X240 Doesn't Shutdown

I recently bought an X240 and have this shutdown problems.  Before it was caused by Norton anti-virus so I uninstalled it, then the laptop was working fine.  Now, after some Windows updte, it doesn't shutdown again.  What is wrong with this laptop?
Thanks.

  • Firefox will close when i close the window but the process doesn't shutdown ever since i had updated to FF25

I am running Win. 8.1 and had no issues with FF 24. Since upgrading to FF 25, firefox will appear closed when i close the window but the process doesn't shutdown. I have to go into Task Manager to end the process. I can then launch it again.

    SOLUTION (possible).
Hi all. I had this problem as well. I currently run FF26. A week or so ago, out of nowhere FF wouldn't exit - the window would close but firefox.exe process would keep running in the background using about 50% of CPU. Not sure if it's connected, but just prior to that I clicked on a link on Facebook that looked like spam website, nothing happened, site loaded (sort of, all I saw was a msg - Please Wait...) but nothing happened, I have Eset antivirus and it monitors network traffic and files for viruses, so maybe it prevented my PC getting infected...
So, I had this problem for a few days, was searching the net for solutions, but nothing seem to help. Then, just out of luck I did something that WORKED!
Here's what I did. I noticed that svchost.exe was using a lot of CPU alongside with FF. I ran ProcessExplorer to see what might be connected to this process, the list was long and I didn't have any idea where to start, so what I did was - Right click on svchost process, choose Debug and dismiss the warning. In a few seconds svchost process quit and after that FF started closing properly.
I had to re-enable all my plugins and themes I disabled prior, I also lost my history and preferences which I trashed in the process of searching for solution. But heck, it worked, hopefully for good. Now if someone could point out the real cause of this and fix it for everyone - that would be great. Cheers!

  • My iMac doesn't shutdown (except in a Bootcamp Partition like XP)

HI Friends!, here is my problem: sometimes, when i try to shutdown my iMac with some applications open, it stucks on the "Blue" Screen with the grey roulette for an infinite time... It doesn't go down, even it goes to the screensaver mode, and doesn't shutdown...
This doesn't happen if I manually close all aplications before shut it down, or if I try to shutdown in a Bootcamp partition (Windows XP for example), in the two case, the iMac shut down well :S
    Why does this happen ?
Thankss and sorry for my bad english -.-

There are a couple things I can think of. First of all, are you using FileVault? This can cause a shutdown hang if it is enabled on your user account (personal experience). Try disabling filevault via the Security preference pane.
Another is to repair disk permissions. Open Disk Utility and click on your boot volume, then go to the First Aid tab and click "repair disk permissions". The third thing you can try is repairing the disk itself. Using your OS X install CD/DVD, start up and hold the C key until you see the installer. Click "Installer" then Disk Utility, then click your boot volume and then "Repair Disk" on the first aid tab.

  • Init 5 doesn't shutdown Solaris 8 Sparc system

    Hi,
I am trying to bring down the Solaris 8 Sparc system using the command # init 5 but it doesn't do anything whereas the command # shutdown brings down the system. What could be the problem of init 5 command not functioning.
    Thanks & Regards

ok, i should have caught this earlier
looks like, your program is not able to start because of not finding a symbol called __res_state. This symbol is found in /usr/lib/libresolv.so.2
the most likely reason is that u probably do not have some required patches installed
if u r open to install the sun patch cluster , then that is probably the best way to go
    visit the below url
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/show.pl?target=patches/patch-access
and look for solaris 9 (around 180 mb of size) download this patch cluster and install them in single user mode
btw, when u have installed the jes version of web server,it is already running only in 32 bit.
    hope this helps

  • Computer doesn't shutdown

I sometimes get this when shutting down.
    /etc/rc.shutdown:line 153: 2078 Segmentation fault /sbin/poweroff -d -f -h -i
There shutdown stops and I have to kill it with the powerbutton.
It doesn't happen often but it happens.

    Try:
    pacman -Syy
    pacman -Suu
    pacman -S kernel26 kernel26-firmware
If it doesn't work, try to replace your rc.shutdown with the default one, from initscripts package.

  • Shutdown doesn't shutdown

I have an annoying issue on my SunBlade 1000 running Solaris 9. and whenever I need to reboot/shutdown this box (which doesn't happen often) I run into it.
When I use the shutdown command I see the warning message and that is it. The machine keeps running along merily. Using init doesn't help either.
So far the only way I fount to shut this box down is using:
    sync
    sync
    halt
But I'd like to close things a bit cleaner. Anyone got a suggestion what might be causing this?
    thanx

The "sync; sync; halt" commands use to be fairly common back in the SunOS 4.x days. I wouldn't recommend it now. Although it will sync filesystems, it certainly won't shutdown any applications gracefully.
The shutdown command (depending on the options) indirectly runs through the scripts in your various /etc/rc*.d directories. The default run level in solaris is typically run level three. shutdown will step you down from this level by issuing running calling the /etc/rc2 script with a stop option.
My first suggestion would be to call this script manually.
    /etc/rc2 stop
-This script will then go through the /etc/rc2.d directory and run each script which starts with a capital K (which stands for kill) in alphabetical/numerical order.
Your system could be hanging on one of these scripts. If it continues, try the next run level stop script.
    /etc/rc1 stop
    /etc/rc0 stop
Even if this doesn't show you what is screwing up shutdown, it'll be a much cleaner way to shutdown your system.
    Good luck!

  • X240 - Extremely long shutdown!

My X240 takes forever to shutdown (anywhere up to 2 minutes long). It's running Windows 8.1, and the boot drive is a Samsung 840 PRO SSD.
In contrast, my Y510p at home shuts down almost instantly ( around 5 seconds). This is ridiculous - it takes so long that between trips/meetings, I can't wait for it to shut down, unnecessarily draining battery. This is making the laptop very difficult to use.
    Does anyone know why? Thanks.

A few of the errors/warnings I noticed are below. Each has several occurences. There are more errors & warnings, but perhaps these may tell something?
    * ERROR: Session "ReadyBoot" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188
    * ERROR: Collaborative processor power controls on processor 1 in group 0 are disabled due to a firmware problem. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated firmware.
    * WARNING: The description for Event ID 27 from source e1iexpress cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
Also, I should probably mention at this stage that my factory installed M2 SSD (Toshiba 24GB) is screwed, its been like this for a while though. (This is a known issue with the X240 apparently.) I don't know if this has anything to do with my problem.

  • Leopard doesn't shutdown sometimes....

    OK....
but when happend how can I shutdown the system? I can do it by the power button only (pushing it for some seconds). I tried to use the command SHUTDOWN on the terminal but the system say I'm not a superuser.

  • HP Slate7 4600 Tablet doesn't shutdown when charging

Greetings have the following problem, Tablet won't shutdown when connected to charge. I press the power button and the screen goes off, then after 2 s it turns on and the HP logo appears. Android doesn't boot either. It happened after:- Loading the last firmware update, it worked fine, got microSD back, but the system hang up constantly.- Could get a Recovery menu but it hang up and couldn't finish the task so I turned it off. And since then I have the problem, the system won't boot, only the HP logo shows.Any ideas about this problem? Thanks in advance. Old tablet, support is not an option.

    Hey ,
Welcome to the HP forums. I understand your tablet will no longer boot. One thing I am not clear on is if this only happens when connected to the charger or if it is permanently stuck in the boot loop. Please try the following. 1. Download the update.zip for your device and copy the file to the root directory of an empty micro-SD card (at least 1 GB, FAT 32 format). Do not unzip this file. You can find the update.zip for your device here: HP - Drivers & Downloads.  NOTE: You will need the exact model number to locate the correct package. There are multiple update.zip recovery images available. Ensure you select the correct download for your region. If your tablet does not boot after attempting to update you may need to try both the KitKat and JellyBean images. For information on finding your product or model number click here: Finding Your HP Product Model Number.
    2. Fully charge the tablet and then disconnect the power from the device.
    3. Power off the device.
If your tablets micro-SD slot is on the side or bottom of your tablet skip to step 5.  4a. Place the tablet on a flat surface, display panel side down, with the release notch towards you.
NOTE: Before positioning the tablet with the display panel facing down, make sure the work surface is clear of any foreign objects. Failure to follow this caution can result in damage to the display panel assembly.
4b. Remove the back cover. Use the release notch to remove the back cover.
4c. Insert the micro-SD memory card into the reader slot.
4d. Reverse the procedure detailed above to install the back cover and continue to step 6. 5. Insert the micro-SD card into the micro-SD card reader.
    6. Press and hold the volume up button and power button at the same time.
    7. When the HP logo appears on the screen, release all the buttons.
    8. When the Android system recovery menu appears, use the volume down button to highlight "apply update from external storage".
    9. Press the power button to validate "apply update from external storage".
    10. Use the volume down button to highlight the software recovery file, update.zip.
    11. Press the power button to select the update.zip file and launch the recovery.
NOTE: Wait until the entire recovery process finishes. The device might seem unresponsive at times (multiple reboots and black screens) when it is performing the update. If this does not resolve the issue please call our technical support: Phone Assist Worldwide.
    Thanks.

  • Why does firefox "close" when I close the window but the process doesn't shutdown even with the upgrades since problem was reported.since i had updated to FF25

Frequently after I have been viewing numerous sites on firefox, when I close down the last window and try to reopen firefox, I am told that the program is already running and needs to be shut down. Using Task Manager is not useful, since task manager doesn't show the program as up and running. The only way to get the program to close so it can be used for a different subject is to reboot the computer. This is happening 10 - 12 times a week now, and gradually getting worse. This closes out everything I have open, making it necessary to save all opened files BEFORE I reboot, and then going back to reopen all of them. None of the other questions I've seem point to this particular quirk in the problem.

This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up.

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the
issue may be caused by the clear history settings. It was suppose
to have been fixed in v30.
Press the '''Alt''' or '''F10''' key to bring up the tool bar.
    Followed by;
    Windows; '''Tools > Options'''
    Linux; '''Edit > Preferences'''
    Mac; ''application name'' '''> Preferences'''
    Then '''Privacy'''.
The button next to '''History''', select '''Use Custom Settings'''.
At the bottom of the page, turn on '''Clear History When Firefox Closes.'''
At the far right, press the '''Settings''' button. Turn on ONLY '''Cache''' and
'''Form And Search History''' leaving the others off.

  • My imac doesn't shutdown gracefully, what gives?

I have 24 in Intel based IMAC (2009), it doesn't seem to shut down completely when I chose shut down command.  It stops at a skyblue screen with spinning wheel.  I have to hold the power button continuously to see it go off.  I'd like to know if there is any recommended software based cleanup I can perform without having to take it to a shop.

What all USB or Firewire devices do you have attached?

  • Systemd sometimes doesn't shutdown

I have Mate desktop and Slim installed:
    halt_cmd            /sbin/systemctl poweroff -i
    reboot_cmd        /sbin/systemctl reboot -i
like this, when I request shutdown all applications exit and then slim restart and shutdown is stopped ?
However when I add --force to this command it looks like everything works; but is there a way to send SIGTERM and wait for all processes to end ? because with force they will be killed immediately with SIGKILL and won't wait for them.
First i thought some application suppressed shutdown so I added the -i to ignore all inhibitors but no luck.
    Thanks  in advance.

WonderWoofy wrote:You need to provide more information.  What is making the shutdown/reboot fail?
I'm sorry but If I knew what is causing the problem I wouldn't ask here.
hussam wrote:Do you see a message along the lines of "application something did not stop" at the end of the shutdown process?
    No, nothing
Edit: Now I noticed that there's "watchdog didn't stop", also there are some other entries but it happens so quickly that I couldnt read that correctly. I messed the watchdog first time because Iof the slim that kept my tty and didn't allow me to see messages. Is there a way I can log those messages and read them later ?
