X220 touchpad issues when bottom of laptop is covered

This is kind of a weird issue that just started happening recently. Whenever the bottom of the laptop is covered (eg. when on top of bed sheets, on top of cusions, any type of fabric, etc.) the touchpad stops working or is very very unresponsive.  When just elevating it a bit or slanting the laptop a bit it works fine again.  It also works fine on hard surfaces.  From the looks of it,  it seems like if you put it on something soft that it will cover the intake vents or something it will stop working... The thumb stick or whatever that is called still works fine and the buttons still work fine and the whole laptop still works fine..
Does anyone know the cause of this?  I've had my laptop for 3 years now and this hasn't started happening until a couple months ago..  It's geting really annoying because I always use my laptop in bed and now i can't set it on top of the sheets anymore.

My first guess is your battery is swollen. Do you notice any distortion of the bottom part of the case?
2008 MBP has a battery that is user replaceable, so try running the MBP without the battery using the AC adapter.
If in fact a swelling battery is the culprit, the only real solution is to replace it.

• Thinkpad X220 touchpad issues

I've had some issues with my touchpad that have appeared in the last day or so. The touchpad in question is one of those "buttonless" designs that instead has a single physical button under the touchpad, so that you press down on the touchpad to physically click (this is independent of tap-to-click, which I usually have turned off). The touchpad previously treated two finger clicks as right clicks, and three finger clicks as middle clicks, and has since stopped doing this. Sometimes, when I click down on the touchpad, it won't let me move the mouse cursor... this is rather intermittent, and happens some times and not others.
I've tested this under a Linut Mint live USB environment, and it works as expected there, suggesting that it isn't a hardware issue. If I enable tap-to-click, it behaves in the expected way for tapping, but not the physical clicking of the touchpad button. As far as I can remember, the desired behavior specified above was the default behavior, at least under the Gnome 3 desktop that I use. I've had a look around the wiki for info, and any of the things I've tried, such as the "MatchDevicePath" stuff, doesn't work.
Any ideas?

Current version of xf86-input-synaptics in Arch has the new multi touch support for clickpads (what you call butonless design on new ProBook's and ThinkPad's) using mtdev library. It differs from previous hacks which enabled support, hacks that found their way into SuSE, Ubuntu etc. releases, and this one works different.
There are two new properties you can use in your synaptics configuration now:
        Option     "ClickPad"         "true"
        Option     "SoftButtonAreas"  "3507 0 3918 0 0 0 0 0"
First enables clickpad support, and second defines what are the right button and middle button areas. The values you see in SoftButtonAreas are the ones I have been playing with so far on my own laptop. For more information read SoftButtonAreas section in man 4 synaptics.
To help you find the right values for your self here are some tricks I've been using as well. The above SoftButtonAreas values on my clickpad result in these properties being set:
$ synclient | grep -i button
        RightButtonAreaLeft     = 3507
        RightButtonAreaRight    = 0
        RightButtonAreaTop      = 3918
        RightButtonAreaBottom   = 0
        MiddleButtonAreaLeft    = 0
        MiddleButtonAreaRight   = 0
        MiddleButtonAreaTop     = 0
        MiddleButtonAreaBottom  = 0
From here you can tweak the values on the fly, until you find suitable boundaries to use for right and middle click, and then backport them into synaptics configuration:
$ synclient RightButtonAreaLeft=3300 RightButtonAreaTop=3999

• Hmph. (Jumpy) Touchpad issues and Suspend idiosyncrasies.

(I'll try not to turn this into a novel, but I guess when I have a problem it just happens that I naturally try to describe everything that goes on for full disclosure.  Bear with me.)
I just got a hold of an older laptop, a Dell Latitude C640, and to my dismay setting up Linux on it hasn't been the walk in the park I'd hoped it'd be.  I read a bunch of articles about Linux on this machine before I got it and most seemed to have a pretty easy time of everything.  Of course this might be because the laptop is quite a few years old and older Linux kernels acted different ways, but I guess I assumed that things would be even easier using a modern distro.
The Touchpad
It worked fine on the install of Windows XP that came installed on it, with no problems at all.  Before installing any flavor of Linux I ran Knoppix on it just kind of to make sure things would go OK.  It was a little dated, being Knoppix 5.10, but I figured it'd do for my purposes.
The first time I booted it seemed to work OK, with the mouse cursor behaving mostly as it should, with a little lag.  I've used this same Knoppix disk on another laptop and it did much the same thing.  After another boot, however, I saw that things weren't going to be so easy.  The cursor immediately drifted off into one of the screen's corners (it didn't seem to care much which one it was in, as long as it was in one) and would refuse to come out.  I could move the cursor a little ways off of the edge of the screen, but not far enough to click anything, and it would immediately go back as soon as I released my finger.  So I tried a few other disks.  First I tried a CD I have for Crunchbang Linux (just a minimalist, Openbox-based Ubuntu flavor), and then Knoppix 4.  Both gave very similar results.  Crunchbang let me have a little bit more control over the cursor for a little while after booting, maybe for about a minute, and then the same behavior cropped up.  I only booted with Knoppix 4 once, but it was pretty much the same deal.
I started reading up on what might be going on and came across a thread on the Linux Mint forums that seemed to be describing an issue very close to mine (though mine is completely unrelated to the AC adapter and persists whether it's plugged in or not).  Someone in the thread suggested it was a kernel issue, since it's definitely not a hardware issue, so I then booted into a copy of DSL I had lying around, which uses the 2.4 kernel.  Sure enough everything worked without problems.  This caused me to believe, going by some of the conclusions from the Lnux Mint thread and apparently mistakenly, that the issue may have been with the 2.6 Debian kernels, so I figured I'd just get Arch installed and see how things went.
After getting X set up and working properly I saw that the issue was going to be much the same.  To get around the cursor being dragged into the corner against my will I found out that if I ran without HAL or that if I disabled hot-plugging I could use the touchpad, although not flawlessly.  Here's xorg.conf:

The "AutoAddDevice" option is the only thing that seems to make any difference in usability at all; without it I can't use the touchpad at all, and with it I can, but to varying degrees.  I've found that right after I boot up everything seems to work exactly how it's supposed to, but shortly after, sometimes 15 seconds, sometimes many minutes, things seem to get kind of unresponsive.  The cursor will go where I want it to go, but it jumps around and does it very slowly.  The mouse buttons also get very unresponsive.  Right click is especially bad, and I often have to hold down the button just to get it to do what I want, but left click is very bad too, requiring me to push the button down for almost a full second, sometimes several times.  Taps on the pad, after things go wrong, also stop being recognized, forcing me to use the buttons (which I'm OK with).  It's usable, but the behavior is not ideal whatsoever—it's rather annoying.
The most aggravating thing, I think, is that I can't seem to find anyone else using this same model that has this issue.  The latest I've seen is from January: An Ubuntu (8.10) user reports no issues and is very pleased (see comments at the bottom of the page).
Suspend (both to disk and RAM)
I actually did install the latest Crunchbang (9.04.01, the 32-bit "Lite" edition) first to see if anything would clear up by installing it rather than running the live CD, but I only had it installed for a few hours.  I didn't really get into messing with xorg.conf that much yet, only really touching "FingerLow" and "FingerHigh" settings, so the touchpad issue was still nagging me.  I did play around a bit though and found out that suspend to RAM and suspend to disk worked pretty much from the go, only requiring that I installed uswsusp.  Issuing a simple "sudo pm-suspend" or "sudo pm-hiberate" put the computer to sleep and it woke back up without any issue at all.
But suspend on Arch is proving to be a pain in the neck.  Suspend to RAM simply will not work; the computer shuts down but will not resume, leaving me only a blank screen with an unresponsive keyboard.  Suspend to disk works (using hibernate-script as pm-hibernate doesn't seem to do anything at all), but it works very poorly; both suspending and resuming take a very, very long time—so long, in fact, that I'm just better off shutting down and restarting normally, since the boot time is better.  I don't know what accounts for the drastic difference in distros, and this isn't the first experience I've had with suspension working on Ubuntu but not on Arch.  What is different in the Ubuntu implementation of pm-utils than the Arch way?  Is it the Ubuntu kernel?  Is there any way to implement the Ubuntu way with Arch (because, after all, I'd prefer to use Arch)?
I'm considering installing Crunchbang once again if I can't get things to work the way I want them to in the next few days on Arch.  And, if I can't make the touchpad work in a satisfactory manner on Cruchbang, I might just have to reinstall Windows.  I don't want to do that.

At least for the moment I've given up and reinstalled Windows XP, but I'm still kind of looking for solutions.  Suspend and hibernate are things I find to be somewhat important, but secondary to the touchpad issues, so I'm focusing on those.
Out of curiosity today I test out pretty much every live CD I have in the house.  I found an old Ubuntu CD for 6.06 (Dapper) and had a little bit of luck with it.  By default pretty much every live CD configures Xorg to use an additional mouse that isn't present; to fix this I edited the "ServerLayout" section xorg.conf to only use the touchpad.  With this old Ubuntu CD, this achieved the desired result (mostly).  The touchpad worked how it ought to with no lag, but a few features were not implemented.
Ubuntu 6.06 used the 0.4.3 version of the synaptics driver; newer Linux distros usually use 0.99 and above.  I tried my Knoppix 5.1 CD again, editing xorg.conf again to reflect the absence of an external mouse, but I did not get the behavior I was hoping for.  When I checked I found out that Knoppix 5.1 came with the 0.14.6 version of the synaptics driver.
Turns out that 0.14.5 was something of a turning point for the driver.
Makefile support for Xorg 7.0 has been added.
Two-finger scrolling and pressure dependent motion
speed have been implemented. A new parameter has
been added to give greater control over tap
behavior.
(http://freshmeat.net/projects/synaptics/releases/228794)
I suspect that the problem is coming from the addition of the "pressure dependent motion speed."  I don't know what options control this to toy with them.
However, I'm not so sure.  This sounds like it would be something that would toy with my mind, making me think I'm experiencing "mouse lag" when certain options are really just conflicting, but as I had to point out again on another forum on which I posted this same thread, when using Arch (and the most recent synaptics driver) things started out fine and only after a little while, sometimes less than a minute, sometimes many, would things start to act up.  Either some progress is being made to resolve this problem with the latest releases, or something is going wrong internally that I do not understand.  I just cannot understand why, with the newest drivers, it's only after some use that the problem kicks in while when using all others the problems are immediate.

• Split x2 - Touchpad issue after upgrading to Windows 8.1

Hello,
I bought this Split x 2 a week ago and it came with WIndows 8. Everything was working fine until I upgraded to WIndows 8.1. Now my Touchpad will freeze some times and I have to log out and log back in to my profile to unfreeze the touchpad other times I can get it to unfreeze by resetting the release touch screen buttom.
I called HP customer service and they said it was a Microsoft issue and transfer me to them. Microsoft said it was a hardware (HP) Issue and that i needed to go back to the store where I bought it
(BestBuy). I took it back yesterday to BestBuy and they gave me a knew one. I did the same thing and upgraded to Windows 8.1 and touchpad issues is back. So pretty sure is not a hardware issue.
All windows updates are completed
I checked the Touchpad's Driver and it is up to date.
NOTE: I plugged a wireless mouse to my laptop and when the touchpad freezes the wireless mouse still works.
Does anyone know a fix for this issue? Everything else works great on the laptop is just very inconvenient when you are working and you have to log out to get your touchpat to work again.
Any help would be appreaciate it.

Well you gave me a great idea.  So the same thing happened to me, the install failed due to the driver signature.  I uninstalled the current driver, then turned off the feature that requires signed drivers and installed the driver.  Everything is working so far.... the only odd thing is it doesn't show the driver any where.  I am going to try a few other things BUT the mouse hasn't stopped working for a good half hour.

• Acer V13 Touchpad issue

Hello! I've just recently bought a new Acer V13 (V3-371) which is running Windows 8.1. From the very first start my touchpad has not been working properly. It randomly freezes. Sometimes it unfreezes itself if I'm moving my fingers across the touchpad sometimes not. Then I have to press FN+F7 two times and then it's working again. Is this hardware problem or software? Do I need to download a driver?  I haven't found any touchpad driver for this particular laptop.
Thanks for help in advance!!!

Letux wrote:
Hi there, Yes there is no available driver on the acer site as ELAN or Synaptics is like a third party software..
You may check it on your mouse properties under device settings.
If your touchpad is just disabling on its own or sometimes freezing then will go ok again
thats a software fault only .. driver reloading or doing  a factory reset will fix this.
Note:If this issue just started few days ago or just 1-2 weeks ago
try running system restore on the machine and choose the date when the touchpad is working fine with no problems
as this is a possible update problem only.
If your touchpad is just Disabling on its own and you need to turn it on again by pressing Fn+7
its a possible softward or hardware.. if doing the troubleshooting steps above wont work.
You need to call Acer for assistance of repair for touchpad board replacement.As I said it started from the first start up after I've bought it. So I guess neither System Restore (which I tried to the earliest point, just in case) nor resetting it to factory settings would solve the problem.
I think its not disabling itself since I have to press Fn+F7 two times (to reset it not turn it back on).
Anyway, I was happy to find out that Acer released the Synaptics driver for the touchpad. However It did not solve the issue. Touchpad still freezing. I guess I'll be calling Acer for repair. I feel reluctant to do so though, since I've bought this laptop just two weeks ago.

• Mid 2009 17" MacBook Pro battery shutdown issue when waking from sleep.

My unibody 17" MacBook Pro occasionally shuts down on waking from sleep when it isn't plugged in.
When I open the lid to wake it I can hear the hard drive and fans starting to spool, and then the next second it's off and silent. The laptop doesn't mind being turned on again after it does this and might go a week without doing it again, equally it might do it next time I try and wake it from sleep. It does this regardless of battery charge level.
coconutBattery says the battery still has 86% of its designed capacity, and I haven't noticed anything else untoward regarding battery charging or performance when in use.
So my question is two fold:
1) Does it sound like the battery's internal processor is malfunctioning, or could it be something else?
2) If it is the battery's internal processor, will replacing the battery replace the processor, or are they fitted separately (in defference to the 'internal' part of its name)?

I have had issues when i press the space bar from sleep, sometimes it wakes but others i'm forced to power it on with the power button.
Is this similar to anything you've experianced?
Its so inconsistantly these days, but i'm also connected to an external screen.

• HT4913 How do I resolve this issue when I try to download iTunes. I receive this error message " iTunes64Setup.exe is corrupt or invalid"

How do I resolve this issue when I try to download iTunes on my laptop?  It fails because of this error message " iTunes64Setup.exe is corrupt or invalid"

That suggests that the installer is getting damaged during the download.
I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

• HT4907 Password Issue when attempting to enable Back to My Mac in iCloud Preferences - HELP?

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I have a problem enabling Back to My Mac. When I try and enable B2MM in the iCloud preferences window, I am asked to enter my Apple ID password. It says the password is incorrect, even though it IS 100% correct. I've even tried resetting my password (so that the password lives up to the latest security requirements for passwords, etc). So, it's definitely correct, and I'm able to login to my Apple account here (on this Apple laptop as well as on my iPad and iPhone)... it's not an issue when I log in anywhere else... I am only told my password is incorrect when attempting to enable Back to My Mac in the iCloud preferences pane.
Help?
Many thanks!

Do these make installation of memeo superfluous? Would I need memeo for daily back up?
From what I gather, you couldn't pay me to use Memeo, nor actually a Seagate enclosure, nor many USB only drives, (USB is not bootable on PPC Macs).
I've used maybe a few dozen backup Apps on the Mac, and I'd personally judge only Apple's Time Machine worse than that one.
If you had it to do all over again, you'd get a case with Firewire, one with an Oxford chipset, not containing a Green Drive, not a Seagate Drive, not less than 7200 RPM drive, & a 32MB Cache, not with a One-Button touch feature, ( not a Bus powered drive like...

• Issue when installing SQL Server Express 2012 - "The requested control is not valid for this service" + "Could not find the database engine startup handle"

Good morning,
I'm experiencing the following issue when installing Microsoft SQL Server Express 2012 (with tools, SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe) on the laptop of my company;
Installation goes plain until around the end of the progress bar, it stops on the setup of
SqlEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_Cpu32
giving 7-8 times, even pressing "Cancel", the message "The requested control is not valid for this service";
After this, I receive one last message ""Could not find the database engine startup handle", then installation ends with failures, in particular the Database Engine and the Server Replication failed to be installed.
I've put in my SkyDrive the error log I received after the install;
I'm at full disposal if you need further information,
thank you in advance
Best regards
Francesco

Well, i just ran into this issue and the problem was lack of admin rights. It was my company's laptop so got the setup initiated by my company's IT team with admin rights. However, the upon completion of setup, i go the same error messages as stated above:
SqlEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_Cpu32
giving 7-8 times, even pressing "Cancel", the message "The requested control is not valid for this service";
After this, I receive one last message ""Could not find the database engine startup handle", then installation ends with failures, in particular the Database Engine and the Server Replication failed to be installed.
Also, if you open SQL Server Configuration, the status of the service is "Change Pending" and you would not be able to set the startup login type to Local Service/System/Network.
Then, I just got my account added as Local Admin and then tried to start the service and was able to.
However, I am not sure whether same was the case for you.
Please mark the answer as helpful if i have answered your query. Thanks and Regards, Kartar Rana

• Satellite P300-1AN - Touchpad issue with AC adapter

I've a Satellite P300-1AN notebook and since the beginning (two weeks)
I have a touchpad issue: it is not immediately responsive and the pointer trembles when touching the pad. Very often it freezes for just one or two seconds.
This is VERY annoying. A USB mouse works perfectly.
I tried reinstalling ALPS drivers, tried Synaptics ones, tried just Windows Vista drivers: no way.
Now I have found the reason: this issue is present only when the notebook is powered by AC adapter.
With battery the touchpad is perfect.
I contacted Toshiba Service and thay said that they won't change the AC adapter if I don't try before a complete system restore!
Isn't it simpler just try with a new adapter and only then, if the problem persists, try more drastic procedures?
Has anyone had this same issue?

> I contacted Toshiba Service and thay said that they won't change the AC adapter if I don't try before a complete system restore! Isn't it simpler just try with a new adapter and only then, if the problem persists, try more drastic procedures?
The point is that your notebook should be always checked using the Toshiba factory configuration.
Why? Because the ASP wants to be sure that this issue is not related to a software problem (compatibility issue with 3rd party applications). The software issues are not covered by warranty.
Furthermore the ASP will always recover the notebook before checking any hardware parts for a malfunction. Therefore you should always backup your data from the HDD before you will send the notebook for checking.
I would recommend to reinstall the OS using the Toshiba recover disk and then check if the issue would appears.
If yes then you can contact the ASP again and could provide all details which are necessary for an technician.
Bye

• External display issues when waking display from sleep

After waking my external display from sleep (the entire Macbook was not asleep, just the external display), the garbled colored dots kept appearing at the top and bottom of the screen, only then for the entire display to go black, then about 5-10 seconds later the images comes back, but with the garbled colored dots at the bottom. It will keep doing this over and over again.
It's only happened once so far, but I seem to remember reading about some issues when waking from sleep with the new unibody Macbooks with regards to external displays. Is this a known issue with these Macbooks?

There have been similar reports. However, not all external displays in combination with a MacBook will exhibit this problem. Thus, it seems either display specific or something that is caused by a cross between one display and a MacBook.
I assume that you are using one of Appe's mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters to connect to the external display. In that case have you installed the latest firmware update for the adapter?

• Ethernet light remains on even when DV7 series laptop has been shut down

Product: HP Pavilion DV7-7008tx
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
Issue: When I shut down my laptop and leave the ethernet cable plugged in, the ethernet light stays on. Removing the cable turns the light off, but putting it back in brings the light back on.
Is this meant to happen, or is there a way to stop this?

Do you have the "Wake on Lan" setup in the BIOs? The feature allows the computer to be woken up my network inputs. You will need to boot into the BIO to turn off this feature. You may be able to disable this feature in Windows 7 as well. Here is a good article on how to disable/enable the Wake on LAN feature: Wake-on-Lan (WOL) for Windows 7 Made Easy!
Hope this helps!

• Transparency issues when printing from Illustrator CS5

I recently designed a flyer for an event that a group of artists and I are doing as a not-for-profit organization that we started, to help clean up the area and promote the arts.
When I print the file (saved as an AI), the colors are bold, the font is crisp, and everthing overall looks fantastic, apart from this "box" around some of the elements I have created/added to the file.
When being printed from an exported jpeg format, the boxes are not present, but the image overall is of lesser quality (i know it's from being compressed to a jpeg), and the colors are not as bold.
I only have a black & white printer, a Brother MFC-7220. I only found out this issue when my curiousity got the best of me, and printed it to see what it'd look like on paper (8.5"x11") before we sent it off to the print shot. This is when I noticed the problem.
The elements which have this box around them were edited in Photoshop CS 6 (trial), where I had (at least thought), disposed of each elements background, so I could import them into AI as objects, without any background.
The files were edited in PS in new documents with a transparent background, saved as a PSD, then "opened" in Illustrator where I simply copied the object and pasted into the AI file I was working in. I've tried recreating/re-adding the elements from PS back into AI with the same issue.
The image also looks perfect on my screen, no boxes whatsoever. I've tried playing around with printer settings, transparency/raster settings, but the only thing I can get close, is the low-quality jpeg file. This problem also happens when exporting to a PDF, which is what I typically use for my printing format from AI.
Any ideas what's going on here? The pictures linked below show a photo of the AI and the jpeg, and a screencap of my desktop as the AI stands right now. The jpeg export has a few minor changes to it, but are still otherwise the same. The only items that are "supposed" to have this, are the logos for our sponsors in the bottom-left corner.
I'm stumped, nothing is working that I've read about, and I need to get these printed as soon as I can! Any help would be appreciated - please keep in mind I'm a novice when it comes to AI/PS, I know mostly basics.
PICTURES

I, too am having the same issue printing from AI CS5. I have edited images in PS CS5 and there is a transparent background. I then placed (File>Place) the PSD files into AI and everything looks good on screen. However, I'm also getting a strange box that appears around my images—though the box itself isn't a solid opaque—it looks more like there's a overprint or screen and so it just shifts the colors behind it. I've tried saving the images as transparent PNGs with the same result. I've also tried playing with my transparency settings in the print dialogue to no avail.
Strangely this is only occurring when I print at 100% size. I came upon this by happenstance when I accidentally printed a copy at 75% and everything was fine. If anyone has any insights, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• Alignement issue when exporting to PDF

Hello,
I'm having some alignment issues when exporting an InDesign file to PDF.
I have a couple of square pictures, touching eachother at the edges. These are aligned bang on in InDesign (the lines overlap), but when exporting to a PDF and viewing in there, it seems that some seem to jump up slightly.
Is this just a display issue or a setting issue when exporting to PDF?
Thanks
Benny

The detail is cropped too tight for me to tell how many photos are intersecting there. Is there a vertical intersection as well? If not, I think you're looking at a very slightly non-rectangular frame, if there is, then you might still be looking at a non-rectangular frame, or the frames are not perfectly aligned, which doesn't surprise me if you snapped to a guide -- I find that less than 100% reliable since CS6.
Presuming that you've zoomed in to show us the problem, that's probably a single pixel misalignment and you'd be very hard pressed to see it in printed output without a loupe.
You can check the bottom edge of the top photo, and the top edge of the bottom photo(s) for being out of horizontal by using the direct select tool to select the corner points and seeing if the y-coordinate is the same on both sides of the frame.
My printer tell me to always overlap frames, rather than butting them, for trapping, for what that's worth, but I don't always do what he says, and I've never had a problem.
