X230 - WiDi broken in Windows 8.1

I have an X230. Windows 8.1 x64. All drivers are up to date.
When I try to add a Widi device through the Windows Devices tab, it never sees any devices. Same if I go through "Devices -> Project -> Add a Device"
I think this may be related: the service "Wireless Pan DHCP Server" will not start in services.msc. I have gone as far as to revert to Windows 8, let it update to 8.1, take all updates again, and trying to add a device. Still nothing.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Note: this worked fine in Windows 8 with the WiDi application that Intel has now screpped for the 8.1 integration.

Can anyone confirm that WiDi is working for them in Windows 8.1 x64 on an x230?

Taskkill /F broken in windows 8 when applied to a process that crashes on exiting

It appears that Windows 8 has broken the taskkill command in part at least (actually, I think it is more likely a broken ability to set the debug attribute, which in prior Windows versions allowed taskkill to kill programs even if in a different security
context; but I don't know exactly how to test that or prove my hypothesis). When attempting to kill a process that is hung on exit (e.g., attempted a normal exit from the program, but it hangs and fails to exit, and continues to consume system resources),
there appears to be no way to terminate the application/service, and an "access denied" error is generated even though run from the administrator command prompt.
I have had this happen now many times with chrome.exe (which seems to have lots of issues with Windows 8 in general, but especially when exiting), as well as Skype.exe (a perpetual problem child program under any system). It is repeatable if you can
get any program to crash/hang on exit:
(1) start a bunch of chrome.exe windows, especially ones that require resources like scripts, and then attempt to exit chrome window by window - this will cause chrome to crash on exit 5/10 times. Confirm hung process via ctr-shift-esc and see
that at least one chrome task is still running (chrome window may or may not still be visible)
(2) From the administrator command line: "taskkill /IM chrome /F" which will give the access denied error.
(3) psutils is also unsuccessful: pskill chrome /F also gives same error (run from administrator command prompt)
As I understand prior Windows releases, there is a debug attribute that was set by these particular utilities (under Windows 7 and earlier) which allowed taskkill and pskill to kill processes even when the task manager failed to do so. It seems
that something is broken under Windows 8 now in that regard.
Any ideas how to fix? is there a registry fix? Another utility that works under Windows 8?

The problem is with killing certain "runaway" processes. I can kill chrome just fine ... until it crashes! Once it crashes, it is unkillable. Something is not right.

Newsletter is too wide for Mail window

I receive a monthly email newsletter. It is hard to read because the text is wider than the window, necessitating constant left and right scrolling. I had the same problem before I changed monitors. Some other Mac users are writing in to the editor with the same problem, but noone who uses Windows has complained so far.

You can resize the picture on the display by pinching your fingers on the trackpad of the MacBook Pro. Pinching makes the picture smaller and you an make it fit into the window so you don't have to scroll. If you want to make the picture bigger, you move your thumb and index finger apart, the opposite of pinching.
I just posted this as a problem i'm hoping someone can help with. I can resize the picture by pinching, but i don't want to have to keep resizing every time i go to a website. i want Safari to automatically have the picture fit the window so that information is not cut off, requiring either resizing or scrolling. I didn't used to have this problem.

X230 usb broken, won't boot

got the x230 thinkpad, and boy is it a fail.
bios doesn't detect a usb cd/dvd drive (which i can use to boot other systems without any issues) so installing a operating system is a no-go (using installation cds/dvds like nearly everybody on this planet).
before attempting putting on linux i managed (over the workaround of a broken old hdd enduring the click-of-death) to install windows 7 on the thinkpad and the fun doesn't stop.
if i have the cd drive plugged in while starting the thinkpad it's not recognized in bios and also windows in not recognizing it. unplugging and replugging doesn't help. a restart doesn't help either. BUT a proper shutdown, then startup WITHOUT the cd drive plugged in and then, once windows is started, pluggin it it, it gets recognized every time and is completely usable (sadly bios doesn't start recognizing it if i now restart).
those useless morons at support as the hairless monkeys that they are of course tell me "well **bleep** you sir, we don't support booting our systems, only fingers of lenovo-employees may use the power button" (usb-cd is not a lenovo product).
i have "secure boot" disabled of course, tried the drive in the 2.0 and 3.0 usb ports, tried ahci and compatibility for sata, all to no avail.
seems like i have kicked over a 1000 euro into the trash :-(
anyone got a solution for me? (setting up a PXE boot server for each and every OS i want to install is sooo much work considering I JUST WANT TO **bleep**IN BOOT THIS PIECE OF **bleep**).
a way of replacing the usb (as in UNIVERSAL serial bus) firmware on the mainboard?
throw the thinkpad away until maybe coreboot or the like might be supported?
help????

IPhoto broken - Empty window when I open the application - Help needed

Hi Guys,
Since my upgrade to Snow Leopard my iPhoto 09 has been completely broken. What I get when I start it up is an empty window. No pictures on the right pane and no menus on the left pane. I read many threads about iPhoto issues, and so I have tried to rebuild the library, reinstall iPhoto from the disk I got with my mac. Still the same problem: On startup, iPhoto opens with a completely blank window. All I have are the three buttons at the bottom left side of the window (+, info and enlarge). Only if I click "+" to add a new album the menus on the left pane (events, photos...) appear. A few clicks on these menus and iPhoto crashes. All this, done with a new, clean library. I moved the old one, and keep it for the day I'll get iPhoto to work again. Hope you guys can help. This is painfully frustrating.

I am using Suitcase Fusion 2 and just activitating Helvetica Neue in Suitcase seemed to fix this problem I have had for several months.
I highly recommend doing the activation in Suitcase instead of just droping it into the System Fonts folder. This will allow for Suitcase to activate or deactivate the font. If you put the font into one of your folders, Suitcase can not deactivate, which might be necessary if your job uses a different version of Helvetica Neue.

Wide area bonjour - windows dns

Hi,
I have been trying to setup wide area bonjour using ms dns server for serveral days and come up against a dead end. In most examples on the internet BIND is used as the DNS server and all configuration is shown for BIND (except one PDF "www.grouplogic.com/Knowledge/PDFUpload/.../WanBonjour_1.pdf" which has examples for MS dns but it doesnt work).
So I have managed to configure the MS dns server as far as advertising available services but when I try to resolve a service it fails. I think its a problem with the srv record but have tried so many different configurations for this record I have lost count. config below.
Has any one set this up? could really do with a good example of it working on windows dns.

Media Skins broken in Windows QT

I have a neat media skin I built. Works great on QT 6 or 7 on the Mac.
On windows, I have noticed two bugs.
1) Click on the drag region and the player forground jumps and loses the correct mapping betwen the drag and foreground region.
2) the button images have a white pixel area neat the right hand side / and or are not aligned right after the above #1 occurs.
3) The repaint of the video window if you drag the media player leaves garbage (old pixels) on occasion
All in all, it makes skins unusable for Windows.... Hopefully it will be fixed quickly...as of 7.0.4 it's broken, I may have to go to WMP (yuck) to deliver functionality on windows if this is not addressed...
has anbody seen this?

ITunes COM SDK broken on Windows XP??

I have an application called TuneUp Companion (http://www.tuneupmedia.com) that was working fine with iTunes 7.7 and after upgrading is broken.
It works fine on Windows Vista ...but iTunes 8 on Windows XP seems to give a message back that the iTunes COM interface is not available.
Are there known issues with the iTunes COM SDK for Windows (7/15/08 release) on Windows XP??

much of this is speculation because I can't remember how many previous versions of iTunes were on these machines...but this is what we're seeing:
extra entries in two registry keys... when it didn't work these two registry entries contained "AppID" values:

Digital Filing broken with windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2?

Recently upgraded my machines so now I have Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 running. The scanning from my Officejet L7680 to a network share on one of these machines is no longer working.
Looking into it with network monitors I can see that the login of the user and password is working but then the save of the file on the share gives and error.
In windows 8.1 it starts creating the file but cannot add content to it (so the file is 0 Bytes in size) on Server 2012 R2 the creation of the file already gives and error.
Searching around the web seems to indicate that changes in the SMB protocol on the latest windows versions are the cause of this and other MFP suppliers are providing firmware updates to fix this. There seems no way to fix this at the Windows side.
Can HP confirm this issue and indicate which all in ones will be able to connect to network shares on these latest windows version ? With or without a firmware update.

I can confirm that I'm experiencing the same issue on my Windows 8.1 x64 machine and Windows 2012 R2 Essentials. Will there ever be a firmware update for the L7680 printer so we can get this functionality working again?

Boot devices broken after Windows 8.1 installation

Hey guys, I work for an IT company and am having some troubles after installing Windows 8.1. I run an enterprise copy provided from my company, so I couldn't do the update, and used an ISO to perform the update manually.
After the update, I'm no longer able to boot to anything besides the Windows Boot Manager. This includes all CDs, DVDs, and USB devices. I also can't boot to my Linux installation, but that was expected to break during the upgrade.
I have a computer with UEFI, I've disabled fast boot and secure boot. I've tried setting my bios boot to UEFI (which should work with GPT disks created with applications like rufus) CSM, and UEFI and CSM. When I try CSM, I don't have any boot options and
my computer gives me an error about trying all boot options and failing.
At this point, I can't boot to a USB CDROM, or any of my live USB disks. I have created both legacy boot disks and UEFI boot disks to no avail. I have tried resetting my BIOS to factory defaults.
Advanced startup settings doesn't give me an option to boot from a device any more like it used to either, so that's out of the question. I can't even wipe my PC and start again because I can't boot to anything besides Windows 8.1.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

Also, booting to recovery doesn't work. I have a recovery disk that I created, but I can't use it because I can't boot to recovery (on Samsung, F4 at boot) to apply the image.

In Windows 8.1, you need to use the tools available inside Windows 8.1 to boot to a DVD or USB drive.
Please open PC settings and click Update & Recovery, and choose Advanced Startup option.

We use the msiexec /fvomus procedure as detailed in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa367575(v=vs.85).aspx for updating our product. We recently started getting feedback from clients that our application wasn't updating properly. After investigating
we've discovered that kb2918614 is to blame.
After this patch doing a msiexec /fvomus results in a UAC prompt which has to be clicked by the user. We do our updates using quiet mode however, and if the /q flag is used the install just fails silently.

Firefox Flash hardware acceleration broken in Windows 8 for AMD 4870

I've been having performance issues with Flash in Firefox on Windows 8 ever since I installed it, so I decided to try and get to the bottom of the issue, since Chrome's Pepper Flash plugin works flawlessly on the same machine. I decided to install Windows 7 as a dual-boot environment to do some testing, and installed the same version of Firefox (21), with all the same extensions, the same version of Flash (11.7) and the same display driver (Catalyst 13.1 Legacy). I was surprised to find that the performance issues I'd been having in Windows 8 were completely gone.
On closer inspection, that seems to be because the 'Use hardware acceleraton' checkbox is doing nothing in Windows 8. Whether it's checked or not, playing a beefy Flash video (one of Giant Bomb's HD progressive streams) uses 35-40% CPU and is pretty choppy. The exact same video, delivered via the exact same software but under Windows 7 is entirely smooth and CPU usage is around 5-10% with the checkbox ticked, and comparable to Windows 8 with hardware acceleration turned off.
In another test, I compared videos on Youtube with the information box turned on. In Windows 7 it's showing as software video rendering and accelerated video decoding regularly, changing to accelerated for both in full screen. With the exact same setup on Windows 8, it shows software rendering and decoding no matter what, with the associated higher CPU use and poorer video performance. Incidentally, reverting to Flash 10.3 on Windows 8 completely fixes the problem. Hardware acceleration works as it should in all scenarios. It seems to just be the 11 series that's affected.
Is this a known issue at all, and is there any sort of fix planned? Or is there a way to fix it now? Any help would be appreciated.

open firefox and type about:config in the address bar and hit enter. Type “webgl” into the Filter box and then double click on the webgl.force-enabled option to change its value from false to true.
Problem solve...Radeon HD-7310 dont know for Nvidia but i assume it will work to.

10.4 is definitely broken for Windows

I am having the same problems with 10.4 - iTunes Stores won't open - no error it just goes to a blank page and when the iPhone sync starts it gets stuck on backing up and never goes any further - just sits there forever. I have emailed support, and although they say they will get back to you in 24 hours, they have not responded. They must know by now that there is a problem. One person said to uninstall Safari and then iTunes works, but they need to fix it.

for me i am running windows 7 32bit version and looked around through my firewall settings and managed to find the solution through my registry
here's the bottom line: open command prompt in administrator mode and type netsh winsock reset, it will reset and then restart pc your safari 5.1 will work.
to open command prompt
click start
type in search box cmd
right click
select run as administator
if a box comes up which says "do you want to allow the following program make changes to the computer?" select yes
you may need to put the admin password in ask your admin
command prompt will be open
this is just for people who do not know how to open command prompt i expect that you do

Safari XML parsing broken (Mac, Windows, & iPhone)

Safari (Mac, Windows, & iPhone), does not appear to properly support XML DOM parsing.
I am trying to write a javascript script to parse an XML file and display some of its contents in the HTML.
Perfect example that works for IE 6+, FF, Opera, but not Safari:
