X230T stylus accuracy?

I recently bought an X230T after ten years on Mac Powerbooks / Macbook Pros.
Unfortunately, I have found the X230T's stylus to be really inaccurate, especially towards the top and sides of the screen. The pointer floats several millimeters down from the actual tip of the stylus. I work with digital images and mostly use Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and CameraBits Photo Mechanic. The X230T is advertised as a tablet PC but as such, I have found it to be unfit for purpose.
I have had the latop less than a week, so called Lenovo this morning to request a return.
Before I send the thing back, can anyone suggest how I might be able to improve the stylus accuracy? I've run calibration over and over, and have installed Wacom's 7.1.0-8 driver, but there has been no improvement.
Many thanks.

Watch this video. The info you want starts at about 1:30.
Bottom line, it is very important to keep the same, fairly vertical angle on the stylus when calibration.
Hope this helps.

  • Writing on the screen using a stylus is really poor

I have a Twist and I teach using this laptop.  When I teach, I will often write on the laptop screen.  For instance, in PowerPoint you can use the Pen functionality to write on the slides and the audience can see what you have written as you write.  I have always used a Bamboo Tablet to do this.  However, I assumed the Twist touchscreen would make the Bamboo tablet obsolete.  However, the writing on the Twist touch screen is terrible... unless I am missing something.
When I write using the Bamboo tablet, I can get nice smooth letters.  When I write using the touchscreen the letters get squared off.  The touchscreen is unable to handle it.  PLease see below.  The red was written using a capacive stylus with the touchscreen.  The stylus was a Jot Classic by Adonit.  The blue was written using a tablet that plugs into the usb port.  The tablet was a Bamboo Tablet and the stylus that cam with it.  Do you see how the red letters tend to have a lot of straight lines while the blue is nice and smooth.  Is this just a limitation with using the touch screen that I will have to live with?   I have seen other claim they do note taking on the Twist.  I can't believe that after my experience.  What am I missing?

The Bamboo has a much higher sensitivity to pen input compared to the Twist. I think that what you are seeing is a result of the difference in the ability to detect the pen between the two. To make the Bamboo tablet obsolete, you would probably need to purchase an x230t, ThinkPad Tablet 2, or other product with a digitizer that supported a pen. The Twist is only really designed to be poked at with fingers.
You might have better luck with a larger capacitive stylus since the Jot classic has a very fine tip.

  • Windows 8 upgrade on X230T

    Hi
I wish to upgrade to Windows 8 on the X230T.
I want to make use of the stylus improvements.
I am a writer. I use Word and write in long hand with the stylus. Later I revise the document when after it is converted to text.
I am concerned about any problems with the upgrade.
I am particulalry concerned about the function of the stylus and the conversion of wrting to text.
What has been the experience of others?
Overall, what problems can I anticipate in the conversion?
Should I wait for fixes to Windows 8?
    Thanks
    Steve

    Really strange
Anyway before trying to install Win 8, you should definitely create an Recovery disk containing the preinstalled Win 7 system!
Why? Because you will not be able to install Win 7 anymore without the recovery disk.
So if you want to use Win 7 in the future, create such disk.
    Now back to Win 8.
Please access the BIOS and switch from CSM to UEFI.
Save the changes and then boot from the Win 8 DVD
Would be interesting to know if this would work

  • Update on X230T build quality? Buy or Don't?

    Hey,
I am considering buying an X230T. But I am not sure if I should. Everything I have read about the X230T in the forums have been kind of discouraging.
Especially where the function keys scratch the screen when it is closed. Has there been an update on this?
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have had my X230T for about 8 months with no build issues.
As for keys scratching the screen, I read posts about that before
    I got my X230T so I got this :
    http://www.radtech.us/products/notebookscreensavrz
Its a microfiber cloth that comes in sizes to match any
notebook screen that goes between the keyboard and
the screen when a notebook is folded and prevents
the keys or anything else scratching the screen or transfer
of dirt/oil from keys to screen and also acts as a cleaning
cloth if you need to clean the screen.
This is especially important if you get the indoor screen (Multitouch)
option which does NOT have gorilla glass but allows
finger touch without stylus like I have. The indoor screen
is apparantly much more prone to scratches.
If you get the Multitouch screen keep those
    fingernails short ..

  • [Helix 2nd gen] Alternative stylus options

    Hi all,
Loving my Helix 2nd gen so far. Not happy with the palm rejection (only starts when very close; would love to double the range). But I guess I will just create a toggle button that deactivates the touch screen through the registry.
Anyway, my question: Are there any alternative stylus options for the Helix 2nd gen? I found an older thread indicating that "penabled" Wacom styli(?) work, but I don't think this attribute is displayed on any of their current products.
Any styli you can recommend for the current Helix? (Maybe even one that extends the palm rejection distance?)
    Thanks for your advice!
    Moritz

I just tested the Stylus of the Lenovo X230T and it works without issues. Guess I have to calibrate it though. The thing I do not like with the Stylus of the Helix 2nd is that the click button is plan to the stylus. So it is allways hard to find and press if you have some bigger fingers.
So - any other Lenovo Wacom Stylus should run, I guess.

  • I have Zagg Invishield installed, what's the best stylus

I just want a stylus that's quick, and efficient. Precision and price aren't really my concern but I don't really like the mixed reviews pogo has received.. so maybe there's other alternatives. I use Noterize for my note taking/typing with an external keyboard app.

The touch screen is not pressure sensitive, but use capacitance.
So pretty much all of the iPhone/ipad stylus are the same.
They have a spongey type material at the end, which does not lend itself to pinpoint accuracy.

  • Polygonal lasso tool not working with stylus on Surface Pro 2

    Hi guys,
I'm new here so please bare with me if I'm posting in the wrong place or don't make immediate sense.
Hardeware / software used: surface pro 2 and I'm running photoshop CS5.
Problem is a fairly basic one: I am trying to make basic selections using the polygonal lasso tool (using the stylus that comes with the tablet) but it simply will not work. All I get when I touch the stylus to the screen is the circle that appears then fades. If I attach the keypad and try using that then it works no problem at all.
Does anyone have any ideas as to whether there is a particular setting that I need to switch on or off e.g. something relating to pressure sensitivity (although not sure why this would affect this particular selection tool)?
I've searched the web and come up with nothing so far so any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks for your time
    Scott

same problem on surface pro 3 !!!!
and i think quite significant, for lot of artists using polygonal lasso a lot (including me). How come that the stupid surface cannot work properly

  • X230t and Windows 8 - tablet rotate and control buttons don't work

I am the proud owner of a new x230 tablet and I couldn't resist the tempation to load up Windows 8 on it.  Overall I have found the operating system to work fairly well on the system as installed "out of the box"; however, I have noticed that when the computer is put in tablet mode the screen doesn't rotate, even if the rotate hardware button is pressed.  Has anyone else encountered this and if so is there a solution other then waiting for the official release of the operating system and windows 8 certified drivers.
    Thanks

This is for win7 but should also work in win8 because it is a simple configuration thing:

  • Can't print to Epson Stylus

    iMac Intel
    Mac OSX 10.6.8
Epson Stylus Photo T60 (USB connection)
Printed fine last night, as it has ever since I bought it a couple of years ago. This morning suddenly does not print.
    Troubleshooting done so far:
    1. Turned off printer, restarted and tested: no go.
    2. Restarted computer, tested: no go.
    3. Tested printing from macbookpro using same cable: prints fine; hence cable works, printer works.
    4. Tested iMac USB port with scanner: communicates with scanner, USB port is ok.
    5. Tried restoring system > library > Printers from Time Machine set to last night (when it last worked), and tested: no go.
    6. Deleted printer from print settings and reinstalled, tested: no go.
Please can anyone help me interpret console's printer log?  Or otherwise pinpoint the problem and help me with a solution?  Many thanks in advance!

  • PXI 2527 & PXI 4071 -Questions about EMF considerations for high accuracy measurements and EMF calibration schemes?

    Hi!
I need to perform an in-depth analysis of the overall system accuracy for a proposed system. I'm well underway using the extensive documentation in the start-menu National Instruments\NI-DMM\ and ..\NI-Switch\ Documenation folders...
While typing the question, I think I partially answered myself while cross-referencing NI documents... However a couple of questions remain:
If I connect a DMM to a 2 by X arranged switch/mux, each DMM probe will see twice the listed internal "Differential thermal EMF" at a typical value of 2.5uV and a max value of less than 12uV (per relay). So the total effect on the DMM uncertainty caused by the switch EMF would be 2*2.5uV = 5uV? Or should these be added as RSS: = sqrt(2.5^2+2.5^2) since you can not know if the two relays have the same emf?
Is there anything that can be done to characterize or account for this EMF (software cal, etc?)?
    For example, assuming the following:
    * Instruments and standards are powered on for several hours to allow thermal stability inside of the rack and enclosures
    * temperature in room outside of rack is constant
Is there a reliable way of measureing/zeroing the effect of system emf? Could this be done by applying a high quality, low emf short at the point where the DUT would normally be located, followed by a series of long-aperture voltage average measurements at the lowest DMM range, where the end result (say (+)8.9....uV) could be taken as a system calibration constant accurate to the spec's of the DMM?
What would the accuracy of the 4071 DMM be, can I calculate it as follows, using 8.9uV +-700.16nV using 90 days and 8.9uV +- 700.16nV + 150nV due to "Additional noise error" assuming integration time of 1 (aperture) for ease of reading the chart, and a multiplier of 15 for the 100mV range. (Is this equivalent to averaging a reading of 1 aperture 100 times?)
So, given the above assumptions, would it be correct to say that I could characterize the system EMF to within  8.5uV+- [700.16nV (DMM cal data) + 0.025ppm*15 (RMS noise, assuming aperture time of 100*100ms = 10s)] = +-[700.16nV+37.5nV] = +- 737.66nV? Or should the ppm accuracy uncertainties be RSS as such: 8.5uV +- sqrt[700.16nV^2 + 37.5nV^2] = 8.5uV +-701.16nV??
As evident by my above line of thought, I am not at all sure how to properly sum the uncertainties (I think you always do RSS for uncertainties from different sources?) and more importantly, how to read and use the graph/table in the NI 4071 Specifications.pdf on page 3. What exactly does it entail to have an integration time larger than 1? Should I adjust the aperture time or would it be more accurate to just leave aperture at default (100ms for current range) and just average multiple readings, say average 10 to get a 10x aperture equivalent?
The below text includes what was going to be the post until I think I answered myself. I left it in as it is relevant to the problem above and includes what I hope to be correct statements. If you are tired of reading now, just stop, if you are bored, feel free to comment on the below section as well.
The problem I have is one of fully understanding part of this documenation. In particular, since a relay consists of (at least) 2 dissimilar metal junctions (as mentioned in the NI Switch help\Fundamentals\General Switching Considerations\Thermal EMF and Offset Voltage section) and because of the thermo-couple effect (Seebeck voltage), it seems that there would be an offset voltage generated inside each of the relays at the point of the junction. It refeers the "Thermocouple Measurements" section (in the same help document) for further details, but this is where my confusion starts to creep up.
In equation (1) it gives the expression for determining E_EMF which for my application is what I care about, I think (see below for details on my application).
What confuses me is this: If my goal is to, as accurately as possible, determine the overall uncertainty in a system consisting of a DMM and a Switch module, do I use the "Differential thermal EMF" as found in the switch data-sheet, or do I need to try and estimate temperatures in the switch and use the equation?
*MY answer to my own question:
By carefully re-reading the example in the thermocouple section of the switch, I realized that they calculate 2 EMF's, one for the internal switch, calculated as 2.5uV (given in the spec sheet of the switch as the typical value) and one for the actual thermocouple. I say actual, because I think my initial confusion stems from the fact that the documenation talks about the relay/switch junctions as thermocouples in one section, and then talks about an external "probe" thermocouple in the next and I got them confused.
As such, if I can ensure low temperatures inside the switch at the location of the junctions (by adequate ventilation and powering down latching relays), I should be able to use 2.5uV as my EMF from the switch module, or to be conservative, <12uV max (from data sheet of 2527 again).
I guess now I have a hard time believeing the 2.5uV typical value listed.. They say the junctions in the relays are typically an iron-nickel alloy against a copper-alloy. Well, those combinations are not explicitly listed in the documenation table for Seebeck coefficients, but even a very small value, like 0.3uV/C adds up to 7.5uV at 25degC. I'm thinking maybe the table values in the NI documentation reffers to the Seebeck values at 25C?

Seebeck EMV needs temperature gradients , in your relays you hopefully have low temperature gradients ... however in a switching contact you can have all kind diffusions and 'funny' effects, keeping them on same temperature is the best you can do.
Since you work with a multiplexer and with TCs, you need a good Cold junction ( for serious calibrations at 0°C ) and there is the good place for your short cut to measure the zero EMV. Another good test is loop the 'hot junction' back to the cold junction and observe the residual EMV.  Touching (or heating/cooling) the TC loop gives another number for the uncertainty calculation: the inhomogeneous material of the TC itself..
A good source for TC knowledge:

    retained,
all will be for naught unless one simple important fact is
    kept firmly in mind.
The thermocouple reports only what it "feels."
This may or may not the temperature of interest'

Problems with Epson Stylus 3000 IP Ethernet
The printer stops processing after reaching 1,72% of printing.
The Ethernet Cards led is on and blinking green.
    I am running
    Powerbook G4
    OSX 10.4.5
Epson Stylus Color 3000 + Cups Gimp Print v4.2.7
I can se the printer in Epson MacAssist for OSX Ver 4.0.aE IP 10.0.0.6
I can se it as well in Safari under the ip adress 10.0.0.6
I have tried to test the printer in the Common Unix Printing System
I can see the printer there as well.
A test print here results in
"ipp" stopped unexpectedly with status 1
All my other printers work well and prints test sheets.
The printer has not worked since Tiger.

    Can you please help me....
I can't seem to get the Print Set up utility to find the Epson Stylus 3000 Gimp.
I installed the GimpPrint Drivers that were on the Tiger 10.4.3 install DVD after I installed 10.4.3, and then updated 10.4.3 to 10.4.5.
When I first installed 10.4.3, I didn't install the GimpPrint Drivers. I went back to the DVD after updating to 10.4.5, and then installed the GimpPrint Drivers.
Can you please help me out in what I'm doing wrong. Everytime I try to find the Epson Drivers an "error:-50" comes up in the Printer Browser under IP Printer section.
    Here's what I'm doing:
    - I go into Printer Setup Utility
    - I choose Add Printer
    - I choose IP Printer
    - I choose Line Printer Daemon - LPD
    - I pop up the "Print using" and select the "EPSON".
    - Then I choose "EPSON Stylus Color 3000 - Gimp-Print v5.0.0-beta2
    - THEN I GET AN ERROR MESSAGE POP-UP! "An error occurrd while trying to add the selected printer. Error:-50"
    Where did you find the:
Epson Stylus Color 3000 + Cups Gimp Print v4.2.7
Thank you for you help in advance!

  • X220 Tablet: Stylus does not work in Windows 8.1

EDIT: In perhaps the most embarrassing moment to have asked for help in my entire life, I restarted my computer and everything works fine now.  I must not have restarted after one of the drivers was installed for some reason.  This topic can be locked.
    Original Post:
    Hello,
I am a digital artist so I rely on the hardiness of my X220's pen/stylus/digitizer for a lot of my laptop use.  This fall my laptop had a virus that required it to be reset to factory settings, and so I decided it would be a good time to upgrade to Windows 8.1 (from Windows 7) before installing any programs.  I now have Windows 8.1 and it is working fine; however, my pen is not being detected by my system.  My fingers are being detected on the touchscreen, so I know the touch screen works.  I did not try my pen since resetting to factory settings, so I do not know whether it worked before I upgraded to Windows 8.1.  I would assume the issue is a missing driver, but I could not find the right driver on Lenovo's website and the digitizer update utility produces an error when I click "Update."  I was wondering if anybody had an idea for what I could do.  I would assume I am not the first person to try updating to Windows 8.1 on an X220, nor the first to reset an X220 to factory settings.  However, a brief search of Lenovo's support forums and of the internet has shown no solutions to my particular problem.
Here are drivers I am using that strike me as relevent, as well as their version and date.  Maybe that will help with a solution.  I'm sure the solution is an easy one.
    HID-compliant digitizer (6.3.96... 6/21/2006, up-to-date)
    HID-compliant pen (6.3.96... 6/21/2006, up-to-date)
    Wacom Device (3.1.0.5 4/11/2014, up-to-date)
    ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device (16.2.19.7 4/17/2013, up-to-date)
    HID-compliant Mouse (3.1.0.5 4/11/2014, up-to-date)
Thank you!  Please let me know if there's any other information I should provide!

If it doesn't work for certain applications then you may go through the followings:
    GetAltTabInfo function

  • New Modern UI app titlebars misbehaving when using stylus (pen) on tablet

When switching from the desktop to a Modern UI app by tapping the corresponding taskbar button the new titlebar of Modern UI apps behaves differently depending on input method:
    1. Finger: the titlebar is not shown at all (correct behaviour)
    2. Mouse: the titlebar appears and stays for a few seconds (correct behavior)
    3. Stylus: the titlebar will only appear for a second. In fact, as soon as tapping the taskbar button, the titlebar will be displayed at the top of the screen but instantly starts fading/moving out of the screen. Shortly after disappearing, the  titlebar
is displayed again for a split second without any animation. This is visually contradicting with the fade out animation just before and creates a very irritating flickering of the titlebar.
Additionally, I'm not able to summon the titlebar again by moving the stylus to the top of the screen.
I don't think this behavior is correct. Either the titlebar should not be displayed at all (like with finger input) or it should stay there for a short duration to make the user aware of itself (like mouse input). Since the titlebar is in fact not usable with
a stylus (you can't get it to show again), going with the finger input way would be the quickest fix.
I'm using the built-in Wacom powered digitizer on an ASUS VivoTab Note 8.

    Hi,
    Thanks for you feedback.
Can you test on another tablet? If there is the same issue, I would submit a report about this, as we are trying to bring the best experience to customers.
