X301 win7 OS, 32 or 64 Bit??

Hi there,
Just got my X301 today and discovered that the OS is WIN7 32 Bit.
I ordered and got my laptop with 4 GB ram.
From what i know, 4GB is useless without 64bit OS.
I've got some questions:
- is it true that only 64bit OS can fully use the extra RAM i bought?
- how can i replace the Win 7 32Bit license to 64Bit license.
- how do i change the OS, still save all the nice Thinkvantage features?
Thanks in advance,
Ron

Hi Ron!
Yes 32 bit Windows can use about 3GB max.
To get to 64 bit Windows you are looking at a clean install.
After the clean install you can either install the Lenovo drivers and ThinkVantage sofware manually, or use  ThinkVantage System Update, which will offer to install all of it automatically it for you.
When I do clean installs I also delete the Lenovo disk recovery partitions as I don't need them (I use a Windows Home Server for backup).
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

    I have an x301 and there is no software for the thinkvantage button that I can find.  Nothing under program files on the start menu.
    The button no longer works.
    Is there an install package I can use to install the needed software and drivers?  If so can you send me a link please?
    thanks,

  • Downgrade win7 from 64bit to 32 bit.

    Hi,
    Just purchased a T520 with Win7 64 bit. I am anticipating problems with this as we use quite a lot of engineering software (often old) and would be better if we had a 32bit version. Can I get a set of disks from Lenovo for this?

    I believe they will sell you some after they verify what came with the serial number you have.

  • X301 & win7 restart blank screen

    Hi,
    I installed Win7 on my x301 several times (64bit and 32bit).
    Everytime I restart my computer, the screen goes blank and I have to force it to shutdown it will come back up again without any problem.
    Anybody with x301 having this issue too?
    Thanks.

    Did you delete all the partitions on the drive before you installed?  Build 7100 is working great on my X301 and the only thing I did during the install that wasn't a default was kill all the partitions and let the installer partition/format the entire drive as part of the installation.
    If there are "extra" partitions on the drive the BCD might be confused.
    Full disclosure: Lenovo issues my paychecks.

  • "Out of memory" error using SmartView v11.1.1.3.500, MS Excel 2007 & MS Win7 Prof SP1 (all 32-bit)

    Hi All,
    A user is regularly experiencing "Out of memory" error messages while retrieving large MS Excel 2007 worksheets (ad-hoc analysis; approx 700 rows by 13 columns) connected to a Planning cube via 32-bit SmartView v11.1.1.3.500 (Build 008) on a 32-bit MS Windows 7 Prof (SP1) computer with 4GB of RAM. The same user is reporting experiencing a number of other issues (eg, TCP-related time-out, unable to connect to the APS, SmartView add-in disappearing, etc) at the same time.
    I could not locate any specific KB document from the My Oracle Support website which addressed these specific issues all at once but from various posts out there, the recommendations to address similar issues were as follows:
    Tick the Options > Display > Reduce Excel file size option;
    Tick the Options > Display > Improve metadata storage option;
    Rebuild the MS Excel workbook from scratch;
    Delete all temp files located in the C:\Users\USER NAME\AppData\Local\Temp directory;
    Disable auto-recovery for MS Excel;
    Add misc TCP-related registry entries (eg, TcpTimedWaitDelay, MaxUserPort, MaxFreeTcbs, etc) on both the client PC and server;
    Adjust MS Windows for best performance;
    Increase the page file by 25%-50% more than the physical amount of RAM installed on the client PC;
    Relocate the page file to a different drive as compared to the drive where MS Windows is installed on the client PC;
    On top of the above, are there any other recommendations anyone else would like to share to address the "Out of memory" issue?
    Many thanks in advance,
    JBM

    Monitor the Full GC in GC log and see if there is any gradual increase in the free memory retained after every Full GC over a period, if there is a gradual increase and if its reaching maximum specified heap over a period of time, that means there might be some slow leak from application or native libraries.
    Also please check if you have any pattern or request which might be triggering OOM all of the sudden.
    If its memory leak best way to investigate that is to capture JRA's at regular interval's and monitor top 10 objects and see which one is growing and consuming more % of heap over a period of time.
    You can also have this by captured by print_object_summary and print_memusage options in JRCMD command over a period of time.
    Hope this helps.

  • Win7 problem with Telnet with IE8 (32 bit version)

    We are not able to run Telnet in Win7 (64bit)  with IE8 (32 bit ) (example:
    telnet://ip), but it works with 64bit IE8.
    Any solution?
    Thanks
    Bahram

    To enable Telnet client functionality in win 7, 64 bit, with IE 8 ,32 bit, please follow these instructions:
    1-Open the telnet client in control panel.
    A) Go to Control Panel
    B) Point to Programs And Features
    C)Click Turn Windows features on or off
    D)Check Telnet Client
    E)Hit OK
    2-
    Copy the 64 bit version of telnet.exe from %windir%\System32 to %windir%\SysWOW64
    3- Add the following registry key for the 32 bit version of IE
    Open Regedit.exe and navigate to the following registry key:
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_DISABLE_TELNET_PROTOCOL
    Backup to original key by right clicking “FEATURE_DISABLE_TELNET_PROTOCOL” and selecting export.
    Save the key to a location where you can easily locate the file if it needs to be restored.
    If this key does not exist, please add the Key as named above.
    4- Right click “FEATURE_DISABLE_TELNET_PROTOCOL” again and select “New” and “DWORD (32-bit) Value” from the menu.
    In the right pane, name the new value “iexplore.exe”.
    Verify that the value for iexplore.exe is 0x00000000 and then close regedit.exe.
    5- Copy
    %windir%\system32\en-US\telnet.exe.mui to %windir%\SysWOW64\en-US

  • Embedded Flash videos play on 32 bit Win7, not on 64 bit Win7, IE9 32 bit

    Hello,
    I have two PCs.  One is running 32 bit Win7 SP1, the other 64 bit Win 7 SP1.  Both have IE9 32 bit and the latest version of Flash 32 bit, 10.3.183.7.  This page http://www.iorr.org/talk/read.php?1,999739 and others at iorr.org have embedded YouTube Flash videos.  On the 32 bit machine, they play fine on both Admin and Standard accounts.  On the 64 bit machine, the embedded videos are only visible on the Admin account.  Standard accounts show an empty box with a broken icon symbol where the video should be.  (Note:  not trying to use IE9 64 bit.)
    I've spent a couple hours uninstalling and reinstalling Flash trying to see the videos on a Standard account on the 64 bit PC.  Nothing works.  Any suggestions?  Note that normal Flash videos work fine on the 64 bit PC Standard accounts.  Only embedded videos fail.
    During this exercise, I noticed that the 32 bit PC has the Flash Player Control Panel under Control Panel->System and Security.  The 64 bit PC does not have it there, but I can manually bring it up from a CPL file in the SysWOW64 folder.  Not sure if that's part of the problem or a different problem.
    Thanks for your time.

    I spent hours and hours on the same problem. My computer has a slightly different configuration. I am using Win7 32 bit, but experienced the same problems. Embedded Flash is working under Admin account, but not under other accounts. Many de-installs and re-installs, but nothing seemed to help. Until I found this internet post:
    http://superuser.com/questions/244316/embedded-video-is-not-shown-in-internet-explorer-9-r c-or-beta
    The solution offered in that post solved all my problems. Hurray!!!
    Solution:
    * Open REGEDIT
    * Find the following key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/x-shockwave-flash
    * Delete the key
    * Re-install flash
    * Problem solved (in my case)
    In the replies of the above mentioned link another solution was given (in stead of deleting the key)
    * Right click the above mentioned key
    * Change the access rights and allow all users read access to the key (did not check this myself)
    In order to keep the solution safe in this thread, please find a copy of the info in the link above here:
    In IE 9 RC or in beta, the embedded video is not shown in the web page. I verified the security settings in "internet options". Did not find any issue. Please find the screen shot below. I am able to view the flash videos in Youtube. But, for some reason, in some sites the embedded video is not shown.
    I don't have this issue with Firefox.
    UPDATE:
    I am able to see view the embedded video in Admin account. But not able to view it in Standard account.
    UPDATE:
    As it works as administrator, use Process Monitor and filter the Status on ACCESS DENIED.
    This allows you to troubleshoot what key the iexplore.exe process can't access.
    @TomWij, Thanks for the suggestions. The Process Monitor hint helped to nail down the issue. When run with standard privileges, it is getting "ACCESS DENIED" for reading the key
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/x-shockwave-flash.
    When I elevated the privilege to Admin account, it did not have any issue. Then I uninstalled flash, deleted the registry key and then installed flash again. Now, I am able to view the embedded video in standard account.

  • IS CS3 Production Premium incompatible with Win7 Home Premium 64bit?

    I installed CS3 on my new machine with Windows7 Home Premium 64bit on it and it appeared to install correctly.
    So when I click the photoshop.exe file it opens a window and freezes.... (not responding) I have sat for an extended amount of time and nothing ever happens beyond that.
    If I use after effects or illustrator or flash... nothing happens at all... no windows... however If I open up my task manager, I can see the processes running for those programs... just no applications...
    I have run as admin and in WinXP SP2 mode.
    Disabled DEP and UAC.
    Updated everything in the book.
    I dont' get it...
    So I am starting to wonder if it just isn't compatible with Win7.
    Can anyone shed any light on the subject or direct me to anything that could help out?

    Hudechrome,
    Can you clarify on CS4 running in Windows 7? My employeer is upgrading to 64-Bit Windows 7 Ultimate (new laptop w/8 GB ram). I can re-install with XP if I really want to.
    For Win7 Ultimate, do I just run the 32-bit PS CS4 app for best results or is there something special I need to do?
    Thanks!
    Please read what I said, excerpted here:
    "...and they work fine in all 64 bit OS including Win7...as 32 bit programs."
    Now Dec9 has some further notes above which should work fine. Personally, I will change everything when CS5 arrives. Hardware, OS and programs. Since I am still running CS3 (which should also run on Win7 at 32 bits) I am in no hurry to upset a rather well oiled editing system. Yesterday, I did upgrades to my hardware, adding an additional 1TB drive. I needed extra sata connections so I added a PCI sata card, blew out the dust bunnies, installed the HD and the damn thing wouldn't even post!
    It runs now.
    Wouldn't dare not !!

  • VS2013 edit-and-continue doesn't work for 32-bit (error 1006)

    Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2013, Version 12.0.30501.00 Update 2, is running under 64-bit Win7. App is 32-bit debug build, C++ (native).
    When at a breakpoint, if I change the source code and continue, I get a message
    Edit and Continue : error 1006 : A global or static variable was added, renamed, removed, or changed data type or initialization: ___ImageBase (referenced by: c:\MyProgram\debug\MySource.obj)
    This occurs no matter what the change. In the example above, I added 1 character to the end of a comment line.
    Both edit-and-continue and native edit and continue are enabled (screen shot below).

    Hi VoiceOfExperience,
    Maybe you could share us a simple sample, so we could test in the same Environment.
    After you enable the edit and continue, please restart your VS, test it again.
    In addition, you know that there are some limitations for VC++ with it.
    See:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/0dbey757.aspx , so we could make sure that it doesn't go against thses rules.
    Maybe you could test it in other VS machine, if we make sure that it really meets the requirements as the above link, but it still has this issue, maybe you could submit a report here:http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/CreateFeedback.aspx,
    you'd better share a simple sample in your report, so it would be helpful for the product team expert to repro/troubleshoot this issue.

  • Intel 5300 agn keeps disconnecting on brand new X301

    Hi,
    I just received a new X301 today with Windows 7 64 bit and I've been quite happy with it except that the wireless card keeps losing the signal and then reconnecting. I am not sure why and this does not occur with other laptops on this network. What should I do? Should I downgrade the driver? It looks like the driver I have is the latest. Should I contact lenovo because the card is defective? Thanks.

    Same here. I have a new W700 running Windows 7. My WAP at home is a WRT54G v3 running DD-WRT.
    Sometimes the link goes up and down all the time, sometimes it's stable. Messing with the power settings seems to fix it, sometimes.
    This is a pretty commonly reported problem and I think the 5300 driver has been patched to address it, but obviously it's not fixed yet. I'm current on all my patches so there's not much I can do other than wait for another one.

  • Photoshop CS5 32 bit misrecognizes a command received from another program...

    I use a free mouse gesture program called StrokeIt. It allows mouse gestures to be made for other programs. It uses mouse gestures and a few mouse click actions to activate custom commands.
    But there is a bug in which Photoshop CS5 32 bit won't receive a command properly from StrokeIt. A StrokeIt command sent to Photoshop CS5 32 bit with the wheel_down mouse gesture is misrecognized by Photoshop CS5 32 bit as the same command used by the wheel_up gesture. The developer of StrokeIt has done a lot of testing on this problem and has concluded that this is a recognition bug in Photoshop CS5 32 bit under 64 bit Windows [but no problem with 64 bit Photoshop]. Can this be fixed?
    BTW: I'm currently using: Win7 x64 | Photoshop CS5 32 bit | StrokeIt Home 0.9.7
    ALSO: To perform the wheel_down / wheel_up commands in StrokeIt, you hold down the right mouse button and scroll the wheel down/up. This will run whatever commands you have customized to that gesture.

    here is the detailed dicussion with the strokeit developer on this problem at the strokeit forums.  the developer's name is jeff and the discussion on this problem began on nov 15 on page 2...
    http://www.tcbmi.com/strokeit/forum/read.php?3,54070,page=2
    this problem affects *some* 32 bit programs on 64 bit windows, and photoshop cs5 32 bit happens on be one of them.

  • Upgrade windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit

    Just got my t400 with 4 gigs of ram, but forgot to order 64 bit windows, so I only have 2.46 gigs of "usable" ram.  I talked to lenovo, and they said I'd have to return my laptop (and pay a 15% restocking fee) in order to get 64 bit, which I do not want to do.
    I can get windows 7 ultimate 64 bit for free through work.  I am wondering if it is possible to format the hard drive, then install windows 7 64 bit.  I assume I would then have to download all of the 64 bit drivers off of lenovo's support page.  Is there anything that I need (drivers/applications) that I would not be able to get off of lenovo's website (for instance, something that is on the recovery partition)?
    Thanks.

    Yes, i did the same. I had a Win7 Ultimate Upgrade CD 64 bits. The laptop had Vista Business (32 bits) on it. You can not upgrade from 32->64 so you have to choose a new installation. No need to re-format yourself. The install will do that for you if necesarry. Even better, that way Microsoft can check if you are legimate to use an upgrade CD (or not). The install went very smoothly. In 15 minutes i was running 64 bits. Then i did the Windows Activation first. Because i wanted to make sure i am a legimate user according to Microsoft (of course i know i am but does microsoft?) before going through all the trouble of installation of applications etc...Also run WIndows Update to be sure.
    When i was activated (succeeded immediatelly) i downloaded and ran the Lenovo System Update program. That will download everything you need (and more) from the Lenovo site.You can also download the newest BIOS. I would do that as well and i think that doesn't come with the System Update.
    After that the most intensive work starts. Installation of all your favourite applications and setiings.
    Have a nice vacation! At least you have something on your hands now! ;-)

  • Norton internet security and IE 64 bit

    Hi guys                              HP Touchsmart 300-1125uk win 7 64 bit
    2 Questions for you !
    The first is, i have norton internet security 2012 installed, so why does it not cover touchsmart, version 4 no norton shows on the screen.
    2nd Question internet explorer 64 bit you cannot get any toolbars, well saying that i know of only 1 google.
    The problem being when you install google toolbar 64 bit, it takes over everything else, when you go back to IE 32 BIT.
    Its taken over that too and resets your homepage to google on 32 bit.
    1 More thing youtube for touchsmart, we don't have it.
    Any help would be most welcome
    Thank you
    wob

    You are correct about IE 64-bit having limitations, there is no solution, that's why Win7 also has a 32-bit Internet Explorer with it for compatibility. Personally? it's a lot safer to run IE-64 and not have any toolbars which IMNSHO are 99% crap.
    If Norton shows in the system tray of WIndows it's installed, it doesn't need to do anything special to also protect the Touchsmart applications, it's not another OS, just an application.
