X301 and pre-installed Lenovo Software

Hello to everybody.
I'm new in this community.
I've been a ThinkPad user since 1997 (600, R52, T60p) and now I've bought a X301 with Win 7 32 bit.
Comparing the Laptop with my previous T60p with Win XP, I have some doubts about the configuration and the preinstalled software (Think Vantage Tools) wich comes with it. Maybe someone here can help me.
My doubts are:
- why is not possible to get the productivity center and get it in association with the blue button?
- why is the Active Protection software pre-installed (and loaded at startup), when the HD is an SSD one?
- the GPS doesn't work (Only one time I've got one satellite in an open environment, where my phone gets full GPS coverage, otherweise normal is 0 satellite)
- the fingerprint recognition at startup is very very slow
- every Lenovo software, when launched, opens very slowly (minutes).
This is the situation I've found out of the box. I'm wondering whether the Laptop has left the factory with a wrong configuration (I mean, for Win 7 and SSD) and if I would be able to set everything in the right status through the use of System-Update.
Thank-you to everyone and, please, excuse my terrible English.

The great idea is - to update Media Player. But telling you by secret - it's a bad idea. The really great idea - not to use MP at all. Use Winamp, foobar, VLC(+skins) or iTunes, but not MP...
No trust for MicroSoft since Longhorn appeared.

    HI,
If your old version of iTunes is still working - then I sugest you stick with that.
iTunes 11 is a lousy update - It will not retain your playlists, you can't find and delete duplicates... and a whole arry of oyher issues. (have a look around this forum to see how many issues IT11 gives people)
Just a friendly advise and warning :-)

  • Finder will not open and cannot install new software

Please help:-  Finder does not open when clicked from the dock - instead the desktop icons disappear and reappear.  If I try to install a downloaded piece of software (e.i. Firefox or Chrome or Silverlight) the same thing happens and the software install simply disappears.
When I do Verify Disk - it's okay.
Checking Disk Permissions reveals a number of 'issues' each of which claims to have bene 'modified and will not be repaired' such as -
    Warning SUID file "usr/bin/at"
    Warning SUID file "usr/bin/atq"
    Warning SUID file "usr/bin/atrm"
    Warning SUID file "usr/bin/login"

    Warning SUID file "System/ry/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent"
    Warning SUID file "usr/libexec/security_authrampoline"
    Plus others ...
Reparing Disk permissions has no effect.
This started happening last week and seams to be getting worse - after reboot the problem continues.......

Guys, thanks for the support and ideas:-
Moving the /com.apple.finder.plist to the desktop and restarting clearly made a difference.  I then deleted the plist folder on my desktop, however, the problem has slowly returned.
    I did steps 1 & 2 suggested by Linc Davis above and;
Step 1 - there was no evidence of the errors but with limited test capability as 'my downloads' folder was  empty - so I was unable to attempt an install.  The machine however did seam to run quicker and Folder opened just fine when asked.
Step 2 - slower in Safe Mode and right-click failed to operate but Finder opened correctly each time.
After re-start and connecting again my external stuff (HP Printer, TimeMachine HD, Duronic USB hub, HK Speakers - they've been attached from day 1) the problem is completely back as before the deletion of the /com.apple.finder.plist  The desktop goes 'off' (desktop icons disappear) and 'on' (they reappear) without an install being achieved or 'allowed'.
Verify Disk is okay.  Disk permissions produce the same result as first posted above.  Repair Disk Permissions has same result as before.

After years of suffering MS Windows gremlins I came to Mac on the advice of my brother but 18 months-in I find my Mac is acting as old Windows PC's did?  I think I'll bite the bullet and wipe and re-install my software.  Time machine should keep me right and I've backed-up my Downloads/docs/music/ to a second external.  iCloud holds my mail/calendar etc - so, that should be enough - yes?????  I appreciate all your help but do not want to waste people's time.

  • Win 8 product key and a pre-installed Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13, how to get it?

    Hello
I live in Finland and I have read previously that these Windows 8 product keys are now linked somehow with motherboard´s BIOS systems, so we actually don´t need to know our product codes anymore.
Well, in some cases we do need to know them.
My Windows asked me once if I want to install a new version to get some new features, the same procedure can be launched by going to your Control panel, selecting System and selecting the top option where it says you could update to a new version to unlock new features.
This requires a 25-digit Windows 8 product key. Which we Yoga 13 owners do not have, as it is somewhere in the BIOS, hidden from us.
How can I give my product key to this field if I do not know it?
    1. Called to Microsoft
I tried contacting Microsoft Finland about this, but their automatic phone service stated it was none of their concern as it is a pre-installed system, and therefore I need to contact Lenovo straight. I tried to get a person to talk to, but I got none. Always an automatic service. I called to their switch (is this the right word?) to ask if I could get a person to talk to, but the number she forwarded me to always got to an automatic robot, again.
    2. Lenovo Customer support
Well, Lenovo directs customers to this forum from their customer service web page, so I hope some Lenovo employee can finally answer this question, please. I value customer service, and getting an answer from another forum using customer is not really customer service when they suggest using some 3rd party software to maybe get your windows 8 key with a method that may not be the most fancy way if asked from Microsoft. Lenovo Finland in Espoo (near Helsinki, contacts here: http://www.fonecta.fi/yritykset/Espoo/792365/Lenovo+Finland) has a phone number that hangs up every time you try to call it, I tried 4 times. This is getting awkward, you know.
    Thank you,
    - Tapio

When they ask for that key, they are expecting an upgrade key to something like Windows 8 Pro or addition of a Media Center Key. They don't expect you to use the same Key you are already using. It won't work.
Anyhow, take a look at this:

    Hello donkey,
please also refer to this extensive Thinkpad Superguide.
I would recommend do not uninstall all the programs, especially Thinkvantage.
Pc Doctor is Lenovo´s system checker tool. Leave it.
McAfee should be a trial version, if you don´t have purchased it with your machine. (Antivir, AVG are good and free solutions for private use.
Agilix Gobinder seems a e-learning solution. May you have bought a students version?
Skype should be clear, don´t know if it will be usefull to you.

  • My recently purchase iMac came with pre-installed operating software but no backup disks. What happens if I find it necessary to re-install?

Having ditched Windows after years of frustration I recently bought an iMac with Lion pre-installed. While not necessary at this tme there were no installation disks sent with the purchase. What happens should I find it necessary to reinstall the operating system?

No. You do NOT have to buy Lion again.
If you replace your HDD or erase the recovery partion, it will download and install lion from Apple' servers.
    See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
    Quoute:
If you happen to encounter a situation in which you cannot start from the Recovery HD, such as your hard drive stopped responding or you installed a new hard drive without Mac OS X installed, new Mac models introduced after public availability of OS X Lion automatically use the Lion Internet Recovery feature if the Recovery HD (Command-R method above) doesn't work. Lion Internet Recovery lets you start your Mac directly from Apple's Servers. The system runs a quick test of your memory and hard drive to ensure there are no hardware issues.

  • Is it possible to get back all of your pictures that was on Lightroom after uninstalling and re-installing the software?

I recently had to get my Mac completely rebooted by having the OS reinstalled and the hard drive replaced, due to a conflict with Adobe and my Mac. I had to uninstall and reinstall all my softwares, including Photoshop and Lightroom. They didn't mention anything about losing all your files. And now, I am left with nothing on my lightroom; all the files I had were very important. I thought well since it is an app, there must be a way to restore all my files. Is there??
    Thanks,
    Luc

All of the files that you were working on and managing in Lightroom were not actually "in" Lightroom. Your files are stored in folders on your computer. Lightroom simply points to those files and displays them. Reinstalling Lightroom would not have any impact on your image files unless the hard drive(s) were reformatted in the process. Lightroom uses a catalog which is a database to keep track of where your images are located. It also stores all of the adjustments made to your images. If you backed up that catalog before reinstalling your software, and if you still have all of your images, then you should be able to open that catalog that you used previously and have all of your work still in place. If you don't have the catalog then I'm afraid you will just have to start over. Whether or not you still have your image files isn't clear.

  • How do I remove the pre-installed O2 software from...

I've just taken delivery of a brand new Nokia 6220 Classic from an eBay seller. Although the box, manuals, CD etc are generic/non-network branded, when I switch the phone on, it's full of O2 software, logos, splash screens, etc. (O2 is one of the major networks here in the UK). This all happens despite that fact that I've not yet put a SIM card into the phone.
What I want to do is to reset the phone so that it is identical to one that had never had O2 software installed, so that it is just like a true generic/non-network branded phone that's sold in places like the Carphone Warehouse (a major high-street mobile chain here in the UK).
Does anyone know if it's possible to do this, and if so, how?
The SIM card I'll be using with the phone is a Vodafone Pay As You Go card, although I may be switching to an ASDA Pay As You Go card. ASDA is a large supermarket chain owned by Wal-Mart. Their phone network is a "virtual" one - they don't have any network hardware, they simply offer a rebranded Vodafone service, which is cheaper than Vodafone itself.
Many thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
(Please also see my topic in the "PC and Mac Software" section asking which version of PC Suite I need to use to transfer text messages & pictures from my 6610 to my 6220 Classic. Thanks.)
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

After some initial forays into getting the firmware changed, I decided in the end that it would be just far too time-consuming, expensive & difficult to seriously consider getting it done, so I ended up selling the phone & buying another one that had generic firmware.
Just to clarify for anyone reading this thread - the box, manuals & CD that came with my original 6220 classic were the generic/non-network branded versions, but the firmware on the phone was the O2 version. This is not the same as the phone being locked to the O2 network.
What does having O2 firmware on a 6220 classic mean in practical terms?
It means that as well as all the standard Nokia menus & features, there are additional O2 ones. The phone in use is effectively dual-brand.
When you start up the phone, you get the Nokia "joining hands" animation, followed by an "O2 Welcome" one. When the phone has finished starting up, the default "theme" on the phone (which is easily changed) is the O2 one - blue gradient wallpaper with bubbles running up & down the left hand edge. The bottom right hand corner of the screen says "O2", meaning that you're supposed to press the top right button on the keypad to access O2-specific features. There's a couple of O2 contacts in the address book, and there's a "Goodbye" O2 animation before the Nokia logo appears when you switch the phone off.
I made several phone calls to both Nokia & O2. The end result of all my fact-finding was that in order to get the firmware changed legally, without invalidating the warranty, I'd have had to persuade O2 to sell me written permission, and a "restriction code", to have the firmware changed - as per the previous replies in this thread. There was no guarantee that they would be prepared to do this. Even if they were prepared to, this would likely have taken many weeks and cost a fortune (3 figures) and even then it might have been difficult to persuade a Nokia dealer to do the actual firmware change.
My final phone call to O2 on this subject was with an African gentleman whose command of English was decidedly dubious, who had never even heard of firmware alterations, who took half an hour to get his head round what I wanted to do, and whose final piece of advice to me, when he couldn't provide the correct O2 phone number for the relevant department, was to try searching for it on Google!
Given all this, I'm sure you can understand that despite me losing a lot of money in the process, I was better off selling the phone & buying another one.
The moral of the story is to check what sort of firmware is on a phone before you buy it, or even better yet, avoid buying mobile phones on eBay in the first place! I actually bought & paid for 5 different phones from eBay in the end before I received the final one that I was reasonably happy with, but that's another long & sad story...

I am not exactly sure how so you might want to wait until someone with more experience shows up, but from what I am told there are two options. Option 1) You can re-install your operating system and hand pick the software that you want installed. Option 2) There might be a way where you can drag and drop the software into the garbage can to delete the asscoiating applicants. Option 1 would be the safest bet I would believe.

  • Error when installing Lenovo solutions for small business [Screenie included]

    Hello everyone.
Recently, I tried opening the pre-installed Lenovo solutions for Small Business software on my Lenovo e530 running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit version (Upgraded from Win 7 Home Prem 64-bit) but failed after getting a message for encountering a critical problem of some sort. I then tried restarting my computer and that did not solve the problem. And then, I decided to install an upgrade version of it from this website http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS030146. But before that I uninstalled the previous version by uninstalling Intel Small Business advantage customizations with Revo Uninstaller and I deleted all the related folders too with a thorough scan. Out of my expection, I got this message below saying that I could not proceed due to some unspecified error. Has anyone encountered the same problem before? Does anyone have a solution for this? I'm not sure if that's my computer's problem or from the driver itself. Thank you for your attention to this issue.

    Hi, dougy
This should be configurable under msconfig. This is a program that you can use to tell your computer which programs you want to start when Windows starts. To get to this program, type msconfig into the search bar in the Start menu. A window should appear. Check under the Startup tab and make sure that the Lenovo Solutions for Small Business program does not have a checkmark next to it. This should prevent this program from starting up when your computer turns on.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam
