X220 Won't boot Samsung 830 SSD

I have a Lenovo X220 laptop with a 320GB Hitachi hard drive,
and it works just fine. But I decided I needed more speed,
so I bought a Samsung 830 SSD for it. I cloned the entire
X220 hard drive to the SSD (using a USB external case and
HDClone4), and everything looks fine on the SSD (when viewed
with Partition Wizard on another machine while the SSD is still
in the USB enclosure). But the SSD will not boot in the X220!
It starts, and in fact it gets as far as saying "Starting Windows",
and then moving the four color dots (of Windows 7) around a
little bit, and then it momentarily flashes the dreaded
white-on-blue screen (so fast you cannot tell what it says),
and then it enters the recovery-menu screen. Bummer!
I called Lenovo tech support and they essentially told me to
GET LOST because they "don't support" me installing an SSD
(even though the X220 User's Guide shows exactly that).
I've used HDClone4 several times in the past (to clone hard
drives for my stable of Lenovo T60 laptops), and it seems to
always work just fine. So why is this not working for my X220
and Samsung 830? Note that, while I don't expect Lenovo to
certify compatibility with every flea-bit SSD on the market,
this Samsung 830 is highly regarded by many well-respected
reviewers (Tom's Hardware, my favorite, in particular).
Has anyone here heard this song before? Is there something
peculiar about the X220 and/or the Samsung 830? I'd sure
appreciate any helpful advice. Thanks.
Solved!

Did you uninstall (+ reboot) Lenovo Rapid Boot before cloning the HDD drive ?

  • [HELP] Macbook Pro won't boot Samsung Evo SSD internally

I recently bought a 512 Gb Samsung Evo SSD for my 2011 Macbook Pro. After cloning the harddrive using superduper! I installed the harddrive internally and booted it up. I first received an error saying "Unapproved Caller SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple Software". Confused, I hit OK and it proceeded to showing the Apple bootup screen with the spiral underneath. I decided to restart the machine and this time I did not receive the error, however it just got stuck at the apple boot up screen with the spiral spinning for days. I brought it to Tigerdirect and they tried everything they could (apparently) and had no luck with cloning, fresh install, reinstalling OS, and so on. They told me the Boot Rom only (for some reason) recognizes the original seagate HDD and my boot rom is messed up. Freaking out, I tried placing the SSD in the computer and connect the original HDD via USB 3.0. I booted the HDD by holding down option during bootup then proceeded to system preferences and tried to changed the start up disk to the SSD. However, I received an error saying Bless tool was unable to set boot disk. I am now at a loss, and worried my pricey SSD will become dead weight. Please help
    Thanks for anyones help

Were you ever able to fix the problem, I have the same issue.

  • Boot up time with Samsung 830 SSD? - MacBook Pro 13" 2.9GHz Mid2012

    Hey everyone,
Just got my first mac ever! Snagged a pretty nice deal on a MacBook Pro 2.9 GHz 13" Mid2012 model by getting it refurbished.
I immediately cloned my hard drive using CCC and installed a Samsung 830 SSD (256 GB).  I believe I did install it correctly as using black magic speed test I put up some pretty good numbers --> 400 MB/s Write and 490 MB/s Read.
However, the boot up time seems a bit slow for a out of box MacBook Pro considering I upgraded the hard drive.
I was clocking in around 40 seconds... Is that abnormally slow?
I know its kind of silly looking timing the start up of your computer... I just expected faster, and this is my first hard drive installation... I hope I didn't mess up!
Thanks for your help in advance,
    Weston

    A bit simplifying :
there are two parts in boot process - one-before spinning thing, other - spinning thing to desktop.
First part is hardware inits, you can not speed it up. It is for sure longer for your MBP than for her - its normal, more hardware and it is more sophisticated so longer init.
Second part depends on HD (SSD) speed.
Say so - I have M4 SSD and second part is 1 to 2 spins until login window. Should be more or less same for you.
If it is not so - probably something is not good with filesystem and some config files, most probably due to cloning instead of install. Reboot from recovery, repair drive (first - drive as a whole, second - boot partition), then reboot permissions. reboot two times as normal. see what'll happen with timing.

  • Install a samsung 830 SSD in my macbook pro 2011.

I am trying to install a samsung 830 SSD in my brand new Macbook pro. Whenever I install it and boot the mac I get three beeps.
When I put the old HD back in it workes fine. The SSD workes fine on a windows machine.
I have seen other macbooks with this SSD work just fine.
    What could be the problem?

The samsung SSD comes with a very handy USB cable so I hooked it up to my Imac and repartitioned the disk.
The SSD works without problems on the mac too apparently.
Unfortunately the Macbook still gives me the three beeps when I put the SSD back in.
This is quite frustrating, both the SSD and the Mac are brand new.
If I cant solve it myself which do I send back? The Macbook works fine with the original disk, the SSD works fine in any other PC.
I will try to clone my existing OSX to the SSD and let you know if it worked.
Even if that worked I still would not be confident everything is fine.
The last thing I want is to find out my Macbook is malfunctioning 2 days after the warranty is expired. (wouldnt be the first time )
Thanks for the help so far!

  • Kernel panic - trying to install a Samsung 830 ssd

    Hi everybody,
please forgive me for my poor English.
I'm trying to install a Samsung 830 ssd with an optibay on my MBP early 2011. The ssd works fine, and I get a Sata 3 speed connection.
The first problem I found was that Disk Utility wasn't able to initialize it! "Posix error: i/o error" or "unable to locate memory".
So I inizitialized it with MacDrive on windows xp on another pc.
Here comes the second problem: when I boot with my ssd on the optibay there's a kernel panic, but when I boot with the superdrive everything is fine. So what can I do? Thanks for your help!

There's an update: I uninstalled Parallels. Then I connected the ssd to my mac with a sata usb cable, and everything worked fine, I initialized it and I tried to copy some files and it was ok..
So I put it into my optibay and booted Osx, this time no Kernel panic!
But now there's a new problem: when I try to copy files or create a folder on the ssd I got error -50 can't complete the operation.. Both with finder and muCommander.
So what shuold I have to do now?
    I'm getting a little upset..

  • Request: AHCI Support for Samsung 830 SSD on gx660r

    Hi Svet,
i have bought a Samsung 830 SSD for my gx660r notebook, but i realized that it is not recognized in the BIOS in AHCI mode.
The MSIHQ Flashing Tool says the following about my BIOS:
    Mainboard:  MS-16F1
PCB Version:  To be filled by O.E.M.
    BIOS Version: E16F1IMS VER3.0J
    BIOS Date:  28.03.2011
    EC-FW Version:
Could you provide me with a BIOS that works with my Samsung SSD?
    I already donated some bucks.
And can you give me a hint how i can rescue my system in case the update fails?
As far as i know, my notebook does not have m-flash (at least i've seen no reference to m-flash), is there another way to restore the backup bios in case something goes wrong?
BTW: Im using the latest version of the flashing tool, but it does not offer the mode 2 (where i can point to a single bios file). Can you provide the modded bios as a zip/rar file so i can use it with mode1?
    Many thanks,
    Sascha

Nope, in a case of bad flash there is no recovery.
Else if everything goes fine, you can restore original BIOS if you want to do this for some reason.

To prevent using the wrong flasher[which can kill the notebook],
Tool automatically Disable Mode2 when notebook is detected.

  • Need help installing Samsung 830 SSD on MacBook Pro 13"

Hello everyone, my MacBook Pro recently crashed a couple weeks ago and I tried to get it working but no luck! So I figured it was the perfect time to make an investment in SSD and check out how it is.
So I bought a Samsung 830 SSSD 128gb. I installed the hard drive and inserted the Mac OS X disc and booted up my MBP. Once I went through the installation, it asked me where I would like to install the OS on but my SSD didn't appear. Can someone please help me? I am not too savvy with computers.
As of now, I only have access to my PC so someone please help me  :( Thanks in advance! :)
    -David

OK, you have an original installation disc (usually a gray disc that came with your Mac)?
Boot from the Install disc. You should have the option of either selecting Disk Utility from the main menu or from a "Utilities" menu at the top.
    Open Disk Utility.
You should see a disk with a strange name. Select it and choose "Erase" with the Format as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and a Name such as "Macintosh HD" (or whatever you'd like to name it. Just select erase - no need for a secure erase or anything.
Once you've formatted the SSD you should be able to quit Disk Utility and continue installing the system on the newly formatted drive.
Give it a shot - call back with any problems as I'll be up all night...

  • Why is the SSD on 2011 Macbook Air much slower then 2010 Macbook Pro with Samsung 830 SSD (less then half the speed) ?

Why is a laptop designed from ground up to use flash slower then a older laptop with a upgraded SSD from a 3rd party?
My old MBP is more then 2x the speed (read/write) with a SSD upgrade (Samsung 830) then my Air.
Any fixes or mods to boost the flash speed of the Air?

We would like you to show us how to do that.......Especially when the Samsung 830 will not fit the Air.....Please don't say duct tape....
Ok, scratch that idea.  Let me think for a moment,,,em,,,em.  OK I got it.  Sell both units and buy a mid Macbook Air 2012 version.

  • Mountain Lion won't boot after restart (SSD problem?)

Hey, I just installed ML on my OCZ Octane SSD, everything went ok, finally the setup assistant requested reboot which is what I did. However, it got stuck while rebooting and now I can only see flashing question mark icon and ML won't boot at all. The only thing I can do is to boot up in safe mode. I guess that the problem is my SSD (indilinx controller) which ML can't handle (it ran on Lion just fine). Does anyone have the same experience? Any clue how to resolve this? Thank you.

I've confirmed with OCZ that there is a firmware issue with Mountain Lion and they are working on a fix as of July 31, 2012.
No word from them yet, other than the official statement.
I too had an issue with my Octane booting once after install, then never booting again. Had to to a TM restore, back on Lion till this is resolved. Kind of frustrating, but there must have been a low level system change that affected things.

  • W520 and Samsung 830 SSD

    Hello:
After several issues with a Mushkin Chronos DX 480GB I finally returned it.
Now I'm thinking in buying a Samsung 830 512GB SSD and it a 7mm disk, my question is if it's necessary to buy the notebook kit or not of this disk.
    Without notebook kit:

    With notebook kit

    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

The "spacer" is needed in the W520 if you install it in the primary drive bay. The rubber rails are sized for the 9.5mm drive if you initially received the 500gb HDD (the 320gb HDD is 7mm so no spacer is required). The Samsung SSD is first mounted on the drive carrier, then the spacer is placed on top of the SSD, then the rubber rails are placed on either side. The cobination fits snugly in the drive bay.
I recommend the Newmodeus HDD caddy if you are going to use the former HDD in the UltraBay. That caddy does not require the carrier and comes with all needed screws to secure the drive.

I recently installed Yosemite on an External SSD with a firewire connection and all went well with the installation and first boot. After completing set up and restarting my iMac Yosemite will no longer boot from the firewire connection it will boot to the loading bar and then get the dreaded Goest Buster Emblem, if I swap out the SSD to USB connection it boots normally. I have 6 SSD Drives with Mavericks and Lion installed on that will boot from the Firewire Connection.  Any suggestions ?

Additionally when testing while the SSD is connected to a USB Connection and booted if I attach any firewire device they are not recognized or connected to the operating system.

  • New Mac Pro - won't boot up with SSD drives attached

I have a new Mac Pro. It came with the stock 1TB HD. I installed two OWC SSD drives in the two optical drive bays. I booted up and the MacPro saw the two new drives. I set up the two new drives into a RAID0 setup with Disk Utility which worked fine. Then I cloned the 'Macintosh HD' drive so that I could use the two new SSDs as my boot drive.
When I removed the stock 1TB drive the machine will not boot up. I am stuck on the gray startup screen and it never even makes it to the Apple logo.
Even worse, when I reconnect the stock 1TB drive the machine will still not boot up if either or both of the SSD drives are connected. When I remove the SSD drives the machine boots fine.
Very weird - must be some weird RAID stuff going on.
    Any ideas?
    David

    Hi dschamis
Just out of interest, what application did you use to clone from your HDD to the OWC SSD?
I had the same problem, but I was using only one SSD, when I cloned from a VelociRaptor 300GB HDD to an OCZ Agility EX SSD in December 2009.
The SSD "bricked", and when I contacted OCZ they told me that they did not recommend cloning from a HDD to a SSD. In fact they definitely advised against doing so.
I had used SuperDuper to clone from the HDD to the SSD.
When I received the replacement SSD ( OCZ sent me their top of their range Vertex EX), I didn't take any chances, and I did a clean install of the Mac OS and all my applications.
Everything was 100% OK, and I have not had a single problem with the SSD since then, but I never clone to it or from it. I just use Time Machine to back up to a WD My Book SE II 2T external drive, but I do have the original 640GB Apple (WD) HDD as a backup/emergency system boot drive in an external enclosure.
I have just ordered, and received, an OWC MercuryExtreme Pro RE SSD, which I will be using as my system boot drive solely for my photography related applications, and I will use the Vertex EX for the remainder of my applications.
However, I am not even going to risk using SuperDuper to clone the OS or any of the applications from the Vertex EX to the OWC SSD, although OCZ said it was OK to clone from SSD to SSD, and I will do a clean install of the Mac OS and the photography related applications on the Mercury Extreme Pro RE SSD.
Hope all goes well when you receive your replacement SSD.
If in doubt do a clean install of the Mac OS!
    Regards,
    Bill

  • Yoga 2 won't boot from upgraded ssd

Hi, I've successfully installed an M.2 SSD in my yoga 2 and cloned my start-up disk to it as i want the new drive to hold my windows install.
I changed the boot orderin BIOS to the ssd but that didn't work. I think because there was an option that enabled always booting from UEFI first. Since the ssd is only listed under legacy I changed it to boot from legacy first.
However now when I try to boot I just get some text about asix usb dongle which i'm afraid I don't understand. Presumably it's trying to boot from usb but I cant figure out why this might be. Any ideas how I can get this to work.
    Thanks in advance

press f8 to load when you see lenovo logo at start-up, and select safe mode. post back the results.

  • X220 won't boot sometime

    Hi
I am facing a very weired problem with my lenovo x220. I have been using this laptop for few years and never faced any issues with my x220. But from last few weeks i am facing a problem that cannot be ractiifed. I have changed my laptop screen as it was shattered few weeks ago. Since that i have problem to power on my laptop. I have remove the battery and hold the power button 30 second  to reset the battery. Sometime it works and sometime it doesn't. I have changed the CMOS battery as it was identified as dead. After replacing the old CMOS battery with a new one i am still facing the same problem. Sometime the laptop did power on after removing the battery and hold the power on button for 30 seconds and put the battery back to power up but it is doesnt work all the time. Sometime i have to try few hours by removing the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Once it power on it works fine and even if i shutdown the laptop it still manages to power on normally straight after but if the laptop didnt turned on for few hours it goes back to that stupid mode of not powering up. Can someone please help me/advice me regarding to this issues. Thank you in advnace.

Thanks for the suggestions, I managed to find out what was wrong:
There is a boot exclusion list in BIOS that I was not aware of, and USB flash drive was on here by default on my machine for some reason. If anybody else have USB boot issues, this is how I got it working:
With a bootable USB Flash Drive plugged in, go into BIOS settings, Startup, select the >Boot header and press enter so you get the boot device order list. Scroll down past the last entry in this list, and you will jump to a boot exclusion list. Find your USB flash drive here and type "!" to get it off the exclusion list and on to the boot device order list. Save BIOS changes. Now it will also show on F12 at boot, and boot.

  • Anyone had luck with the Samsung 830 SSD?

    Opinions? Rumors? Problems?

    I've used it before....No issues......
It's also the same drive that apple uses on their Retina Macbook Pro - SM256E and SM512E.
Problem happens when installing them in an older Macbook/Macbook Pros. (2009).
It's a good drive and one of the fastest out there.
It's also currenlty the best one for using the lowest power comsumption.

I have a .dng. Edit in PSCC with some layers, quit PS and save back to LR. Everything fine. I add some radial filters in LR, a new crop, and a post crop vignette (for example). Then I want to edit the original in PS again, so I choose edit original.
