X220 screen size from a programmer's perspective

Hi all,
I was just wondering, how good/ bad is the X220's 12.5" screen size from a programming perspective? Is the small size + IPS worth it?
My problem is that I want to try it out before buying it. Does anybody know a store in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) where I can go and see a X220 in real-life? Thanks!

I'm a software engineer and do a lot of programming on my X220. The screen is acceptable for programming but not ideal. The 12.5" size isn't a problem -- the issue is the low 1366 x 768 resolution. You can't display many lines of code in a height of only 768 pixels, and with an IDE such as Visual Studio it's awkward dealing with multiple windows and panels in a low resolution screen. However, the X220 works well for programming if you attach an external monitor.
If you can't find an X220, just try any laptop with 1366 x 768 resolution (there are many). It is the screen resolution, not the physical screen size that is the real issue you'll have to deal with.

  • Determining My screen size from preferences

    Hi I am trying to determine what kind of screen size I have on my macbook pro from within the "about this computer" option in preferences.
    I know it sounds dumb and could just measure with a ruler ( which I did ) but it came up as 14 inches and there is no macbook pro that's 14 inches it's either 15 or 13 inches
    How can I determine my screensize from a preference option ?
    thank you
    Here's the macbook I have
    Macbook pro laptop 2.4 HGz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac Os 10.5.8
    Thanks

    The ruler works, but you have do measure the diagonal, not the edge. If you do the diagonal from the inside corners of the bezel (frame), you get pretty close to the correct size.
    My 15.4" MacBook Pro measures 14" to the outside edges of the display so, if that's how you're measuring, you also have the 15" version.

  • Increase screen size from 800x600 to 1024x768

    Our Director program uses 800x600 resolution screen on all our files. The program was designed for 800x600. All Dir files are that size. These days a lot of laptops are using much larger screens.  Is it possible to create a projector or some function that allows the entire programs to be enlarged (maximized) or magnified to for example, 1024x768 ?
    When the user chooses the enlarge the screen size  or magnify the size that function should be clicked  and all DIR files in the program should appear in 1024x768 size. If the user wishes to go back to the original size (800x600) they click the button  to use the program in the original size?
    Can this be done?  Does it need to be done using a projector ? or can we embed this function in one of the opening Dxr files (the DXR file that the EXE throws you after they open the projector (exe)
    Thanks

  • Is it possible to MANUALLY change Display Resolution (screen size) HELP!!

    Forgive me if this has been covered already, but I have tried to look here and
    there for an answer
    My screen for my iMac-G4 blew out long ago, I had a another screen (a Dell CRT-
    flatscreen) hooked up and IT blew out a few days ago, I just bought an LCD
    flat screen, but it needs a 1680 x 1050 resolution (WIDE screen(?)and my
    iMac-G4 only goes to 1024 x 768 in the "Display" controls. So all my desktop
    images are "scrunched" or "stretched".
    So is there a "MANUAL" way of configuring the screen size to a "standard"
    size within this Mac? or do I need to find a standard size screen?
    . . . HELP!!!

    Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Apple limited the graphics cards in iMac G4s to the native resolution of the built-in LCD i.e:
    15" iMac G4 - 1024 x 768
    17" iMac G4 - 1440 x 900
    20" iMac G4 - 1680 x 1050.
    Even when connecting a second display this could only mirror the internal at the same resolution. For the following iMac G4's it's possible to install a firmware hack to open up the full capabilities of the graphics cards:
    17" 800MHz
    17" 1GHz
    15" 1GHz
    17" 1.25GHz
    20" 1.25GHz
    using an application called Screen Spanning Doctor. This is risky but I guess you haven't got much to lose at this point. I've only ever heard of one Mac user actually failing to do the process right though.
    You can always use Firewire Target Disk Mode to recover you client's files to another Mac.
    I'd be interested if SwitchResX works too. I only have external displays much smaller than my iMacs so can't test it from that perspective.
    cheers

  • Satellite A300 PSAG0A - Games Will Not Display in Full Screen Size

    I have a large number of games installed on my computer. At least 90% of them will not display in full screen size but display in a small window with a large amount of black screen surrounding the window. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. However, I do not think it has anything to do with Windows as my husband runs the same games on his Toshiba Satellite L300, running exactly the same version of windows, and they all display in full screen size.
    Altering the screen resolution makes no difference. And, of course, I do select the full screen option in the games.
    Also, sometimes when I have been playing a game and then closed it I find that my desktop picture has shrunk to the smaller size - the same size as the window in which the game was displayed when I was playing it.
    The games work fine in every other way, it is only this small screen size which is driving me nuts.
    I hope that someone can help me with this!!

    Yes, as far as I can tell I have the latest driver. But, even this is confusing to me because....
    My graphics media accelerator is Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family. The installed driver version is 7.14.10.1329. The release date for this is 2007-09-13, as far as I can tell from web searches.
    However, on the Toshiba website for driver downloads, the available driver version is 8.2.0.1012 PV. The date is 2006-12-28. I have downloaded this driver and attempted to install it. I get the message that it has been installed but, after rebooting and checking the installed driver version is still 7.14.10.1329.
    Perhaps, the 8.2.0.1012 PV version does not actually install because it is older than the currently installed version. I would have thought that the driver version with the higher number would be the newer one, but perhaps this is not the case as the dates do not seem to support this theory.
    So now I ask myself, firstly, if the driver available for download on the Toshiba website is not the newest one, then why is it there?
    Secondly, if it is the newest one then why will it not install on my computer?

  • IBook 14" to MacBook 13" screen size

    I am moving from a 14" iBook to the 13" widescreen MacBook. How do the two compare? Does the widescreen make up for the smaller overall screen size. I don't want to downgrade on size, as the 14" iBook is barely large enough.
    The computer is used for basic Word, Excel, Internet, email, but lots of screens open at the same time.
    Will it be OK???
    FB

    I made th exact same upgrade and initially shared your concerns, however I can say confidently that they were wholely un-founded. The higher resolution screen of the macbook provides more screen space in a smaller area than did the ibook. The biggest difference for me was the brightness though, soo much brighter than the ibook; I hardly ever turn it up past half way!
    The other posters are correct about expose though, I find i an invaluable tool. I also make use of virtuedesktops:
    http://virtuedesktops.info/
    It works perfectly to give you more useable screen area.

  • The green button, top left corner of a pop-up screen on MACbook, it's supposed to enlarge the pop-up to full MAC screen size, correct?  Mine does not.  Sometimes it makes the pop-up screen SMALLER.  Appreciate someone solving this for me.

    Are you talking about the green '+' button in the top left corner? That technically doesn't enlarge it. It switches the window from the default window size to the custom size you made. You can enlarge the window by moving your mouse to the bottom right corner of the window, and dragging until you get the size you want.

  • How do I set the screen size of my site?

    Hey guys making a site for a friend and I'm not sure on how I go about setting a screen size that can be viewed on varying screen sizes like 1280x800 and up. At the moment on my 1920x1080 display it looks fine but when I open it on her MacBook Pro (1280x800) it is cut of by half and my website has some fixed anchors which I do not allow scrolling so you are kind of stuck.
    Thanks to anyone that can help, can't find a tutorial anywhere

    In the normal state the screen on an iPad will rotate depending on which side is up. Any of the four sides can be up or on top and the display will look correct. But if you want to lock the display in one orientation you can. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the Control Center. Then tap on the Orientation Lock icon. That's the icon of the small padlock surrounded by a circular arrow. That icon will appear at the top right of the display and the screen will no longer rotate. Repeat the same procedure to unlock orientation.

    APDivs cannot be resized.
    APDivs in primary layouts won't work in Responsive Web Design.
    APDivs are a very poor layout method.
    For this reason, Adobe removed APDivs from Dreamweaver CC.
    Example of Fluid Grid Layout with floats & margins, no APDivs required.

  • How can I find out the screen size of the users moniter using the Acrobat SDK?

    How can I find out the screen size of the users moniter using the Acrobat SDK? I need to know how much sreen real estate that is available on the users moniter. Is there some call that I can make from the SDK to discover the maximun X and Y coordinates?
    Thanks,
    Gregory

    Currently, I am testing on multiple moniters and it is defaulting to the moniter designated as the #1 moniter. For our purposes, this is acceptable. Once the two documents have loaded, the user can move and re-size at will.

  • Unable to switch  screen mode from standard: PS CS5

    Full screen with or without menus is grayed out in the view menu and the view dropdown selector from the menu bar. I have quit and re-entered PS and have reset all workspaces to default. I have checked that I'm working in 64 bit. I still cannot switch screen mode from standard. Last update was to 12.04. Last extension installed was photokit sharpener.
    Thanks for any help. (PS, how do I reset preferences file on a mac?)

    At least for x86_64, libelf seems to be a dependency. Throws an error about libelf.so.0 when starting screen if it's not installed.
    Comment by: Ranguvar on Sun, 11 Oct 2009 04:00:10 +0000
    The three lines at the end of the install scriplet are unnecessary now and can cause problems apparently, please remove :)
    Also, I cannot confirm libelf dependency, both by using ldd and trying removing libelf, so it should be kept out.

  • Cannot adjust page width to fit to screen size on some PCs with IE

    Hello friends, I am using APEX 4.0 and IE9 on different Windows 7 PCs . The page will go way off the screen to the right on one PC, and fits nicely inside the screen on another PC. This problem does not occur in Firefox on any PC. I have used Firebug to try to isolate the template or css settings. Using Theme_4, I have a breadcrumb region and 4 reports regions. One of the reports regions is in column 1 and 3 regions are in column 2. Display point is Page Template Body (3. Items above region content) for all the reports regions. The CSS is #themes/theme_4/css/theme_4_0.css. The template is One Level Tabs (Right Sidebar/Table Based). I tried various width="" using px and % under Edit Page Template-Definition-Body (see below). I tried style="width:800px" within the <div> tags. I have tried various other changes to theme_4_0.css and apex_4_0.css with no visible change to the page width on the obstinate PCs. I reset IE setting and deleted all personal settings on both PCs with no changes to either one, one fits on the screen and the other does not. The issue is that most of our users use IE so most of them will have to live with using the horizontal scroll bar to see the regions in column 2, unless we switch them all to Firefox (not a bad option, except that option works for our users only, we have no control over external browsers). I have tried suggestions from many discussion threads, as this problem has bothered us for quite some time. I know this is an IE problem, but any help is appreciated. Thank you.
    "|" represents screen size and "-" is the regions/content for the "bad" PCs.
    |----------|----------
    The "good" PCs look like this:

    <tbody>
    <tr>
    <td class="tbl-main" width="100%">#REGION_POSITION_02##BOX_BODY#</td>
    <td class="tbl-sidebar">#REGION_POSITION_03#</td>
    </tr>
    </tbody>
    </table>
    </div>

    I think your concerns are very reasonable. But I want to sort of refocus things a little bit for you here... it's not really a PC vs Mac issue... Rather, it's specifically an Internet Explorer issue. And you might say that this is synonymous...still 98% of the world uses IE, and you would be correct. Hopefully when the final version of IE7 comes out, it will finally embrace some of the modern day OPEN web standards without trying to make too many standards of its own (this is Microsoft, though).
    Anyways, in the meantime, I guess we all try to make the best of it. It's very easy to conclude that iWeb is not a viable tool for you, as long as you have something else to "fall back" on. With my limited knowledge of all things HTML, I have no such luxury. Instead, I have put up a notice on my site for IE users only that the site might not look its best on IE....this notice also encourages IE users to use FireFox, which is very much like Safari and will in 99% of cases display your iWeb pages just like you expect. You can see how I've done this here (but you have to surf from IE)... http://blog.dirtdoog.com
    I think many people in the PC world understand the limitations of IE. Certainly many don't, but you have to consider your likely audience, I guess. I believe that your website content is king. If your content is compelling enough to your intended audience, they will jump through hoops to see it in its full glory....but you have to make them aware of the problem. That's why I have chosen to take the path that I have taken.
    Let me know what you think.
