows - 9.7.0 (Tried with earlier version of jabber as well)

    Hey
Just right click on the contacts which do not have the call option and select view profile, then see if those contacts that are added are they from the Outlook or the AD, if its AD then they will have a contact number and as such they will have the Call Option enabled.
If they are from outlook then delete the users and readd them by checking the view profile option to verify they are being pulled from AD.
Also if i assumed the issue differently then what it is please explain the whole scenario.
Note-: In case of J4W it will not connect to the directory using the LDAP profile info, it automatically verified and cnnects to the domain using your login creds.
