X230 Lags When Connected To External Monitor
Hey guys,
I was wondering if you could help me out.
I just got a new Lenovo Thinkpad X230 with 8 GB RAM and an SSD drive. It works great.
Problem is, when I connect it to my dual 24" monitor set up, the CPU because to spike (anywhere from 40% to 100%) and running even Chrome alone becomes a very laggy experience. What should I do? Is this because the graphics card cannot handle two monitors? Please let me know. Thanks so much for your help in advance!
Yeah I am only running Chrome.. I think it might be a Chrome/Firefox issue? Not really sure what to do...
I connecting via DVI and VGA through a Mini Dock Series 3 for the X230

Grey screen when connected to external monitor / projector
I have a 13" Macbook Pro (OS 10.6.7, 2.4 GHz Intel, NVIDIA GeForce 320M) that is freezing up when connected to an external monitor or projector. The monitor or projector works fine when initially connected, but after an hour or so of use, both screens will suddenly turn grey or black and the computer is totally unresponsive (the sleep light is not on). I have to do a hard shut down using the power button. This problem only occures when connected to a monitor / projector.
This freeze up happens in various use cases; watching a movie, web surfing, editing docs, or even when i'm away from the computer, it seems entirely random.
I'm connecting to a Dell U2711 external monitor using a HDMI cable. I've tried 3 different HDMI cables / adaptors, so I'm pretty sure it's not the cable that's the problem. The problem also occures when connected to an Epson Powerlite HD 705 projector (again using HDMI)
I've called Applecare and run a Hardware Test (no issues found), I've also re-installed the operating system and ran all updates. The problem still occures.
Idea ideas on what's wrong?Found the solution here: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/152203/osx-10-10-yosmite-turn-off-macbo ok-pros-display-while-connect-to-external-moni
In terminal:
Enable: sudo nvram boot-args="niog=1"
To undo: sudo nvram -d boot-args
This works brilliantly!
Steps I use:
1) After putting in the terminal command, reboot and close the lid immediately
2) Keep the lid closed during boot up and once logged in, open the lid
3) The MacBook Pro's screen is off -
MacBook Pro is no longer working properly when connected to external monitor, help!
My macbookpro has started giving me blue screen issues when connected to my external monitor. It was working fine but now makes the computer unusable when connected. Using i-wire lead from thunderbolt to hdmi on monitor. Monitor works fine when connected to old HP notebook using HDMI lead so monitor not faulty. What has changed on my mac to cause this?
You can change your password to avoid the "L" and you can take your machine into Apple for a keyboard replacement, free under AppleCare/warranty.

[HELP] Erratic Trackpad When Connected To External Monitor
Hi guys, you've all managed to help me in the past so lets hope this time goes as smoothly
So today I purchased a Sharp LC-37XD1E as an external monitor for watching movies and playing games through my MacBook Pro, sadly although everything seems to be connecting nicely i'm having some major bugs with my trackpad and wired mouse.
For some reason when I try to move the cursor it fights against the moment almost as if it was on an elastic band, if I keep trying to move it then it start opening launch pad and switching to my other desktops, so far i've managed to find a small fix and that is if it starts bugging out and I press Esc it seems to resolve the problem for around 40 seconds before happening again.
The Mac is connected to the monitor through the mini DisplayPort on the Mac using a VGA cable connected to a miniDVI to VGA connector.
I know the monitor is an old model but so is my Mac and it's all I have to work with, here are the specs to help with your analysis of the possible issue.
Macbook Pro Unibody 15" Mid 2009
OSX: 10.9.5
Ram: 4GB
HDD: 500GB
Sharp AQUOS LC-37XD1E
Resolution: Tested all possible resolution options both optimized for Mac and for external monitor and experience issues on all.
Refresh Rate: 60HrtzFolks: *there may be a power/signal issue going on here.* I had a similar problem of my network connection dragging to practically nothing when hooking up my LaCie external drive to the USB port. Please see my post below (link and text)
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9914924#9914924
Folks:
Apple needs to get on this issue fast; after turning off my N mode on my WRT160N Linksys Router, I got my packet speed back up to where it should be... HOWEVER I noticed another problem.
When I hooked up my LaCie external drive (connected via USB), my packets on PING practically stall to nothing. I then eject the external USB drive and re-ping and I get acceptable packet speeds; I re-connect the LaCie external drive to the USB port and my PING crawls to nothing.
There is CLEARLY a correlation between the network speed crawling to nothing while hooking up an external drive; possibly a power sink and/or signal interference on the Airport when hooking up a USB device? (or perhaps even Firewire 800 too?)
I sure hope Apple is reading this one, because this could be a MAJOR issue that needs to be fixed ASAP. -
MacBook won't go to sleep when connected to external monitor
Dear all,
I have a MacBook connected to an external monitor via DVI to HDMI adapter. The MacBook is also connected to the power adapter and to an external aluminium Apple keyboard and a wired Mighty Mouse via USB. I use the computer with the lid closed. The problem is that, even though the system preferences are set to put the computer to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity, it won't go to sleep if it's connected to the external monitor, regardless of whether the monitor is on or off. Is this normal or is there a malfunction? If the latter, any ideas how to solve the problem?
Best regards,Hello again, JasonFear,
Thank you for your help and I apologise for not having reply earlier, but I was trying and checking your suggestions. What I have done is safe booting my MacBook, and the problem disappeared, so I started tinkering with the login and the preferences. In the end, I replaced the preferences folder using a month-old version in Time Machine. And now, I don't know if my original problem was not external-monitor related or it is just that I have a different problem because, at the moment, the problem is like this:
My MacBook refuses to go to sleep by itself when iTunes (version 9.0.3)is open. However, I can make it go to sleep using the Apple menu, the keyboard or the remote control (pressing and holding the play button).
It doesn't matter if it's connected or not to the external monitor.
I've checked this page
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
but the solution is not there. When iTunes is open, I make sure there is nothing playing or downloading (no song, no podcast). iTunes checks for new episodes of podcasts every hour, and the computer is set to go to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity.
Any ideas?
Best regards,

MBP logs out randomly when connected to external monitor.
My early 2011 MBP laptop (OS Yosemite 10.2.2) recently started logging itself out. I narrowed the problem to the external monitor which is connected with a Thunderbolt adapter. I installed Thunderbolt firmware update 1.2, that did not correct the problem. When I disconnect the external monitor, the problem went away. Is there something I can do to be able to use the external monitor again?
I know that both displays will turn blue when it is connected, but it turns blue and comes back after the display is connected. It will become blue during a Keynote presentation, while Front Row is on, and while nothing is happening. It doesn't matter if it has been connected for five minutes or two hours, they both change to blue screens and happen very often and in no particular time interval.

Garbled display at startup when connecting to External Monitor - MBP Early 2011.
Hi,
When i connect my Early 2011 MBP to an external display i get a garbled display at startup.
I then have to disconnect the hdmi cable to the external monitor, after which the display clears up (on the laptop) and then when i reconnect the external monitor, it works fine. The problem with this process is that i have to do it each time i start/boot my laptop with the external display connected. The display mode is currently set to mirror displays if that helps.
Would appreciate any advice users with this kind of set up can provide. Thank you in advance.Welcome!!
It could be that you are using the external in "mirrored mode" with the res set above the max res for the MBP screen. On my Late 2007 MBP, the F7 key toggles between mirrored mode and "spanning" (or "extended desktop") mode and System preferences will let you set the two displays independently. I use an external monitor in spanning mode and have not experienced a problem as I have the internal display prefs set to a comfortable res for its hardware. -

Macbook Pro Late 2012 Lagging when connected to external display (1GB Graphics Card)
I have a brand new Macbook Pro 15'' running 10.8.3 with 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M Graphics Card. I've been using the laptop conected to my Panasonic 720p TV for a while now and suddenly everything started lagging, the dock lagged, the lauchpad also. I have erased programs, music and everything left in my computer. Im running normally on 27% of the RAM memory (8gb) and have a capacity of 500+ GB left in the HDD. Please Advise...
Hi there Chiefinho,
You may find the troubleshooting steps toward the bottom of the article below helpful. Please keep in mind, diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you would like to avoid this process, or do not know how to perform any of the following steps, consider bringing the Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance. Be sure to ask that, if the drive needs reformatting or replacing, they contact you about escalating your case to a special data recovery service. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).

Possible to connect an external monitor to HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
I have a HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC model # A1M02AV and it has a VGA port, one that looks like a phone/broadband cable port, and one that looks like a USB port but indented on either side at the bottom. Can I even connect an external monitor? How do I find out if I have more than 1 video card? Besides the usual USB/headphone ports, I don't have any other ports. It says my drivers are up to date...but I don't even know what I should be looking for. Do I need to install something or buy some sort of adapter?
I am trying to connect a Dell external montitor via the VGA port with a VGA cable. The monitor has power but my notebook does not recognize/detect it. However, when I first plugged it in, my notebook display shrank into a square (vs the whole screen) so it recognized something...but nothing happened on the external monitor.
I tried detecting it via my display settings, but I accidentally changed some dispaly setting so that the home desktop only shows on monitor 1, but unselected my actual notebook display or something or changed it to be monitor 2 (even though monitor 1 does not exist), so when I plug the cable in to my notebook, all of a sudden my desktop goes away and it's a just a blank background screen - and I cannot access the computer display settings or anything.... when the cable is unplugged this setting looks normal, so I can't figure out how to fix it.
Sorry, I have no idea what I'm doing here - please help!
This question was solved.
View Solution.Hi,
All Dell monitors come with CD's for drivers. Your laptop may not know the monitor w/o its driver, it won't install automatically. Please check:
Ringht click a blank space on desktop,
Click Personalize
Click Display
Click Change display settings
Can you see BOTH laptop screen and external monitor in there as shown on the following image:
For testing, I put my Dell monitor is my main display. If I can't see 2 monitor, you need its driver first and then check the cable.
Regards.

Yes. You can mirror or extend as been so for many years.
2. Which solution is the best to connect 2 external monitors to my MBP 13 2011 i5 ?
None, the graphics card is poor integrated graphics and it can barely drive one external monitor, much less two.
If you wanted two external monitors the machine to get is the Mac Pro. -
When connected to lg monitor with hdmi cable i get no sound
when connected to lg monitor with hdmi cable i get no sound
The issue here is that HDMI cables, as the name indicates, carry audio signals to the monitor. Therefore if the monitor has no built in speakers then there will be no sound. If you have external speakers you can plug them into the audio out slot on the back of the monitor and the problem will be solved.
However, if the screen does have built in speakers you need to go Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Manage Audio Devices and set either your headphone jack or the screen to be the default device. And then you ca pick which device the sound will play from. Either yourlaptop speakers or whateer speakers are plugged into the laptop or the Monitor and whatever speakers are plugged into the monitor -
Trayer does not Adjust correctly when Switching to External Monitor
Hello
I use a laptop with xmonad and xmobar and trayer. When i connect my external monitor via VGA, i set it to primary. My xmobar moves perfectly to the top of my external monitor, with a width of 90% of the screen, as specified in my xmobarrc. However, trayer acts differently. It does move to my external monitor, however, its position overlaps with xmobar, and does not move correctly to the remaining 10% of the screen left by xmobar which i would like trayer to occupy.
How can i make trayer move correctly?
Thank you!
Last edited by fawkes5 (2013-01-09 19:10:51)Hello again. If i start my external monitor when i startx (i.e through .xinitrc) then it sets correctly. So its just the dyanmic changing of resolution that trayer has trouble adjusting with.

Difficulty connecting my external monitor to my macbook.
I'm having difficulty connecting my external monitor (Acer) to my macbook.
At first, It worked fine. Then, about 2ish months later, it stopped working.
Now, when I hook the external monitor up both monitors start flashing a blue screen.
I thought it was because my adapter broke but I bought a new one and the problem still persisted.
I hooked the external monitor up to a pc laptop and it worked just fine.
Any suggestions????????What Macbook Pro do you have? Does it have an HDMI port? Does it have a minidisplay port? If it has an HDMI port get an HDMI cable. If it has a Mini display port get a mini display port to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable.
Does ypour monitor have other than an HDMI port such as a DVI port?
