X300: Partition Magic 8 needs Windos XP safe mode

Hi I have the following setup: ThinkPad X300 6477-1RG, Win XP, and I want to use Partition Magic 8 to add extra partitions on my disc. Partition magic comes back with the notorious error#27, during start-up, which just means that there are other processes running locking disc access. See for example here: http://www.mcmcse.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=+15682
After reading all the relevant information available on the web to this problem it boils down to the question how to start-up in Win XP 'safe mode', since, without a floppy drive one cannot start-up PM8 during booting!
So here is my question: How can I start-up XP in "safe-mode" or in an equivalent mode without all the ThinkVantage recovery etc. processes coming in my way??? Disabeling all processes and automatic start-ups from msconfig is not sufficient!!!
Many thanks for any hints on this issue!

I've had Thinkpads since they were introduced and have been using Partition Magic to create logical drives for ten years without any problems. However with my new X300,  I ran into the same Error 27 - Cannot Lock Drive.
First a little review about Partition Magic.  There's two steps.  First, run the Wizard to make the instructions to create the partitions, and then in Step 2 the system reboots and writes the changes in DOS before WIndows loads..  That's where the Error 27 pops up.
There's definitely a problem with F8 bringing up Safe Mode, which seriously needs to be addressed.  I got Safe Mode one time in about 25-30 attempts, and don't know what the secret was.  If you press too early or too long, you get "Stuck Key - hit F1."  If you hit too late, it doesn't go into Safe Mode and also aborts the PM writing in DOS.  (Press any key to abort.)
What finally worked:
In Run / msconfig / check BOOT.INI / SAFEBOOT - but don’t hit Restart until the PM Wizard is ready
Run the PM Wizard
At this point there are two “Restart” options - one from Wizard, the other from the System Configuration Utility - I don’t know which I hit.  However, when it rebooted, it successfully wrote the instructions without any errors.
Also, as to the PM Wizard, I choose NOT to “move” the Lenovo Service partition, although that was the “recommended” move.  This is because the "recommended" move required the Service partition to be moved, which I figured might not be desirable since the Lenovo configuration was designed to protect the Service partition.  I have no idea whether this was necessary.
What also did not work:  Booting with PM's Recovery Diskettes did not work because the PM Wizard did not offer the option of creating partitions, only moving and resizing them.
Thanks to Bananaman for the reminder about BOOT.INI / SAFEBOOT.
Now we have to flatten the problem with F8 -- BOOT.INI / SAFEBOOT is useless if you can't boot your machine.

  • Help! MacBook Pro only boots in Safe Mode and runs extremely slow (bonus: happened in Brazil and there are no Apple stores here - I need you guys!)

It's a MBP mid 2010. Last year it had some problems and an Apple authorised shop changed the HD and upgraded the OS from Snow Leopard to Lion. After that it seemed fine. Recently it started getting very slow and apps (e.g. Chrome, Flash) would crash. At some point it seemed stuck so I gave it a hard shutdown - bad idea. After that it would only boot in Safe Mode. I ran repar disk and repair permissions from the Disk Utility and it booted normally again but extremely slow. I upgraded to OS X 10.8.2, but didn't solve it. I tried booting with Command D to have a hardware diagnostic - it wouldn't boot and now it only boots in Safe Mode.
All data is backed and I have an external HD (but not an OS X Disc). Ready to anything. Help please!

Also you can perform #1 and #2 as these occur before Safe Mode, so you just reboot again with Shift key if you need to enter Safe Mode again.
At this point it sounds like your hard drive is dying or some sort of other hardware issue which I can only advise this.
Try to install OS X on a external drive and boot from it, if it's fine then you know your internal boot drive is dying.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
You can replace your internal drive yourself.
OtherWorld Computing is pretty good about providing drives and tool kits to perform that function yourself.

Hello there rgalvin!: that's because safe mode is used for solving problems with your computer
Windows safe mode only installs the necessary drivers need to run safe mode itself
that's why you can also do it step by step one driver at a time until you isolate the offending one

  • Partition Magic Error 110 on new Thinkpad W500

I have a new W500 that (automatically) configured to WinXP right out of the box (which is the OS I want).
After getting the OS in order (updates, customizations, firewall, anti-virus, firmware updates, etc.) I installed my PowerQuest Partition Magic v8 (and applied the patch v8.01).
The HD was configured as almost entirely used by C:, with some 5g allocated to the 'hidden' partition.
I'm trying to resize C: down to about 25g, in order to be able to created new partitions, and I am unable to do so.
I'm first receiving Error 110 "Partition table number of sectors is inconsistent" and PM is asking me if I want to "fix" this situation.  I have NOT YET allowed PM to proceed.  After that, it attempts to still "run", but then I get some other errors and the program closes.
I ran the reporting/inquiry program and it gave me a few other errors on the partitions (i.e. Errors 105, 106 108, and 109).
From what I've seen on the internet, there seems to be some problem(s) with PMv8 and Vista, but I am running XP.
    Has anyone seen this before?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hello,
our mods here do favour it, too.
And member TomTom in my sugested thread has done it simply and fast.
There is NO problem partitioning the drive, though you have to be careful not to modify/ erase the last special partition.
R&R files are kept on the C: drive so there is a special partition at the end of the drive,
that is used for booting before the OS.
If you damagethis one, theres is no more Blue Button functionality.
Please, first burn your recovery DVD´s and safe your C:/SWTool folder, if something goes
wrong you can easily restore your system with your software.
    Regards
    Andreas

    Turn it off.
Start it up again and (at the sound of the chime) press and hold the command and the R keys, hold them down until Recovery loads. When it does you will select Disk Utility and you should be on the First Aid tab when it opens, if you are not please select it. Then select the partition (in the side bar, 2nd entry on the list, see picture).
Yours is probably called Macintosh HD.
Once you have selected it go to the lower righthand corner of the First Aid dialog and press Repair Disk.
This will take 10 minutes approximately. Post back when it is finished and tell me what it says.

  • Hello, I need help.  Find is crashing constantly, even in safe mode

Good evening.  I have a term paper to write, and I have several more seasons of the West Wing to finish.  With finder constantly crashing I am able to only get one of my objectives complete.
I am not getting any warning, or message that it crashed.  But as I try and use it I watch as finder reboots itself. (once per minute, plus or minus 30 seconds).  All of my files are in google drive via finder, and that may somehow be related.
Also of interest is that finder is crashing even while in safe mode.
Also, earlier today my time capsule stopped putting out any internet feed for 30 minutes.  Then it randomly started working.  I had even called the internet provider to have them diagnose why the modem wasn't working... and they told me that it was the router!  Perhaps the two are related somehow?
    Help!

Make sure you have a backup.
    I don't think it's your router.
If the Finder crashes persist in safe mode that means that the problem is in OS X itself.
The next diagnostic step would be to create a test user account in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
if Finder is stable in the test user account then you know that the problem is within your user account.
if the problem is within your user account then you can either
try to fix it (boot into your recovery partition {command R at restart}, and use disk utility to repair your HD and permissions)
copy your documents over to the new account and use the new account instead. And delete the previous account.
If the problem is not your user account, then it is in OS X itself (above the level of your user account)
try repairing your HD and permissions from within the recovery partition
if that doesn't work, reinstall OS X over your current installation with the Mavericks combo updater (your post does not say what version of OS X you are running but I'm assuming it's Mavericks because that's what discussion you're in). OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo)
I would avoid Google Drive and use Dropbox instead.

  • I am new to Macs and, although I like it, I still don't understand it's behavior. When would you need to provide the administrative password at boot time? Safe Mode?

    Background...
I joined the Mac bandwagon about 2 months ago. I am still getting used to it, but like it so far. Last week, I activated a new Iphone on my Imac. I needed to key in my userid and password. 3 days later, my itunes account was hacked into. My itunes information was scrambled. My itunes email, home address, and password were changed. Also, they didn't use my credit card which was attached to my account to make any purchases (they deleted my card and put someone else's card on my account to buy $100 worth of gift cards). I didn't receive any emails from Apple that my password, or email were changed, but I did get 2 receipts from the Itunes Store identifiying the purchases. Apple support fixed everything, but couldn't offer any explanation on what happened, other than to say my account was "modified". I don't like coincidences.
I freely admit that I didn't do enough to protect my login credentials as I used the same userid and password on multiple sites (since corrected). I still don't know how my account was accessed. I started to wonder if there may have been a key logger installed on my Imac without my knowing it. I am pretty careful with installing software and have purchase about 15 applications, all either from the itunes store, or from other reputable sources. I have never made any in-app purchases.
I understand that to install a key logger you would need to supply the admin password, which brings me to my question....
About 4 weeks ago, my wife was using the Imac on facebook. While she was there, the Imac experienced a hard crash. We had to do push and hold the button on the back of Imac to get it to shut down and reboot. When it came up, it required the admin password, and dropped me into a mode where it wouldn't recognize the external disk drive which was attached via USB. I needed to restart the machine and everything appeared to be normal. I assumed that this was Apples version of "safe" mode, but now I am not so sure. Could a key logger have been installed during this event? Is this expected behavior after a hard reset?
I have McAfee for Mac installed and it hasn't detected any threats, but McAfee is pretty wishy-washy on it's ability to detect key loggers. I am thinking about Macscan or Little Snitch. I would do a reinstall of the OS, if I only knew how.
    Any help?

your itunes accoutn have nothing to d with your computer
you can go to any computer with internet access in the world and
login into your itunes account if you have the appleID and password
the itunes account is placed on apples itunes servers

  • I haven't been able to get on firefox for weeks! it crashes on opening within seconds. i reinstalled hoping that it needed to be updated but that didn't work. it won't even open in safe mode. i am desperate...

all of a sudden a few weeks ago i cannot get on firefox. it crashes immediately upon startup every time no matter what and crash reporter arrives. i have researched all the articles and followed their suggestions. i installed the newest version of firefox and still get the same results. i can't even open firefox in safe mode. i dont' know what else to try and really need my favorite browser back and all my bookmarks and passwords...

since i exhausted every angle throughout january and early february, i really can't pinpoint what made the difference today but... IT'S WORKING NOW! firefox had been deleted from my computer for a few weeks now so with renewed determination i searched every single folder on my entire hard drive and found 3 random files with mozilla or part of the word mozilla in them and deleted them. i shut down the computer and restarted it a few hours later. i downloaded firefox 10 (even higher version than the one i was updating to a month ago) from google chrome and installed it. so thank you for your input and effort to help!

  • Windows Stuck in Safe Mode - mouse won't work - need my data...

New Mac User, well two months of trying to get it to opperate correctly. Unbelievable! I've re-installed XP SP2 too many times to count, finally had it up and thought it was running fine for the last week, then I went over to the Mac OS tried accessing windows through boot camp, it shut down the Mac OS, then when I tried to go back to boot windows directly, I received the damning <windows root> \system32\hal.dll file is missing or corrupt - again.
I've gone through a bunch of posts, tried a number of the instructions, and now have a worse issue, my computer is now stuck in safe mode with Windows, by instructions, here, I'd disabled everything for start up in Configuration Utility and checked start up in safe mode there too, so now I can't get it out of it, and since my mouse and keyboard won't opperate in safe mode, I get to the log in page to select user but the mouse just won't move and pressing "CTRL ALTDLT" no response.
In the Recovery Counsole when I rean CHKDSK /r this is what it came back with...
"The volume appears to contain or or more unrecoverable problems."
    97638572 kilobytes total disk space.
    90877508 kilobytes are available.
406 bytes in each allocation unit.
24409643 total allocation units on disk.
22719377 allocation units available on disk.
So what does that mean? Not sure what the " volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" means when it's not telling me what they could possibly be. Thoughts anyone?
If anyone knows or has some good advice on how to get windows back up and running correctly, and without wiping out my data - as I can't get it backed up, I would be tremendously grateful...
2 months of this is really enough, dying to use my system, and praying that I can...
    Thanks so much,

    Here's what worked: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184
I followed the instructions above and once I finished, After re-booting, I selected Microsoft Windows XP Professional and the System Configuration Utility came up.
On the “General” tab, it shows that the Start Up Selection is on “Selective Startup” with everything checked, but what’s marked “Using Modified BOOT.INI
Tried to change it to “Normal Startup – load all device drivers and services” then re-start.
Windows came back up, but so did the System Configuration Utility and still showing that it was starting up with “Selective Startup”
Now just need to figure out how to start it up in “Normal”, if in fact that’s possible. Will keep you posted and if anyone has any further suggestions, that would be much appreciated.
I do hope this will help all the others that have run into the main issue, which I have found is caused by the Parallels Desktop by they way, not Microsoft, and that start having issues by getting the dreaded " hal.dll " file is missing or corrupt on a direct Boot to Windows.
    Very long and sleepless night….

You have limited opportunity to attempt to create a backup of your created files.
That is what the SafeBoot or safemode appears to allow you -- at the moment.
Since the hard disk drive exhibits signs of failure or other major issues, plan
on a replacement in the near future. You may be able to get the computer to
start up in a regular full OS X (not safe mode) but consider its hours are limited.
An externally enclosed hard disk drive (with own power supply, not relying on
Mac ports to run it) is a good basic means of which to use a disk utility to make
a copy or a Clone of the current OS X. This may help retrieve an archive that
could be used along with a Time Machine backup, to restore your Mac once you
get a new hard drive installed inside.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Grey startup screen on my profile, but I can access guest profile and my hardrive partition to windows?!?! I had a kernal panic after it was knocked off coffee table in my user account, now I cannot access it from safe mode or anything... :(

My laptop fell off the coffee table, and slammed shut. It then produced a kernal Panic to restart, which I did. It the brings up the user icons, mine and guest, but will not go past the grey screen with spinner on mine. It does let me into the basic safari setting I had on the guest user, AND when i press option on start up, will let me access the windows partition I have set up and all works fine.
I have tried safe mode, safe mode with display screen and the NVRAM/PRAM restarts, and nothing!
I have let the battery run completely, restarted, filled up the battery before starting.... everything.... anybody have any ideas? else I am going to have to visit a genius! grrrrrrr....
