[X230] Screen issues (black bars)

Hi,
I've got a X230 with an IPS screen since 1,5 years, and I currently have some issues with it.
Sometimes, the bottom left of the screen blink and black bars appears, along with some square brightness shapes.
I'm pretty bad to description, so here an album of the problem : http://imgur.com/a/qIwj5#0 (it's more clear if you zoom).

This is a detail of the bottom left :

Again, this appear sometimes only, and a knock in the screen resolve the problem, but it's worrying.
Does someone has already have this kind of problems ?
Thanks for your responses !

Hi,
Connect the system to an external monitor and check if it displays correctly. If it does, probably your LCD panel/invertor/cable had gone faulty. If it comes out the same way on the external monitor, you're looking at motherboard repair/replacement.

Did you try restart the Mac?

  • Expand to full screen display- Black bars

I have an Apple Cinema display. I have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.
I think it has to do with the aspect ration so the screen if filled.
I tried the System Prefs, but that didn't work.
I know it's an easy fix, but I don't recall how I did it before.
Something changed when I started up this morning.

Sorry for intruding in this thread.   I just saw your question in the Aperture Forum.
    Quick Previews On (Adjustment Disabled)
I've tried to Import photos that I took yesterday.
Each time I get the message when I try to tune up the new photos.
The message in a greyed out box is: Quick Preview On (Adjustment Disabled)
There has to be a setting that I've missed, but on every try, I get the message and can not post process my images.
    Help !
Unfortunately, the moderators removed it before I could answer. You mentioned a new operating system version, that must not be named.
It is really simple: Quick Preview is a mode for quickly browsing, and it disables the Adjustments.
Click the button with the hurried looking rectangle to turn it off again:
Or simply press the keyboard shortcut "P" to toggle between Quick preview Mode and normal mode.

  • Screen Has Black bars (Malware?)

When I turn on my iMac the apple logo appears behind what looks like jail bars then a dark shade rolls down the screen then tiny squares appear all over screen with error message to restart if it fails to restart manually, which it does. Cannot get past this point. Any suggestions. Tried command R to no avail.

Try a Safe Boot (restart holding down the shift key until the grey progress bar appears).
Hopefully it will Safe Boot and allow you to copy the contents of the panic log and post it on here, where someone may be able to offer some tips as to what could be causing the KP. The log should be located here: /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports
Once you've done this try restarting as normal from the Apple menu.

  • Screen Issue -- black streaks... almost as if the screen is only half off

My phone occasionally has black, vertical streaks on it. It almost looks like the screen doesn't fully shut off. When the phone is off, normally, the screen will be grayish in color. When the phone is on the screen background will be black. When my phone is put on standby the screen will look like a combination of both, at times. Does anyone else have problems like this? Is it normal? I can't reproduce it when I want to. It's just a random thing that happens every now and then. I've only had my phone for about 5 days now.

This happens to me quite frequently as well. At least once a day.
After the phone has gone into stand-by mode, the screen will sometimes turn back on.
I tried to photograph this, but it is very, very difficult, as it is as you said, just black streaks with no back lighting.
I bet many people have it without noticing it, because you have to look carefully to see it.
I also bet it drains batteries.

  • Black bars when AirPlay Mirroring

I have an LH 55" TV that I've connected my 3rd Gen AppleTV to via HDMI. I have the resolution set at "Auto" which sets it to full 1080p - 60hz. When I view anything on the AppleTV it takes up the full screen real estate. However, when I mirror almost anything other than a video, I get black bars around the edges. This is wasted space.
It makes sense if there were black bars on the right and left because of the mismatched resolution. However, there are bars at the top and bottom too.
I have searched numerous forums and found nothing on this.
I am using an iPad 2.
    Any ideas?
    Apple, please fix this issue.

mikecreates, did you find the solution to your problem? I know exactly what you are talking about because I have the exact same issue as yours.
I have a newly purchased LG 47" LCD. I connected both my new ipad and the AppleTV (3rd generaion) to the same router, when viewing AppleTV everything looks fine and full screen, but when mirroring the ipad on the HDTV I'd get the black bars around the TV screen (top/bottom/left and right) when running apps, viewing photos, checking emails, etc. The only exception is mirroring a movie in which case it shows full screen on the TV.
I found a way to get around this by changing the Aspect Ratio to Cinema Zoom 3 on my LG HDTV, then the ipad mirroring looks normal on the TV screen (no black bars on top/bottom screen), but doing this will cause the video to be overscan and out of proportion on the TV. So this is really not an ideal solution since I'll have to switch the aspect ratio back and forth when doing different things (running apps or watching movies) in order to make the mirroring look full screen on the HDTV.
Did anyone know the proper fix?

  • How to remove black bars after image rotation

I am very new to using premiere pro. I took a video with my smartphone as the content for a project.  The original dimentions was 1280 wide and 720high.  I imported the video and needed to rotate it 90 degrees.   Instead of wide, I need it tall. I imported and then went under effects control - motion - rotation to rotate how I wanted.
But now on the screen has black bars on the sides since rotating it, and when I export the basic video settings is greyed out, so I can't change it. It is set/fixed at 1280 x 720 with the black bars.
How can I remove the side black bars in premiere pro to fit the dimensions of the newly rotated video?

You need to create a new sequence with the settings at 720X1280 and put your video on that sequence. It requires you to use the custom settings so make sure everything matches.
To export it after you edit it, choose a 720p format and unlock the Width and Height so you can manually set the image to 720X1280.  That should work for you.
To make sure I wasn't steering you wrong, I just shot a vertical video, imported it into a 720X1280 custom sequence, put a title on it and exported it using an Android preset, unlocked the settings and swapped the width and the height. I then emailed it to my phone and played it. Worked great.  It also plays OK in Windows Media Player. It is funny to see it that way on a PC, but I can think of a few reasons that I might be inclined to shoot that way. Specifically if I was going to play it on a portrait oriented display.

  • 2008 Pro has flashes of black bar at bottom of screen

I'm getting flash of a black bar the full width of screen and height of dock at the very bottom of the screen.
It flashes quickly twice about every 10 seconds.
I just got the box last night.
    It has an 8800GT card.
Didn't notice it last night, but left in on all night to format a hard drive with multiple passes.
I've rebooted and the condition persists.

Think I have a clue. I have two monitors connected to the 8800GT.
I had the card set to 'mirror mode' and I had my 2nd monitor turned off as I was attempting to clone my main hard drive, no need to burn the electricity.
When I turned on the 2nd monitor, the menu bar appeared 1/4 way down the screen, so the hole screen was pushed down by 1/4 and there was some garbage at the top of the screen.
I took it out of mirror mode with both monitors turned on, and the problem went away (I may have also rebooted).
    Some driver issue with 8800GT.

  • 720p over HDMI - black bar issues

    Hi all.
I've got a 1st gen V-box, which worked great until about 9 months ago.  I had been happily using 720p over HDMI for about a year.  However, I suspect a software "update" around this time caused problems, as the 720p and 1080i settings are now incredibly unreliable.
Specifically, when I set the box to show HD resolutions, there are usually black bars down the left and right of the screen, cutting off those sides of the picture.  Sometimes the picture displays properly, but this is usually only temporary - after a day or two of thinking everything's sorted, the dreaded black bars reappear when starting the box up for the first time that day.  Rebooting doesn't seem to help.  The bars even overlay the menus, so it seems to be affecting everything not just live tv.  The full picture is shown when I use standard def over HDMI however.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so any ideas how to fix?

    Hello
On most platforms, I've experienced black bars at the sides, noteably lower bandwidth channels such as kids or shopping often display what you describe when using any HDMI setting in my experience.
Thre is the ability to hit the shortcuts button on the bottom right of the remote which allows you to scroll through to then stretch the image if you wish- but It doesn't always work, I'll stress again this also happens on my FREESAT box, so I don't think it's an issue generic to Vision.
    Couple of questions though,
1: Is it a Toshiba tv? (some firmware upgrades to these sets have caused numerous issues and lip synching problems.
2: have you tried a different HDMI cable? (apologies if that's blatantly obvious!)
I've not tested V.1.5 black box yet to see how this issue is there (note I don't call it a V2 box- as it's **bleep**).
Hopefully, if the rumours are true the development team will scrutinise the forums, realise these issues do indeed exist and can work towards a solution in the Freeview HD offering of whatever comes out next:

  • There is black bar in the middle of my screen.

There is black bar in the middle of my screen. I have a Macbookair, 2011. I was writing in word when it happend.
I have restarted the machine, its still there, done a hardware test, nothing is wrong. What should I do

If the black bar appears immediately upon booting (at the grey screen) then I'd suspect you have a hardware failure of part of the screen.
An external monitor could help confirm that it's not a software issue where OSX *thinks* there should be a black bar there :-) .  If you hook up an external monitor and have OSX set to mirror the displays (which I believe is the default setting for a new monitor) see if the black bar is also on the external monitor.  If it's not, I think you need a new screen for the Air.

  • Chrome shows a black bar at the top of the screen?

Hi, I have been using Chrome on my PC for ages and never had an issue with it, but I've noticed on my iMac that it has this black bar at the top of the screen (see screenshot). It makes it impossible to see the top and bottom of websites because the bar blocks them out.
Anyone else having this problem/know how to fix it?
    Thanks!

Completely uninstall ALL Google software per the instructions on Google's website. Currently, all Google apps, especially Chrome and Drive  are not playing well and are NOT 100% compatible/compliant with OS X Mavericks. Until Google releases a fix or update for OS X Mavericks, completely uninstall all Google apps.
I been seeing more recent posts about users having issues with  both Mavericks and Google Chrome.
If you do not like Apple's Safari Web browser, as an alternative, try using Mozilla FireFox. Mozilla constantly updates FireFox and just released a new update recently and FireFox is much more stable on OS X Mavericks.

  • Black bar showing up at bottom of screen during the editing?

When I add some video for editing to Adobe Premiere, it is fine for a while, after some seconds (when there is a gap between two videos) video moves up a bit and a black bar shows on the bottom of the video. How do I remove this? Thanks for the answers in advance.

When Premiere is acting weird, restart computer, open Premiere while holding down shift+alt until welcome screen.
    Then clean out media cache.
See if the will resolve the issue.

  • Black bar along the right side and the bottom of the screen- DV5-1007ca

I have DV5 1007ca running Vista Home Premium 32-bit.My computer seems to suddenly think my monitor is a different size. I have a 3-inch black bar down the right side of the screen and about a 1/4 inch black bar along the bottom. My windows are still fully functional and completely fill the portion of the screen that is active. There is no loss of image, it's just framed by the black bars. If I do a Print screen and paste it into a document, the black bars are not there. It's as if the computer thinks the screen is a different physical size. This situation is present all the time, even when starting up. This is what I have done so far: -adjusted screen resolution settings = no change-rolled back my display drivers = no change-re-updated my display drivers = no change-rolled back my BIOS = no change-re-updated my BIOS = no change-System recovery = no change I searched posts here and elsewhere but the results were inconclusive. A couple of posters reported a virtually identical problem and were told they needed to replace either their screens or their graphics cards. Unfortunately, none of those posters ever reported back so it was unclear whether or not the issue was resolved. I doubt it is the screen since screen problem symptoms usually involve bits of screen not working and parts of the display being lost. My screen seems to be working fine, it just thinks it's smaller than it is. The graphics card is highly suspect. What's funny is that a little while ago, I started up my computer without changing anything and all was well for about a week and then it went back to the same old issue. Any helpful advice would be appreciated. This issue is driving me nuts!

I found a real solution that is hardware related. I was given a laptop with this exact same problem for free since my friend thought it wasn't worth paying to repair a 3 year old laptop, and was dead for almost a year (I think they manufactured these in 2008, but HP has almost no specs or info about them, specially ours; DV5T-1100) I have the solution to this problem, and is a solution not found almost anywhere using Google, and HP support doesn't want to tell you, simply don't know, or would make them look bad. I was able to fix it myself by using a rework station (basically a dedicated hot air gun) that I used to "reflow" the graphics chipset's connection to the board (keep reading, because this method may vary on result details). This simply means that I opened the laptop, removed the copper heatsink connected to the fan to expose both the micro-processor, and the faulty graphics chipset, and started cutting  soda cans, or thick tin foil to cover the areas AROUND the graphics chipset, and leave the graphics chipset exposed so that the really hot air would concentrate only on TOP of the graphics chipset. Then, I put the device on 220 degress, with the tip of the gun 2 inches over the chipset, and circled the gun around heating that sucker for 5 minutes, then I did a 3 minute rest to cool off, and a final 5 minutes reheat again. Luckily enough it WORKED!, and it has been working for almost 10 months with heavy use. HOWEVER... doing a "reflow" like this on a micro component isn't reallt a proper fix. Sure you may get lucky, and I read of instances where the fix lasted for years, but also just months. This is because the problem is the old solder that connects each "ball" point under the chip to the motherboard may have a micro ultra tiny imperfections and misconnections on a few or many of the connected points cause by a long period of overheat of the chip due to both, a very bad heatsink, and heatflow of heat inside the laptop, and also (and usually) really bad maintenance on the user's part by having a really dirty and dusty vents, overuse, and blocking the ventilation exhaust of the laptop itself over time. A proper fix of this chip issue is another process called "reballing", where they actually properly overheat that particular chipset so much using IR heat, and an expensive machine, to "loosen" the solder of all connections and remove the chip itself to both, clean the old solder on the chip, and the old solder left on the motherboard, and actually REPLACE all solder with new lead solder. However, this process has to be very precise (hence the machine), and it maybe costly, and there's also the fact that MANY scammers out there either never really do a true reballing, ans just do a reflow to scam you, or don't have the experience to do a proper reball of the chip. So whose at fault here? Uneducated users that neglect learning how to properly maintain a laptop off its main enemies (dust and heat) no matter how good the hardware heatsinks may be, or is it poor hardware design by the manufacturer, where other brands or even other families of series off the same brand have actually better noticeable hardware design than these DV series that are so notorious to overheat easier than others out there? Well, I don't know, but I do know that you should be VERY careful having these laptops repaired and be scammed, because hey! Even so called "refurbished" or even so called "brand new" entire motherboard out there on Ebay are just bad reflow jobs with little to no warranty on them on purpose, to only last a few months on purpose. So, watch out, and THINK! before spending money on a beat up poor donkey.

  • IPod boots to black bar on screen, nothing else

I got back from the gym a few hours ago and went to plug my IPod (video) in to charge. Now when I boot it, the apple logo appears for a split-second, then disappears and a black bar covers the lower third of the screen. It doesnt show up on the computer at all when i plug in the USB. When I do the 'hold menu+select' trick to reset it, the same thing happens (apple logo then black bar), and I can't restore it because it doesnt show up on the computer. Is there anything I can do, or do I have a new, very expensive paperweight?

This is almost certainly an issue that requires service.

  • FaceTime has black bar on screen before call

When I launch FaceTime on my iPad 4 (retina), I get almost half the screen in portrait mode as a black bar. When I place the call, the screen is fine. This did not happen with iOS 7. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks Bob for this, it has focused my efforts. It seems to be a bit 'random' to say the least, and my nearest Apple Store is a 100 mile round trip to get to. This is very much an iOS 8 issue, but it seems that dear old Yosemite has a problem as well which wasn't helping my diagnosis (no audio when call is initiated). I shall take my iPad in to my "local" store and see what the resident Geniuses make of it.
Once again, thanks for your input - as a developer it gets a bit lonely here, but when problems surface, it can become alarming!
