X240 Clickpad problems

Hi, I think I might have a defective clickpad and wanted some opinions to see if people agree.  Just got the computer about 4 days ago.  The clickpad never registers a click if I use the area of the clickpad that's actually marked for that purpose.  I have to click about 1/4 of the way down the pad to get any response.  I also can't find the middle button at all.  I have sat trying to get it with about 50 button presses over 2 or 3 minutes, and simply can't get the scroll feature to work (middle button is "enabled" in the control panel).  I experience about a 50% success rate in getting a right click.
When I purchased the computer, the upper right section of the clickpad was stuck against the side of the laptop palmrest... eventually I pressed on it fairly firmly and it heard a pretty loud noise as it moved into its natural place.
Really frustrated with the changes to the trackpoint (and it's associated buttons) in the "new" lenovos.  I might not even care about these issues if press-to-select hadn't also been eliminated.  Sucks for a decade long trackpoint user...
- Chris
P.S.  I have the most current ultranav drivers installed, have also tried the .34 drivers and an older 17.x driver; to no avail.
Solved!

Hi cal3713,
Clicking on the red lines and raised dots should work.
Clicking the narrow angled strip at the front will always get you a left click. Right click detection relies on you touching the right of the large flat part of the clickpad. What are you touching the clickpad with when you click? Skin or nail?
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

  • X240 sleep problems

I have a new ThinkPad X240 with problems recovering from sleep mode.  This computer has two hard drives one being a small solid state drive and the 2nd a sata.  The problem is being able to recover from being in sleep mode for hours.  It really does not seem to recover from sleep mode.
I commonly do a clean install of these using Win 7-64 Corporate but this time this problem started and even continued after using the Lenovo System Update program to get the latest BIOS and drivers.
I have phoned Lenovo support multiple times and the last time had it shipped back to Lenovo for tests and restored the original image and still have the same problem.
As usual I have Googled the problem and read of similiar problems on this forum but still have not found a fix.
the latest problem that seemed to start by connecting the computer to a docking station is the Windows 7 error 0x0000185 upon booting.
This morning the problem was somewhat different after being in sleep mode overnight.

    Hi Pslates,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you facing the issue with system not resuming after sleeping on your ThinkPad X240.
Uninstall the Graphic adapter from the system and check it.
Is the issue occurs when you are using the system with docking station?
    Best regards,
    Hemanth Kumar

  • [kUBUNTU] X240 Clickpad

I bought a X240 and installed kUBUNTU 14.04 on it. Everything worked fine during installation execpt the clickpad.
I bought several thinkpads since T21 in 2001 as I love the trackpoint so much. Now the X240 is a mess, it's impossible to work with the trackpoint as by unintended approach to the pad, a windows is moved or may be minimized, icons got rotated, whatever. It's impossible to work with the computer witout an external mouse which is absolutely not intended.
    My Questions:
Under WINDOWS I tried to disable the clickpad in the BIOS, this worked and kept the mouse buttons alive; this could be a preferred option for me. Doing the same under LINUX, the mouse buttons are disabled, e.g. no option. Anybody out there can tell me the reason for this difference?
What is the designed working-principle of the mouse buttons: Necessary to press down (move the pad mechanically down with hearable noise) or sufficient to lay on a finger at the appropriate location?
Anybody using the X240 or a similar clickpad machine and could tell me his configuration?
There are lots of decriptions of these problems and modifications of the Setup-File (50-synaptics.conf) like:
    UbuntuForum
    ArchLinux
    ThinkWiki
    Splitbrain
    MyDevelopedWorld
    GabrielSaldana
    Librador
    WhoT
but as I'm not really sure about the designed principle of the pad, it's really hard to follow.
    Thank you

    Hey michah,
I'm using trying to use a W540 which is delivered with the same ... device. My configuration actually looks like this:
To achieve the reliable configuration with scrolling on middle click and trackpoint you have to build your own evdev driver from source patched with some stuff from synaptics. It sounds more complicated than it really is, there's a guy who put all neccessary steps into a script (which needs some fixes since he mixed up some file names) here:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-evdev/+bug/1246683/comments/40
You have to use some custom xorg.conf files to make things work afterwards:
Make shure the folder /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ exists on your system (create it with root access if neccessary). Copy the following configuration into a new file located into that folder which has to end with .conf like "90-clickpad.conf"
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
    MatchIsTouchpad "yes"
    Driver "evdev"
    Option "AreaTopEdge" "2700"
    Option "AreaBottomEdge" "0"
    Option "AreaRightEdge" "0"
    Option "AreaLeftEdge" "0"
    Option "SoftButtonAreas" "3600 0 0 2300 2750 3600 0 2300"
    EndSection
    Section "InputClass"
      Identifier      "Trackpoint"
      MatchProduct    "TrackPoint"
      MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
      MatchDriver     "evdev"
      Option          "EmulateWheel"        "true"
      Option          "EmulateWheelTimeout" "200"
      Option          "EmulateWheelButton"  "2"
      Option          "XAxisMapping"        "6 7"
      Option          "YAxisMapping"        "4 5"
    EndSection
Most likely you have to correct the values after "AreaTopEdge" and "SoftButtonAreas". The first one defines the upper-most edge from bottom for using the default touchpad behavior, the second one defines the right and left mouse button areas like this:
    RB-from-left RB-from-right RB-from-top RB-from-bottom MB-from-left MB-from-right MB-from-top MB-from-bottom
Without using the custom built evdev driver things work the same but without using middle mouse and trackpoint as scroll wheel. If you are interested in my deb for 64bit systems please drop me a line. It works on Debian-based systems like Debian-Ubuntu-Mint whatever D/E you are running. To get the coordinates for your poersonal clickpad configuration use "synclient -m 1" before you eventually remove the synaptics driver.
    Cheers, Markus.

  • Re: x240 wireless problems and extreme lag after startup

No Solution, but the 'lag' pro

Just wanted to let the people that posted in here know that since making the switch to Windows 7, I haven't had any of the aforementioned problems with x240. While it has only been 5 days, I usually had at least one of those other problems occur every single day while using Windows 8. This is a poor fix as this should not be occurring at all, but it is a fix at least if you are experiencing these problems. Now if I could find a solution to keep the laptop from crashing when picked up from the bottom left hand side due to connection being lost with the SSD. That one is truly ridiculous.

  • X240 CPU problem

    My processor: i7-4600U CPU @ 2.10GHz
As observed from Task Manager, my CPU usage has never exceeded 29% - 30% in the past 6 months I have been using this laptop.
Regardless of the intensity of the application I am trying to run, it is always this case, although some apps can get really laggy at this seemingly 'throttled' CPU speed.
I have checked my power settings and ensure that the processor performance has been set up correctly.
I have also run Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool 64bit 2.10.0.0.MP-1 . It passed the first 3 tests (Genuine Intel Test, Temperature Test, Brand String Test), but failed at the 4th one (CPU Frequency Test).
    Passed:
    --- Reading CPU Manufacturer ---
    Expected --> GenuineIntel
    Detected --> GenuineIntel
Found --- Genuine Intel Processor ---
    --- Temperature Test ---
    Temperature Test Passed!!!
    Temperature = 49 degrees C below maximum.
    --- Reading Brand String ---
    Detected Brand String:
    Intel Core i7-4600U 2.10GHz
    Brand String Test Passed!!!
    Failed:
    --- Reading CPU Frequency ---
Expected CPU Frequency is --> 2.10
Detected CPU Frequency is --> 0.800005
    CPU Frequency Test Failed!!!
I had tried to contact Lenovo livechat for support, but they seems to be avoiding the problem by redirecting my attention to other areas. Despite doing all as asked, I don't see any improvement at all.

Managed to do a thorough search online and found that the problem is "throttling". After downloading ThrottleStop, I retook the Intel test and monitored the speed along with Task Manager, the CPU went to as high as 3.0 GHz +. For safety of the computer, I enabled throttling back upon completing the test. Has there been any software updates (BIOS, etc) for thinkpads to solve problems like this? I reinstalled the latest BIOS yesterday but it seems it did not solve the problem.

  • X240 wireless problems

Let me start by addressing the problem. My wireless connection will at times drop connection with the network, either by stating that I have "limited access" to the network or that no internet access is available. The way that I have been solving this problem is by disconnecting from the network and then reconnecting, often requiring me to go through "Troubleshooting". After troubleshooting, Windows tells me that it fixed a problem with the "access point" and then I am reconnected. Needless to say, this is unacceptable to be occuring once every 30 minutes or so. I need a stable internet connection... quite within reason I think.
In device manager, I go to network adapters and the device listed is Intel Wireless N-7260. The drivers installed for it are version 16.1.3.1. It says the date of the drivers are from August 1st. I have been seeing a lot of posts about wireless lan drivers missing on the product, as well as bluetooth drivers? I don't know specifically if my computer is missing these drivers, but I really would appreciate any feedback in resolving this problem. If I can't get a reliable connection to the internet, I am going to have to return the product. Thank you.

    Hello space,
I also have a tp link 3g router (aside from the other two tp link routers i use at work and home) that I use when i'm travelling and the same thing happens. I connect, then wifi disconnects, then other devices are unable to connect already.
I also use tp link routers at home and another at the office. After upgrading the LAN drivers, it seems to have solved the problem with my home and office routers but the problem still happens on my 3g router.

  • X240 (Win 8.1) w/ Ultra Dock and two external monitors connected via DisplayPort problem

I'm having trouble making this combination work. This Ultra Dock does have two DP connectors, computer sees both external monitors (HP ZR24w) but I cannot get any picture on both at the same time using DP. Sometimes one display does work, but that is not always working.
When I connect same monitors via VGA/DSUB and DP (with Lenovo DPtoDVI converter) I can get this to work - both same time - , but I'd prefer them both digital and both native DP as both monitors do have that port.
Ultra Dock does already have the latest firmware and this problem seems to not relate to the flickering problem with T440 etc. X240 is also running latest UEFI/BIOS and I've also tried latest Intel Beta display driver, no effect.

Let me start by saying that the internal and both external monitors work simultaneously. However, getting to that state is the problem.
I can boot successfully with the laptop in the dock with 1) just the internal monitor, or 2) the internal and one external monitor connected.
However, if I try to boot with both monitors connected via DVI, the following happens:
Windows logon screen appears -- but there is no cursor on the screen
I enter the password and the login continues for 30-60 seconds, then
Blue screen SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION for nvlddmkm.sys with STOP x0000003B
Lenovo has replaced the dock with no change in behavior.
    Drivers and BIOS are current.
Most recent change was to set BIOS so Win 7 automatically detects Nvidia Optimus.
At this point, my best workaround is to disconnect one external monitor whenever I need to reboot, and then connect it again after everything is runing. Not terrible... but it really shouldn't be necessary. Any suggestions?
If you want to drive the monitors in the manner stated, the BIOS Display property must be set to Discrete and the auto detection below it must be disabled.

  • X240 video freeze problems

Recently picked up a new X240 CTO and running into some unfortunate issues. I think they are video related.
    - when resuming from standby, sometimes the system will not turn the screen on. You can tell things are still "working" behind the scenes (mute lights work etc.) but the screen is a no-go. Have to either reboot or force the system back to sleep (I was able to get it by scanning my finger to get past the login, then Winkey, Right, Right, S will sleep the system again). Pretty random.
    - twice now, the system has just randomly hard-locked. No BSOD, the image on teh screen just completely freezes. Its happened right after logging in and once while I clicked the button to turn off Wifi.
I am also getting a strange fan noise, almost a grinding sound, when the fan is running and you move the machine around. I think there is a thread about that already.
Any ideas? I am running Win7 64bit SP1, all drivers up to date as per TVSU. Latest BIOS.
I have disabled 30day standby and the "self refresh" option in the Intel graphics options.

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m really sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad X240 is randomly freezing.
Ensure that air vents are not blocked and there is a proper air flow. Also, check the speeds at which the fan is spinning.
    1. Remove all external devices and restore factory default hardware configurations by uninstalling all non-bundled devices.
    2. Power on the machine with AC adapter and battery then check whether the problem still exists.
    3. Go to BIOS by tapping F1 while Lenovo logo appears. Choose Config -> Power and ensure the below settings are as recommended.
    Intel(R) SpeedStep technology [Enabled]
    Mode for AC [Maximum Performance]
    Mode for Battery [Maximum Performance]
    Scheme for AC [Maximum Performance]
    Scheme for Battery [Maximum Performance]
Then press F9 [Save and Exit].
    4. Ensure Power Manager is configured correctly. Open Power Manager, Click Switch to: "Basic", Click "Power Plan" tab, Select "Maximum Performance", Press Apply then click Ok.
    5. Boot up and press F8 to enter Safe Mode to check if the boot up speed is normal.
    6. Input "msconfig" and click the tab "Startup" to disable all. Reboot and then shut down. If problem resolved, narrow down to specific startup file.
    7. Run a complete virus scan.
    8. Run Lenovo Solution center diagnostics and check if there is any hardware failure.
    9. Run Lenovo system update and Windows update.
Also, check in event viewer to see what exactly is causing the freeze.
Hope this helps! Post back if issue persists.
    Best regards,
    Mithun.

  • X240 - Thinkpad Ultra dock Problem with external monitors

I have tried to connect my two external monitors to the dock (the one connected to the vga port) but it was only able to detect one of them (though at a low resolution) and not the other. i have tried using a replicator to connect the screen to the dvi and the usb  ports but nothing seemed to work
Did anyone face the same problem and how were they able to resolve it - any recommendation for a port replicator brand / usb to vga display adapter to use that would work?
    Thanks

Seems that there is no solution now, because DP MST should be implemented in Linux: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72795

  • U310 clickpad button problem

Sorry if this has been discussed already; could not find it with search.  I am having a problem with the cursor moving when I click either of my buttons because the active area of the pad includes the buttons.  It is very annoying and limiting with the right button especially.  I have been to the Synaptics pointing device properties area numerous times and looked extensively for a way to adjust the active area to eliminate the problem, all without success.  This problem is making me quite unhappy with my decision to buy a U310.  Any help would be much appreciated.

    hi hfa29155,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Can you try to boot the computer in Safe Mode and observe if you still get the same issue. If everything's ok, there's probably an application on the background that's causing those pages to open up. Try to perform a clean boot and observe the PC.
    Let me know your findings
    Cheers

My problem:Bluetooth sets up and appears to work fine for a few minutes, then stops working.  It doesn't work until either the system is restarted or the Bluetooth adapter is disabled and then re-enabled, but in any case stops working again after a short while). When it stops working, the Bluetooth device status in device manager shows as "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"This problem started after upgrading to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit this week from 8.1.  I upgraded from 8.1, and then did a clean re-install.  Never had issues in 8.1.I currently using a Logitech Bluetooth mouse.Tried so far and did not work:Updated drivers using the newest version of Lenovo System Update for Windows 10Installed the newest version of Intel PROSet Bluetooth drivers (released only two days ago on 7/29/15) for the AC7260Uninstalled Intel drivers and rolled back to default Windows driversTried Windows 10 troubleshooting to no avail. Thanks in advance for a solution.

I found this same problem on my brand-new, out of the box MacBook last Friday, and then the same solution you found. It's not ideal, since this also hoses the network settings, but it did get BT back working again.
However, today, almost a week later, the problem is back. I do sleep this little machine frequently, which may have something to do with the problem. I have seen other threads mention the same problem.
What unfortunately I have not seen yet from anybody is a more substantial fix to the problem. Then again, I haven't scoured this forum completely yet.
Thanks in advance for any more clues!

  • X240 keyboard indicators light problem

    Hi,
The indicator lights have seemed to have swapped positions on the keyboard on my x240.
When I press the mute key, the light on the microphone key turns on. When I press the microphone button, the FN key lights up. And finally, when I hold down FN + esc, the mute light turns on.
Not sure if it was a coincidence, the time is usually auto set with the internet time. However, the time had also changed and was wrong. I changed it back, but the indicator lights on the keyboard are still wrong.
Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks

  • Problem with Displayport and M11x

Okay so I have an M11x R3 laptop running Arch x86_64.  I have an issue I just got a Displayport to DVI and Displayport to VGA adapters.  I have tried HDMI but it doesn't show up with xrandr -q command.  I was wondering what I should do because it shows my VGA1 disconnected even when the DisplayPort adapter is connected to the monitor and to the laptop?

I can use optirun or primusrun I have both installed.  I have run both optirun and primusrun with the xrandr queries to see about detecting a secondary display with the Displayport or hdmi and nothing!  Any helps, tips, tricks, comments would be greatly appreciated because I am designing an Android application for my work and could use my secondary display working for more screen space.
    **EDIT #1**
    What I am currently running:
nvidia bumblebee/primus-git driver from AUR 313.18-1 and I am going to update my git repos of lib32-primus-git and primus-git to see if that doesn't help...
    Also using 3.7.4-1-ARCH kernel.
    **EDIT #2**
Okay so I have found out that the HDMI/VGA1 are both I guess hooked up to the GT 540M card which means that it won't show up without bumblebee/primus working.  So I have tried using the Bumblebee how-to guide on github how to setup an external secondary display and well it really didn't work well at all!
    First I did this:
I removed from /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf KeepUnusedXServer = false to = true.  I also have removed the UseEDID, and Option "AutoAddDevices" "false", from /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia.  Also have tried to setup an export path before running commands:
    export DISPLAY=:8 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/nvidia-bumblebee:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    optirun -vv true
    [ 711.059889] [DEBUG]Reading file: /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf

  • HP Envy m6 trackpad problems

    Hi there.
I am hoping you guys can give me a little bit of help.
I purchased a new HP Envy m6 from Best Buy in May. For the first couple of weeks everything was fine, but after that the trackpad stopped working completly. It wasn't that big of a deal because I dont use the trackpad that often, I use a wireless mouse. However, In June the hard drive completly crashed and wouldn't load at all. I took it back to Best Buy and they sent it to HP to get the Hard drive replaced. I went back home to the UK and my fiance picked up the computer and it has been sitting doing nothing since coming back from the workshop. I turned it on for the first time when I got back to the States, and the trackpad still does not work. I have been through the control panel and everything on there seems to be fine, all the other USB ports work fine, the keyboard works fine, but the trackpad, no matter whar I do, will not work at all. It is like it has been disconnected.
Have you heard of this problem before and if so how do i fix it?
    Luke

    Tonkaturn,
    Welcome to the HP Forum!
    You might try the following:
    Perform the Hard Reset
As soon as you power on the notebook, repeatedly click the ESC key to bring up the Startup Menu
Select F10 to launch the BIOS menu
Depending on your BIOS, you will click F5 or F9 to load the default settings – then use the arrow keys to Select “Yes” and then click “Enter”
Press F10 to save the Settings – then use the arrow keys to Select “Yes” and click “Enter”
There are a few "software" fixes available to sort this.
Take a look at the following; see if you find anything of use.
Find, open, and read the files named:
    Fix TouchPad / ClickPad
    Enable / Disable TouchPad
If all efforts fail to dislodge the TouchPad from its eternal sleep, then you may have to think about calling HP Technical Support (which we are not).  As sad as it is to contemplate, the hardware may be at fault.  You still have warrant on the unit that should include hardware repairs should it be necessary.
    Worldwide Support Portal
    Contact HP - Worldwide
Contact HP – USA - Phone Assistance
Warranty Required – USA and Canada
    USA – Contact HP // Self-Help – Email - Chat
What if you REALLY are not ready to make the Call to HP?
If the thought of sending the computer in for another repair causes undue stress, you might try backing up everything reinstalling the Operating System.  Should you have Windows 8 on that computer, you have some good options, including using a Custom Refresh.
The Custom Refresh is discussed in the file named:
    Windows 8 Features – A Quick Tour
If you do Refresh (restore the system) and THAT doesn't fix it, then you can make that call to HP.
Good Luck!  I hope this helps you resolve the issue with that stubborn TouchPad.
    Kind Regards,
    Dragon-Fur
