X240 - Thinkpad Ultra dock Problem with external monitors

I have tried to connect my two external monitors to the dock (the one connected to the vga port) but it was only able to detect one of them (though at a low resolution) and not the other. i have tried using a replicator to connect the screen to the dvi and the usb  ports but nothing seemed to work
Did anyone face the same problem and how were they able to resolve it - any recommendation for a port replicator brand / usb to vga display adapter to use that would work?
Thanks

Seems that there is no solution now, because DP MST should be implemented in Linux: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72795

I have Lenovo X240 two Dell monitors connected to DP1 and DP2 of the Thinkpad Ultra Dock 90w.
Now it works only in next modes:
Two connected monitors works in clone mode (each 1920x1080).

  • X240 (Win 8.1) w/ Ultra Dock and two external monitors connected via DisplayPort problem

I'm having trouble making this combination work. This Ultra Dock does have two DP connectors, computer sees both external monitors (HP ZR24w) but I cannot get any picture on both at the same time using DP. Sometimes one display does work, but that is not always working.
When I connect same monitors via VGA/DSUB and DP (with Lenovo DPtoDVI converter) I can get this to work - both same time - , but I'd prefer them both digital and both native DP as both monitors do have that port.
Ultra Dock does already have the latest firmware and this problem seems to not relate to the flickering problem with T440 etc. X240 is also running latest UEFI/BIOS and I've also tried latest Intel Beta display driver, no effect.

Let me start by saying that the internal and both external monitors work simultaneously. However, getting to that state is the problem.
I can boot successfully with the laptop in the dock with 1) just the internal monitor, or 2) the internal and one external monitor connected.
However, if I try to boot with both monitors connected via DVI, the following happens:
Windows logon screen appears -- but there is no cursor on the screen
I enter the password and the login continues for 30-60 seconds, then
Blue screen SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION for nvlddmkm.sys with STOP x0000003B
Lenovo has replaced the dock with no change in behavior.
    Drivers and BIOS are current.
Most recent change was to set BIOS so Win 7 automatically detects Nvidia Optimus.
At this point, my best workaround is to disconnect one external monitor whenever I need to reboot, and then connect it again after everything is runing. Not terrible... but it really shouldn't be necessary. Any suggestions?
If you want to drive the monitors in the manner stated, the BIOS Display property must be set to Discrete and the auto detection below it must be disabled.

  • Problems with External Monitor In XP

Ok, I've got a huge problem with XP on Bootcamp.
I've recently got a Samsung TV which I can use as an external monitor. This works absolutely fine when I'm using OSX, recognizes the TV and can use it as a second screen.
When I try to use the same monitor in Windows under Bootcamp, it works as an extension of my desktop, but not able to mirror my desktop. I want to do this so I can play my games on a large screen instead of a small one.
I've trawled the forums on this kind of problem and found a few answers. However, many of them talk about the ATI graphics drivers. I've downloaded the appropriate drivers and the control center from the website, but to no avail.
People have also said about going into display properties: settings: advanced and selecting the ATI tab. I have no ATI tab.
Also with the Catalyst Control Center, when I try to run it, it tells me that I dont have permission to change the settings and to contact my administrator, even though I am the administrator.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can solve this?
By the way. I'm connecting the external monitor via the DVI on my Macbook Pro to the HDMI connection on the TV.
    Many thanks
    Chris

My logic tells me, if you are using a new MBP the way it's designed is that even if you are plugged in at times it will go in battery mode for a few minutes in order to prevent battery damage, than it will recharge. This happens in the background without notice. However, within this couple of minutes you might notice your display screen to sleep because it is setup to sleep in 1 minute or less in the preference under battery mode. So within that window you might have your screen go blank since the entire process takes a lot more than a minute. I hope this helps.

  • Inkscape/X11 Problems with external Monitor

    Hello,
I´m using Inkscape to create vector art on my MacBook Pro.
Since my update to Mavericks I´m having problems with X11. I have the version 2.7.5 of XQuartz installed currently.
After some troubles, Inkscape opens up just fine.
But I cannot drag Inkscape over to my external monitor, which is based to the right of my notebook.
    Inkscape simply disappears.
I´m quite the DAU ;-) with Computers and Software, so it would be nice, if you can help me.
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Best,
    Sonja

How about trying a native Mac app like iDraw http://www.indeeo.com/idraw/

  • Dock Problem with External Display

I have a macbook hooked up to an external monitor. I made the external display the primary display so it has the menubar and main desktop, but for some reason the dock wont move from the macbook's display, which is the secondary one. I tried restarting the dock, using killall in terminal and restarting, unplugging and replugging, switching to mirroring and back again, and all sorts of other things. My friend has the exact same setup and his works fine; what's going on here? Thanks so much

I was able to fix this problem on my iMac using your suggestion. It appears that if the external display is arranged to touch either the left or right side of the Mac display, then the two displays are handled as a single desktop. "Left" places the dock on the left side of the combined desktop, "right" places it on the right.
When I changed the arrangement so that the external display was touching only the top or the bottom of the Mac display, "left" and "right" became the left and right of the Mac display, and my dock is back where I like it.

  • Problem with external monitor

    Hello all,
did you ever use an external monitor with the mac book pro? Once disconnected the external monitor, the Mac freezes and becomes unresponsive. Do you know why?
    thank you very much
    Fulvio

I have the same problem with my external Acer monitor, starting today. Suddenly, when connected to my MacBook, the Acer monitor says "Input Not Supported". If the Acer monitor is not connected, it says, correctly, "signal not detected".
When the external monitor is connected, my MacBook can see it, has a display preference for it, lets me change resolution, etc, but the Acer monitor simply says "Input Not Supported". This just started today, and I did the system upgrade yesterday. Is there a connection?
I've tried the usual fiddling with connections, rebooting, everything.

  • Leopard 10.5.2 problems with external monitor

Since I installed 10.5.2 on my macbook pro I cannot have a external monitor Dell 3007 WFP connected to my laptop when starting the computer. The screen will only show up on my laptop but only my background picture but nothing else so I have to perform each time a forced exit. However if I start my computer with my external computer unplugged the laptop works fine and if I then connect my Dell monitor everything works fine. However the closed lid mechanism is not working either anymore. My computer goes to sleep if you press an external keyboard the Dell screen comes on for few seconds but then goes to sleep again. I never had this problem with leopard 10.5.1. Does anyone known an answer to this problem.

I have exactly the same problem. After 4 hours on the phone over 2 calls to Apple Care, they finally let me know that this is an issue with 10.5.2. They said they are working on a fix that would come out with a future update, and offered the workaround of reinstalling Leopard without 10.5.2 update.
They sent me this link about reinstalling without losing files and settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8177.html
It's very frustrating, and I hope they find a fix for it soon!

  • Shutdown problems with external monitor

    Hello.
I'm running Mavericks on my 2012 Macbook Air, running in clamshell mode with an Asus display connected from the Air's Thunderbolt port to the displays DVI port.
My Macbook will not shutdown, unless I disconnect the external monitor.  This did not happen with previous OS versions.

What adapter are you using to connect the MacBook miniDVI to the VGA input on the monitor? Is it the Apple adapter made specifically for the MacBook or possibly an older version? Double check that you have the correct adapter, just to rule that out as the potential culprit.
Make sure you are using the recommended resolution and refresh rates for your monitor, from: http://www.viewsonic.com/pdf/userguides/va1903wb-2ugeng.pdf
    Resolution Recommended and supported
    1440 x 900 @ 60, 75 Hz (60 recommended)
    1280 x 1024 @ 60, 75 Hz
    1024 x 768 @ 60, 70, 72, 75 Hz
    800 x 600 @ 56, 60, 72, 75 Hz
    640 x 480 @ 60, 75 Hz
    720 x 400 @ 70 Hz
other settings may show up in the Displays, System Preference, even though the monitor can't handle it. Try the different refresh rates to see if that makes any difference. When you have the Mac set up, then use the on-screen controls to auto adjust the monitor, I think this is the Auto Image or Auto set function.
I use a Samsung 204B, 20" at 1600x1200, and sometimes I get some brief flickering when first waking from sleep, but it works fine other than that.

  • Problem with external monitor when using Windows XP on MBP

    Hi All,
I just got a 15.4" MBP, and put Windows XP Home on it using BootCamp. Anyway, the monitor sits above the MBP's screen, as shown below (set up this way through display props, not sure if it matters):
    [ ] External Monitor
    [ ] MBP Screen
Anyway, some program windows won't drag to the external monitor (Dell 2007FP connected via DVI). An example is AIM. Any idea what it could be? The window shows for about 1/2" on the top monitor, and then it sticks, even though the cursor will continue to move upwards.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Mike

    Hello Gray:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
It appears from this knowledge base article, that you need a USB keyboard to use Bootcamp:

  • Problems with External Monitor on a Laptop

I've been having a weird problem when I hook my exernal display up to my laptop.  It's a Samsung monitor, don't know the exact model number, and for the most part it works fine.  But I have an issue when the display goes to sleep.  I have my laptop set to put the display to sleep every fifteen minutes.  Sometimes when I wake the display, the display will blow everything on the screen up so that it's huge (like 10x normal size or something).  If I then put the computer to sleep and wake it, everything goes back to normal, but all open windows and applications are moved way out of place from where I usually keep them, often barely on the screen.
I've never had this issue with a laptop/display setup before, and I was wondering if anyone had any idea of what might be causing it, or how I could fix it?  I feel like there's probably a setting somewhere I'm just not thinking of.  Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • T520 problems with external monitor resolution

    Hi,
I am on permanent hold right now waiting for a Lenovo tech support rep, so I thought I would just post my issue here. I just purchased a Dell ultrasharp U2713HM monitor and am trying to connect it to my Lenovo T520. Sometimes it sees the monitor and sometimes it doesn't, but that isn't my main issue. The monitor is supposed to be 2560x1440, but all of the resolution settings are greyed out. I know the Lenovo can support it because my last monitor was a Samsung SyncMaster that supported 2560x1440, and it was beautiful (beautiful until the monitor blew up).
I have been on the phone with both Dell and Lenovo, and so far nobody has been able to resolve the issue. I upgraded the NVIDIA graphics card driver (NVS4200M) to the most recent version (310.90) as suggested by Dell, and I switched out the VGA cable for the DVI-D cable (connected to a Dual Link Adapter), as suggested by Lenovo. It stlil isn't working.
I could use any suggestions. I am not techy at all, so this is pretty frustrating. Thank you!!

Okay, another update. I changed the graphics thingy in the bios from NVIDIA optimus to discrete based on someone's suggestion, but that did not work, either with the displayport cable OR the dual link adapter. I also just spoke with the Dell tech, and he basically told me to take it to a shop to see if they could figure it out. In other words, I am out of ideas, and I think I will just return the monitor unless anyone out there has any other suggestoins! Thank you!
Just to be clear, are you saying you have a cable with DisplayPort on both ends and your tried that with the default BIOS setting (Optimus), then Discrete, then Integrated and it didn't work on either of those three settings?

  • M92Z like monitor display port in connect to DVI thinkpad ultra dock

I´m coneccting a thinkpad ultra dock DVI to M92Z display port in, but not work, the monitor is in black. I´m using a DVI cable and a DVI to Display port adapter (43N9160).

DVI (computer) to ADC (display) adapters are only for LCDs, not CRTs. Most do not pass trough the analog video signals needed for a CRT, and do not provide enough power. I have seen reports that the Gefen DVI to ADC adapter
<http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1203> does pass the video signals, but the power supply gets VERY hot when running a CRT. You could replace the supply with a bigger one. I think you need 28V 4A.

  • ThinkPad Ultra Dock - 90W US 40A20090US Dual Video Vga port dropping

We have a new lenovo 440 with this docking station.   There are two monitors hooked to both the DVD and VGA output.
Everything works most of the time but every now and then the VGA monitor goes black and wont come back until you undock and redock the laptop.   The DVD monitor continues to work  its just the monitor attached to the VGA output.
Any thoughts as to what the issue could be?

    Go to Solution.

    Hi all,
thanks for posting. I believe you issue could be related to the solution I have below. Could you try the solution below.
NB: Make sure your system is docked to the ThinkPad Pro Dock or Ultra Dock with at least one external monitor connected.
The firmware for the DisplayPort hub in the dock needs to be updated :
If the display on an external monitor connected to a ThinkPad Pro Dock or a ThinkPad Ultra dock is flickering or going blank, download the firmware (fwdphb01.exe) from the following URL:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=HT081248
    Downloading:
A window will pop up asking you to Run or Save the file. Select Save.
Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and select Save. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully.
Make sure to be logged on with an Administrator account.
Make sure your system is docked to the ThinkPad Pro Dock or Ultra Dock with at least one external monitor connected.
    Installing file:
    Close all applications.
Double click the downloaded file: fwdphb01.exe
It will display the current firmware version and the firmware version to be installed.
If the current firmware version on your dock is older than 2.17.000, then click the Update firmware button.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete installation and restart the dock with following action:
Shutdown the system, unplug the AC adapter from the dock, and wait for 5 seconds. Then, re-attach the AC adapter and power on.
    6. If your docking station already updated, then click the Cancel Update button to exit.
Hope this helps and please do post back.
    Regards
