X230 -Windows Explorer freezing - Windows 8.1 with Update

X230 Laptop, 8GB RAM, Intel Graphics 4000 series, SS180GB SSD.  Problem occurs with laptop in the Ultra Base Series 3 dock or out of it. - VGA or DisplayPort. Laptop came with Windows 7, was upgraded to Windows 8 and then Windows 8.1 and then the 8.1 update. Problem started when Windows 8.1 was initially installed.
When connected to an external Monitor (HP ZR2240W or a Dell 2412Mb) with either display port or VGA (VGA on Dell only), Windows Explorer will stop working, open programs will show not responding. Mouse still functional, and if cursor is placed in the "taskbar" area, you will get a blue spinning circle. A double click of the mouse in that area will generally cause a relaunch of Windows Explorer (screen area goes blue, then repopulates with the icons) and things will work fine for a number of program launchs or switching between programs, then the problem will occur again. This will happen up to 20+ times per day.
Laptop has the latest BIOS installed from Lenovo, Intel Graphics Driver 10.18.10.3621. Have tried three different keyboard and mouse options (Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, and a hard wired keyboard and mouse) and problem follows each. Today I reloaded Windows 8.1 with the most recent updates and problem continues.
I feel that it might be a graphics adapter (Intel 4000) problem. Only solution there is a motherboard replacement.
In multiple searches on the "net," I could not find anything that resembled this problem. Getting very frustrating.
TIA
Michael

Well, the monitor resolution change did not fix the problem -
Lenovo has so far replaced the SSD Drive and the System Board, both to no avail. Replacing the System Board cause Windows 8.1 to request me to activate and it will not recognize my Key. The System Board Serial Number is different and apparently both Microsoft and Lenovo key off that. Lenovo Updates do not work either - another trouble ticket started on these issues -
On the original problem, I did find in the System Log the following entry -

  • Your Client Does not Support Opening this list with Windows Explorer on Windows Server 2012 R2

I am trying to open a document library in Internet Explorer 11 on a Windows 2012 R2 server and I am receiving Your Client Does not Support Opening this list with Windows Explorer

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to open a document library with the Internet Explorer 11 on a Windows 2012 R2 server. But you received the following error message: Your client
does not support opening this list with Windows Explorer.
There can be multiple reasons for it.
So, I recommend you can check with the following steps:
Go to the “Server Manager” of “Administrative Tools” > Enable the “Desktop Experience” feature in your environment.
Go to the “Services” of “Administrative Tools” >
Ensure the “WebClient” service is started.
Ensure that your computer has supported Web browser.
Ensure that Internet Explorer is configured correctly to add
https://*.sharepoint.com to Local intranet site in the “Security Tab” of “Internet Options”.
    Ensure that
you have applied the latest updates on the system.

  • Windows 8 Freezes after last "Lenovo Settings Update" anytime the pointer goes to a corner

After the most recent "Lenovo Settings Update", my Windows 8 freezes for a few minutes (minimum of two) anytime the pointer hits one of the hot corners.  The system also freezes for a couple of minutes or less when certain apps are started or the mouse clicks on certain apps.  This is a repeatable error.  I can restore the system to the setpoint previous to the "Lenovo Settings Update" and everything works fine.  re-Install the update and the problem comes back.  The system also freezes for 5-10 seconds when an e-mail message comes in and the notification appears.  Also happens under other different circumstances but the worst is when the mouse pointer goes to any "Hot Corner".  I can reset the system to the last restore point and have everything work fine but anytime I go to "Lenovo Settings", it forces the update which then creates this problem.
Has anyone else seen this issue?  I have all the updates for Windows 8 and Lenovo installed including all new Bios updates that are published.  The model is  a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S320u (otherwise known as the "Twist". The error is repeatable in all screen modes, tablet modes and multiple monitor modes.
For now I will go back to the latest restore point but would like to see the issue resolved.
    Thanks.
    Bob

I had the exact same issue with the same computer (Thinkpad Twist)! Am very happy to have come accross this page through a web search.
After installing some updates through Lenovo Update App (because of a message that critical updates are available on the Lenovo Support App from Startscreen), my whole system would freeze for about two minutes when moving the cursor over any corner. This is very troublesome not only because it effectively disables the Windows 8 "hot corners" (which I didn't use much anyway, preferring to launch the tasks thus accessible differently), but mostly because it is necessary at times to access the corners, notably to close any document, webpage or other instance of any program that was open in full screen (which usually all of my docs/programs are, considering the Twist's small screensize...).
Afer reading rbagnall's post I first tried uninstalling updates through the Lenovo Update center. But there, once installed, updates don't seem to be removable. Why Lenovo? You can look at the list of installed updates but not make any change. Now I have followed rbagnall's advice and restored my computer with a restore point, sufficiently far back, as I didn't know exactly which update caused this. It worked! Not exactly pleasant, because I had to reinstall some programs and change some settings again, but the problem got resolved.
I went further and tried to see which update causes this by installing them one by one and seeing when the problem appears. The culprit seems to be "Display Mode Orientation Update for Windows 8". One needs to install the "Lenovo Power Management Driver" with it (which is actually listed under optional updates, whereas the Display Mode update is shown as a critical one, but the former is selected automatically when the later is chosen, and one cannot unselect it, a message appears then that it is necessary for the other update). So it could be that one as well (haven't checked whether installing it without the Display Mode update creates the same problem). In any case, once these are installed, the problem appears.
I have now restored my PC again to the restore point, and haven't installed any Lenovo update, not even the other critical one, as I don't know what it's for (Critical patch to fix TVSU UTS issue - I haven't had this issue, and any web entries on this I found dated back to 2009). In the optional updates there is also a BIOS update, which I had installed previously, but I don't know what it's for either. If there is anything terribly useful in either (or other optional updates), please tell me.
For now I have uninstalled the Lenovo Support Startscreen App (which seems to be more annoying than helpful), and will refrain from updating any Lenovo drivers from now, which seems to do more harm than good (everything was working fine before the update)...

  • Windows explorer + other windows applications crashing regularly at resume from sleep and hibernate

    Good evening,
I have a Thinkpad W510 (4319-29G) running Windows 7 Pro 64bit. The system is loaded with the latest software and drives from Lenovo including BIOS 6NET74WW (1.34), upgrade was done Dec 7th (windows update performed Dec 15th).
    The machine has
    - 8Gb RAM
    - nVidia Quadro FX880M, driver version is 8.17.12.5896, 7-9-2010 and video card BIOS is 70.16.5f.0.b
    - dual harddrives,
       - one Seagate Momentus XT 500Gb (ST95005620AS) FW rev SD23 in the main location with C: and some other partitions
       - one Hitatchi 320 Gb (HTS723232L9SA60) FW rev FC4ZC50B in the bay.

    - Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection, driver version 11.5.10.1030, 7-22-2010
Recently I have experienced crashes of multiple windows components at resume from sleep and hibernate.
It seems to happen when swithing location (from work to home) and thus switching from docking station with wired network connection to no dock and wireless network connection (dont know if this has any bearing but anyway).

It seems that a module "nview64.dll" is always the first application to crash. I suspect this has something with graphics to do.
I dont know if this event triggers the following crashes or if it is so that the display is initialized before the other programs.
After all crash diagnostic messages have been shown windows explorer restarts and also other applications restart but a lot of system tools in the system tray are gone so a cold start is needed to restore all tools again.
I really would appreciate any help and suggestions how to fix this really annoying issue.
    Thanks, Anton

It seems thats the only fix, its been fine since

  • Can't open PDF files from Windows Explorer on Windows 8.1

    Hello,
after I've upgraded to Windows 8.1, I can't open PDF files from Windows Explorer (directly double clicking the file). The AcroRd32.exe runs in the background (2x !) as I see the processes in task manager, but there is no user interface visible. I have Acrobat
Reader 11.0.06, the desktop version (not Metro). I tried uninstalling the Acrobat reader and installing it again but this didn't help. The only way to open PDF files is to close the AcroRd32.exe from the task manager, open empty Acrobat Reader from the desktop
and then drag&drop the PDF file over that window. This is quite inconvenient. Is there a way to fix this issue so I can open PDF files directly from windows explorer?
    Many thanks!

I had to install adobe reader, but   PDF's used to display just fine with IE, any idea what happened ?

  • New hard drive shows in Bios and device manager but not in windows explorer in windows 7

I have added a new sata 500gig hard drive and it is recognised in the bios, but is not recognised by windows explorer, though the disk is showing in device manager as a hard drive . I have followed the example on the forum by going to computer management and rescanning disks, to no avail.

Thanks Dale (and everyone else). A cure! Sorry I did not reply earlier, but have been trying all known fixes to no avail... However. The second of your links in the last reply of yours (starting, New Drive or mapped network drive) worked with a slight variation in windows7, as follows is how I achieved joy.
Right-click My Computer , and then click Manage .
Under Computer Management (Local) , click Disk Management .
This far is as above, then I'll add comments to the existing help to show my variant.
In the list of drives in the right pane, right-click the new drive and then click Change Drive Letter and Path(s) .
Here it still did not show the drive in the right window, but below it there is a second window listing disks and one of them unallocated and without a drive letter was my new drive.  IMPORTANT! This set of info may not be apparent unless you enlarge the box by dragging it, as the default only shows the top box (so I have missed it until now on all my searching). Right clicking on this gave a set of obvious choices to create a choice of drive letter, format and options (NTFS etc) and this created the drive for me. I am sorry I am vague on the box choices, but on right selecting a live drive it doesn't bring up the "unallocated" box choices again. Many thanks and I hope my variant helps anyone else with a similar prob. Thanks again - Rob
Click Change , and in the drop-down box, select a drive letter for the new drive that is not assigned to a mapped network drive.
Click OK , and then click OK again.

  • What is Windows Explorer in Windows 8.1?

I am sorry for this rudimentary question.  I am not a novice user, but have been using Windows for over two decades.
I used to think Windows Explorer was File Explorer, but sometimes it still has very high CPU usage after all File Explorer windows are closed.  Searching Windows Explorer on the machine turns out nothing named Windows Explorer.
    Hong

    Hi,
This the analysis of the etl file:
It clearly shows that explorer.exe takes up almost 50% cpu, and the culprit of the high CPU is two threads under the process: TID 4852 (24%)and TID 9184(24%) (the number of TID can be different each time you capture the trace), to further find out what the
TID refers to, you can use process explorer to find process running under explorer.exe, find the culprit
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Or use Process monitor, filter the two TIDs (it depends on the real-time capture result), then see what
    the two TIDs refer to.
    Add:
There's another tool named shellExView which can list shell extensions within Windows Explorer, you can refer to the guide below to disable third party extensions, test the result

  • How to restrict "Open Applications" window from showing C drive? Or use the Windows Explorer "Open" Window?

Hi, Im new to JDeveloper and I work in a school which requires restriction of the C: Drive. Does any one know how I can either stop the "Open Applications" dialog from showing this drive or Use the Windows Explorer "Open" dialog window to browse files, the drive has been hidden and restricted using GPO but JDeveloper shows the C: drive?
    Any help is much appreciated.

Hi and thanks Timo. We are using 12c. On the Windows side of things, we are using Win7 and we have hidden the drives we don't want the user to see using GPO but obviously Jdev then shows these drives in its "Open Applications" Window and allows access. As far as the environmental variable is concerned this is something that I put in place.
Many thanks for your reply and the link to the tech doc.

  • Windows Explorer freezing up

I am hoping to include all the info needed, but I may miss something.  I have a person on Win7Pro 64 bit, and when she accesses a network drive, there is one particular folder that sometimes will cause the Explorer Window that pops up to freeze...you
can't close it, you can't move it, nothing.  You either have to shut down the computer or else you can try using Task Manager to close it.  It doesn't happen all the time, and sometimes it is during sub-folders on that share.  I have mapped
via ip as well as fqdn and doesn't seem to matter.  I got her on a new laptop, thinking it might be within her profile....same thing happens.  I have made sure the laptop is up to date with patches, and offline files are disabled, but for the life
of me can't figure this out.  Any suggestions?

    Hi mmealio,
Since this issue happens on specific folder, multiple machines and intermittently, we wonder if this folder is shared to many users because it might be caused by network traffic.
Try set a lower number in Limit the number of simultaneous user option for that folder and check the issue again.
To change limit number of simultaneous user.
    Right click folder->properties->sharing ->advance settings
If the issue still persists, you could use process monitor to find out which process

Hi, I just upgraded to OSX 10.5.8 and now the delete button in the main mail window does not seem to be working. The other buttons work, and if you hit the delete key that works. The delete button at the top of a message window also seems to continue to work. This is strange behavior. I will try to reboot again to see if that helps.

I am seeing the same issue. Very annoying. Tried resetting the toolbar too - did not work. Any help Apple?

Flash CS6 freezes as soon as it gets to the work screen, whether I open it via a file or by the program itself.  This is after I updated Flash CS6 through the Update 2... twice!
I also emptied out fontinfo.txt, set it to read-only... and when that didn't work, I just deleted the file.  Nothing's changed.  The only way to get Flash to work a 2nd time is to restart my computer again.
What am I doing wrong?  I would appreciate any help.

Well, it's been a while since my last report, mostly because I haven't been using the program as much... however, today I needed to use it and well... it happened.  And it happened on a blank document too.  I made sure that all my other applications were closed at this time, and when I rebooted it, it continues to freeze.  Here is what I saw on the task manager.  Seems to be pretty similar to last time:
I use Flash to do Timeline animation and sometimes vector art.  The program has crashed before on a reset of preferences.  You also noted that there is a Flash.exe instead of a Flash 32.exe, I don't see it in the task manager at all... I only see the Flash 32 that I've been posting.
Perhaps I may be missing something, but the reasons for crashing that you listed do not seem to be the reasons why I am crashing and freezing.  While I can understand loading up a bloated file and having it crash the program, I have never seen this program until CS6 freeze once, and then from then on out, until I restart the computer, it will freeze time and time again.  It's bewildering as to why that is happening.
The Application doesn't seem to be sucking in a ton of memory.  The application will crash out-of-the-blue.  Sometimes when I simply click into the program on a blank doc (like this last crash), it will freeze up.  And if the program isn't even able to work with a blank doc, I don't think the content of ANY file is the problem.
I'm really at a loss.  I might have to downgrade back to CS3.  This is one of my most used programs, and if it's impossible to have it run smoothly without me having to restart my computer every few hours, I'm not really sure what to do.
