[x230] wifi range
I have an X230 that is hooked up to a Thinkpad Mini dock and connected to dual monitors. The laptop sits with the screen lid closed on the docking station. I am connected to a wireless network in my house.
I have a 25 MBps Comcast connection. I have noticed that my download speeds range between 2.5 and 3 MBps when the lid is closed and about 18-20 MBPs when the lid is open. Is it because the wireless signals are being picked up from sensors that sit around the screen?
How do I fix this issue? I don't want to leave my lid open for obvious reasons (dust, accidental damage etc.).

Here are a few choices.
If there is room above the x220 try propping up the back. The closer to vertical the better the signal.
If you are close enough to the router run a cable.
Purchase an expresscard network card. Use it instead of the internal card.
Purchase a usb network plug and use instead of the internal card.
Purchase a wireless repeater to boost the wifi signal such as the D-Link DAP-1320 or similar.
Thats all I can think of.

IPad 2 WiFi Range Issues (but not issues with connectivity when in range)
Okay. I hate to start a new thread when there are bunches of threads on the iPad 2 having WiFi problems (particularly with 5Ghz networks and also related to 4.3). Nonetheless, I'm not seeing anyone talking about range in these forums.
Issue: iPad 2 WiFi range is not as far as iPad 1 (with no cover on either).
Alternative Explanation: iPad 2 has difficulty connecting to Airport Express or Time Capsule extended networks.
Devices: iPad 2 3g, iPad 1 3g (iOS 4.3), iPhone 3gs (iOS 4.3), iPhone (iOS 3.2x), iMac, MacBook Pros, etc.
Network Router: Simultaneous Dual-Band Airport Extreme (latest version) set up with 2.4, 5 ghz and Guest Networks (each with their own name).
Network Extender: Airport Express (latest version) extending the 2.4 ghz network
Network Extender 2: Time Capsule (original, single band) extending the 2.4 ghz network
Longer Description: iPad 2 connected without an issue to the 5 ghz network and the 2.4 ghz network when it was in the same room as the Aiport Extreme. Didn't have any issues maintaining that connection.
However, the iPad 2 doesn't work in any of the farther rooms and can't see the network. iPad 1 and iPhones have no issues (and typically show 1 or two bars). I believe they typically are connecting through the Airport Express (but it could be the Time Capsule).
Given that the iPad 2 isn't even seeing the networks, I'm guessing it's a range issue, but hoping it's not.
Anyone else seeing this? Any fixes?While it is possible that an Apple moderator (Apple host) could pass some information to an Apple development/support group, in practice this doesn't really seem to happen (at least often). I believe that the moderators are kept quite busy just administering the forums and keeping them under control (no spam, ads, abuse, etc.). I've never seen a post by an Apple host here or seen a technical correction to a post (and there is certainly a lot of incorrect information posted here).
Unfortunately, a lot of new posters here seem to think that they are talking directly to Apple and post bug reports, feature suggestions, complaints, etc. These would be much better submitted via the Apple feedback vehicle at http://www.apple.com/feedback. These are not anonymous, are directed to the appropriate product and provide an email contact for Apple to get back to the submittor if more detail is required. -

Well iOS 5 helps you sync with your computer wirelessly when connected to a power supply and on wifi.
iOS 4 should allow you to have automatic downloads from your account with iTunes rather than from your computer.
Just go to settings>store and turn on automatic downloads and it will do what you want whether it's plugged in or not as long as you're on wifi. -
Extend wifi range with 2 airport express
I currently have an airport express on my main floor for wifi, can I add another airport express on 2nd floor to extend the wifi range if both of them are connected to a wired ethernet switch?
Yes. If you are using AirPort Utility 6.x on a Mac or AirPort Utility on an iPhone or iPad, the setup is a breeze, and will take about 2 minutes.

You cannot extend wifi from a different brand router..
Only apple to apple.
But the apple router does not have to be the main router.. it can be in bridge.. as long as it is creating a wireless network it will work fine. -
I am considering the purchase of an ipad. Can anybody tell me how good the wifi range is, in particular comparison to the ipod touch 2g which for me only works in some parts of my house, especially annoying since my router is as far from the bedroom as you can get. Does anyone ahve both devices and can make a comparison - is the chip in the ipad bigger and better?

Z30 wifi range problem after upgrade to 10.3.1.1565
After upgrading on Z30 the OS from 10.2 to 10.3.1 I experience serious Wifi range problems. There is a room in our house where I had excellent wifi connection with 10.2 and now the Z30 does not find the router. Even the router SSID! If I go closer to the router, it connects (5-6 meters from the room where I tested). It is a quite new router, a Linksys EA6200 with the latest firmware. I rebooted the router. No result. I restarted Blackberry (switch on/off), no result. I deleted all wifi saved connection on phone and tried to reconnect. No result. I tried to make a soft reset (vol up/down buttons), no results. Dont understand, I made Over the Air (on wifi) OS update yesterday in the same room, same place. Now I dont see any router there altough the Android phone and the notebook gives 4 bar wifi there. Before OS Upgrade I made a full backup (everything) in the Blackberry Link, tried to restore to the earlier OS version, but the restore uploaded to the new OS the personal data and not the earlier OS System. How I could solve the Wifi problem or roll back to the earlier official version? I dont see possibility on phone. It's crazy to have a quite good business phone which is now unuseable for its original functions without normal wifi connectivity... I understand to advise hacking or restarting router, etc... but how about if I go to abroad? I cannot restart the router there... I need stable wifi or a stable operating system...
I have seen numerous posts on other forums about the degraded wifi performance on devices running 10.3.1.xxxx.
I definitely noticed a dropoff in signal strength when I went up to 10.3.1. I remedied it by putting in a better router, but I don't believe one should have to do that in order to maintain was was acceptable performance under a previous OS. 10.3.1 is supposed to be an upgrade after all.
I also notice a difference between Z10(STL100-1) and Z30(STA100-6) on 5GHz wifi : Z10 finds and connects with no problem, but Z30 does not find the network at all, even when right next to the router. I subsequently discovered that the router autoselects channel 149 on 5GHz, which the Z10 is happy with. For the Z30, I tried all other available 5GHz channels on the router in turn, and eventually found that Z30 will find and connect if the router is manually set to channel 48 only. A bit restrictive for a high-end device.
It has been postulated that the claimed improved battery life on 10.3.1 comes at the expense of compromised wifi performance. Could this be the case?

Help with puzzling wifi range problem on Macbook Pro
Hi There,
I am experiencing wifi range problems with my MacBook Pro (10.9.4).
Our wireless modem (Arris DG860) is located in the office, in the center of our home. The wifi bars register full on my Macbook and the internet works well in office.
When I move my Macbook to the lounge room, 6 steps away, my internet stops working despite wifi bars remaining full. We also have an Apple TV in the lounge room (I have airplay disconnected on Macbook). 15% of the time, I can somehow get the internet to work in the lounge room (sometimes just by disconnecting airplay),then it mysteriously stops- with wifi bars remaining full.
85% of time, the internet doesn't work at all in lounge room (still full wifi bars). Other rooms of the house that are similar distances away from modem experience the same problem. We did not experience this problem with our old Macbook pro (purchased in '09). With our old Mac we had same internet connection, modem and Apple TV.
The only place our current Macbook receives good internet connection is in the office.
We also have an iPad and two iPhone 4S'
Any suggestions anyone? TIAMost people who live in neighborhoods or apartments are not blessed with so few WiFi transmitters to contend with. There are no clear channels for most people, even assuming the user knows how to optimize their router, which most people don’t.
I would also explain that I am FCC licensed amateur radio operator K5ZN extra class. I know how radios work and how electromagnetic waves behave. Every diagnostic and symptom tells me there is some incompatibility between my MBPs radio and specifically the Comcast modem-router. In another discussion I gave some technical information about the problem which I spent several day diagnosing while using two different Comcast "Docsis 3" routers.
I have not seen this WiFi problem when using Airport or other standard routers like Linksys or Netgear. The OP didn’t say what router they are using. My suspicions tell me that Apple is moving in the direction of a very sensitive power-saving radio while ISPs are trying to blast the neighborhoods with powerful WiFi. The result is that my poor Macbook can’t get a good signal. -
How do I connect my new Iphone 5 to my Belkin wifi range extender?
I have upgraded to the Iphone 5 and now can not connect to my Belkin wifi range extender. When I go into wifi in the settings it is bringing it up, but when you click on it it does not give you the option to just put in the password. When you go into the details there is no IP address in there! It is connecting to the router downstairs, but this extender was to give me coverage in upstairs. What to do?!

ThanksThe netgear is not going to work very well.. and not at all unless it is universal wireless extender.. you cannot use WDS method.
If it does support universal wireless then make sure the airport uses a rational SMB compatible wireless name.. not an apple name which is 35 characters long with spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe.
So nice AE name.. AEwifi and actually while you are trying.. fruitlessly to do this.. use AE24ghz and AE5ghz (so different names on the different bands)
Assuming your AE is gen3 or greater.
You should also fix the wireless channel at least for 2.4ghz since the netgear is probably only going to repeat 2.4ghz so use channel 11, as a trial.
And use no wireless security as a test.. if that works.. then use WPA1 & 2.. as often old equipment using WPA2 is not compatible.
If it fails with simple name.. fixed channel and no security. Sorry it is not compatible at all.. it happens.
If your AE is G wireless or earlier model.. really the time has come for replacement.
If your Express is G wireless model it is not supported.. and is too old to bother with expect I guess if you want to run audio to a speaker.
You must use older 5.6 utility to do this.. so do you have a computer running older OS.. up to Mountain Lion it is easy to install with a bit of manipulation.. later is much harder .. or windows computer anywhere or available to you. -
Whenever I leave WiFi range, BIS completely cuts out until I turn off and back on the mobile network. How do I fix this issue? It's incredibly annoying. I shouldn't have to turn off WiFi before I leave the house, the phone should just know to switch to mobile data if there's no connection on WiFi.
Try deleting all your wifi connections then readding them, happened to me on a few different versions, turned out it was the wifi profiles when i originally went from os 5 to os 6 and restored the backup but then i deleted all the wifi connections and it seem ok

The two devices are connected together via an ethernet cable, from airport extreme (lan 1 port) to airport express to (wan port). Now from the airport utility what configuration I have to set to the airport express in order to extend my wifi range? Inside the wireless tab what i have to select in the network mode?
1. Create a wireless network (use same same wireless network name and pass work as the airport extreme)
2. Join a wireless network

Thank youYou are way overthinking this. The utility will literally configure everything for you automatically. All that you need to do is name the device and click Next during the setup.
You can use your Mac using Mountain Lion or an iPhone or iPad.

A universal may work but reliability tends to be poor..
You are much better using another airport .. extreme or express.. even a second hand older one.
Or do not use wireless bridge or repeater.. simply run ethernet or use EOP adapters to a second WAP run independently of the main router.. it is far more reliable and far faster solution .. wireless bridge/repeater will halve your wireless speed.
