X230 keyboard - left shift not always registering

Hi. I'm new here, so please forgive me if there's any local etiquette I haven't noticed!
I bought my first Lenovo machiine recently, which was an X230 from the UK Outlet Store. I was a bit surprised that this arrived with a "US International" keyboard rather than a UK one, but with a little bit of remapping I've made it work for me, and I like the machine very much :-)
However, I've found that when typing fast the left shift doesn't always seem to register. I can't pin down exactly what causes it in terms of the part of the key that's pressed or anything, because it doesn't occur if I slow down to examine what's going on... but it's getting quite frustrating to miss capital letters off so many sentences!
Is this slightly hard-to-define problem something that Lenovo would easily resolve under warrenty? And could it be done without me having to send the machine back to them? (Because it's from the Outlet Store it has a return-to-base warrenty, but I understand that the keyboard is a user replacable unit?)
Thanks for any advice.
Simon.

you probably just need a new keyboard.

Jin Li

  • Left SHIFT key always truncated with OPTION key

Every time I press down the left shift key the option key also gets activated. For instance, leftshifta=Å, leftshiftq=Œ and so forth. I noticed that when I went through the initial setup and confirmed with the keyboard viewer. How can I get this fixed without taking the computer back?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You can't fix this yourself you'll have to take it back to Apple and have them replace the keyboard.

  • Keyboard left shift and uppercase y (see, there it didn't work)

I am unable to get an uppercase Y using the normal combination of that letter and the left shift key. To get it in the previous sentence I used the right shift key. The caps lock key and the right shift key seem to work normally. The left shift key produces all of the appropriate characters except the upper case of Y.
Is this a hardware or software problem?
Can someone suggest how I might troubleshoot this?

Open the Speech pane of System Preferences and look at the settings for the listening key and the speech key; if either of these has become set to that keyboard combination, change the setting.

  • HT1338 My MacBook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.8) won't allow keyboard to type an upper case 'C' using the shift key...works fine with caps lock, or, with my Typinator workaround using double-typed lower case c (not always best). Any ideas?

My MacBook Pro keyboard won't type an upper case 'C' using the shift key... only with caps lock. Workaround has been to use Typinator by typing a double lower case c, not always the best solution. Mac is a refurbished model, which initially was fine. Apple tech helped me correct the quirk when it first appeared, but now it has returned and refuses fixes. Any ideas?

I'm willing to bet that this has something to do with iCloud.  I've been facing a frozen computer nearly every time I go into it.
In Activity Monitor I have seen two programs associate with iCloud that take up about 2.5 GB of memory (I only have 4 in the computer) -- causing everything to freeze.  One of these is called "iCloud Helper" and the other one is something like "Address Book Sync helper" -- I see parts of these names in the stuff you have posted.
I am at my wits' end with these and have written to Apple asking them to do away with these or fix them.  To get rid of the Address book sync thing I have gone into system preferences for iCloud and unchecked Contacts -- but then spontaneously it gets rechecked.  And oftentimes after I Force Quit the iCloud helper, it spontaneously turns on again.  My conclusion --- the iCloud is basically unusable.  It turns a Mac into the most useless, clogged, sluggish PC.  If this is happening to a lot of people's computers -- and I see no reason why yours or mine should be an exception -- these programs just might destroy Apple itself.
So -- I'm about to completely give up on iCloud, and I suspect that others will too unless this gets fixed.

  • Logitech k400 keyboard - there is not a key to the left or right of shift

i got the logitech k400 keyboard to use with my macbook air and an external monitor. it's a little wireless keyboard with a built in trackpad.
when i got it, it worked great right away. i plugged in the the usb receiver and it worked just fine.
i took it to work where i also have a logitech keyboard but not one with a trackpad like the k400. the logitech unifying reciever says it will work with any logitech device that has that symbol on it. so it worked fine there too.
when i got back, the macbook air no longer recognizes the logitech keyboard. i've tried new batteries, all sorts of variations on restarting the laptop, taking batteries out and in, removing/replacing usb receiver.
when i try to go to system prefs for the macbook air and set up the keyboard, it wants me to press the key to the right of the shift key. well, on this keyboard, this not a key to the right of the shift key.
there is no software at the logitch site and their forums haven't yielded any results.
i don't understand why it worked and now it doesn't. i used it at home for two days before taking it to work so i know that it definitely was functioning as expected with the macbook air.
i'm not sure if it's a mac problem or logitech problem and i'm not sure how to figure that out.
    any help would be appreciated.
    thanks!

you would press the z key which is right of the left shift key and the / key which is (left of)beside the up arrow key, this worked for me!Basically you skip over the up arrow key.

  • Page back keyboard and mouse shortcut not always working

On some pages the "go back and forward one page" functions of my mouse do not work.
Also the keyboard shortcuts ALT+left arrow and ALT+ right arrow give the same issue.
The buttons on the toolbar are functioning like they should however.
The alternative keyboard shortcuts backspace and SHIFt+backspace also work.
(but not when using google because google thinks I want to type so this is no workaround for my programmable mouse)
I tried on another computer and on that the keyboard shortcuts also dont always work.
(but mouse does, it's a cheapy mouse without software, go figure)
I can reproduce the page on which the shortcuts do not work.
Just go to google or any other website and then go to:

  • Left shift key of my new macbook pro retina 13 is always pressed.

My 1 month old macbook pro retina 13 inch model has a problem now. Left shift key is always pressed which results in booting to safe mode.
Currently i have overcome the issue by pressing "option" while booting and used keyremap software to disable "left shift key". Since this a temporary solution, I would like to know what would have caused the shift key to behave like this. If the key not working would have been better, but it is always in pressed state.
Please let me know what I can do to rectify this. If keyboard to be replaced, approximately how much it will cost for the same? I am looking for a positive response....

Hi BobRz, you are probably talking about the screen display which normaly dims during low light conditions, and that's true. but my concern is the keyboard brightness, it suppose to increase in low light conditions, but instead it dims to the point that i can no longer see the letters on the keyboard. I have viewed a youtube video about the normal adustment function, and mine is doing the opposite

  • My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).  The key behaves the same for the laptop keyboard and for an external Apple keyboard?  This just started in last week after 6 months of use

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use.  The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support.  Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences.  Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key).  I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility.  The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

  • BUG: KEYBOARD SHORTCUT KEYS DO NOT ALWAYS ACTIVATE A SERVICE (A WORKFLOW)

BUG: KEYBOARD SHORTCUT KEYS DO NOT ALWAYS ACTIVATE A SERVICE (A WORKFLOW)
When you assign a keyboard shortcut to a Service (such as a Service Workflow created in Automator) using the System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts, if that shortcut key combination includes the Command key, pressing that shortcut will always successfully activate the Service. No problem there.
However, shortcut key combinations that do not include the Command key (for example, the shortcut key combo Ctrl-Shift-D) WILL NOT activate the Service in any newly opened application, until you click on the Services Menu option in that application.
As soon as you click on the application's Services Menu, this seems to bind the shortcut key combo to the Service, and thereafter, that keyboard shortcut will activate the Service in that particular app. But if you then quit and reopen the app, you'll find the Service will once again lose its binding to the shortcut key combination and will thus fail to work again.
This means that shortcut key combinations such as Ctrl-D, Ctrl-Shift-D, F15, Alt-F15, etc are not really viable shortcuts for Services, because they will not work in any newly-opened application until you click on the Services Menu in that application.
This bug thus greatly limits the shortcuts that you can employ for Services, because you can only reliably use shortcut key combos that contain the Command key. This is a fault that Apple really needs to fix. This is a very old glitch: I notice it is present in Snow Leopard 10.6.8, as well as Yosemite 10.10.1.
This bug does not apply to application shortcuts, however, or to other shortcuts in the Shortcuts Preference Pane, just to Services shortcuts (including the Mac's default Services, or any Services you make yourself using Workflows on the Automator software).
    To give some examples:
The following keyboard shortcuts for Services WILL NOT work until you click on the Services Menu in the application you are using (and they will cease working again when you quit and reopen the app):
    Ctrl-X
    Ctrl-Shift-X
    Ctrl-Alt-X
    Ctrl-Alt-Shift-X
    Alt-X
    Alt-Shift-X
    F1, F2, F3, etc
So until Apple fixes this bug, the above type of key combinations, that do not contain the Command key, are best avoided as shortcuts for Services. It is particularly unfortunate that function keys F1 to F19 do not work reliably, as these would make great single-key shortcuts to Services.
However, the following sort of keyboard shortcuts for Services, all containing the Command key, once set up will always work without fail:
    Command-Alt-X
    Command-Ctrl-X
    Command-Shift-X
    Command-Ctrl-Shift-X
    Command-Alt-Ctrl-Shift-X
    Command-F1, Command-F2, Command-F3, etc
So all the above can be reliably used as shortcuts to Services.
    Here X denotes keyboard keys such as A, B, C, 1, 2, 3, =, \, [, etc.
Note that even for keyboard shortcuts containing the Command key, you may very occasionally need to click the Services Menu to get them to work initially in an application (notably in the System Preferences application itself). But if this is necessary, it is just required once when they are first set up, and thereafter the shortcuts containing the Command key will always work without fail.
The above was tested on Yosemite 10.10.1, but most likely applies to other versions of OS X as well, as I believe this bug is an old one. This bug is definitely present in Snow Leopard 10.6.8, because I have observed this same fault in an old Mac I have that runs Snow Leopard.
I have reported this bug to Apple, so hopefully they will see my report and act upon it. However, it might be an idea if others also report this problem of Services shortcuts not working property, to ensure that Apple get the message. You can report a bug to Apple via their bug feedback page here.

Exactly where do you want to use a GO BACK "shortcut" in Bridge?  Maybe I don't even understand what you mean by Go Back.  Bridge is only a file browser, nothing more. It doesn't open, edit, manipulate or save files at all.
Are you simply referring to going back to view a folder that you viewed before?
Please don't take this a criticism.  As someone who will gladly pay money not to have to learn any shortcuts at all, I'm just puzzled and curious, that's all.

  • 3 letters + left shift key not working - 2 of them + right shift key working

    Hi all,
as in subject, I have just bought a laptop g50-45, italian keyboard.
    I encountered this problem:
"LEFT shift key" + "e" or "d" or "c" combinations do not work. Nothing happens.
"RIGHT shift key" + "e" or "d" work properly
"RIGHT shift key" + "c" do not work. Nothing happens
CAPS key + "e" or "d" or "c" work properly.
I noticed this issue before making any updates of  windows 8.1
I tried making an update of the bios and later updating windows but the problem is still there.
I check with an external keyboard and everything work correctly
I don't think it could be a mechanical problem because "e", "d" and "c" keys alone work properly, so it seems more a software side problem.
    Thank you for your help.

thanks, i thought there some quick procedure to do before heading to apple store. i was just wondering, it was working for a while, and then suddenly like that. i have macbook 10.6.8 software. intel core 2 duo. less than a year old, if i'm not mistaken.

It's a new machine - and the Thunderbolt Display is meant to work with it. You need to just make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them fix whatever is wrong.
If you like, you could always try a SMC reset and a PRAM/NVRAM reset to see if either of those will get your keyboard back in working order...

  • Right shift and c not working, Left shift and c works fine for a capital c

I have a Lenovo G560 laptop. Had this problem once before and computer tech fixed problem, but moved cities. Worked fine but recently had a windows update. Now when I press the right shift key and c nothing happens. Left shift and c displays a capital c. How do I restore the right shift c ?

    hi richiestac,
You can try to remap the Right Shift Key so that it will function as Left Shift using Sharpkeys.
    To do this:
    1. Download and install Sharpkeys
    2. Open Sharpkeys, click on Add and on the Map this key (From Key) , select the Right Shift key, then on the To this key (To key), select the Left Shift key.
      - Link to picture
    3. When finished, click Write to Registry and reboot.
As for the display driver installation, you need to uninstall first any signs of Intel HD Graphics from the Control Panel (Icon View) > Programs and Features. After that, open Device Manager > Display Adapters and uninstall the Intel Graphics (ensure you put a check on Delete the driver software for this device and try to re-install the Intel Onboard Graphics Driver.
Alternatively, you can skip all the procedures above and just press the OneKey Recovery button to restore the system to factory settings (note that all data will be wiped on the OS partition).
