X220: space bar issue due to broken centre bumper

Hello,
While cleaning the keyboard and lifting up the space bar the centre white bumper was broken. See photo (sorry for the poor quality):
Now the space bar will only work if pressed directly in the middle and with extra 'force'. What should I do? I could try supergluing the disconnected pieces...if this does not work is my only other option to order some kind of replacement piece?
Thanks.
K

I'd just get a replacement keyboard, they aren't that expensive. Plenty on ebay.

  • Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard: Space Bar Issues

    Depending on your typing style, you may need to change how you type for this keyboard to work properly. For example, many people type quickly and simply press keys on the edge rather than in the middle or top. For this reason, some keyboards have a larger spacebar, for example, so the wrist doesn’t need to turn in for the thumbs to reach the spacebar. Dell offers a keyboard for about $12 that has excellent ergonomic design:
    http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku= 310-8038
    The only problem with the Dell keyboard above is that eventually (after about 6 months to a year) the key travel may become a little sticky. On the Apple keyboard, the spacebar does not descend to where the thumbs are naturally positioned, so the thumbs must move up to hit the spacebar squarely in the middle. This usually results on tapping on the bottom of the spacebar. With the new Apple keyboard, tapping on the bottom area of the spacebar produces erratic results. Just now, I pressed the space bar about 20 times on the bottom of the spacebar and that generated about 5 spaces (about 25% functional). So, it will be necessary to press the spacebar squarely in the (vertical) center or toward the top. Horizontally, the spacebar seems to work just fine as long as you are pressing it in the vertical middle or top.
    The caps lock key has similar issues as those with the spacebar mentioned above. Perhaps this is because it is a longer key than the other keys. If you are accustom to pressing the caps lock key with your little finger, you may try to engage caps lock by pressing the bottom portion of the caps lock key. This will work about 70% of the time, but not 100% of the time.
    I've posted more about this and other related keyboard issues here:
    http://web.mac.com/resourcesforlife/journal/writings/Entries/2007/8/21Apple_Aluminum_WiredKeyboard.html

    Thanks for the great description of the spacebar problem. I've been trying to figure out a good way to describe it. Here's my take:
    As you point out, the front edge of the spacebar sits too far up our thumbs, so it's located too close to the thumbnails, instead of having some portion sitting under our thumb knuckles, so less of our thumb is touching the spacebar along its lower half than would be desirable for a good hit. But this is a problem mostly caused by the short travel of the Aluminum keytops--I held a previous-generation Apple white keyboard up to the Aluminum keyboard, and there's very little difference in spacing of the keytops between the two keyboards--the bottom edge of the spacebar on the Aluminum keyboard sits only a tiny bit higher on my thumbs. What little difference there is, contributes to the spacebar problem, but it's the shorter travel of the Aluminum keytops that causes of most of the trouble for the spacebar. Hitting just the bottom edge of the earlier keyboard's spacebar is compensated for, because the earlier keyswitch design allows the keytops to travel further down than the Aluminum's, and it's this longer travel that allows the older keyboard's spacebar to actuate every time. With the Aluminum, your thumbs get stopped too early by the strip of aluminum below the spacebar, which sits at almost the same height as the top of the spacebar. At least Apple got the spacebar's cantelievering right, so you can hit either end of the spacebar and still register a keypress, even though there's only a single keyswitch in the middle.
    Possibly owners could make some modification to the spacebar to reduce this problem--maybe applying some kind of adhesive layer to the top of the spacebar to make it taller, but that would probably wear down too fast. More advanced modifications would include cutting away the strip of aluminum that our thumbs hit, but I doubt too many people would want to do that. Maybe someone could manufacture a taller replacement spacebar, or one that's slightly taller just along its lower edge, so the letter keys just above the spacebar wouldn't get overhung by the spacebar, causing you to hit the top edge of the spacebar when you want to hit one of those keys.
    I tried this theory, by cutting out some strips of Post-It notes, about a quarter-inch wide, and five sheets thick, along the whole length of the lower half of the spacebar, and it worked pretty well, but felt a little odd. A properly custom-designed spacebar would probably feel more natural.
    I'm still trying to get used to the aluminum's shorter key travel, after typing on regular desktop keyboards for about 27 years. One nice thing about the shorter key travel is that it's quieter, and so it's less distracting to other people in the room--maybe Apple did this so their laptops would make less noise in a classroom or office meeting? It also makes it less likely to wake up someone sleeping in the same room. Also, the shorter key travel has been a lot less stressful on my fingertips--even halfway through the day typing on the previous keyboards, my fingers would sometimes start to hurt a little.

  • [X220] space bar key noise reduction

    Since a while the space bar key is much noisier than other keys, especially if not pressed in the center. Before to get a replacement keyboard I'dl like to clean and eventually put a little of oil on hinger under the key. Can You tell me how can I remove the space bar key with no risk to break or wiken the key itself ?  Thanks, Stefano. P.S.: I've already changed the keyboard some time ago. I'm using this one from about 5 months

    Hi TheLiar,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
    I regret to inform you that we cannot remove individual keys on the keyboard; the connecter is so delicate that it might break. Only think is that you have to check if there is any foreign particle stuck in between the keys, or you can check cleaning the keyboard with a vacuum cleaner.
    If you find that issue still persists then you have to replace the complete keyboard unit.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,

  • Mac Book Pro space bar issue...

    I just received my MBP and the space bar is very difficult to engage. This small thing makes typing an extreme test of patience.
    I got it at Future Shop Canada two days ago. Should I call Apple Support or deal with Future Shop? It has taken a while to get here and I need it bad in the coming days. (I am a photography student and it is coming into portfolio time.)

    Hi, Thanks for the reply. The space bar works, I have to press down hard on it for it to input. It seems really bad on the left side of it, to the point where it needs to be pressed firmly. I thought it was a mac thing (being a long time pc user) but my gf is a graphics designer and works on them all day, she said that it wasn't right.
    The space bar doesn't seem to be mounted improperly, it is just not very sensitive. The fact that it has very little sensitivity on the left side as apposed to the right leads me to believe that it isn't just a software problem.
    I hope that explains it. I am going to call apple in the morning. How long do these things usually take? I would hope to get it back fast after blowing $3300 on it.

  • Space Bar Issues

    For the last several months I've noticed that my space bar when pressed won't respond unless I almost bang on it. I've tried cleaning under the key, and increading keyboard sensitivity via the system preferences. Does anyone have any other ideas that would help? It drives me crazy to have to double back and put spaces between words when I've done a substantial amount of typing. PLEASE HELP!!!
    Shakira
    P.S. I'm not 100% sure my iBook has Mac OSX (10.4), it may be a little higher or lower. Unfortunately I'm not at my home computer right now to check.

    hi Shakira-
    this could be caused by a software problem. when you get to your computer again find your install disks for the current operating system (make sure it is whatever it says in the system profiler) and run a disk repair. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214. if this isn't helpful, then create a new user in system preferences > accounts by clicking the plus sign above the lock. test the keyboard in the new user to see if there is any difference. as well, try resetting the pmu on your ibook. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449. • Space bar issue

    Hi there everyone,
    I recently had a problem with my 10.7.3 13 inch mid 2010 macbook  pro, I coudn't copy and paste,
    I reinstalled the operating system and updated back to 10.7.3 and now, when I have the log out or shut down screen:
    I'm clicking the space bar and to unchek and it makes an error sound..
    any idea why?
    Thank you all,
    I appreciate your help!!

    It is really common when you want to login some web site and you have the option for the website to sign you in automatically and you can un/check that using the space bar, while this feature works on websites, it doesn't work anymore on my OS itself for some reason...
    Anyway,
    Thanks a lot

  • I just installed Lion 3 days ago, now my audio won't work, unless I use headphones, also space bar glitches, and other software issues..MacBook Pro 15 inch, and most everything is messed,,but the audio is killing me.

    I installed Lion a few days ago, ever since then my audio won't work, unless I use my headphones.  Also, the saver screen with password changes frequently, and the space bar works when it wants to.  There are many other issues I am having.  My IPhoto,,does not work properly, pages is not working, I have all versions.  The Office Suite is acting strange, and my email accounts work when they want,,,my IPhone 4 won't sync anymore.  The list is endless...does anyone else have this problem?

    Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

  • X220 keyboard - space bar is loud

    The space bar on the keyboard of my new x220 is rather loud, much louder than the space bar on my x61s or x31.  It's quite audible when I push it and louder on release.  Also, the left Alt key is louder than the right Alt key.
    I reseated the keyboard it seems fine.  The two bottom screws go in easily and tightly.
    I'm hesitant to send it in for warranty service, given the stories I've heard about repair and I'd rather not be without the computer.
    Any suggestions?

    Ask for a replacement keyboard of a different part number? Might work.

  • Page shift due to vertical scroll bar issue

    I'm working through a vertical scroll bar issue in my design, using a ProjectSeven CSS page template. When testing the site in my browsers (FF/Safari/IE/Opera), and IF the scroll bar is not present, the entire page shifts to the left (the width of the scroll bar) when I click a link in the left column of my design. The page does not shift when the vertical scroll bar is present. Support at P7 suggested the following fix:
    html, body {
    height: 100.1%;
    margin: 0 0 1px;
    I've tried placing this markup in about ten different places but can't seem to find the right location in the code. Is it possible for someone in the forum to take a look at my page source and show me where/how to locate this fix?
    See my test site at:
    http://www.murcal.com/test_curvi_2.html
    Thanks .  .  .  .

    PZ,
    I'd like to place the fix where you've suggested, but that's the whole issue.
    I simply don't know where my CSS ends (duh). Is it possible that you show me exactly where?
    Hopefully this is the right section of my code:
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

    <link href="p7pmm/p7PMMh07.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="all" />
    </head>
    <body>
    I've tried placing it in about ten different places, but I'm wrong everytime.
    Obviously, I'm a beginner trying to learn. I just can't seem to place it correctly.

  • Issue with space bar

    Im using Mountain Lion, and when I am typing for example something like "sportia vois " (and at the end click the space bar) the text changes to "sportif vois" and the cursor moves in front of the letter "v"...
    What's going on?

    I may be wrong but it sounds like an auto correct thing.

  • Space Bar Broken

    For some odd reason my space bar has decided to pack-up.
    I havnt done anything to the keyboard and all the gunk in it ISNT near the space bar!?
    Ive tried trouble shooting but is there anything else apart from a new key board?
    Thanks

    "all the gunk in it"
    Run the vacuum hose over the space bar key & the rest of the keys to remove the "gunk". See if there is an improvement.

  • Upgraded to snow leopard, now safari scrolls a page down when space bar is hit and sometimes crashes.  Any ideas for a fix?

    I just upgraded to the new snow leopard, now my Safari is acting loopy.  At times, the page will scroll down when I hit the space bar.  As I type this discussion the screen isn't paging down, but if I go to the tab where I have facebook loaded and hit the space bar, it acts as a page down key.  I've had safari crash about 5 times tonight for no apparent reason.  The delete key sometimes will act as a page back key.  I really have no idea whats going on.
    I've had keyboards go wacko on me before due to something being spilled on them or a wireless problem, but this keyboard is a wired keyboard and nothing was spilled on it.  It's rather new and I'm quite certain it's not a keyboard issue.
    No settings have been changed on the computer.  The only thing different today from yesterday, is the fact that I upgraded to snow leopard.
    Help would be pretty sweet.
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • U330 Bios v.68? Anyone still have this available? Still having white bar issues.

    Requesting u330 bios update v.68 beta.
    Had put away the u330 into storage last year thinking it was unfixable due to a broken LCD.  Learned through reading through the massive discussion, http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Discussion/U330-Windows-7-Drivers-Problem-amp-Solutions/td-p/1... , it was fixable bios/driver issue concerning the graphics cards.  The link for the v68 bios update no longer exists on the thread.
    What I did: Per instructions, Flashed with v.67 (latest from Lenovo website). Then fresh install of Windows 64 and updated everything through Windows.
    This fixed the power issue and most of the white bar issue. There are a few lines that pop up sometimes and the bar sometimes flashes on and off depending on the graphics use. For example, when I wash something on youtube or hulu.
    New issue: Doesn't detect the discrete ATI card.  Only the integrated Intel card is shown on device driver and the bios doesn't allow me to enable vtx/discrete card or whatever. ATI is nowhere to be detected. Tried installing ati and the new amd catalyst drivers and neither can detect the driver either.
    Reading through the thread indicated that the bios 68 beta would solve my the switching issue and the remaining white bar issues.  So I gotta ask. Does anyone have it available????

    I can't imagine that it is really a hardware problem... It only happens for me when there is some kind of moving graphics on the screen and it isn't at the front of the windows or switching between windows. And it all kind of depends on whether I'm running programs with moving graphics or am at websites with graphics/video. For example, if I go to the Hulu homepage (which has a changing banner) and then simultaneously open the start menu or a folder in windows, the flashing white bar appears. In this case, the moving graphics is now "behind" the start menu or the window. But if I then click on the maximized homepage again, the flashing white bar disappears. Interestingly, this seems to happen only when I use Google Chrome as my browser. I can also make it reliably happen by just going to the desktop. Pressing on the bottom of the screen doesn't help me at all.
    Given that this problem started for many people around the same time, which, to me, suggests that maybe there was a update to the graphics card or windows update that led to some kind of funky incompatibility.
    Do other people have "symptoms" that are as specific as mine? Maybe we have multiple problems here ...

  • Why do none of the links that I put in my outgoing yahoo emails no longer underline themselves and become live when I finish typing them and hit the space bar?

    Previously, when I typed my email address in an outgoing email or cut and pasted a link from my browser bar the link would become 'live' when I hit the space bar or 'enter' key. The link would turn blue and underline itself and the person receiving the email could just click on that live link and be taken to the site. Now the link does not turn blue or underline itself and the receiver must cut and paste the link into their browser bar to use it.
    Why? I did not change anything in Yahoo or Mozilla.
    I have deleted and reinstalled Java to no effect. I am using html in Yahoo.

    As it turns out, many others have been having similar issues on other browsers. It seems that maybe Yahoo! is taking a much longer time to load or something like that. Either way, its been working on and off all week, and the same issue even showed up yesterday with IE 8 instead of FF. It still loads faster than IE 8, but again is spotty. Some people think the issue may be with mail.yimg.com or s.yimg.com, which I could see was the loading url in the left corner whenever Yahoo! Mail was refusing to work. A couple of people said blocking it caused the issue. Alternatively, some people suggested blocking it to solve the problem. Does anyone have any information on that? Again, I have no add-ons that would be blocking any urls, and my firewall hasn't any records of it. I really don't want to do anything to mess up my browsers more than they may have already been. Thanks for all of your help so far!
