X301 and MBR

I am running WinXP-SP3 on a X301. For the first year it was working fine with AHCI mode activated in the BIOS and a SSD SATA 64Gb. However, every now and then I lose the MBR and I have to repair it with XP installation disk. If I deactivate AHCI and use COMPATIBILITY mode, XP works fine but slower. I have tried to update the SSD firmware and the SATA driver for XP but they seem to be updated. I suspect some XP update changed something, because the laptop was working like a charm until now. Any ideas? Anybody experienced this problem before?

Dell's fingerprint suit can be set-up on X301 instead of lenovo's package - works perfect!
now fo Wimedia device (that is wireless LAN) use the one from System Update (it show 2 Wireless LAN packages) that has "64 bit" in the name and ignore the second...
Install Auto features from Sysem Update - that wil properly enable microphone
Don't install registry patches and Vista Component updates...
Good luck....
P.S. I assume that You running 64bit version of OS... there is no reason to use 32bit on any hardware that allows to run 64bit....

  • X301 and Windows 7

    Hello,
I installed Windows 7 on my X301 and have problems with three hardware devices.
One is the fingerprint reader. It is shown in the device manager but I cannot find a vaild driver.
The other two hardware devices I am not able to identify.
Is there a solution for these problems? When will drivers be available for windows 7? (I read the driver announcement post)

  • X301 and F3507G issues in Australia

Hi I have a F3507G wirleess card in my X301 and my service provider is not supported byt eh mobile card software form Lenovo.
I have tried some of the connection attributes talked about on other posts but these seem to turn the F3507G into a dial up modem and that is not what I need or want.
On the inital install I had options to connect over HSDPA and connected successfully once then  the software showed the modem as being not available despite it being OK in the hardware profile.
I have the latest versions of Access Connections, Mobile Broadband Connect and the driver for the F3507G is up to date.
My service provider in Sydney in Telstra.
Three months after installing this card I would love to be able to use it more than once and for more than 15 mins.
    Please help.

I have a F3507G in a T400 that is running fine with the Telstra Mobile Broadband Next G business service..... there was a Telstra selection on the pick list offered in Access Connections.
If you are trying to use a F3507G with Telstra BigPond Next G consumer service, you may have a more interesting time, as the BigPond Next G service generally only works readily with a device was supplied by BigPond, as they track the IMEIs of their devices.

  • X301 and ubuntu, or RHEL 5x

Hello, a quick search does not return much about linux on x301, so I am going ahead and ask.
I am pondering about purchasing a x301, and I am somewhat concerned by the few reports
found online, that would seem to suggest that there are a handful of issues, and in general
it would seem necessary to go "bleeding edge" on linux.
Some complains about the ALPS touchpad, many about wifi, even wired ethernet.
Ideally I'd like to be able to run RedHat EL.
Supposedly the x301 is "certified" to work with it, check this and this (@lenovo itself).
Does anybody have any good report, or knowledge about my question?
    Thanks a lot,

from my 5 minutes of research, RHEL 5.2 has kernel 2.6.18 which got released at september 2006 and updated to 2.6.18.8 at february 2007.  RHEL likes to freeze the kernel version for a long time for stability purposes.  Remember, RHEL is intended for servers mostly.  It is the same main kernel release that Debian Etch uses. Your x301 is a GM45 chipset (like my sl300), which came out this summer in 2008.  All the kinks have still not been worked out on this chipset platform in even the most bleeding edge distributions (which employ linux kernel 2.6.27).  It most definitely will fail or be troublesome to get working as the developers didn't know much about the hardware at the time RHEL 5 was released.  you might get by using an fbdev X driver... then you still have to worry about stuff like ethernet and wireless lan.
If you really need it, I think virtualization with something like virtualbox is your only hope, and I wouldn't attempt to get such an old os running natively on such a new box.  To make it work, you'd probably have to recompile your own kernel or install fedora rpms for kernel, Xorg and drivers and such.  It'd definitely be a hassle. don't do it.
Vbox from windows is pretty easy... you could get the setup done in like 5 mins... and then you install RHEL from an iso image or cd just like a normal machine.  Plenty of documentation online, and you won't have to worry about stuff like wireless.
    my 2 cents.

  • GPT and MBR tables messed up after bootcamp installation.

Ok, so I had Windows 7 installed for a while, via bootcamp. It recently screwed over so badly, I ended up rescuing what I could from the partition and starting over. When I went into the windows setup, it didn't recognise the partition as NTFS, and asked to format it. I clicked yes, and everything installed fine.
I have rEFIt installed so I can boot into linux, and before this reinstall, windows showed up there. It didn't this time. I ran the 'Partitioning tool' and it showed me the GPT and MBR tables. The GPT table was incorrect, showing that my NTFS partition was 'Mac OS Extended Journaled (HFS+)'. My MBR table was correct. It asked if I wanted to change my MBR table so it was correct with the GPT table. I need this the other way round, so the GPT table is corrected from the MBR table.
    Can anyone help with this?

  • Recovery and MBR

I recently purchased a Sartellite Core I7 with Win7 64bit installed. I don't have the exact model number since I am posting from a different machine. Anyway here is my situation: I recently contracted a rootkit (Alureon.A). My automatic update began failing and started popping an error describing what was wrong. I followed links and downloaded software to remove it. Nothing seemed to remove it and since the computer was so new I just decided to use the recovery partition on the hard drive. It installed perfectly and the computer is as good as new. My question is: Did the recovery completely overwrite and create a new master boot record, effectively getting rid of the rootkit? I prefer not to wipe the drive to DoD standards since the drive is over 500GB in size. Quite a lengthy process and it would destroy my recovery partition.

Yes. The recovery process restores every byte on the hard disk. The MBR resides in the first sector.
The recovery does not affect the BIOS, however.

  • Port Replicator (45K1610), x301, and resolution help

I have a x301, a port replicator with model number 45K1610, and a Dell 22" wide screen monitor.  When I connect the monitor directly to the laptop I can get the max resolution of 1680x1050 out of the monitor but when I plug the monitor through the port replicator I can only get a max resolution of 1440x900.  We have some customers here that what to run the monitor through the port replicator and have it mirror the laptop with the resolution of 1680x1050.  I have not been able to find a way to do this and according to the specs of the port replicator it is capable of pushing a resolution greater than the 1680x1050.  Anyone have any idea on how to get this to work?  Thanks.

I am having the same issue. For some reason, mirroring will only match the max laptop resolution on the external display. I have a 24" monitor that can display 1080p. I need to get the external display to AT LEAST 1600x1200.
I understand the you can extend to the external display, but I am unable to set the external display as the primary monitor (move the start button, taskbar, etc) to the external.

  • X301 and pre-installed Lenovo Software

    Hello to everybody.
    I'm new in this community.
    I've been a ThinkPad user since 1997 (600, R52, T60p) and now I've bought a X301 with Win 7 32 bit.
Comparing the Laptop with my previous T60p with Win XP, I have some doubts about the configuration and the preinstalled software (Think Vantage Tools) wich comes with it. Maybe someone here can help me.
    My doubts are:
    - why is not possible to get the productivity center and get it in association with the blue button?
    - why is the Active Protection software pre-installed (and loaded at startup), when the HD is an SSD one?
    - the GPS doesn't work (Only one time I've got one satellite in an open environment, where my phone gets full GPS coverage, otherweise normal is 0 satellite)
    - the fingerprint recognition at startup is very very slow
    - every Lenovo software, when launched, opens very slowly (minutes).
This is the situation I've found out of the box. I'm wondering whether the Laptop has left the factory with a wrong configuration (I mean, for Win 7 and SSD) and if I would be able to set everything in the right status through the use of System-Update.
Thank-you to everyone and, please, excuse my terrible English.

  • About to order X301 and dock. Have concerns

I am going to order the X301, with 128 SSD, DVD-R/W, XP, and Verizon WWAN. Plus I am adding the USB Dock. Sometimes too much research can be a bad thing. I am now having second thoughts that the system will run as advertised.
Specifically, I am concerned about the Verizon WWAN not being able to connect. I already have a Verizon wireless account, so I will need to transfer that to the X301. There were many posts about problems with this. Does anyone know if this has been fixed?
Second, I have read of all sorts of problems with the display. I will be using a HP w2207h monitor, with a DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor, and am concerned about getting a quality display.
I have been a long time ThinkPad user, but strayed with my last purchase. I thought coming back to a ThinkPad would reduce the computer problems I am having with a non-ThinkPad, but am wondering if the quality of the product has slipped in the last 2 years?
Any advice on whether I should look at a different ThinkPad model, or stick with the X301 would be appreciated.

No dock, i just use the machine when i get on site in the mine, it has 3G and GPS integrated system, great little machine, but it is bit dirty due to all the dusts. In the office i have my own T61 and X60, which i brought along for this trip.
I am using the X301 right now.

  • X301 and Win7 - some functions not working 100%

    Hi
My x301 (2777-CTO) shipped 1 day AFTER the Win 7 launch, but had Vista on it (how much do I wish I'd waited to order, I didn't pay any attention to launch dates)
Anyway I had a legit copy of Win 7 business so I did a fresh install. I then went through and installed all the drivers on these pages and then ran system update 4 a few times until it says there are no updates.
I have a lovely working speedy system, however it's not as joined up as I'd normally expect from a Thinkpad. The issues (not exhaustive) are:
ThinkVantage button no longer lit up and just loads a 'toolbox' not the usual list of links to the different features?
No ability to configure my 3G account (I'm sure there was a specific app under Vista)
    No obvious camera software
    No brightness controls screen overlay
My question is simple. Should I have all ThinkVantage software after a fresh install and system update or are there still bits an pieces yet to be released by Lenovo?
If I bother to get the upgrade media will I get a full driver update too so I get the full EE experience?
    Thanks

If the laptop is 32-bit, then you're running the last 32-bit version of Muse, Muse 7.4.
If the laptop is 64-bit, then you're running the most recent version, which is Muse 2014.3.2 (which is equivalent to Muse 11.2).

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 UEFI, GPT and MBR disks

    Hi,
I am currently building a task sequence around Windows 7 x64 Pro SP1, and am having trouble with the partitioning of disks. The model of Laptop is P701/2:
    http://globalsp.ts.fujitsu.com/dmsp/Publications/public/ds-LIFEBOOK-P701.pdf
    http://globalsp.ts.fujitsu.com/dmsp/Publications/public/ds-LIFEBOOK-P702.pdf
When the TS runs for both machines, it decides it is a UEFI machine, and will only partition with GPT disks. In the smsts.log:
    "UEFI: True"
My issue is that for support reasons I must be able to partition with MBR.
These were previously installed with XP on MBR partitions. I can partition with MBR in the TS successfully, but when it tries to apply the OS it is looking for UEFI boot loaders and fails .
"Unable to find the partition that contains the OS boot loaders. Please ensure the hard disks have been properly partitioned
Unspecified error (Error: 80004005; Source: Windows)"
It installs fine when I partition with GPT disks. So, considering the machine is obviously fine with MBR partitions, is there a way of forcing SCCM to ignore any UEFI setting it is picking up and allow me to use MBR partitions?
    thanks
    J

Ok, thanks for all assistance, I have found the answer to force WinPE not to boot in UEFI mode:
Boot in UEFI mode: To prevent Windows
PE from booting in BIOS mode, remove the bootmgr file
on the root of the media.
Boot in BIOS mode: To prevent Windows PE from booting
in UEFI mode, remove the efi folder
on the root of the media.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn293283.aspx
I remove the EFI folder from my WinPE 4.0 USB stick, and I now get this in the smsts.log:
    "UEFI: False"
and it builds successfully on MBR.

  • X301 and docking support

    Hi,
does the x301 support any kind of docking stations, as a docking/port replicator is mentioned.
If not, is there any linux support for DisplayLlink?

the X300 and X301 can use the enhanced USB port replicator.   there are no provisions for a dedicated dock like found on the other X-series thinkpads.
regarding displaylink support under linux, it doesn't appear that drivers have been made available yet on their site.   only drivers for XP/vista and beta drivers for OS-X are listed.

  • X301 and F3507g

Hi, I have an X301, model 2774-18U, running XP/SP3. I've purchased Ericsson F3507g which is supposed to be compatible with X301 according to a few support pages and software readme.txts. However, after installing the card, F3507g does not appear in Device manager, and there are no errors of any kind.
    Any suggestions?
    Thx.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It works! In the end I thought I might be missing a BIOS error message because of Startup->Boot->Quick option, so I switched it to Diagnostics. No error message appeared, but when OS booted up, everything was recognised. Returning the option to Quick didn't delete the device, so I guess the system doesn't rescan peripherals with that one.

  • X301 and Wake from Standby Issues

I received my X301 on last Thursday, and really like this computer. Over the weekend, however, I noticed a recurring problem.
It seems to be unable to wake from standby when connected directly (not using the port replicator) to an external monitor. I tried different combinations of entering standby:
    1. Shut off external monitor, then go to standby;
    2. Leave monitor on, then go to standby;
I am using extended desktop for the display properties.
When not connected to a monitor, it seems to be OK. I had selected the option to do nothing when closing the lid on the laptop, but changed that when I noticed this issue. It did not seem to make a difference. I have to hold the power button down and shut off the computer to re-boot.
When I open the lid, the message on the screen is something like going into standby, but it should say, coming out of standby. Regardless, nothing happens. I do not think I have password protected the machine. I may have, but also think I deleted this because I thought that could have been causing the problem. At start up, I do not have to swipe my finger, nor enter a password.
    My OS is XP.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

I have the same issue.  x301.  Win7 64bit.  I called tech sup.  They want me to back up everything and go back to factory defaults.  This never worked.  It was a problem out of the box so I am reluctant.  I uninstalled the access program that shows wireless options and network connectivity.  Now I can wake, but when I do I have no network connectivity.  I have to reboot to get wireless or wired connectivity.  I'm still looking for a cure.

    Hi,
I could really use some help getting win7 and the f3507g working.
I upgraded from vista to win7 and now the card is alway on according to the led, but in access con it is off.
    Gps is not working ether.
And i have run system update, all is upto date.
    Any suggestions ?

    Ok, thanks Bill,
I'm not sure what/if there is a system difference, but nothing related to the F3507g works on my X301 running win7.
The driver is version 1.0.0.52, and the Device Manager states every thing is fine and the devices (I have 3 f507g related devices, 1 network adapter and 2 ports..) also states every thing is fine.
One symptom is the wwan led is 'always on' and i cant turn it off
     Any suggestions ?
